Holy shit…

SecWar Hegseth just confirmed the Fort Hood terrorist execution will be made public for The People to see.
Not just that, but he infers we are in times similar to WW2, and that this mindset of executing traitors is here to stay.
The noticing will continue. I am…
There are serious writings to be read. I will begin with the letter Charles Dickens published in the London Times on November 13, 1849:
I was a witness of the execution at Horsemonger Lane this morning. I went there with the intention of observing the crowd gathered to behold it, and I had excellent opportunities of doing so, at intervals all through the night, and continuously from day-break until after the spectacle was over... I believe that a sight so inconceivably awful as the wickedness and levity of the immense crowd collected at that execution this morning could be imagined by no man, and could be presented in no heathen land under the sun. The horrors of the gibbet and of the crime which brought the wretched murderers to it faded in my mind before the atrocious bearing, looks, and language of the assembled spectators. When I came upon the scene at midnight, the shrillness of the cries and howls that were raised from time to time, denoting that they came from a concourse of boys and girls already assembled in the best places, made my blood run cold. As the night went on, screeching, and laughing, and yelling in strong chorus of parodies on negro melodies, with substitutions of 'Mrs Manning' for 'Susannah', and the like, were added to these. When the day dawned, thieves, low prostitutes, ruffians, and vagabonds of every kind, flocked on to the ground, with every variety of offensive and foul behaviour. Fightings, faintings, whistlings, imitations of Punch, brutal jokes, tumultuous demonstrations of indecent delight when swooning women were dragged out of the crowd by the police, with their dresses disordered, gave a new zest to the general entertainment. When the sun rose brightly — as it did — it gilded thousands upon thousands of upturned faces, so inexpressibly odious in their brutal mirth or callousness, that a man had cause to feel ashamed of the shape he wore, and to shrink from himself, as fashioned in the image of the Devil. When the two miserable creatures who attracted all this ghastly sight about them were turned quivering into the air, there was no more emotion, no more pity, no more thought that two immortal souls had gone to judgement, no more restraint in any of the previous obscenities, than if the name of Christ had never been heard in this world, and there were no belief among men but that they perished like the beasts.
There are serious consequences for these types of things.

All executions should be public. Pay per view with the money going to the victims families.
It is interesting to see serious leaders making serious decisions with an understanding of future effects in DC for once.
It will be nice to see our politics swing away from the feminization we have endured since the 60s and back into balance.
…a long debated topic- if a society imposes the penalty as a deterrent shouldn’t it be more effective if you show the consequences? I’ve generally opposed the penalty because irreversible and humans make mistakes but since so many people are willing to pervert our justice system for political gain, letting criminals go free because Democrats need the votes just the latest…I don’t dwell too much on offing shitheads anymore…
He murdered fourteen of his colleagues and obama disregarded the casualties
I’ve mixed opinion on this. Good for deterrence in general but not clear to me that it would affect Islamists as a deterrence. I think they would claim martyrdom.
If one is pro death penalty, watching one should be part of the cost of that opinion just so you know really what you’re advocating for.
Dickens also wrote that “… the law is an ass.” If attention must be paid to everything he wrote then it follows that we should abolish law schools, law professors, lawyers, judges, and prisons. I note that Democrats are pushing hard for abolishing prisons so no wonder you’ve found a home on the left.
Hope their execution is better than Tennessee’s effort.

Sounds like an excerpt from the civil suit against the Cornell frat boys.
"I see it in Hegseth's body language...."
Oh really? Any other special invisible talents you care to brag about? Do you also have windows into a man's soul? Maybe you can just look into someone's eyes and read their thoughts.
Not busting your chops here, but that statement is bullshit. and I'm calling you on it. And CHARLES DICKENS??? And he only writes about the crowd, yes drunken street trash loved the London executions, so what? This is more of that Obama style judgmental disappointment. "Come on America, we are better than that." Without a word for the victims, without a word for the betrayal of the oath of enlistment. A commissioned officer mind you, in the military shooting his comrades in service.
Yes firing squad, Yes public, Yes tell the world that here is consequences of evil actions.
As part of the broadcast of the execution, they should first show the scene of the crime with the dead bodies and then a brief bio of each of the victims, just to show that sordid actions resulted in this sordid end.
I admit that I am squemish, and have no more desire to see the execution than I wanted to view the horrific videos of the Hamas atrocities of October 7. Sometimes we have to have our noses rubbed in the atrocities and their consequences. May God have mercy upon us.
I’m with Breezy. I don’t plan to watch, as I’ve seen the multiple replays of Brian Thompson being executed with the cheer of the left. I understand how these things go.
Planned Perphood. PP, but with cause, and without a privacy shield. Progress.
His body should be fed to pigs afterward.
In a more just universe Lindsay Clancy would be the first paraplegic to have their torso used as a lead-catching device, but hasan will serve as an acceptable substitute. Shoot straight men.
"I admit that I am squemish"
It's really not that bad watching someone get shot. In truth it's less graphic than almost anything hollywood's been faking over the last 70 years. If you doubt me just watch Police Activity on youtube.
I won’t say I’m pro-death penalty, but I’m fine with having one on the books and think it’s an appropriate sentence for a small number of select crimes.
