"What Cornell Teaches Its Students About Sex/From feminist porn awards to guides on group sex, Cornell has promoted sexual liberation as a virtue."

An article by Jared Lederman, a senior at Cornell, in The Free Press.

Lots of links to the University's sex guides, such as "Yes, No, Maybe So: A Sexual Inventory Stocklist"."

Lederman opines: "Cornell’s philosophy on sex is so striking because it is much more measured when it comes to other facets of students’ lives. The school regularly instructs my classmates and me to limit our drinking, protect our sleep, and develop healthier habits. Cornell hasn’t adopted a libertarian philosophy on degenerate college behavior in general; it has simply chosen to champion sexual liberation...."

Hmm. I think he's underestimating how daunting that Sexual Inventory Stocklist is. It's a long series of lists and you're supposed to react to each one. Do you want this or not? Just to excerpt one section of one list:

___ Being completely naked with a partner with the lights on

___ Having a partner be completely naked with the lights on

___ Direct eye contact

___ Being looked at directly, overall, when I am naked

___ Grooming or toileting in front of a partner

___ Having a partner groom/use the toilet in front of me

___ Having my genitals looked at directly

___ Having a partner talk about my body

___ Talking about a partner's body

___ Having some or all of a disability, identity or difference I have be specifically made

part of sex, sexualized or objectified

___ Having some or all of a disability, identity or difference a partner has be specifically

made part of sex, sexualized or objectified

___ Having some or all kinds of sex during a menstrual period

___ Seeing or being exposed to other kinds of body fluids (like sweat or urine)

Is that sex positivity? I think not. I think that's asking you to soberly contemplate what might happen and to fix in your mind, in advance, where your boundaries are. There's no way this list is designed to make you think I need to throw myself out there and experience all this. It's more: This could happen and it's not going to happen to me (not without real love).

How does Cornell teach its students about sex? Not the way you’d expect. Read Cornell student Jared Lederman’s full essay in our app or at TheFP.com.

Why don't these universities, you know, just teach? Like so much of the crap these schools engage in, it is activist driven nonsense that has nothing to do with creating well educated young people.

I agree. Most students starting at the university are legally adults and it's not the univeristy's role to monitor or modify a student's behavior outside of the classroom. If a student is accused of a crime off campus, it's up to the Police and the Courts to determine if a crime has been commited and what the punishment should be.

ChrisC, what you are asking for is beyond the current curriculum and educating what have to be put in place of indoctrination.

(Cornell University)

• Cornell Health: The university's official health service has also distributed and provided educational materials, guides, and inventories that discuss or reference sex toys as part of broader sexual health and pleasure education. (The Free Press)

It's certainly not "positivity." It's both a permission structure (read on in the "list") and a roadmap to absolute misery.
If you're not doing these things you are left out. If you are doing these things you need to very very careful every step of the way to make sure nobody's touching anyone else's "boundaries."
And if you do cross a "boundary" then you are either liberated or you've been raped.

Cornell and progs generally want to have it both ways. Anything goes except it doesn't. Men and women are totally equal, but here are all the restraints men need to observe. Threesomes with strangers are fine, but if a woman has regrets, the men are at fault. It's almost as if sexual liberation and feminism in general left progs with a bad conscience, as they observe the harm they did.

JK Brown said...

Colleges, especially elite universities, long ago abandoned promoting an open dialogue and free expression except as marketing slogans.

Even so, the colleges found that marketing open underage drinking and illicit drug use and free unconventional sex, that is the "college experience" gets more paying students.

It's not new. Percy Marks exposed college debauchery in his 1924 novel, 'The Plastic Age', the film of which helped make Clara Bow the "IT" girl.

When students take these college orientation sex lessons to heart, they learn that the old moral condemnation is still out there among the social circles. After all, for college women, it's always been a popularity reputation contest on campus.

"n the 1930s, a sociologist gave the competitive system a name: the dating and rating complex. His study of a college campus revealed that the system was based on notions of popularity. To be popular, men needed outward, material signs: an automobile, the right clothing, and money. Women's popularity depended on building and maintaining a reputation for popularity. They had to be seen with many popular men in the right places, indignantly turn down requests for dates made at the "last minute," which could be weeks in advance, and cultivate the impression that they were greatly in demand "
--From Front Porch to Back Seat: A History of the Date, Beth Bailey, 2004, Magazine of History, Vol. 18, No. 4

But the competitors also engage in reputation destruction for a girl whose adventurism becomes too public

Big Mike said...

Back in the late 1980s one of our young admins complained that her father insisted on meeting the guys who picked her up for dates — and meeting them in his den, where his gun case was and his shooting trophies were displayed.

