When the problem and the solution to the problem overlap this much, you have to be willfully blind not to see.

I'm reading "Travelers Are Reckoning With the Ultimate Disrupter: Climate Change/Once dismissed as occasional inconveniences, climate-related disruptions are now an inescapable fixture of summer travel. How will travelers respond?" (NYT):

The main "climate-related disruption" in question is that it's terribly HOT in the summer. The travel experience is BAD and, conveniently, the traveling is a cause of the heat. It's a big carbon footprint. So the thing that's not good anymore is exactly the thing you shouldn't do.
Lara Thornton, a nutritionist based in Toronto, spent years buying carbon credits to offset her carbon footprint, but she stopped after they came under scrutiny for being largely ineffective. “I know traveling is part of the problem, but I don’t know the solution,” she said. “With the world burning every summer, it really feels like we are too late and the damage is already done.”

Oh, Lara, listen to yourself. You know the solution! You're playing dumb.

Elisabeth Beckenbauer, 55, a social worker from Portsmouth, England, decided to stop flying four years ago after looking at a flight-tracking app that showed tens of thousands of planes in the sky worldwide. “Flying is one of the worst things you can do to the planet,” she said, “and I realized that I don’t need to do it anymore.”...

Okay. Points to the social worker. Congratulations on saying the plain truth openly.

While at least two-thirds of travelers express an interest in lowering their carbon footprint, environmental impact is consistently ranked as having the least influence on destination choices....

Well, surely the problem of excessive heat will rank more highly and force people to do what mere moralizing about climate change couldn't do.

[C]onsumer behavior can be stubborn. “The reality is that people will put up with some of the climate impacts to make the once-in-a-lifetime trip to Italy or Paris,” said Leigh Barnes, president of the Americas for Intrepid Travel....

They'll put up with some of the climate impacts. It just needs to get bad enough and at some point travel will be something that people will finally give up on. I see that this past summer, some of those European river cruises turned into bus rides when some rivers dried up in July.

Before we are all dead and gone, the world will turn again into a cooler cycle. Remember this post when you see it in about 10-15 years.

These days every bad day is a catastrophic event.
I am sure the current Worst El Niño Ever will soon become the fault of me driving my non-electric car in the hot South Florida heat with my A/C cranked on. Sorry, but it's what we do in the heat. Our offset are the people in Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Michigan moving into cooler autumn temps. And when you guys are cranking up your heat in the winter, we'll be your offset by turning off our A/C and opening up our windows.

And so it goes.

**Remember, you were told by the NYT travel section to drop everything and rush to fly to Glacier National Park so you could see the glacier before it melted away! No sense of irony.**

Ha ha. That was always bullshit. The “glaciers” in Glacier Park (in Montana) for all practical purposes have been gone for nearly 10,000 years. (And I've hiked to some of the remnants that still exist.)

Observing geologists put it well (as of 4 decades ago!): the remaining so-called glaciers of Glacier Park are today (not to speak of back in 1986) “hardly more than oversized snow patches.”

Specifically, University of Montana geologists David Alt and Donald W. Hyndman write thus in the first edition of their (terrific!) _Roadside Geology of Montana_ (1986): {quoting…}

It should have been called “Glaciated Park.” The mighty glaciers of the ice age are gone, and those that now exist in Glacier Park are puny and shrinking, hardly more than oversized snow patches. This is a poor place to see glaciers in action. But every part of the park bears the marks of enormous ice age glaciers that filled the valleys with groaning and creaking rivers of ice thousands of feet thick.

During peak ice age glaciation, the cover of ice on Glacier Park almost became a continuous ice cap. To visualize the park as it then was, imagine a vast sea of ice with isolated peaks jutting above it as islands of exposed bedrock.

{/unQuote}

(David Alt and Donald W. Hyndman, _Roadside Geology of Montana_, Mountain Press Publishing Co., Missoula, Montana, 1986; p. 60)

Thus it would be no surprise if those “glaciers” continue to melt away. Indeed, what (mountain) glaciers exist, there and elsewhere in the western U.S., largely date from the Little Ice Age of about a half millennium ago, and from which we're still emerging—not from remote antiquity.

What really makes the climate's eyes water is when those bad people drive pickup trucks...yuck!...except for those trips when the truck is hauling lumber and tools to build a grand second home for a good person to fly to when they want to ski or play on the lake in their massive wake setter. The climate also forgives them for the Cadillac Escalades and Bronco Raptors in their vacation home's 5 car garage because it understands good people need those and because of the concern they express to one another.

Why do you think carbon dioxide is an issue?

What would the problem be with 1000 ppm CO2 in the atmosphere?

You know CO2 has been above 2000 ppm for more time than it has been below 2000 ppm right?

Plants grow better up to 1500ppm. Why wouldn't we want more plants?

Peachy+2 said...

I'm so tired of the word "Carbon"
It's CO2. not "carbon"

Carbon dioxide (CO₂) is a colorless, odorless gas made of one carbon atom double-bonded to two oxygen atoms in a linear molecule (O=C=O).
It is a trace component of Earth’s atmosphere, a central part of the carbon cycle, essential for life.

John henry said...

"Carbon"? Really Ann? You know better than this. Why do you spread the fake propaganda?

Carbon is a solid, any carbon that gets into the air settles out by gravity in 10-20 days. The percentage of carbon in the atmosphere is about 0.00000004% give ot take a few zeros.

Perhaps you mean Carbon Dioxide? That is a gas, naturally occurrring in the atmosphere at about 0.3-0.5% historically.

Some people think it is a problem. A lot of people think the problem is bullshit.

If you are going to talk about it you should at least call it by its right name. I am pretty sure you know the difference between carbon and carbon dioxide.

And what evidence would that be, a****le? That it gets hot in summer?

Why do we build mathematical models? Let’s start there. We build them to make predictions about the real world. Will it rain tomorrow? Or in my case, how many simultaneous users can this system response noticeably degrades? How much SST buffer storage improve this? SST is expensive — one can buy way more than you think you need, but that is apt to be career-limiting.

When a model — a climate model — makes predictions, and the predictions do not come to pass, then the model is broken, and must be done over. Instead, I read that NOAA records “adjusted” temperature data, I consider that evidence that instead of adjusting the model to match reality, NOAA is trying to “adjust” reality to match the model.

This depends on your timeline.

It has only been that low for a few hundred thousand years. For most of earth's history it has been much higher.

We are actually healing the earth and bringing it back to balance by freeing the carbon that was trapped under ground. Plants stop being able to respire somewhere under 300ppm.

If the global warming cultists had their way all plant life on the planet would die.

There is absolutely zero evidence that higher CO2 levels raise temperature.

If you want to have some fun go watch geologists laugh at the modern "study" of meteorology.

Climate change is a cult and the "scientists" that push it are more like religious leaders than scientists. They had to completely destroy teaching of the scientific method in schools to make climate change a thing. Only charlatans use the word "consensus." Only zealots treat dissent like heresy.

I want to watch you present and defend any hypothesis that claims changing CO2 from 350ppm to 500 ppm has ANY measurable effect on global temperature.

Please try.

Top pic is smoke from Canadian wildfires. Which are not caused by "climate change." The "global warming" zealots claim they are because global warming creates "hotter, drier conditions." Which is the opposite of what is predicted, but they cover themselves by saying that the predicted changes are "regional" and that drier places will get drier and wetter places wetter. Another "heads I win, tails you lose" argument.
I wonder why those out-of-control wildfires stop at the Canadian border? Apparently the US of A is not one of the regions which gets drier, bit Canada is.