I don’t like the proposal of doing it publicly at all. One thing that I believe separates us as a nation/culture for the better is that we still afford some level of dignity and humanity to the condemned, even we have the hardest time mustering any sort of sympathy for him/her. The state taking a life for any sort of reason should be treated as a serious matter. A public display is not conducive to that at all.
I'll bet a lot of those execution revelers read the Dickens letter published in the London Times and felt really bad about the whole thing as if they'd pulled a train at Cornell.
Beware of the Herostratus effect.
“In truth it's less graphic than almost anything hollywood's been faking over the last 70 years.”
Indeed, beheadings are much worse, especially when they hold up the severed head as some sort of trophy. Even when done as a joke, it is grotesque.
PP carried out in public will have a deterrent effect.
One of the requirements for an US military execution is verification of an open line of communication with the White House for 30 consecutive minutes prior to the event. This is to assure the President has the ability to halt the execution, if need be or desired. I think the thing to do with that open communication is to memorialize the life of the victims, so everyone is clear why this person is condemned to death. Make that the televised coverage.
Amen to the old country lawyer. I’ve seen lots of video recently of the IDF killing terrorist that killed Jews on 10/7. The video usually shows the terrorist parading a dead Israeli around then it goes to the terrorist being killed. Truly showing both eyes in an eye for an eye.
"One thing that I believe separates us as a nation/culture for the better is that we still afford some level of dignity and humanity to the condemned"
It did. Past tense. That high trust, high-minded society you're referencing no longer exists. It was executed by barbarians like hasan that chose to act upon the imported low-trust medieval cultural and religious attributes the same people that would like him to be spared have had a hand in allowing to immigrate here.
So now, we're going to shoot him and televise it the way people that come from places like him do because they're too stupid and backward to get moral lessons transfered through their sternum in any other fashion. We have been culturally enriched.
Ain't it grand?
Beforehand, grease him with some lard, and announce that he will be wrapped in pigskin and buried in a secret unmarked grave, and let it be known that other muslim terrorists within our military await the same fate.
Remember, we dumped bin Laden into the ocean to become fish food, and that was under Obama.
Not all muslims are terrorists, but nearly all terrorists for nearly 50 years have been muslims. I was fortunate to have had a superb history teacher for 4 years in high school [mid-'60s] always providing the 'big picture', such as "Islam is not a religion, but a philosophy of militant world conquest and domination, hiding under the skirts of pretending to be a religion. Muslims will never quit, because their 'religion' is absolute world domination." They had been hoofed out of Spain in 1492, and 80 years later they intended to take western Europe from the sea.... referring to the pivotal battle of Lepanto 455 years ago this week.
And the millions of Muslim men, now pouring into Europe without families, are *not* coming there to "assimilate".
Time to end "workplace violence" once and for all. This will be their destiny....although it should have happened YEARS ago.
Whistling!
I thought it was generally held that soldiers were allowed a firing squad while traitors were hanged like common criminals. I'm glad he'll be executed at least and doing so openly is a good instinct though "streaming/pay-per-view" diminishes the seriousness of the event.
"If one is pro death penalty, watching one should be part of the cost of that opinion just so you know really what you’re advocating for."
I agree, and also think the same for Pro abortion opinions.
Homicidals should be drawn and quartered; scalped, and the biohazardous carbon remains vacuumed following established ethical PP protocol but without a privacy shield in order to deter recidivism and mitigate progress.
If that's the idea we'd better look into Blowing From A Gun
It was the test of the times, it was the suhweeeeet revengiest of times.

“It did. Past tense. That high trust, high-minded society you're referencing no longer exists.”
I’d rather slow the transition away from that type of society than speed it up. I think this is one (of several) aspects worth preserving u til the very end.
When it comes to the actual event, I doubt it will be shown live. Maybe edited before/after stills, but that's it.
@Shackleton, You proceed from the false assumption that the end hasn't already happened. This country is still filled with millions of people who don't belong here. When every illegal gimmigrant is sent back to their shithole of origin, we can talk.
I missed old country lawyer's comments before I posted mine, but yeah, similar thought. Rather than showing the original crime though, I would use it as the timeline order as the victims are memorialized. Make it clear each of those lives were taken, and after each one, the murderer could have stopped but did not. That is why they are being put to death now. No mercy for those that gave none.
If found guilty - I'd like to see Charlie Kirk's murderer shot by the very gun he used to kill Charlie.
He killed a lot of people, wounded dozens and deserves to die. People have lost faith in the justice system exactly because of long delays and now we have botched executions to consider. This has the advantage of being certain of success. No one is being forced to watch. All lawful executions have a public segment as witnesses.

Abort a million babies, a murderer, too, without a privacy shield and liability indemnity, would have a chilling effect on social progress and planned or premeditated homicide, respectively. Forward!
And bury Hasan face down/ass up in an unmarked grave.
Seeing it even once has an extremely sobering effect. There are videos widely available now. What’s the difference?
7:15 Old Country Lawyer.
Agreed. Remind everyone of the heartless stone cold cruelty.
(It won't move the needle for the cruelty-loving left)
That would be righteous, Peachy @8:19am!
