"We have to understand... that these violent hierarchies, these systems, white supremacy, heteropatriarchy, economic exploitation, have colonized our own minds."

"... especially for the white educators..."

I'd like to see him asked why he used this jargon and if he was sincere at the time and would he stand by it now. Perhaps he can restate language like "violent hierarchies" and "colonized minds" in a way that mainstream Texan voters can relate to. Ask him!

I asked Grok to write Talarico's answer to my question and got this: "I taught in a poor school where the kids were mostly not white. A lot of us who grew up middle-class, including me, walked in with assumptions that didn’t match what those students were dealing with—family stress, neighborhood crime, schools funded by local property taxes that leave the poorest districts behind. If you’re going to help those kids, you have to notice your own blind spots instead of pretending the system is already fair. That’s all I was trying to say.”

He used the jargon to impress, he was as sincere as ever, and he would stand by it now as much as ever. That's the presumption, anyway.

Virtually everyone on the planet deals with unfairness. Part of maturing is understanding how to navigate this as a part of life. If you’re a teacher, you don’t exacerbate the problem by making your students feel like there’s no hope because of some imagined responsible boogeyman. That’s cruel. Hope is demonstrated every day by people’s success in various endeavors despite the hurdles.

I know what it means, but that's the first time I have seen the word "heteropatriarchy". I think it's the lack of a heteropatriarchy, ie an intact family headed by a father, that is causing so many problems. Boys who grow up in fatherless families have a lot of problems. If you grow up in an intact family you've got a leg up on life despite your economic circumstances.......I suppose if middle class families grow up with as much familial dysfunction as their poorer neighbors, then we can achieve a certain kind of equality. So just keep preaching against the heteropatriarchy and undermine it whenever possible.

Gilbar: Why do you think Talarico is gay? I haven't really paid attention either way, but my impression is that he's been in a longish relationship with a woman who was formally a staffer.

I think people can assess a candidate quite apart from sexuality and I don't find that datapoint determinative, for me. But it does seem odd if there's a mischaracterization, especially if it's for the purpose of trying to make some sort of larger point.

Am I wrong? Why do people think he's gay?

James Talarico: former middle-school teacher, master’s degree in theological studies, openly grounded in his Christian faith without using it as a political weapon. He talks about loving your neighbor, helping the sick and poor, and protecting individual rights and liberties.

Ken Paxton: indicted on securities-fraud charges; impeached by the Republican-controlled Texas House over allegations including bribery and abuse of office, though acquitted by the Republican-controlled Senate; and at the center of a controversial plea deal involving Adam Hoffman, a man accused of sexually abusing a child. Hoffman ultimately pleaded guilty to lesser misdemeanors, served just 29 days, and did not have to register as a sex offender in Texas. After moving to Nebraska, however, authorities determined that his Texas conviction required him to register there as a sex offender.

And yet there are Republican voters who sincerely believe Paxton is the lesser of two evils.

That tells you something, not necessarily about the candidates, but about the voters making the comparison.

While Talarico keeps his private affairs largely out of the spotlight, speculation persists due to his outspoken support for LGBTQ rights and his unmarried status at age 36.

4 years ago, he started a Public relationship with Brianna Menard, who previously served as his chief of staff.

i SUPPOSE, that it IS possible, that when he started his campaign, he SUDDENLY DECIDED to fall in love with a woman.
..or,
when he started his campaign, he SUDDENLY DECIDED that he Should APPEAR with a beard (a woman that pretends to be a girlfriend).

i DON'T know him, and have never been alone in a bathroom with him; so i have NO IDEA what he does in private..
i DO KNOW that he is SUPER SUPPORTIVE of LGBTQI2SA+

Anyone that would have gone into the environment Grok thinks Talarico went into (the way he went in and the assumptions made), apparently, so naively is not qualified to lead.

Saint Croix said...

Why do people think he's gay?

He called God non-binary.

Then he tried to pretend like he wasn't making trans commentary

And he said, "You can't use human categories to define God."

Which of course is a direct contradiction of Christianity. Jesus Christ used human categories all the time. "Our Father, who art in heaven..."

Christ came to Earth to humanize God, and to let us know that we are loved.

I really don't give a damn about his sexuality. But his lies are something else. And his attempt to use the Bible to justify aborting our children is an abomination.

If misinterpreting the Bible to justify abortion and socialized medicine is not using your faith to justify your politics I don’t know what is.

Talarico might study Christianity but he is not Christian. He has stated: “Whether it’s God or Yahweh or Allah or Nirvana, the Great Spirit, whatever you call it, this is all… different pathways to the same kind of fundamental truth of reality.”

This is blasphemy. A core tenet of Christianity is that the only path to the Truth is through Jesus Christ.

I'm reading California's Report on Reparations. It's 1000 pages and I'm about 70 in. But I notice this already. All the crimes are being attributed to "white people" who set up a racial hierarchy with themselves at the top, Africans at the bottom, and everyone else in between. Then, for centuries, they enslaved others to do all the work and, mostly, they enslaved Africans for racial reasons. But, in fact, the most extensive slave holding, both in terms of time and space, was done by Hispanics, both Spanish and Portugese, on territory that never becane part of the US.. Yet the report often includes these events as when it speaks of "North and South America." And it includes other events that happened on land that eventually became part of the US but which was at the time controlled by the Spanish Empire. "White people" are supposed to have enslaved Africans in Florida in 1545. No, Hispanics enslaved Africans in 1545. "White people" enslaved Africans in Texas, the Southwest and California before 1847. No, once again it was Hispanics, who were Spanish subjects, who enslaved Africans.
The assertion that "white people," who believed in the alleged.racial hierarchy, which puts them above Hispanics, were committing crimes in the Spanish Empire for the last 400 years doesn't hold. And that's the kind of history we are to accept.

Talerico has a Master's degree in Fakeology, with a BS in Phoneyonics. He loves the camera and has left a trail of words that he won't be able to wiggle out of. He's there, on camera, saying what he believes in, long after these ideas have been accepted as toxic.

Paxton is a man with a trail of accusations, the kind of accusations that you see when someone is good at what he does, so good that you can see the opposition furiously putting them together, one after the other. Is a divorce filing for accused philandery worse than someone that ardently supports child sex surgery? But: he's separated right now, not divorced. Is an engineered impeachment by Democrats masquerading as RINOs a real thing? It didn't result in his removal. Think: Trump impeachment. Not defending Paxton, just noting what I've observed over the years. He fights Democrats on their home field, the cesspit, and they really, really don't like it when that happens.

Paraphrasing Charlie Munger, Talerico is rat poison, squared.

Without reading other comments yet - I really dislike the "inequality" framework, the relativity thing. Is there "wealth inequality" in the US? Yes - but what does poverty look like here? It looks like no shortage of calories, no shortage of shelter (homelessness is not a phenomenon of *poverty* but if drug use and/or mental illness), no shortage even of access to the high-tech luxuries of our society. How important is it that a poor woman can't afford a Birken or even a Coach bag, as long as she has some kind of bag in which to keep her wallet?

Similarly - do schools in affluent districts have more money than those in poor districts? Yes - but are the poor districts dealing with one textbook per classroom or fifty-year-old textbooks the way they used to? They are not. So what good does it do the *students* for their teachers to dwell on what resources they don't have, when they *do* have the necessities? Teach with what you've got. Don't neglect teaching simply because your classrooms don't have smart boards.

And telling (white) teachers that they must constantly be aware of their privilege is just a way of hobbling them with guilt as teachers.

All so some teacher won't feel bad for teaching proper skills. I'm so happy my kids aren't in the public school system.
