Was Donald Trump too mean to Norah O'Donnell on "60 Minutes" last night? I'll argue both sides.

Maybe you've noticed there's a big uproar over this part of the show:

Watch the video to get the full emotional effect. Here's the transcript:
O'Donnell: The so-called manifesto is a stunning thing to read. Mr. President, he appears to reference a motive. In it, he writes this, quote, "Administration officials, they are targets." And he also wrote this: "I am no longer willing to permit a pedophile, rapist, and traitor to coat my hands with his crimes." What's your reaction to that?
Trump: Well, I was waiting for you to read that because I knew you would, because you're horrible people. Horrible people. Yeah, he did write that. Uh, I'm not a rapist. I didn't rape anybody.
O'Donnell: Oh, you think he was referring to you?
Trump:  Excuse me. Excuse me. Uh, I'm not a pedophile. You read that crap from some sick person. Uh, I got associated with stuff that has nothing to do with me. I was totally exonerated. Your friends on the other side of the plate are the ones that were involved with, let's say, Epstein or other things. But I said to myself, you know, I'll do this interview and they'll probably—I read the manifesto. You know, he's a sick person. But you should be ashamed of yourself reading that because I'm not any of those things.
O'Donnell: Mr. President, these are the gunman's words.
Trump:  Excuse me. Excuse me. You shouldn't be reading that on "60 Minutes." You're a disgrace. But go ahead. Let's finish the interview....

Here's my first reaction to that, which I have accurately preserved because I immediately texted this to the person who'd sent me the video:

He really tried to intimidate her at one point, but she just put up with it and kept going. I thought that was admirable of her. Generally, he was fine, but I don’t think he should’ve been so mean to her at that one point.

After a little conversation at Meadhouse, I felt motivated to add this to my text conversation:

On the other hand, she and her people had selected one passage that could be read to his face in an effort to antagonize him and just poison the atmosphere so he threw it back at her and insisted on getting the upper hand. He’s a famously good counter puncher.

In the cold light of morning, I can see how these 2 positions are not inconsistent, but I won't trouble you with that. I'll just do a poll.

Which is the better response to that "60 Minutes" confrontation?

Of course they were going to read that. It's absolutely perfect. WE didn't call you a pedophile, rapist, and traitor, it was somebody else as if he came up with that description on his own.

The problem is that not enough people on the right or the left (presumably there are a few on the left such as Fetterman who aren’t complete assholes and/or idiots) or in the media who do push back.

He tried to intimidate Norah O'Donnell ? Seriously? How about he tried to shame her into being a better (or an actual) journalist? Imagine anyone at 60 Minutes asking that kind of question to a prominent Democrat. If they did so it would be their last day on the job and they know it.

Chris said...

Holy crap. The media literally created this guy, and then threw his words, that he got FROM the media in trumps face and you think he was mean to the interviewer? WTaF?

Christopher B said...

She wasn't "holding her own", either. She was deflecting responsibility for being the source of Cole's claims.

Why do you think he was referring to you? As if the press has never reported any of those accusations.

It was the gunman's words. As if he wasn't parroting claims we see every day from every lefty bot commenting here.

Anything on 60 Minutes in an election year is produced only to help Democrats get elected. No other reason. Apparently the think tanks and law firms have Mr Trump don’t you feel responsible for us trying to kill you? as a weapon in their arsenal this cycle…

You know the rest of the media was sending her congratulatory tweets on labelling Trump a rapist etc….

Tina Trent said...

Obama would be considered courageous for rejecting that question with equal vigor. Then again, he would never be asked it in that way in the first place. The two media narratives emerging from this assassination attempt are equally grotesque and merit nothing but contempt: does Trump think the assassin was targeting him, and what does Trump feel about being called a pedophile and a rapist, as if such false accusations are legitimate and are cause to murder him and others. O'Donnell got the response she deserved.

The Dems have inspired three - three! - people to try to kill him. These would-be assassins get their Fake News from the MSM.

Right after the latest attempt, many Dems absurdly suggested that it was staged in order to distract from Epstein.

The media and Dems are united in their unjustified effort to get Trump.

Notice how calm and cool Trump was. He’s tired of this BS.

Trump is the most mentally tough person I’ve ever seen. The IRGC better realize that and do that deal.

"Pedophile" is an epithet they decided to use before they lose. The ongoing accelerating convergence of islamofascism with garden variety Democrat-Socialist fascism is going to put a crimp in their use of that term. When half your coalition see 10YO girls as marriageable then the word kind of loses its sting. The same way they wore out racism. The party of Sen. Sheldon Whitehouse would like a word.

Wilbur said...

Nora, many people in this nation consider nothing but a sock-puppet for the DNC. What's your reaction to that?

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

And holistically speaking, can someone right of center actually be "too mean" to a member of the seditious anti-profession of "journalist?" We are constantly slandered by the media, a decidedly "left wing" media, that labels everything normal and traditional as Far Right Wing. Not just rightish, FAR right. Every time.

The sins of the media demand extreme contempt from the American public. Trump went easy on O'Donnell. They wrote the script, fed it to the crazies, quoted the perp saying it and read it back to Trump, completing the news creation loop they love so much.

Norah gave off a frantic vibe to pursue her mission to dirty Trump and try to make him look bad.