Capital punishment is neither a celebration of Capitol punishment nor the sterilized entertainment of abortive ideation as a human rite performed for social, clinical, criminal, political, and climate progress.
I don't know if I want public executions, even of murderous traitors. But I want leaders who want public executions of murderous traitors.
Yes, I would say that I am generally against making a public spectacle of a human's death, whether it be by firing squad or assassination. Now, it's funny that some would say it's disgraceful, what Hegseth is doing, when their support is full-throated celebrating the bloody death of Charlie Kirk, or Brian Thompson, the United Health CEO. Apparently, their deaths are happy events, because 'reasons'. Or for that matter, the various attempts on Trump. So condemnations would need to go into sufficient detail to disprove their political expediency and make it about morality instead of simple, squalid politcs.
For those saying it isn't 'justice', well by the same token, neither are the decades-long appeals of death sentences. These are simply gaming the legal system to deprive the actual victims of actual justice. Yes, people make mistakes, and in these cases it's unacceptable. If we need more safeguards, then imagine them and put'em in place. But in many cases, the verdict is not ambiguous, not in these days of scientific evidence gathering. But just drawing out the timeline by delay after delay tactics is just as dishonest, just as morally wrong and indefensible, as making a public spectacle of it. One thing you can say about Trump's second term is that he is constantly putting things up for public discussion. I think he watches the reactions very carefully. The last administration didn't give a sh*t what you thought about what it was doing, and it showed. If you had questions, you might just get a visit from the FBI - remember?
"If that's the idea we'd better look into Blowing From A Gun"
I'm familiar with the practice, but very messy. I reiterate my proposal to behead with detcord in a stainless steel armored, spall-lined room. The liner can serve as a kind of "trash bag" and the room pressure-washed with a light hydrochloric acid solution. Quick, painless, requiring nothing more than someone who's demo-certified, and could even be automated after setup.
But "Noooooo that's barbaric!" cry the people preferring methods that just failed like lethal injection. This country's become a joke, albeit with glimmers of hope like shooting this traitor.
"There are serious consequences for these types of things."
This is precisely the point of the public execution. To demonstrate that there are serious consequences for the murderous things the Muslim traitor did.
“…Still affords dignity…”
It was within lifetime of some here that Kansas publicly hung a criminal and many of us remember that guy who demanded a firing squad and got it in the seventies.
My reaction when I heard that the Fort Hood shooter's execution will be public and livestreamed could be summed up in the meme from "Survivor," which the guy with a huge grin standing between two women with their hands over their faces in horror. I'm putting it on my calendar for December 3rd. That oxygen thief has been living for far too long.
If nothing else it will remind people that it’s not just Republicans who are shot in public. Sometimes it’s someone who earned the bullet.
You don't have to watch, no one is compelled to observe, but planned perphood is an ethical choice for those who have committed a treasonous or premeditated Choice.
…but as we see with the reaction to Hamas committing atrocity on Saturday and their PR firm publicizing their list of demands on Tuesday, for the Tims of the world time begins when the good guys act…

Someone pointed out that swift (and successful) executions can have a deterrent effect. Does livestreaming add anything to that? Public executions in early modern Britain didn't really deter the pickpockets in the crowds of spectators.
As Ann Althouse's post and Breezy's comment suggest, you can support the death penalty for Hasan while still having questions about broadcasting his execution.
One reasonable argument for making executions public is transparency. The public has a legitimate interest in how the government exercises its power to take a life. But independent witnesses and responsible reporting can provide substantial transparency without a livestream.
The idea of deterrence feels weaker here. It’s tough to know if showing Hasan’s execution would actually stop others or if some extremists might use it to push a martyrdom story.
I think Ann makes a very worthwhile point by bringing Dickens’ quote into the discussion. The question isn't just what the condemned man deserves, but what turning his death into a public spectacle might do to those watching. There's an important distinction between making the administration of justice transparent and turning punishment into a spectacle. We can respect the victims and recognize the gravity of Hasan's crimes without losing sight of that difference.
Conflicts and homicidal vice are televised and published in progress and repeatedly. Why should PP be any different? Capital punishment is neither Capitol punishment nor a human rite performed with clinical sterility.
Hasan probably prefers a public spectacle be made of what he no doubt considers his glorious martyrdom.
He would probably be more horrified if he was simply taken out back and unceremoniously dispatched like a rabid dog by a guy with a pistol who kept looking at his watch.
Either/or
So long as he dies
Let it never be said
I can't compromise
Piercing the privacy shield would have a chilling effect on PP, which is an overriding concern for supporters of social progress.
It seems pretty clear that Ms. Althouse's position is one that a woman would traditionally take. Let's not have any of that shooting nastiness, please, it makes us retreat to our fainting couches. But do not forget, dear people, that the reason the soon-to-be-late Nidal Hassan is being executed is his profession of faith in the islamic devil-god and the imprecations to deadly violence his "prophet" repeatedly makes in his "holy book." No moslem, no murders. No murders, no public execution. It's a simple equation, really.
This is a very merciful sentence by radical Islamic standards.
When an execution becomes theater, the next step will be to engage a larger audience with more despised characters. Not a slope we want to slip down.
By any standard. See Shackleton? We're still more high-trust than he deserves! Pish tosh!
