"Visitors in red, white and blue darkened with sweat stood in lines for hours, sometimes screaming in frustration and other times collapsing from exhaustion."

"The Independence Day parade was canceled and the Great American State Fair delayed. Steel fences and closed roads made photos of iconic monuments hard to capture. Both white supremacists and liberal activists marched through the city, each demanding their country back...."

I'm reading "America’s 250th celebrations marked by severe weather, political division/Officials ordered thousands of people to evacuate the National Mall after a severe weather warning that delayed President Donald Trump’s speech." That's in The Washington Post (not the NYT, as I'd accidentally had written).

"Small protests popped up throughout the day. One group lugged a 700-foot banner that read 'We the People' down Pennsylvania Avenue, condemning the president. About 50 people with another group, 'Refuse Fascism,' marched toward the White House, demanding that Trump leave office.... [H]undreds of uniformed members of Patriot Front, a white-supremacist group, marched toward the U.S. Capitol. Their faces covered in white masks, the men beat drums and carried flags — some upside down, others Confederate — as they chanted, 'Reclaim America!' Many gripped combat shields as they passed the Capitol building...."

How did the extra-important 4th look from your vantage point?

I was about to post a link to a story about Patriot Front! They can’t be FBI provocateurs, or sent by the SPLC, anymore. Their founder was parading with them unmasked. Unless they are getting heavily laundered Soros money, they must be real.

Unless they are an ironic long term performance art project. There are some funny shots of them riding the Metro in their balaclavas and sunglasses, minding their own business among the diverse DC clientele. Maybe they are just White Man Group?

The storm front rolled through just after we finished a wonderful barbeque of burgers, dogs and kielbasa. The local towns had staggered their fireworks, so Thursday and Friday were great, if last night was a washout. We have a strong backyard fireworks tradition, so for much of the afternoon it sounded as if the local militia was fighting an incursion at the state line a few miles over.

Did the Times write more on the Patriot Front ? SPLC payroll ?

You have to laugh at the left. They are so scared of their own white masked men peacefully marching whilst pretending they are Trump supporters , but not of their own white masked men in black burning down cities and assaulting real journalists We all know SPLC or some other NGO owns the Patriot Front farce.

I just listened to Part 1 of an Acquired episode on Disney - fascinating. The opening of Disneyland was apparently a bleep show, with rides - the ones that were open - breaking down, a boat ride ride sinking because the operator loaded it up with twice a many people as it was rated for, water fountains not yet hooked up to water, food running out, women's heels sinking into the fresh asphalt that was melting in the extreme heat. All on live television.

We spent the 4th in Pensacola. We went to what we thought was a baseball game, but they just opened the ballpark and made it a small fair for families. Hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs, brisket, cotton candy, water slides, corn hole, basketball, gymnastics, fireworks, and a symphony orchestra.

We met a couple as strangers. The husband served in the US Army with a college classmate of mine. We talked about the time he delivered a premature baby in a medivac helicopter piloted by my classmate. We reconnected the two service members after 25 years and then we left as friends.

I could wonder what you mean by “real.” They exist; they are people; they wearing a uniform of sorts while marching masked.

But are they a right-wing white supremecist group? Well, the ones positively identified in VA were left-wing activists. Did this group make any speeches? Handout leaflets? Talk about themselves and their goals?

Is any news organization reporting more than the supposed name of the group, their confederate flag (singular, as far as I can tell despite its appearance in every story) and their masks? If not, why not?

Rhetorical question. We know the answer.

I used to work with a guy who went to Disneyland on opening day as a kid. Loved it, had a great time. And people in general loved it despite any glitches because they kept going and kept going back. I think they had their millionth visitor within a couple of months.
I especially liked “food running out’ as if people would starve if they couldn’t have sustenance at the park. I don’t think anyone really cared.

I have some news that might make you think twice about what you are fighting for back home. Listeners, let's take a look at how things are going in your beautiful, faraway United States right now. It seems your grand celebration is not quite the paradise you remember.

Exhausted crowds: Visitors in red, white, and blue, darkened with sweat, stood in lines for hours.

Extreme frustration: People are sometimes screaming in frustration and other times collapsing from exhaustion.

