There's a strong temptation to uglify what Trump has made such a show of trying to beautify.

There's all that water in the Reflecting Pool. Is it well guarded? There are all those fountains and statues. And then there are the great stretches of well-tended lawn.

White House spokesman Davis Ingle responded to a request for comment on the markings with an email. “Anyone who engages in or endorses political violence or assassination culture must be condemned in the harshest terms possible,” Ingle wrote. “They should also immediately seek psychiatric help to treat their severe and debilitating case of Trump Derangement Syndrome that has warped their brains and made them sick in the head.”

I just wrote, at the end of the previous post, "The more grim, puritanical, humorless, imperious, and repressive you are, the funnier it is to make fun of you." There's a similar concept at play here: The more you show how much you care about pristine beauty, the more exciting it becomes to besmirch it. We can't have nice things.

Oh, but those who endorse the idea "86 47" might respond, these "nice things" are not nice. They are Trump things and therefore the ugliest things of all. To desecrate them is to move in the direction of true beauty.

…c’mon now. That’s not thinking ahead. Save something for the next one…

That last paragraph is starkly and darkly true.

it depends on what was used by the Democrat leaders to damage but chances are a little ammonium sulfate and lots
of water will green that right up in a few days…

Of all the stands to take, “I hate Trump for fixing fountains and pools and cleaning statues” is the most inexplicable. To hate anyone damages the hater and causes mental decay. When Hillary tweeted “Love Trumps Hate” she didn’t believe it and she’s been consumed by her own bile unable since then to say anything that doesn’t somehow relate to Trump.

I wish leftists could love America. Since they can’t maybe they should save themselves and move elsewhere.

Far too many of Trump's critics need to grow up, to stop being petulant babies. But they won't unless forced to.

It's on us as a society to create the right incentives for civic responsibility--we need to be less tolerant of behavior that crosses a line and more supportive of behavior that doesn't.

Start with bringing civics and American history back into schools and long prison sentences for the people who think their violence is speech.

These aren't Trump's things they are trying to uglify, they are our things. Many of them are things that had fallen into disrepair because previous administrations did not consider their stewardship of them important. Trump does. I appreciate that. I don't appreciate people who think their message is more important than our enjoyment.

It's not your property, Althouse. It belongs to all of us, and we also pay taxes to repair it when vandals destroy it.

Ann doesn't love america or Americans.
She is not representative of leftists, just a boomer daddy's girl forever rebelling from her privilege. Those women and their neutered offspring and second husbands elected Obama to lead them, and here we are today... false populism indeed.

Slavery through graffiti and sustainable labor. Entertaining abortive ideation to relieve a "burden", too. Hallmarks of a left-wing ideological bent.

Condemning the "8647" vandalism isn't about caring for pristine beauty. The Left is actively continuing to promote attempts to kill the President.

There's no doubt in my mind that there will be another attempt on the President's life.

TDS is a mass psychosis and the biggest mental health problem ever seen in the US.

I'll never forget an appearance by Sen. Amy Klobuchar in Iowa when she was running for President. Might have been in Red Oak. She said that, if elected President, she'd increase insurance coverage for mental health treatment. Huge applause.

An appropriate punishment for vandals, oh excuse me, I mean "graffitti artists", would be a stay in a public pillory.

I’m worried the perp wasn’t caught in the act. It must have taken a lot of time, materials, and suspicious lingering. Unless it was like Banksy’s statue and the perp just threw on a yellow vest.

Hope the Park Police aren’t backsliding from the proactivity Trump restored….CC, JSM

To properly commemorate this era, I believe the new "Arc de Trumphe" (sic) will be perfect, with one modification, namely an articulated penis on top that can elevate and stay erect during a Republican presidency but could also sag limply when there's a Democrat. Perhaps even have a giant pussyhat to cover it when there's a gestating XX or chestfeeding XY Democrat. You know, as a reconciliation gesture to bring us kinda-sorta together again.

I think one of the defining factors for the coming midterms might well be the Left's shenanigans during the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence- will the Democrats be able to not turn it all into a visible shit-show of violence and arson?

