Billionaires take what they want from both parties. They're not ideologues and are too big to be tied down. What matters to them are business opportunities, not political philosophy or partisan loyalty. They can make the shift from one party to another, like Murdoch did from Thatcher's Tories to Tony Blair's New Labor.
But how much do the attitudes of the owners have to do with what the media does? Bill Paley of CBS wasn't any kind of liberal firebrand. Katharine Graham didn't hate Reagan. Her paper definitely did. Five or ten years down the road, if the Ellisons still own CBS will they have made much of a difference?
Perhaps Watson is a man with the courage of his convictions, but I wouldn't be surprised if this move turns out to be related to personal problems or a professional setback of some kind.