The group of people who pay attention to popularity, being in demand, student government, and school sports celebrity is so foreign to me. It's like that whole group is a different species and in high school and college for a whole different reason. I didn't know them, think about them, or desire anything about that world. I was in a completely separate universe that never intersected with them. I would occasionally date a girl from that universe, but it was always short-lived and strange, like meeting aliens.

“I did not know Cornell is a land grant university. I thought that was limited to the great schools like Wisconsin and Nebraska.”

Huh?

If a state has a vet school, they are usually the land grant school in the state. Cornell has a vet school. They are weird though since almost all of the other land grant schools are public. Cornell is private.

There is only one land grant school in each state. Except what look like Indian tribes, have them, on occasion. Growing up west of you, in CO, I assumed that the land grant school was the one with State in its name (Colorado State). Wrong. Nebraska can be your land grant school. In AZ, I had always assumed it was ASU. Nope. U of A. Here in NV, it appears to be UNR, which makes some sense, since UNLV didn’t exist back then. But they are kinda the same school, with two campuses.

Grew up around a bunch of Cornell grads, transplants to CO. Most were grads in Hotel and Restaurant management, but at least one was an engineer. One was the Arby’s king, with hundreds of franchises. Another ran food service for Martin Marietta. It was great - he would bring 50 gallon pots of freeze dried chili to our Boy Scout campus. He also designed the main restaurants at Winter Park and Copper Mountain ski areas. Got lifetime season passes for the family, and amazingly, 60 years later, the WP passes are still good.

Maybe a decade ago, daughter did her second physics REU at Cornell. She spent the summer playing with one of their particles accelerators. Great time, but wasn’t interested in staying back east. Or really in physics.

It's always been a thing where college seniors delude themselves into thinking that, because they went through the full education experience, they are now the experts and know everything that they need to know. (mostly because they're in a position of being at the top of the student body food chain.) What they don't realize is that they've only reached the end of college education. After you graduate is when you really start to learn about the realities of modern life. And as they say: The more you know, the more you know just much you don't know. And as they also say: "Every generation thinks that they invented sex." (College students doubly so.)

Big Mike said...

@William (among others upthread), then I think you SHOULD get acquainted with the details of the case.

Would it surprise you to learn that of the seven …

Three did not have any sort of penetrative sex with Jane Doe?

That of those three, two claim to not even have entered the room where the sex acts were taking place. But have no fesr, Letitia James will figure something out.

That the third merely kissed her?

A fourth received oral sex. As long as women have.these things called “teeth” I have a hard time accepting the concept of non-consensual fellatio.

Three of the seven did have coitus with Jane Doe. One of them — and only one — hit her hard enough to leave a bruise. As this individual has the same skin color as Letitia James, look for him to be offered a plea deal.

And do not forget that the police who interviewed Jane Doe at the time, based on her own testimony under oath, determined that the sex was consensual.

The intro for a lengthy and thorough article in The Daily Wire:

“A slew of text messages from the Cornell accuser have now been released, and they erase all doubt about what happened: This woman, according to her own contemporaneous statements, consented to deviant sexual activity in a frat house, and after the fact, she firmly believed that no crime had been committed. She even stated that “everyone needs to grow up ’cause sexuality and sex … is changing,” meaning that she saw her behavior as enlightened — as a feminist expression of her own freedom and empowerment. Then, not long afterwards, she began experiencing shame and humiliation when the entire campus found out about what she did. She stated her reputation was “destroyed” and accused a fraternity member of telling everyone what she had done.

The breaking point came when the fraternity disinvited her from their big Halloween party. This was the single most important social event of the semester, and they made it very clear they didn’t want her to attend. And suddenly, hearing this, she decided that she had been assaulted, retroactively withdrawing her consent long after the fact. That was the moment she decided that she would go scorched-earth: the second she was barred from a party at the very fraternity house where she was supposedly abused. Think about that for a second. She was bitterly disappointed that she couldn’t return to the place where she was supposedly subjected to a brutal gang rape. The very notion is farcical, of course. But she understood that, at a Left-wing, female-dominated campus like Cornell, she could immediately regain the moral high ground if she lied about what she had done, even if her story made absolutely no sense. And she was right.”

And there you have it. It was all fun until it became clear that (1) her behavior embarrassed her sorority, (2) the story of what she had done had the gotten out and so embarrassed the fraternity that she was specifically barred from attending the next event, and (3) her disk via toon brought home to her that that her own reputation on campus was destroyed.

Aggie said...

@Big Mike, maybe this is like a chef's kiss for the way that modern Feminism shapes young women, in the realm of building up the false confidence, the affirmations of Grrrl-Boss mystique, the beliefs that do not withstand the test of reality.

So now, she files suit, thinking this will somehow head off the social consequences. This is a very hard lesson indeed, an object lesson for the university environment. And I think it will shape up into a miserable experience for her, she'll wish she'd never done it is my guess. I hope she can move on from it.
