"It used to be that the holiday brought out dad jeans and cropped tops and everyone looked slightly embarrassing, but the atmosphere was good-hearted and welcoming."

Writes Robin Givhan in "I Used to Love the Fourth of July" (NYT).

That's a gift link, so you don't have to guess about what went wrong with the 4th of July for Givhan. It's Trump. Right?
But this year, I can barely tolerate the sight of red, white and blue. When combined into a maximalist display of nationalist cheerleading, the colors make my heart ache. The flags on federal buildings are grand, but they hang alongside banners featuring President Trump’s scowling face.... It’s a wonder to see water dance in a fountain that had been dry for nearly 20 years. But that pleasure comes with the knowledge that the repairs were orchestrated by an administration that sees itself more as a regime than as the caretakers of a democracy....

NYT says it’s a free read, but email address or other login is required.

Regarding Givhan’s statement here, that the admin sees itself as a regime, seems to me to be pure projection. No one in the admin claims to be a regime, nor behaves as one. Evidence is all the court bickering that they participate in fully, including abiding by judicial outcomes as they occur.

It's such a sad way to live your life, letting the people you hate most decide what you will or won't like. To let some guy you've never met and who doesn't know you're alive tell you to abandon the pleasant memories of your youth and change what you consider fun.

What are they going to write about when Trump is gone?

This type of propaganda has become so tedious, repetitive, blogged for reasons unknown. Revenue has begun to creep into my suspicions. If I gave enough fractions of a fuck I might contemplate a stab at something between the founding fathers and dace barry about what our system has meant and the relevance to Robin’s whining, especially something about she gets to do it but really shouldn’t, and she should definitely stop any interest in destroying it in favor of some 19th century failure…I’m too busy this morning working out the pizza party and cookout menus and what embarrassing outfit I’m wearing to the parade tomorrow…

…either continue with the rants, crossing out Trump and pure crayon-ing in JD or Marco or a player to be named later OR pleasing their new masters with an austin powers “Finally those capitalist pigs will pay for their crimes, eh? Eh comrades? Eh?" OR nothing because the NYT knew too much, so the commies nixed em…

Givhan is such a fraud. Dad jeans have a baggy butt and are mid rise. Mom jeans are the high waisted ones.

…and now you people have made me contemplate low-rise dad jeans. Thanks america!

Givhan forgets that Trump ran and was elected because of the Occupy and BLM movements, runaway immigration, weakness against terrorism and bad trade deals. Reagan was the last president who was not riding the decline of America.

I shudder to think where we'd be if Hillary had won. Instead of a maximalist day of national pride, tomorrow would be a National Day of Atonement, with each citizen striving for the appropriate level of contrition.

They are reduced to being the rain on everybody else's parade.

It's the most childish behavior one can imagine, and if you are wondering how a bunch of spoiled, angry socialist brats are shouldering the Progressives aside, it's because of this.

They've made themselves irrelevant with their own outrageous policies, each one of them more ridiculous than the one before, testing whether you will remain in compliance with their demanding nonsense. No.

I am old enough to recall that every Republican POTUS in the last 75 years has been either evil or stupid or both. Trump is simply the latest iteration.

So now the elitist left's grievance against Trump is that he put his face on banners and his administration "sees itself as . . . a regime." What happened to canceling elections? What happened to rounding up opponents and putting them in jail? If Givhan's heart hurts, it's really because Trump is doing a lot of positive things that no reasonable American can despise him for (even if they don't necessarily agree).

The colors of the rainbow, so pretty in the sky

I see friends shaking hands, saying, "How do you do?"
They're all ignoring Trump Trump Trump
I hear babies cry, I watch them grow
They'll learn much more than I'll never know
And I think to myself

Per Givhans the Obama Library Ceremony was the way the 4th should be celeberated. Oh, and she still remembers the Fireworks display at the Clinton White House. Those were the days when fireworks made colors that were bright and friendly, unlike today under Trump when fireworks are menacing and too bright.

RCOCEAN II said...

And the Obama Library Cermony had diverse genders. Unlike Trump's stuff that only has 2.

"Federal Washington is looking sketchy as the country celebrates its birthday. It’s looking defensive and paranoid.

In recent months, Capitol Police checkpoints have been installed on the street that separates my home from my hardware store. Dupont Circle, the landmark that gives the surrounding neighborhood — with its deep roots in L.G.B.T.Q. history — its name, was fenced off by National Park Police during the Capital Pride Parade on June 20."

Oh for the days of Joe Biden when we had 20,000 National Guard Troops and sniper nests near the Capital to protect our noble Nancy Pelosi and great Mitch McConnell from the Proud boys.

ai says : The sentence "repairs were orchestrated" is generally a positive assessment.

I'm only hearin' negative. (Lisa Loeb)

More ai: "The Only Exception
It can lean neutral or slightly cynical if used in a political or corporate context to imply that the repairs were a staged "show" or a public relations stunt rather than a genuine fix. However, in 90% of contexts, it is a strong compliment to the management of a project."

Walla! : meaning "There it is; there you are. A misspelling and mispronunciation of the French "voilà," an exclamation calling attention to or expressing satisfaction with something that has just been presented or accomplished."

Looking up some more: "The surname Givhan primarily originates as an Americanized spelling variation of the Irish and Scottish surname Given or Givens. Ultimately derived from the Gaelic Mac Giobhán, meaning "son of Giobhán" (a diminutive of Gilbert/Gibbon), the name is rooted in Celtic and British Isles ancestry."

More ai: "Yes, Donald Trump does have Celtic ancestry, as his mother, Mary Anne MacLeod, was born and raised on the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides of Scotland. She was a native Scottish Gaelic speaker who immigrated to New York in the 1930s. Through the MacLeod clan, he holds deep Scottish roots."

You can think of an American presidency as a regime. I thought of Biden's that way, but does any administration describe or define or consider itself as a regime? Isn't it just another stupid, meaningless jibe?

Robin Givhan? Never heard of her. Maybe she's famous for not having been married to Mike Tyson? After Trump goes, maybe flags and fountains and fireworks will just be flags and fountains and fireworks for her.

You didn't hear any of this sort of histrionic nonsense from the right when Brandon was in office.

One difference between the right and the left is that the right understands that "the United States of America" is not the same thing as "the politicians in DC". The left doesn't.