Pete doesn’t think we understand there are serious consequences for mass murder? He should try to come up with a better explanation
There's occasional glee emanating from Hegseth's countenance. He could easily have been one of the urchins Dickens described. I think it's fine, a public execution, live streamed to the people who, by proxy, have ordered the execution. Every execution should be done as such.
Civilization isn't a thin veneer, it a thick coating of stinking slime. Dickens observations and Hegseths body language, show the true face of civilized humanity.
It is easier for a civilized man to be a barbarian than a barbarian to be civilized. Things are the way they are now because barbarians like hasan aren't reminded of this fact as often as they used to be, Howard.
What a stupid bloodthirsty asshole Hegeseth is.. This is exactly what all terrorists WANT. To be the center of attention following an atrocity and then martyrdom. Shoot him, with only his executioners and witnesses present in some dank little prison basement somewhere. Give him nothing glamorous or noteworthy. It's truly amazing how the MAGA types get everything wrong.
Thanks for including the Dickens letter, Professor. I'd never seen that before. It's very thought provoking and perfect for this post.
I support the execution of this individual by firing squad, by soldiers, at Fort Hood. I think that's justice. Not so sure about live streaming it.
I won't watch it. Don't need that in my head for no purpose. For me it will be enough to know it was done. I can understand those who lost friend or family in Hasan's attack wanting to see him killed.
Howard said..."I think it's fine, a public execution, live streamed to the people who, by proxy, have ordered the execution. Every execution should be done as such."
There's definitely an argument to made for that.
What if, instead of public executions, they drew names like they do for a jury and it was a legal requirement for those selected, to witness an execution?
I raised the issue of martyrdom elsewhere and was told that it's not a matter of procedure. You can't deny a jihadi his martyrdom by feeding him non-halal food, or by somehow desecrating his body beforehand, because it's a matter of their beliefs, not yours. They're Islamists, radicalized, and that particular farce relies on absolute faith and suspension of disbelief in their righteousness. They can't afford to have doubts, not publicly at least.
Maybe the best thing to do is just not say anything, a total news blackout from point forward, let it stretch a few years and then do it quietly and eradicate the remains. Then nobody knows except a select few, which is more controllable. And if the radical Islamists make demands for information, simply direct them to Allah for further insights. Because Allah knows and you don't need to. It seems to me that this, refusing to inform, would do the most effective work.
I won't know what to think about this whole public execution thing until I hear from Kathy Griffin.
'...It's truly amazing how the MAGA types get everything wrong. ...'
What is even more amazing, is how the anti-MAGA types are so comfortable in their reactions that they don't realize they've just been tweaked, which was one of the objectives. Keep those reactions coming, please. People have short memories and need reminding of why they should vote.
What does Talerico think? Say, where is that fellow, anyway?
I dunno when the first item on your organization’s mission statement is kill all the Jews I’m not sure the group has fence sitters that will be only be persuaded to get with the program after the execution…
Dickens was upset that people were having fun at a murderers execution. But why shouldn't the death of a killer be a happy time? Justice is being done. And maybe future killers were deterred over the thought of their execution being a matter of sport and amusement for a crowd.
Of course, I dont see any reason to televise this Killers death in 2026 to the country. If he's being shot, then put it on Close circuit TV so Army/Air Force personnel can see it. Dont make a tape of it, so the public can see. This is for the military men, who can see that justice is being meted out.
In any case, isn't some leftwing Judge going to stop it? Because they rule, not Mr. Pete.
The Trump administration is trying to become Iran: if you can’t beat them, copy them.
More performative vice from the snuff film administration. Debased actions by a debased administration.

I haven’t researched this recently, but I doubt public executions deter people who are mentally ill. And it inspires and eggs on the fanatics who want to be seen as martyrs.
On the other hand, it normalizes violence among impressionable people who might never have considered violence as acceptable before seeing government and the president promote it.
IRC, if you're "Shot to death by musketry" they put a black hood on your face, tie you to a post, and then shoot you. There's no blood or gore. They slump down and die. Death comes very quick.
If you've seen someone shot on a youtube video, it wont be that different. I wouldn't watch. Not out of Christian virtue or squemishness. But because I know what it would look like.
Here's another candidate for a firing squad: https://nypost.com/2026/10/08/us-news/monster-accused-of-pushing-girlfriend-baby-off-nyc-balcony-flashes-demonic-grin-as-hes-hauled-away-by-cops/
Nidal Hassan shot a pregnant woman in the womb to make sure the baby died too. This makes him a hero to the pro-abortion crowd.
IEE seems more upset over a killer getting executed than he is over 21,000 Gazans kids being murdered. Or 168 school girls being killed in our sneak attack on Iran.
But then that's the liberal/left. They follow the party line. Cue: Fake outrage and fake Tears. Cause Trump.
There are videos of German spies being shot
… on YouTube.
Here again comes RCO with the proposition that hiding under your mother's skirt while trying to kill Israelis provides invulnerability to the killers. Hey RCO, what does "From the River to the Sea" mean to you?
With respect to the bitched execution in Tennessee, I was told about it by my wife. It is so horrible she said, to her credit she knew what she did and condemned it. But she then bemoaned that the poor killer had to wait 26 years? for the sentence to be carried out. I reminded her that the 26 years were all her own doing with legal maneuvers. A firing squad beats the hell out of the fake limousine liberal “kindness” of lethal injection.