Canceled celebrations: The Independence Day parade was completely canceled.

Delayed events: The Great American State Fair has been delayed.

Blocked views: Steel fences and closed roads made photos of iconic monuments hard to capture.

Civic unrest: Both white supremacists and liberal activists marched through the city, each demanding their country back.
Why stay out there in the miserable jungle heat when your own home front is falling apart? They do not even have room for you anymore. You might as well give up and think about your own survival.

Nice and mostly peaceful around here except for our one lousy, far-left Karen of a "neighbor" who displayed her flag upside down with a black ribbon trailing from it. She's a disaster as a human. For this and other reasons. Just her act is a middle finger to everyone in the neighborhood who loves this country. So much TDS in one person.

Later in the evening the locals were shooting off large fireworks displays- even with the ban on them due to an ongoing drought in the area. But they were shorter in duration than past years, so it wasn't too bad for the dog.

Aside from that, we had a nice day. As I've gotten older, I prefer peace over a mass gathering. And we had peace.

The footage out of DC is very disappointing and depressing. Compare the "Great American State Fair" to the Wisconsin State Fair. Why couldn't our country pull off a Wisconsin State Fair level celebration for our 250th anniversary? Why rival tents with baptismal tubs? Where did the money go for this party? Where is the money?! This reminds me of Kamala Harris campaign. So, so much money evaporated into thin air...paid to grifter contractors building backlot sets on the cheap. That's the State of America. Which team of grifters do you love the most?

It was an odd 4th from my vantage, but maybe a little better than I had expected. I recently moved from New England to a town in NJ a few miles from where I grew up. My childhood home was a very nice place to grow up. It ranged from blue collar to upper middle class, it was within view of the Manhattan skyline, and it had a thriving sense of community, whether little league, Pop Warner football, the Elks Club, the VFW, the Knights of Columbus, and so on. For nearly all of the 20th century, its politics were apolitically moderate, where the main issues seemed to be around things like whether to put lights in the high school football field so they could play the occasional Friday night game. It leaned very slightly toward the GOP, often having a GOP congressman and GOP-majority local government, but policies didn't really change noticeably when Democrats won. A residential construction boom started around 25 years ago, and the quiet suburb became much more of a city. Republicans haven't bothered running a candidate for city government in more than a decade, and the town newspaper stopped printing the increasingly long police blotter.

The town had a pretty big Juneteenth celebration that featured speeches from the sitting state senator and state assemblyman, both of which excoriated Republicans in Trenton and Washington who were trying to take away "our rights and our history." Speeches like that would have been unthinkable twenty years ago.

In contrast, from pictures I saw on Facebook, the town's annual 4th of July celebration was filled with people (mostly African-American, to be clear) wearing red, white, and blue, singing patriotic songs, and waving American flags. It was truly heartening, especially after the partisanship of Juneteenth.

I should have added that my old home town started its official US bicentennial celebration a year in advance with a "Believe in America" parade in 1975. There was a steady tempo of public events leading to the bicentennial. It was a big deal. In comparison, the 250th didn't feel special in any appreciable way. Locally, it was just another fireworks display. Not bad, but not special, either.

I didn't notice a lot of flags flying, along the way but saw a few. I was listening to WXRT's "Saturday Morning Flashback" show, which featured music from 1976, as I made my way around town, which included songs from Loudon Wainwright, the Ramones and Peter Frampton.

Later on I posted a few memories of the summer of '76 on social media, at which point a trans high school classmate decided to hijack the comment section of the post and write about why she hates Trump, Christian Nationalism and America and would move to Sault St. Marie, Canada, except that Canada won't allow her in. I left it out because it wouldn't apply to the temporary, World's Fair-like nature of this Freedom 250 celebration, but I probably should have!

What the WaPo gives us here is like what Kennedy rebuked Americans for back in the '60s: whichever attendees who saw the celebration not as an opportunity to, you know, celebrate their nations birthday, but rather as entertainment for THEM which must meet their exacting standards of both fun and comfort. Ask not, y'all.