I would be astonished if there are not night vision cameras that captured the vandalism. It's DC. It's the National Mall. Hell, I have a camera with night vision that cost a whole $19 which shows me everything that happens in the vicinity of the chicken coop.

I think it’s easy to understand. Trump wants to restore things to their former beauty because he loves America. Leftists hate America, so they want to desecrate things to make them as ugly as the hate that fills their hearts.

It’s the dark spirit of Le Corbusier. Democrats love the feeling the masses get when they are exposed to ugly bleak public places.

Decades ago we snuck onto the high school football field at night and spelled out something derogatory to the next opponent, using strong lawn fertilizer on the field. No evidence until well after it rained two days later.
I still don't believe that was vandalism.

A few years ago there was a post of a truck with a wrap showing Biden hogtied in the bed of the truck and 8646 written in the post. Trump retweeted that post. If that post was not a threat....

War is peace.
Slavery is freedom.
Ugliness is beauty.

That's the mindset of the vandals.

That's a bit of a stretch. Graffiti is graffiti. My observation of the left is that they excel in destruction and suck at construction. They have no idea that civilization is a fight against entropy, labor is foreign to them.

Aggie said...

Although I could make out most of the numbers, I couldn't tell the means of the damage. Did they just trample on the grass? Did they spray glyphosate? The numbers were pretty regular and well- formed, dimensionally similar and laid out well - and that takes some organization and effort.

I would have thought that much effort would appear on the various cameras scattered around the area.

Anyway, I think the purpose of the destruction is more methodical, more purposed. It demeans and depresses, to be surrounded by such degradation, psychologically. It's not the free-expressions of graffiti artists. It's cultural nihilism.

The vandals must not be thats young, else they would have concentrated on the letter on the right side and made the 6 7 joke more apparent.

It would help a lot if liberals would stand up against the anarchists and leftists that ruined their party and their arguments. By now classical liberals should have dropped their knee jerk opposition to conservatism. The word "classical" is right in the name, and so is "liberal" for that matter. The people you vote with are more your enemy than conservatives ever were.

bagoh20 said...

How does someone who calls themselves a "classical liberal" vote for somebody like Platner?

The American public from not too long ago would be ashamed of having a nation full of wannabe assassins. We should be now, and not take it lightly. The banana republic longings of the left is a cancer on a great nation.

The left is nothing if not whiny, victim-headed, unproductive, miserable people whose full time is spent thinking of ways to debase civil society. They want everyone to be as miserable as they are.

They've actually been taught to do this as their highest moral endeavor.

Oysters are pretty disgusting — slimy, blobby, brainless, inert. Why go looking for other animals?

To those who find oysters disgusting, consider that many make a living capturing, selling, and retailing delicious oysters to a very willing group of customers.

To those pigs who eat McDonald's and drink Diet Cokes all
day, the real porker is really throwing his childish critiques around with no basis. Trump can fool around outside his marriages, but no one else can.

Yes, like we see you standing against the extremists in your own party.
Oh wait, that's right, you stand aside and say nothing when Achilles demands that leftists be executed.

Take your calls for civility and file them under the civility bullshit tag here

bagoh20 said...

Achilles can SAY whatever he wants, but I didn't hear anything about him or any other "extremists" on the right destroying American monuments or even a statue of Karl Marx. Maybe they would deface something cleaned up or improved by a Democrat, but it's impossible to find one.

bagoh20 said...

"Extremists" on the right are not trying to assassinate the President over and over in between actually shooting people while they speak, or play baseball, or go to school. I'm not calling for civility. I asking not to be killed for my opinion, and after that rehab is completed, maybe stop destroying everything you touch or see.

Trump has a very ordinary, somewhat middle class view of what makes for a nice public space. Clean, no crime, maybe a bit of neoclassical or baroque ornament or statuary tacked on here and there for ornament. I think it's a good fit for what the median American -- no, the median human being -- would like for his public spaces.

It's grimly unsurprising that Trump's opponents are all in on "no, we prefer squalor."