The only surprise is that the execution isn’t happening on the White House lawn. Where’s the monetization? Trump could auction off the executioner’s job to the highest bidder—or perhaps a family member. Plenty of sponsorship opportunities.
America may be at a new moral low, but with this administration, apparently there’s still plenty of room to go before we hit bottom.
Just before being taken from his cell they should hint to Hassan that the rifles are loaded with hollow point bullets, and the hollows are filled with pig shit.
The party that celebrates "Kirkversary" and praises murdering people who work for insurance companies is very, very upset that we are executing a cold blooded Islamic murderer.
"So we are called to contemplate something that we have long believed to have been abandoned."
If people want to abandon it, the thing to do is amend the law to remove the option. Just pretending it doesn't exist is what progressives do regarding legal issues they disagree with.

All executions were public from 1776 (and before) until the 1830s when they were first put behind walls. Why? Because, like you, they offended the liberal sensitivities of the time, especially the rowdy behavior of the crowd enjoying the spectacle of a criminal receiving his (mostly his, sometimes her) just rewards.
I'm not particularly concerned with liberal sensitivities. Executions should be public spectacles. All of the,. By hanging or firing squad.
Saudi Arabia didn't stop public beheadings until 2019 or so. Why? Due to liberal sensitivities of the Western world. They still do them.
France did it's last public beheading in 1939. Why did they stop? According to google AI: 𝐁𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐮𝐬𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐜𝐡𝐚𝐨𝐭𝐢𝐜 𝐜𝐫𝐨𝐰𝐝𝐬 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐮𝐧𝐚𝐮𝐭𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐠 (𝐰𝐡𝐢𝐜𝐡 𝐰𝐚𝐬 𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐧 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐝 𝐛𝐲 𝐚 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠 𝐂𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐨𝐩𝐡𝐞𝐫 𝐋𝐞𝐞), 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐅𝐫𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐡 𝐠𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭 𝐛𝐚𝐧𝐧𝐞𝐝 𝐩𝐮𝐛𝐥𝐢𝐜 𝐞𝐱𝐞𝐜𝐮𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐥𝐲 𝐚𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐫
Again, liberal sensitivities.
Public punishments, carried out swiftly, not after 13, 15, or 50 years, are a visible deterrent to crime.
Delaware was the last state to ban the pillory and the stocks- with public records showing pics from as late as 1901. They're last whipping was in 1952. Just a note- there was a lower crime rate back when this was done. And when horse thieves (nowadays it would be car thieves) were hung by the neck until dead.

Clever to have the execution announced before but carried out after the election

If it saves just one life . . .
Another fence taken down without much discussion as to why it was put up to begin with.
Just read a vehement protest against televising Hasan's execution by a pro-Ukrainian poster on X. A poster who regularly posts videos of Ukrainian drones killing Russians, sometimes up close, sometimes encased in their armored tombs.
The level of hypocrisy by the opponents of the televised execution is really off the charts high. Already been pointed out the people who celebrated Charlie Kirk's assassination on live TV are 100% against Hasan's legal execution being broadcast live.
"bitched execution in Tennessee"
Pun intended?
I have mixed feelings about it. War is about killing, if Hasan had been shot in battle, it would be a footnote. That he posed as a member of the US army is what makes it a crime. Some 18 Germans who had posed as US soldiers in the Battle of the Bulge were executed by firing squad. Admittedly, Hasan was not an official member of another armed force, unless you count Islam itself as such. He can certainly be held guilty of ordinary murder. Reality is messy, and the laws of war are something of a Western fantasy. I could argue that it is good to be reminded of the realities of war, but I still have mixed feelings. We all get used to new realities, but should we in this case? I don't know, but it isn't like it is new in the history of the world.
Lem Vibe Bandit,
Chesterton was born right after the public hangings stopped. Why was that fence taken down? Has it improved England? Where people are now being arrested for Facebook posts?
As long as it's safe and rare, then [social] justice has been served, and the flukeing may progress with diversity (in multiplicity), Equity, and Inclusion. Piercing the privacy shield will have a chilling effect, but a burden is a "burden" is a burden. Capital punishment is neither Capitol punishment nor a human rite.
Will it be broadcast on the evening news, published in papers of record?
What’s a good food for an execution party? Swiss Cheese?

I'd say you cherry-picked the front end of my comment, without reading the whole thing. My sentiments are nothing like the thing you are calling 'liberal sensitivities of the time'.
I'm not an opponet of executions. But do we really need public ones? I don't really think so.
What we really need is judicial reform. Its absurd that after 26 years on death row we still have judges "staying the execution". But 'muricans love lawyers.

Putting sardonicism aside, my ambivalence to the spectacle of an execution is personal in nature. I, personally, have no problem as I personally have been desensitized to the violence humans commit against each other. I have personally seen the face of death along with the itty-bitty pieces of the face death collected by hand after being strewn over a wide area. I have personally witnessed an individual jump from a 5-story Green Zone building in Baghdad accompanied by the attendant screaming of women, and some men. I have watched live video feed of people higher told us were combatants being shredded by 30mm chaingun fire after being consulted by my direct superior - who gave the order - as to my recommendation for such action.
