Trump at his finest! But we have to face reality -- the US team absolutely sucked in its game against Belgium. When Freese muffed on the clearance attempt the game was no longer in doubt.

In Western Europe, those deep fried potato slices are called "Belge Frite" (Belgian Fries). I say we all start calling them French Fries. That'll show 'em.

Belgium played a very disciplined and connected game. The US team never figured it out and was totally outplayed. Trump had nothing to do with it.

By the way, a British player got a red card in the British victory over Mexico. Nobody questioned whether the red card was appropriate or deserved, and that player will be sitting out the next game. That is the primary difference from the card issued to Balogun, which virtually everyone agreed from the outset was not appropriate (except Trump-haters and Belgians who opined after the fact).
As it turned out Balogun was a non-factor.

Now can I go back to ignoring soccer?

I was at an important business meeting. Tried listening on the radio. Someone scored a goal. The announcer never said what team scored.

Watch in real time as the media invents and elaborates upon their new Trump myth of meddling in FIFA. Remember the old Corporate Media fig leaf that “we’re just asking questions”? Turns out all it took from Trump was asking “what’s the red card mean?” for FIFA to scramble and reverse the call instead of trying to explain why it was made. Now we learn (if you didn’t already know) that FIFA has had scandals repeatedly. People have been convicted for fixing games. Long before Trump asked about the red card there had been serious concerns about FIFA’s administration.

Corrupt, incompetent and excruciatingly mediocre, FIFA and Trump are a perfect match.

You know, I didn't check this. I did take it as parody. That is what I assumed, seriously. If it's not, it does make Trump look stupid, honestly. But I assume it's one of those stupid parodies that people do nowadays, with all the technological tools we have today on a mass scale. Is it parody or real?

I used to be a soccerphobe but I am no longer. I like the world cup and I like the Eurocup. Professional soccer on its own is a bore, but you throw in nationalism and the battle of the nations and its pretty interesting.

Of course, even thats going away because every European nation is filling up their teams with native born blacks, immigrant blacks, and the occassional muslim. Probably in 8 years Germany and England will playing for the Eurocup and both will have 10 blacks on the field with a white goal keeper.

RCOCEAN II said...

Soccer on the radio, LOL. I cant think anything more boring. Its definitely not a sport made for radio, unlike baseball. BB is the perfect radio sport because you can visualize almost everything going on.

Golf on the radio? May be OK. Tennis on the Radio - incredibly boring.

RCOCEAN II said...

The next important game is England v. Norway. The Vikings are the coolest underdog team left in the tournament. It'll be interesting to see how far they go. Sad to see Mexico lose, they had plenty of skill but couldn't match the sheer athletic ability of England.

Spain will probably beat Belgium and hopefully Argentina will get past Eygpt.

Soccer is lame. The original penalty was lame. It is lame that an in game official has the authority impose a future suspension. (Europe has a lot to learn about due process.) It's lame that FIFA allowed an official accused of fixing games to work a World Cup game because no matter what the optics are terrible and it puts a cloud over the outcome. It's lame that Trump called to ask a BIRTHRIGHT CITIZEN be allowed to play for the US team after spending so much time, money, effort and oxygen trying to strip him of his citizenship. It's super Euro lame that Belgium *appealed* the decision to let Flo play when it had nothing to do with them. Pussies. It's lame that when it was time to prove it on the field the goalie decided to abandon the goal. WTF.

Soccer just sucks and I'm happy to go back to forgetting about it. It's a game for children and should only be enjoyed before a trip through the Dairy Queen drive through.

Soccer used to be one of satirical topics for "Stuff White People Like". But those days are gone. I mean Trump likes Soccer. LOL

As SWPL pointed out, the love of soccer was usually fake and and consisted of middle-class types wearing English football team apparel and claiming to care about Arsenal winning the championship.

IRC, his blog stopped before the big whoop to do over the Womens world cup. But he could write a blog post on that. Because The mens world cup isnt "Stuff white people Like" - but the womens world cup is.

"Professional soccer has surged in popularity to become the third most followed sport in the U.S., with roughly 10% of Americans identifying it as their favorite. Major League Soccer (MLS) averages over 23,000 fans per game and the U.S. boasts an estimated 62.5 million fans nationwide."

Boy thats surprising! I thought MLS was on its last legs.

TRUMP HAS NO IDEA OF SPORTS. tHE ONLY GAME knicks LOST WAS WHEN HE SHOWED UP. In sports you get a bad call, thats how it goes, you dont run to mommy and say "THAT AINT FAIR" The player is a 3x birthright citizen Nigeria,UK and US the same guy that would be banned if up to trump. You know how many bad calls happen in sports regardless of right or wrong, thats the game.Dont try and rig it with guy who gave you a FAKE award and a peace prize.. Imagine that happened in any other country and the president of that country says "well tahi aint fair, take a look at it" wink wink Looks like have to go to war against Belgium now... :(

Ahhh…now I can cheer for England or Norway. Just sorry they face each other next. After them, likely France. But only because my husband thinks they play so beautifully. I’ve enjoyed this World Cup. I like the bit of March Madness in the early rounds. And I admire the fans who save up to attend, likely for years.

I don't know what was up with the US team but they played like shit. Got a lot of possession, but did nothing with it, and lost it before they could. Balogun was a non factor mostly because his midfielders were too incompetent to get him the ball.

Belgium didn't play that great either. If the US team from previous games had shown up, the result would have been more interesting.

As for the red card, it's amazing how it went from being almost universally acknowledged as unjust to "the ironclad rules of the game" once Trump and his phone got involved. To the point where Leftists everywhere suddenly declared they were rooting for Belgium in their blue and pink trans shirts. Funny, I remember when soccer was seen as a Left wing past time in the US, but when Trump and patriotism are involved, suddenly allegiances change.. How vile.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Trump plays golf with professionals, knows boxers and UFC fighters by name and can tell you their record. He once owned a USFL pro football team and liked college football too. He was a fixture at Nicks basketball games throughout the 80s and 90s but our local dinkydick has thoughts.

Poorly formed and barely comprehensible as expressed but they are “thoughts” in the most generous definition of mental activity. Facts wrong. Opinion based in bile not observation. IOW a typical leftist screed as scribbled here by the slowest kid in class.

The US men's soccer team suffered an embarrassing defeat after Donald Trump had a bizarre interaction with FIFA. So why does it feel like Joe Biden is the one who had Folarin Balogun's red card rescinded?

Paul Zrimsek said...

I don't get all the pearl-clutching. Even leaving aside the history of FIFA itself, this is a sport where the ethos is "anything for a win". In addition, the loudest complaints are coming from people who want every sphere of human endeavor to be governed by its own FIFA. Aside from the minor detail that Trump and Infantino did their dirty business over the phone rather than meeting at Davos, this was the Rules-Based International Order in action.

PM said...

Around here, soccer's what kids play until they're ready for baseball, basketball or football. Great exercise before snack-time.

Who the hell is "pearl clutching"?

RCOCEAN II said...

US team only got 2 shots on goal out of 7 shots. The Belgians had 7 shots on goal out of 15. The USA couldn't get through the Belgians defense.

The belgians were more skilled at playing together as a team. I dont know, was the US team thrown together at the last moment? Anyway, they never had the great players neccessary to get to quarter-finals. They did about as well as they could.

Football at the highest level has an intensity all of its own. It's brilliant, terrifying (can be dull - see Spain v Portugal) and so athletic.
