"I think Platner is probably worse than Newsom but he reminds me more of Fetterman, who I originally liked. That may be why I have never liked Platner."

"I am intimately acquainted with the genre of New England failsons, being as I am a faildaughter of that sort of edge of aristocracy myself. He has no principles as far as I can tell and no real experience in much of anything but arrogance. He’s bad news through and through, and I suspect a Dino if you will. Even without the nazi tattoos and the extremely believable and coherent accusations of sexual wrongdoing and quite possibly assault, this is not someone we need in the Senate."

"Failsons" and "faildaughters"... I'd never noticed those words before, but, poking around, I can see they've been around for a while. Internet slang, originally. These days, you can see them in The New Yorker in serious prose, like: "Similarly, Early’s dissolute failson feels less like a self-portrait than like a darkly comic deflection, a gargoyle-ish stand-in for his creator’s anxieties."

And here's The Atlantic, just 2 days ago: "How much grace should we extend to people who screw up—like, really screw up? After many years as an addict and a general failson, Hunter Biden’s history includes felony gun convictions, tax evasion, smoking crack, and smoking Parmesan cheese that he thought was crack."

Meanwhile, this song lyric that played in my head:
Come mothers and fathers
Throughout the land
And don’t criticize
What you can’t understand
Your failsons and faildaughters
Are beyond your command...

Wonder why she doesn't like Fetterman now (well, not really)

Also as far as I can tell Fetterman's story has little in common with Platner's. I know there were some accusations of undeserved hype but he seems to have actually done the work of being a small-town mayor and was well enough thought of to earn the nomination as PA Lt Governor, far beyond anything the Commie with the Nazi tattoo has accomplished while still being supported by his parents.

That's odd- sounds just like what you might expect from a Democrat.

Writes someone called mygothlaundry in a Metafilter discussion based on a Liberal Currents article titled "Graham Platner and the Class Politics of Impunity/Solidarity with working class women never seems to enter into it."

LOL.

What is this "working class women" group we are talking about?

When she says 'Democrat-in-name-only', maybe she means he's really a commie, not a progressive, not a closet conservative or a milque toast Socialist. Don't forget, he bragged about training antifa in gun handling.

I would count housekeepers, cooks, waitresses and many others in this group. I've even known a woman who was a roofer. Blew my mind watching her haul bundles of shingles up the ladder. Not many of those...

The upper classes produce lots of offspring, so you obviously have to have some failures. Failson or faildaughter, though it's debatable that that's really a thing, I would like to see some examples, seem to be a class label. A way of separating the lucky upper class from the unlucky ones.

Plantner's mention of Hemingway seems apt, since Hemingway is a great example, he married well though.

Smoking Parmesan cheese is a bridge too far.

"..no real experience in much of anything but arrogance.."

that DOES sum him up.
so, NOW the question for Maine Dems is:
would you Rather be represented by the most moderate Republican?
or by a sex abusing, sex assaulting, nazi; that thinks Rape is "cool"?
the decision is ALL YOURS

Old and Slow: I re-roofed my house. I did have to break up the bundles to carry the shingles up, and it was a very unchallenging roof peak. But I also had to replace some rotting subroofing that I pulled up by ropes. I had ordered a dumpster that didn't come in time, so I staged the shingles by the street to wait for it. The Atlanta garbagemen put them all in their garbage truck before the dumpster arrived. I waited for them and tipped them $100 dollars the next time I saw them. Saved myself $300 dollars.

Turns out leaving a bottle of rye for them every Christmas, as my parents always did, really paid off. Be sure to tip your garbagemen and mail people.

i guess, the Good News for Platner is:
he will ALWAYS have rco.. at least until a Bigger Nazi comes around
right rco?

Fetterman's mere size suggests a predisposition to circulatory problems. I'm a paleoconservative, but I have always liked him, except for his attire.

Can you call that attire?

I've known plenty of working class women. My mother, among other things, was a laundress in a nursing home. My family did not go to a lot of fancy parties. The Democrat party doesn't feel much need to demonstrate solidarity with working class women because most of the men running it or horrible human beings who are have no problem exploiting women. And most working class women who are Democrats seem to be willing to go along with that.

I would suggest to the working class Democrat women that they come over to the dark side, we have superior cookies. With dabs of jelly in the middle sometimes.

You may have heard of trust-fund syndrome. Or shirtsleeves to shirtsleeves in 3 generations. Similar concepts describing underachieving people from money.

I haven’t heard “failson” in a long time. It’s not a common term, but it pops up from time to time.

Discernment is important. There's redemption and grace, which falls short of election to high office.

Platner was able to hold down a responsible job at the Chubb insurance group for over a year before joining AmeriCorps. He was a successful mayor, though one forever at odds with the city council. Like Platner, though, he took some time to "find himself." They both had a record of eccentric behavior, Fetterman in the city council, Platner online (and apparently on dates as well). Fetterman even had his own tattoo story. His arm read "I will make you hurt," a line from the Nine Inch Nails song that Johnny Cash covered (now it's a black rectangle). You can think of both as middle class failsons, but neither appears to have been on the fringe of any aristocracy. So the expectation of those who selected Platner was that he'd be another Fetterman (though one who wouldn't turn on the party). It's not surprising that the talent spotters didn't properly vet Platner: they are probably failsons and faildaughters themslves.

I was certain that “failson” must be an Old English word, but Grok claims its origin to be around 2010. Disappointing actually. It’s a great-sounding word.

Very Anglo-Saxonish.

"I suspect a DINO if you will." What means? My first thought was dinosaur, but apparently it means "Democrat in Name Only." Of course, accusations of "sexual wrongdoing" were never an obstacle to success in the Democratic Party.

Because he might turn into Fetterman!

That's what terrifies her. Not the Nazi tattoo, not the sexual wrongdoing, not even sexual assault. What if he turns into a Republican! Oh the horror. You just can't vote for a man, ever.

ha ha ha ha

RINOs are dangerous

DINOs are extinct. I'm sure they would be scary, if they existed. John Fetterman votes with the Democrats 91% of the time.

Susan Collins votes with Democrats 75% of the time.

I wrote clumsily there. I meant I've never heard specifically of of a faildaughter.

Republicans are going to dump a lot of money into this race, but I still like Platner's odds. It is a bit like 2020 in reverse, when Collins faced a Democratic opponent (Sara Gideon) who had a mountain of cash that just flooded people's homes with ads, mailers and garbage. You need a lot of money to run a Senate campaign, but there is a point of diminishing returns where the battle lines are clearly defined, and people have made up their minds. The extra spending can just make people angry and less inclined to vote for the favored candidate.

Collins should have a massive cash advantage, but she is a known quantity, highly unpopular in the state, and this is one of those election cycles where voters are likely to be very angry.

The fact that Platner is an outsider is a net asset, not a liability in this election cycle. He should have a sufficient amount of money to run a credible campaign, and voters have been able to see the various attack lines so far for what they are (bad faith attempts to smear him because of concerns that he might be an independent voice and advocate for people who are not super-rich). Platner's line from his victory speech that he will be the "Senator for people who can't afford to buy a Senator" will resonate with a lot of voters. This is American style populism in its best form.