I do not want a society that makes a spectacle of execution even though I am desensitized to it. I do not want a society where other people become inured to the display of violence, even though that society is for all intents and purposes already here, whether they like it or not. I would even like a society that makes capital punishment available, legal, but exceedingly rare, although that has also been made impossible by the vagaries of a culture I am subjected to, but have no control over. What I would like is a world freed from its current Prisoner's Dilemma where millions of animals like hasan are unable to continuously push "defect" in what is not only my backyard, but within the embrace of an institution he should've never been considered for membership. These are things being forced upon us, that enemies within voted for, and which require people made of sterner stuff to solve with increasingly harsher methods made necessary by large cohorts of people no one voted for and in many cases don't belong her to begin with.
There's an ancient concept known as the "Sin-Eater", which was a person in certain European folk cultures that would eat the last meal of the deceased to alleviate their burden of any remaining sins. Some won't watch, others will, others can, but we are going to kill this man. People like me are fine with bearing witness if you won't and are happy to report back. You might disagree with it being public, but Howard Stern was right that "if you don't want to listen, don't tune in." Nothing about current year America should be normal, but you'd better start getting serious about this being the state we're sin.
When I lived in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia, years ago, an Arab invited me to the weekly (I presume they might have been weekly) beheadings in Chop Square in central downtown. That was the nickname locals used.
The son (or sons) of former Nubian slaves who had had the same job performed the deeds. Slavery was legal in Saudi Arabia until 1962 and probably still is if you have the misfortune of being an Asian maid to a wealthy Saudi family. Someone interviewed one of these executioners years ago, and he spoke about his job.
Swords, of course, were used. The beheadings and amputations-by-sword always took place after the Friday noon prayers, the Muslim equivalent of Sunday services. My understanding is that the prisoners were somewhat drugged beforehand. A van containing them would pull up. Out they would come and then they would kneel on a piece of cardboard.
Locals knew an execution (or executions) would happen on a certain Friday, because beforehand the police would block off the square so no one could park there. Then they would form a cordon to keep crowds at bay. I'm told that locals loved to push Westerners to the front so they could get a good view of the proceedings.
On one occasion the local English-language newspaper got shut down because it reported news of multiple executions one Friday. The Arabic press always reported such news, but the Saudi government did not want non-Arabic readers to know horrific crimes happened in the Kingdom. The story the paper reported was that three men had been executed because they kidnapped a boy, took him to the desert, raped him, and killed him.
Hand amputations were the penalty for the third conviction for theft. My understanding is that attending these events were much more emotionally grueling because after someone is beheaded they do not scream.
Oh, and p.s....I did not accept the invitation.
Ah...good 'ol "chop chop" plaza. Brings back memories.
Hegeseth wants to televise live a paralyzed man in wheelchair being shot by a firing squad? No remorse for Nidal here, but that will seem awful when/if the Army really does it, bc TACO, lawfare, Murphy's Law, and so forth. In the Kubrick film Paths of Glory ('57) a scene comes to mind where a French army firing squad shoots a private wounded in battle who is bound upright on a stretcher. Not a good look. The MAGAtards are just clueless stupes IMHO.
Trump should get Bezos to pay $50 million for the exclusive streaming rights on Amazon Prime. Broadcast it during Thursday Night Football. Halftime entertainment.
The twist? It’s the Melania sequel.
Imagine being so worried about getting beaten in the midterms that you decide the solution is to start televising executions.
In Paths of Glory the private on the stretcher hadn't personally done anything wrong and was part of an unjust group punishment.
He wasn't being executed for becoming a traitor, killing and wounding dozens of his unarmed, fellow French soldiers and declaring himself after the fact to be allied with the Germans.
A ridiculous comparison that is clearly the product of motivated reasoning.
I always suspected that Hegseth enjoyed watching snuff films.
@IEE: You've really got a bad case of TDS! That's all you think about. He's really living in your head.
I am a supporter of the death penalty. If you want to eliminate the death penalty as punishment, then start live-streaming executions.
This will give the Democrats cheering for Charlie’s and Brian Thompson’s murderers an opportunity to practice execution outrage. It’s awful when the government does it after due process and a conviction. /s
"I am a supporter of the death penalty. If you want to eliminate the death penalty as punishment, then start live-streaming executions."
That darn Trump. He just ruins everything.
Seems the left, as usual, has forgotten American history. For roughly the first 200 years of our existence , Americans have publicly executed people. public hangings for stealing, for rape and murder.
Then society became feminine. We decided to civilize the process. Soon people were on death row, for decades.
The next logical step was to stop arresting people, or arresting them and then immediately letting them go. and many of these criminals killed, raped and committed crimes again. and again.
The left helped to create this reality. They cheered when Charlie was publicly executed , cheered when that Insurance executive was shot in the back on film. cheered when DJT was shot.
So now people are fed up with this bullcrxap.
I'm not watching. But it will happen, and should happen. Enough is enough, and honest citizens have had it with giving criminal scum a pass.
'...Hegeseth wants to televise live a paralyzed man in wheelchair being shot by a firing squad? ...'
