In context, Trump was recounting the type of humor he shared with Graham.

Trump called Graham the greatest. I heard the clip.
Stewart is an ass.

Jon Stewart taught a generation that snark is an argument; that you can refute someone by mocking them while making a face. The world would be a better place if he had never been born.

Dave Begley said...

Jon Stewart is, IMO, the most tiresome, annoying and unfunny lib comedian around.

Yah the settles it - I’m switching to the communists 🙄

I saw Stewart's face there, and thought precisely the same thing.

Stewart has schtick. Trump has a schtick. Nice…

Stewart(D) and Kathy Griffin(D) belong in the same hack-basket of deplorables.

…yah, if his court jester bit is still intended to influence, look at the evidence. I get why Stewart is still popular with people that ohpleaseohpleaseohplease hope he’s influential…

I agree with Begley, the guy is just not funny. Listening to the audience laugh revealed to me the audience doesn’t laugh at his jokes. They laugh at his facial expressions. Where does his audience come from? Mystifies me.

God, I loathe that screaming.

That was cheap. Have you ever heard a comedian eulogize another comedian? Or a politician eulogize another politician? Or any good eulogy of anybody? You make them human by relating foibles and disagreements, and then tell everyone how the person was really, deep down, a great friend.

…point of order- there was this thing called obamacare what somehow passed that caused everyone’s health insurance to get fucked up…central planning always fails. So does revisionist history when it’s so easy to obtain receipts…

…if you’ve ever been in a studio audience there’s always a person or an act that comes in to warm up the crowd. Usually they instruct everyone to laugh like crazy even if the jokes aren’t funny. Sometimes they edit the laugh track, substituting a laugh garnered from somewhere else…

"At some point were Americans asked, would you like to turn the most prosperous, most secure, freest society humanity has ever known into an oppressive third world shithole?

I mean, technically, every two to four years, that's exactly what Americans are being asked. Just not in so many words."

Wealthy untouchable Stewart(D) is all in - as long as he isn't bothered by it.

oil jumped ~9% yesterday- since yesterday evening, stations buying gasoline have been paying much more- but there's a lag- stations will have waited 12-24 hours before they *start* to move higher, even then, they're already behind. Look for ~$3.90/gal maybe today, then $4 soon.

Jon Stewart is so even handed, attacking Trump and Fox News. And mitch mcconnell. Not that I like those last two.

It'll be interesting to see what kind of funeral Goober will get. Trump says it will be "Special" but i doubt he will lie in state at the Capital. Graham wasnt in the Senate leadership, his only run for the Presidency got 1 percent, and though well-liked he wasnt responsible for a lot of legislation.

In fact, while people like me knew him (and dislike him) I wonder how many average voters outside SC or DC even knew who he was.

If you listen to Trump's remarks in their entirety its not as bad as Stewart makes it out to be. Trump was the last person to talk to Graham before he died. Miss Lindsey tried to golf/talk to Trump as much as possible since he was trying to influence him on foreign policy.

From what Ive read, Graham usually supported Trump on domestic issues and he would give him the inside scoop on what was going on in the Senate. He was a big supporter of the SAVE act, not because Graham cared about it, but because Trump wanted it.

Places like South Carolina are so weird. Graham made it clear it didn't really give a damn about South Carolina. Campaign years excepted, he went back as little as possible, and went overseas more often than to home state. Ten trips to Ukraine since 2022. And 2-3 to Israel every year.

And South Carloinians didn't care. They never do. I suppose as long as Miss Lindsey voted $$ for South Carolina and was vaguely conservative he was their guy.

Stewart lost libbie credibility when he pooh poohed the wet market Covid theory. He needs to get some back so that he is invited to the right parties.

I learn from Twitter that even those who disliked Graham admitted that his constituent service was amazingly good. So much for "it [now Graham's an 'it'?!] didn't really give a damn about South Carolina".

As for "Miss Lindsey": anyone who calls him that when he just died is an absolute stinking asshole - and a fool not to know that he should keep it to himself.

Re. "good eulogies", I don't know what defines "good" but I get calls to "say something" at memorial services of people I knew and barely knew, at all.

The Rule: It's not about the dead guy. It's about the audience.

Some genuine grief. Also respect, humility, familiarity, friendship, forgiveness and, of couse the need to be seen there (but, hopefully, not for too long).

Acknowledge the deceased and the specific importance of the main grievers to him/her.

Say something to everyone ON BEHALF of the deceased (some of them want to turn around and see if he's somewhere among them - smirking).

