But here we have a Death Triad of Disgrace, so disrespect is already in the cards:
1. Dennis Hastert, whose death was noted in this post yesterday morning. He rose to Speaker of the House and was ruined by his admission that, when he was a high school wrestling coach, he had sexually abused a young boy.
2. "Jim Bakker, Television Preacher Felled by Sex and Financial Scandals, Dies at 86" (NYT): "In the 1970s and ’80s, Mr. Bakker and his first wife, Tammy Faye Bakker, rode to fame and riches preaching the gospel of prosperity, the notion that those who embraced genuine Christian faith would reap material rewards....The Bakkers’ world came tumbling down in 1987 with a revelation that in 1980, when he was 40, he had sex with a 21-year-old secretary in his Assemblies of God ministry. The woman, Jessica Hahn, claimed she had been raped...."3. "Jeffrey Archer, Novelist Whose Real Life Rivaled His Thrillers, Dies at 86/In a life of achievement and disgrace, he wrote best-selling novels with themes he knew intimately: ambition, self-promotion, misbehavior and scandal" (NYT): "A political Houdini, he survived many vicissitudes, including a perjury conviction in 2001, when he was found guilty of creating false diaries and concocting a story to win a trial over whether he had slept with a prostitute to whom he paid hush money."

The GOPe was a lot like the teachers union. A lot of worthless people that attached themselves to a career pretending to be something else.
“ During the 2024 presidential election campaign in the United States, for instance, [Archer] told The Daily Telegraph he believed Donald Trump would win because “three-quarters of Americans are not intelligent.”
Then how did Obama win? Who put a man on the moon? Who wrote “Frankenstein, Part II?”
Prison didnt impart any wisdom
vicissitudes: A "death triad" pop-in.
It is OK because the NYT tells us those kids didn't have consciousness.
Also curious how he survived in prison.
He wrote a diary about it
Hastert was disgraced in life.
Once disgraced always disgraced?
Even if he showed signs of genuine repentance?
For the record, I don't know if Hastert did repent.
I'm just pondering the idea 'repentance' has a place for the living about the repentant dead.
There is a video claiming to be the last use of the French guillotine. A priest comes and does what they do. Did they do that regardless a repentance?
I have more questions than answers, obviously.
Archer sounds much more interesting and at least he produced something. He may have screwed up his own affairs at times, but he wasn't pursuing power over other people's lives and trying to take their money.
The warwick series was good
The first two are hypocrites and contemptible. Archer just sounds like a wild man. Granted, I don't know much about him
Let’s switch to calling it a Death Dyad, instead of a Death Triad, as usually the third is forced to fit the pattern.
But, was the hush money actually an illegal campaign contribution?
Jeffery Archer was a loyal Thatcherite and a popular speaker with grassroots Conservatives. If you thought his conviction and sentencing were politically motivated, you’d be right.
Archer wrote thrillers/capers/family sagas. Very enjoyable. RIP
Ahh...we don't make disgraceful people like we used to.
Hastert was "upended," Bakker was "felled," Archer experienced "disgrace." Only Archer has "disgrace" in this obituary headline.
“vicissitudes” The word I won the 8th grade spelling bee with. I’m sure the spellers today have much harder words than that but I am old so there wasn’t as much studying words as there is today!
Three characters brought down by sex-capades. I never got the appeal of Jim and Tammy. Talk about smarmy.
Others have been toppled by life's vicissitudes, suffered disgrace, and then gone on to redeem themselves in some constructive way. What did these guys do? Not much, apparently. Baker was probably the biggest breach of trust, but Hahn was only a small part of that. So I guess it's R.I.P and Good Riddance.
Hahn’s sex with consensual, but as a married Christian preacher Bakker’s extramarital sex with her was contemptible.
“Hahn’s sex was consensual”
Not in Texas. Faith is a weapon.

Queen Camilla said: "“I hope it may be some consolation for [Jeffrey Archer's family] to know what pleasure Jeffrey brought to me and to so many millions of readers through the pages of his works.... While he was not without flaw, his friends will recall him as an irrepressible life force through all the many differing chapters of his life. Wherever the next page turns to, I trust there will be champagne and shepherd’s pie in abundance."

Beware of reification and nominalization. People have been commenting on the "they always die in threes" thing forever. It may be superstitious and silly, but there's no reason to turn that into "death triads" and condemn it from some presumed high moral perch.
Jeffrey Archer reminds me of the SNL sketch about writers who start out in prison -- actually not a bad place for writers to start out. It's better than ending up there.

Prof: "Hastert was "upended,""
Technically, he wasn't the one up-ended....CC, JSM
Good on HM Camilla, sticking up for Lord Archer. He was a true Chap. I do confuse him with Lord Black sometimes: similar lovable rogue. Archer Chai! - JSM