And why is it, he's in a wheelchair ? ? Is this like the Menendez brothers, wailing to the judge to go easy on them for killing their parents, on account of being orphans?
It's an obvious reaction to be outraged by this. But I think that you have to look much deeper into what's happening. If you're going to support your government putting people to death, you should be aware of all the nastiness that that entails. Making it so public, will cause a lot of people to think more seriously about their personal views regarding the death penalty. It's really easy to be in favor of unpleasant things when other people are assigned to do it and it's done out of sight. Also, televising this will have zero effect on if the prisoner is executed or not.
I'm not going to watch it, and if people don't want to watch it, they won't be forced to. (And they can choose not to watch it.) But life happens and death happens. And there are times when we accidentally do see death on television from time to time. (Remember how all those school kids were made to watch the Challenger launch or the guy who shot himself, on live TV, in front of the news helicopters a few years ago?)
So I think that people should ignore the political theater here and use this situation to re-examine their personal beliefs on the death penalty.
"a paralyzed man in wheelchair being shot by a firing squad"
Just like Lindsay Clancy, that's the best part. Sometimes it's hard getting them stay still.
The government should delegate PP following progressive protocol in liberal sanctuary states to umbrella corporations where a life can be aborted under a veil of privacy out-of-siight and out-of-mind with clinical sterility. The reason for the distress is empathy, sympathy, and phobia that entertaining abortive ideation may be conflated with homicide, treason, war, and capital punishment. #Baby Lives Matter
Ok, it’s AI but these are the victims

I'm pro DP, and if watching it is my duty, then I will, but we should also televise a video of the crime using AI to generate it if needed, and run that just before the execution. That would be fair, but of course we won't do that, because the crimes are so much more heinous than any modern execution, which is compassionate by any comparison. I can stomach watching the execution by simply imagining the crime this person did to some innocent person to get to this point. What I can't stomach is them living cost-free and work- free on my dime after it.
@Eva Marie: Thanks! As a Vietnam Vet I would be more than willing to be a participant in the firing squad.
"You might disagree with it being public, but Howard Stern was right that "if you don't want to listen, don't tune in.""
Unfortunately, the leftist position on everything is "If I don't like it and I don't want it, nobody can have it."
I hope his mosque can be billed for the bullets.
FWIW :
Hassan was kept on the job as psychiatrist even after his military superiors knew about his jihadi sympathies. Don't they be need to be called out next to him?
Someone has probably already said it, but the real question is what will this do to “our diversity”?
From InfantryDort on X:
"THE MARTYR’S VETO
Semi-related to this post but there is a point where prudence warps into fear.
“Don’t show it! They might get angry!”
That sentence should embarrass a serious civilization.
Don’t show the punishment! They might radicalize!
Don’t speak too plainly! They might riot!
Don’t enforce too visibly! They might make him a symbol!
Don’t we have better things to do?
Isn’t this beneath us?!
Nonsense.
Follow that road long enough and you’re no longer sovereign. You are negotiating with anticipated outrage.
We’ve been tip toeing around these barbarians for decades. Where has it got us? The west is nearly overrun in the name of “tolerance”.
Public justice isn’t bloodlust. Its memory made visible. Civilizations have always understood that law has to mean something beyond ink on paper. The beast in man does not study white papers. He studies consequences.
That’s why the spectacle matters. Because evil should NEVER be allowed to believe civilization has become ashamed of defending itself.
If extremists turn a lawful sentence into martyrdom, that’s their mythology, not ours. We don’t owe them control over our symbols, our courts, or our courage.
A fortress that lowers the gate every time the enemy howls has already taught the enemy how to command it."
“It's an obvious reaction to be outraged by this.“
I’m outraged by the crime. Whether I agree with the public execution or not, I’m not outraged by it.
"Anyone who becomes merciful upon the cruel one will end by being cruel to the merciful."
It took me until today, reading this thread, to understand the psychology and reason for the hanging festivities of the Old West. I get it. Justice should be celebrated. I expect though that this will be a net negative for CP support.
One major difference between Trump's first term and his second is that there are people around him who would advise him against these kind of actions. Just completely self-defeating in every respect. This entire administration lacks dignity, morality, and self-respect.
Even from the most narrowly, craven and self-serving perspective, you would think that someone in Trump's orbit would tell him "this is not going to help you politically". However, when someone is completely drowning in delusion, it is really hard to break through, and engage with reality as it is, not as we want it to be. Without that capacity, however, there is no possibility of transformation or course correction by the person. So that person finds him or herself, more and more at the mercy of events, just kind of floundering around, making the situation even worse for him or herself. Every attempt at exerting more control, results in a greater loss of control. These people still have a long ways to go before they hit bottom. Unfortunately, we are along for the ride for the time being, however, this kind of nihilism has a tendency to destroy itself.
For some people, taking away their freedom in return for never having to work or worry about healthcare or any other bills is not all that much of a punishment. Many convicts prefer prison life. It's a very weak punishment for committing the worst thing you can do to another person and the society that supports you,
As I mentioned in the open thread, show them shaving his beard. That's far more egregious in the eyes of Muslims than going out as a martyr.
"Don't they be need to be called out next to him?"