We were in Ottawa yesterday, which was different! One interesting event was a parade of Canadian-Iranians, I'd estimate 1/3 to 1/2 mile long and the width of one of the main streets, waving not just Iranian flags but also American and (you'd better sit down, RCO et fortunately few al.) Israeli ones, as well as very long banners with the faces of the dead and pictures of Trump that said, "The future belongs to the patriots," chanting things like, "This is the final battle" and "No more Ayatollah" and slogans in support of the Crown Prince. They don't want a deal; they want regime change.

I would be very surprised if the US provides direct action on that score, but I am fully in favor of our encouraging it and even providing some material aid. The people of the Iranian diaspora could do so much to turn their country around, if given a real chance.

That would be me, for one. Triple-digit temperatures in July and August in the Washington, DC, area are historically not uncommon. In 1969 the US Army assigned a young draftee who happened to be me to an office in the Pentagon. In that office I was expected to be “strack” — shoes polished to a high shine, worsted wool dress greens with jacket buttoned up, tie knotted symmetrically, etc. some guys bought patent leather shoes out of pocket but I had an electrical shoe buffer from a thoughtful uncle which helped a lot. Temperatures, as I said above, were routinely in the upper 90s and reached into the triple digits now and again, with some regularity. No AC in our barracks, built as temporary structures for World War I (yes, One) and still used in the 1960s and 1970s.

I went to bed early, but the ladys tell me the fireworks at the high school were good. Of course there were a lot of parkinglot a neighborhood fireworks as well. Everybody is pretty good around here about wrapping it up around 10:30.

I do not care about masked right wingers marching with the Confederate flag in DC because I have seen masked Islamist terrorists marching with the Hezbollah flag in New York, and none of the liberals who are aghast at Patriot Front seemed to have a problem with that.

Even Paris had a better July 4th Celebration than Washington, D.C.:

Then move your fucking ass to Paris.

Good gawd. Do you realize just how tedious you are?

Biff: "I should have added that my old home town started its official US bicentennial celebration a year in advance with a "Believe in America" parade in 1975"

Yeah, I remember the bicentennial starting much earlier, too. Maybe because I was a kid and fixated on it, so anything there was to find, I found. But I also think the more centralized culture of the time did much more of a runup to 7/4/1976. Remember "Bicentennial Minutes?" And of course the bicentennial coins. I was a Cub Scout, and we had special Liberty Bell neckerchief slides. Vexillology was a big deal too: lots of companies had promotional stuff with the Gadsden Flag, Bennington Flag, Grand Union Flag, etc. Cereal prizes with bicentennial themes, board games, etc.

Things are just different now. Even a 100% patriotic country just wouldn't have the same centralized media as 1976. And we're not 100% patriotic - or at least not 100% agreed on what constitutes patriotism. Ken Burns did his AmRev series last year, but of course half the country hate-watched it. Trump tried to kick things off with the Army, Navy and Marine 250s, but the other half of the country wouldn't join in just because he shares a birthdate with the Army. And history is like figure skating - if you want to watch a show about the AmRev, there's something on one of your cable channels at any given time, plus all the YouTubes and podcasts.

Perhaps the Framers would like a country where every man celebrates the Fourth in his own way, under his own vine and fig tree. CC, JSM

If these "right wing" Patriot Front dudes are so scary, why isn't the press doing in-depth investigations on them?"

Because they don't want to actually have to report on what they already know- who's funding them.

Jesus, DD. Do I have to do all your thinking for you? Figure it out yourself.

Looked great. Got the family tickets to our favorite local minor league team back in March. Ended up with 2 extra, which we sold on stubhub, which covered our costs—woot!

It was delightful. Home team stomped the visiting one, a 5 song fireworkds display, and then home for olallieberry pie I’d made in the afternoon.

I love America.

Imagine being as butthurt over this nation's greatness as DD and the other resident liberal whiners on here.

"Liberal activists" look more like anarchists and insurrectionists if you look closer. All Dem run media, by contract, with the DNC must sugarcoat ALL THINGS Democrat. Have they asked the DNC Elite(ists) to condemn the Nazi from Maine running for US SENATE? Why the hell not? Not a chance that's ever going to happen. How's it feel to know you're being lied to every damn day. Play time is over. Wake up.