Say something unexpected and quirky that catches 'em off-guard and sounds "just like him". Make them Laugh Out Loud.

Then, the universal truth of death - no matter any spiritual consciderations - To the living, the deceased is GONE; never to touch or talk with or laugh with or argue with again. I convey our collective longing for "one more time" with him.

I am genuinely moved by this recognition and have some difficulty in speaking. There is visible and audible sorrow even among those attending out of social obligation.

Finish on behalf of the deceased: Thanks for being here for me and my family. Enjoy every minute of your precious lives. I hope we meet agian somewhere down the road - I'll save you a seat at the table...

Four minutes. Tops. Not a scond more.

Something surprising that I didn't know about Graham is that he didn't get rich off of all those years in Congress. His net worth is estimated at < $1million - $3 million. I always thought his pro war stance was courting defense contractors, but I guess not. Good for him.

The average net worth of U.S. Senators including new ones is $4.5 million.

Back in the late 90s, the water polo team in my HS had a fundraiser where you just had to be in the audience for a wheel of fortune taping (the studio was just down the road). I had a friend on the team so I went. Interesting experience. They film several in a row. One of them happened to be an April Fool's episode where Alex Trebeck hosted and Pat Sajack and Vanna White played (for charity). That was a neat experience. But by the end of the last taping, we had all gotten bored (the high school group) and if someone made a mistake or landed on lose a turn or bankrupt, we were making a very loud and annoying 'AWWWWWWWWW' sound. As I recall, that actually did make it on air.

During breaks, the announcer guy would come out of his little booth and make small talk with the audience.

The people who seem to think everything is a Jewish conspiracy or bleed for Gazans while completely ignoring Nigerian Christians are tiresome.

You want to help Gazans? I'll tell you the only way to do it. First, kill a huge number of them. The all in Hamas leaders, the truly observant Muslims, the true Allah worshippers. Shut down the mosques, ban the koran, etc.

next, mandatory Christianity being preached in schools. Mandatory classes in the Old Testament. Preach the gospel of Peace.... with a whole lot of the Gospel of Charles Martel. They want Muslims to look up to? Preach the good side of Saladin. There are a few good Muslim leaders in world history: maybe talk about them. Preach hell and why militant Islamists go there.

Do that for 20 years, with public hangings of various "backsliders". The Charles Napier strategy.

Then, maybe, Gazans will be worth something. It'll take something like this. We had to do roughly the same to the Imperial Japanese: how many millions did we kill of the kind of people who were brainwashed enough to do a banzai charge, or throw their wives and children off a cliff in Saipan? We used Nukes on them and it still took their "god" the emporer, to do surrender.

How did the Spanish get rid of the Aztecs? Brute force and killing millions of them, whether directly or via disease. That's how you'll fix Gaza, sadly.

(Note that this method is how the scriptures preach Jesus will usher in the promised millenium too: by killing off the wicked in fire. So don't be screaming this is unchristian, this is precisely the method Jesus Himself is going to use,)

Stewart had to use a lot of F*cks to make that one work. The signal to his audience that we are all now going way beyond the rules, baby, f*ckin far out.

I laughed at a couple of his double-takes. Fraudulent use of the basic material, yes, totally; but Trump makes for a Big, as in bigly big, Target. So, funny if you just don't care at all about a man's life and death.

Graham was worth several million when he died. Not bad for a guy who spent his whole life in the military and public service.

But Lindsey Graham was never motivated by money. He spent the 80s in the US Airforce in JAG, then was a city/county attorney, and in 1992 got elected to public office. Like McCain, he cared nothing about the economy, budget or regulating Business.

He was obsessed with war, Foreign policy, and immigration. He was a champion of "free trade" because he saw it as a carrot/stick the US could wield over foreign countries.

He said he wanted to accomplish 3 things before he died, and all 3 were about foreign affairs.

Ive always been immune to Stewart's comedy. His raising his eyebrows causes some people to collapse with laughter - not me. I was always struck how unfunny he was without a script and a telepromter. I never watch him, unless Althouse posts about him. But your milage may vary.

I'll give him this, he's much better at hosting the show then the clowns who replaced him. But that's a low bar.

yah my drivers license says I live in South Carolina and the politics is icky. One failed candidate said it best in his ads- its a red state run like a blue state. Income sales property tax competing with top rates except ca and ny. Excise, fees- you betcha. Not much service to show for it except layers of bureaucrats. State government corruptible- no chance of buying a car dtc here. Hendricks makes sure of that…Pam Evette ran on turning SC to the FL model…calmly showed the exit…