If that happened, they're accountable and they should be punished accordingly, which would be either relieving them of command due to "loss of confidence" or them doing the honorable thing and resigning, but not a sentence of death.
*So we are called to contemplate something that we have long believed to have been abandoned. There is some excitement — I see it in Hegseth's body language — over the return of the spectacle of imposing the death penalty.*
Did you notice Kathy Griffin's body language when she held up Trump's bloody head?
I think many people forget that the creation of jails is to protect the accused from the mob, until justice is arrived at. And then, the purpose of prison is to protect the citizenry from the felon.
I was out buying my winter seed and listening to NPR on the way home from the co-op, listening to the commencement of wailing on the subject. 'No Precedent !' they're screeching, and reminiscing about the last public execution, in 1930something. Of course it was in the South, and of course it was a Black Man, convicted of raping a White Woman.
Give them points for consistency, if not creative imagination. They don't seem to understand the impact of their reporting styles, or to comprehend that the way they report is guaranteed to turn many listeners to opposing positions, because of the way they're reporting an otherwise sympathetic issue.
Of course it should be streamed. Don't watch it if you're squeamish. We should hand out candy afterward.
BTW, go on youtube and see how many views certain (not very graphic) videos with real life deaths have. Go see on other websites and wonder how many people are watching soldiers in Ukraine on both sides getting killed.
Or wonder how many people get a thrill out of TV/Movies watching 'action' aka people getting killed. Isnt that the hidden thrill of "saving private ryan" and war movies? Getting guys get chopped to pieces and "buying the farm"?
Or you can watch creepy serial killer movies. Or movies glorifying terrorists. There was just one released and it won the AA.
But hey, lets look down our noses at all the nasty yokels back in 19th century going to a hanging. We're so much better than them. Right?
*It's truly amazing how the MAGA types get everything wrong.*
Really? Are we getting it wrong by executing the POS? Because - during the last 17 years - nobody on your side of the aisle was willing to do that.
In fact, your President Precious described Hasan's mass murder as workplace violence. So, tell me some more about how we get 'everything' wrong.
VP Vance answers question about the live streaming of the execution. Also compare how he answers questions to the way VP Harris answered questions:

“We should hand out candy afterward.”
Yes! And then we boogaloo down Broadway!
“That's far more egregious in the eyes of Muslims than going out as a martyr.”
If you insist on this barbering/good grooming focus, why not shave the fucks back, as well. And then shoot him ‘til he resembles Swiss cheese.
https://www.shootingnewsweekly.com/crime-and-punishment/schlichter-this-is-how-the-execution-of-nidal-hasan-should-be-carried-out/
AR 633-15 via Schlichter via Iman: "Eight rifles were loaded, at least one and no more than three with blank ammunition, then placed at random in a rack so that no member of the party would know whether his own rifle was blank."
Couple things wrong with that: a soldier even halfway through boot camp will have fired both live and blank rounds and will know the many differences in bang, recoil, etc. So the deception only works until he squeezes the trigger. Maybe that's all anyone was after - reducing hesitation?
Also, the random loading and rack placement seem to imply the soldier will grab a random rifle. It won't be zeroed to him. I guess the rifles could be put on mechanical zero (sights in the middle of their adjustment range) and test-fired by other soldiers to make sure they hit somewhere on the paper. But even if you're shooting at close range, the difference from the soldier's personal zero could be enough to miss the heart, or even brain if you're going for that (see e.g. Henry V who as Prince of Wales survived an arrow in the face).
It would be easy and cheap to put one rifle in a vise, zero it to a target where Hasan's heart is going to be, and operate it with some sort of trigger-pulling device that minimizes lateral force on the rifle - even just a piece of fishing line. You'd still need to select one operator, but he wouldn't have to be a trained shooter. You could keep bringing in people to pull the cord until someone agrees to do it. CC, JSM
Well, Mr. Mosby, my initial thought about this exercise was to select two less than average marksmen and have them take potshots at will… no hurry, keep the shots non-fatal as much as possible and let the SOB bleed out. But first… have his beard shaved off and hit his back while they’re at it. (h/t Jim at).
Don’t want Satan to have to look at the killer’s hairy back when he’s porking him throughout eternity.
*If you insist on this barbering/good grooming focus, why not shave the fucks back, as well. And then shoot him ‘til he resembles Swiss cheese.*
Don't misunderstand me. I wanted the guy offed 17 years ago.
I'm just not convinced publicly propping him up as a hero to his fellow terrorists is our best move. Shame the asshole in public, and then take him out back and shoot him.
The vile Candy Tuq'r left celebrate "Kirkversary" and then blame the Joooos and Israel.
There is zero evidence Tyler Robinson had any connection to Israel. Strange how the left celebrates his murder - but then blame Israel. So you leftists are pro-Israel?
Yes, when we killed bin Laden, I thought we should have captured him, brought him back to DC, given him a sex change on camera, dressed him up in fishnets and a red wig, and brought him to the WH Press Room. Where Obama would then take a handful of Viagra and roger him/her senseless right over the lectern, shouting 'OBAMA AKBAR!' and making UBL respond to the name Kimberley. Maybe throw in a 'THIS IS OBAMACARE, MUTHAFUCKA!'
I would have made BHO President-for-Life had he done that. CC, JSM