Imagine someone claimed Althouse was an adulterer as obvious by her having been married twice. Then that someone attempted to physically harm Althouse and anyone associated with her, such as Meade, with that claim of adultery being the excuse.

Having survived the potential assault, the question poised to Althouse, perhaps after a discussion of her reaction to the potential assault, is “what’s your reaction to being called an adulterer?” Would she claim “the notion I’m an adulterer is ludicrous both on merit and as an excuse to violence”? Would she claim “the attacker is sick as is everything they think, say, and act”? Might she protest whatever system (media, poor education, religion, etc.) that convinced the attacker that her life has anything to do with being an adulterer?

If it isn’t clear. I don’t think Althouse is an adulterer or deserving of most written attacks on her character. But she is the head of this blog, which comes with insight in her personal life and exposure to whack accusations of her character. Does that mean a “legitimate” news organization is just in bringing up every accusation made against her and demanding she defend them? Especially when a third person, who was charged with literally defending her, is injured by the attacker, and that injury is also excused by the attacker via that claim?

The real political subtext here is that the assassination attempt rained on Obama's carefully timed, triumphant, though essestially no-show return to "unite" the Democrats. I bet he could not be more livid. He should think even longer before he speaks, if that is possible. This should reopen queries about his 8+ year relations with real terrorist groups. The great orator really screwed up everything he said in the wake of the event. He could have spun it differently, as at Carter's funeral, and actually gained points. Trump would have invited him to the White House. It was previously a real opportunity for him, to be fair. He screwed it up.

Trump is a Honey Badger. If they let him, he would have served the reporters Burger King and disarmed that foppish incel himself. But he was clearly concerned for both Melania and the young female Asian reporter running the event. Who else could do such a relaxed, yet blade-sharp presser in under an hour and tolerate the idiot wind gotcha questions they asked, with panache? He was smart. He just gave them more rope to expose themselves by answering their dumb and dumber questions.

How did the shooter get from a member of a "nerf club" to a gun affiando? Why was he called a teacher when he was a tutor who may never have held what is understood by the rest of us as a full-time job? That's the key to his real political affiliations and the mefia's toxic perfidy. Did he still live with his wealthy parents at 31? A disability or mental breakdown would explain that, kindly, and it would be met with understanding. We need real reporters to contextualize the real story. It looks like a kind and functional family. Did he have a mental issue?

He tried to kill a federal agent. Point blank. Life in prison, no parole. Enough. Those fine public servants risked their lives to save people who hate them. Meanwhile, at the same time, two cops ambushed in a hospital in Chicago: one dead, one clinging to life.

This is the dark brilliance of the left which no Republican can ever master. First the “Oh.” Such devious faux surprise. “It never occurred to me,” she serpentinely compresses into one two-letter word. Now she can innocently proceed with the vile indictment because Trump himself made it.

The left/right divide stands on opposite cliff edges of that “Oh” chasm. It’s the difference between aggressive and passive-aggressive, between straight up and oblique, between the spirit of the law and the letter of it. It’s what got Eve to bite the forbidden fruit and what got Jesus crucified. The Right and especially Trump will never be good at this insidious verbal tactic but one good thing is this: Trump knows straight up aggression wins in the end.

Quoting from a suspect’s manifesto, especially if it references a public figure, is absolutely fair game. It’s relevant, and a journalist would be hard-pressed to ignore it. But the specific selection of which lines to quote—and how they’re presented in an interview—is not neutral. It shapes the tone of the exchange and, to some degree, the reaction it produces.

That doesn’t mean the question was improper. It means it was a choice.

And that’s where I think Ann is trying to redirect the conversation. Not toward defending Trump’s tone, but toward recognizing that journalism isn’t just about what’s true—it’s also about how truth is framed, introduced, and delivered. Interviews aren’t passive events; they’re constructed interactions.

At the same time, there’s a balance here that shouldn’t get lost. If a manifesto contains disturbing or politically charged content, confronting a public figure with it is part of the job. Journalism that avoids discomfort risks becoming access-driven rather than accountability-driven.

So the real question isn’t whether the exchange was “too mean” or “too aggressive.” It’s whether it was more informative than performative. Did it help the public better understand the issue, or did it primarily generate a moment?

Reasonable people can land on either side of that. But stepping back and examining how the moment was constructed—before deciding what to think about it—is probably the more useful exercise.

Part of this issue has to do with the fact that women don't really want equality with men they just want all of the rewards of having power and influence at the same level of men without having to fulfill the same level of responsibility. Perhaps if women practiced chivalry we might take their claims of equality more seriously.

Men confront men all the time. Most of the time it is with words and arguments that can get heated. Sometimes you have to blow off some steam to diffuse the situation and to get someone to understand that they are not going to allow you to fuck with them. I remember in elementary school there was a 5th grade teacher who had parachuted behind the lines into Normandy. He taught us boys in his classroom and on the playground that you don't cross boundaries. However, if someone crossed a boundary with you, you we're justified to retaliate and to defend your boundaries either with words or fists.

Women in the workplace arena declaring themselves to want equality have no idea that crossing boundaries has consequences and are shocked and offended when they are called to the carpet on their use of fighting words.

It's not your fault. We've been treating you like children and you behave like little girls and call it emotional intelligence when in fact it is neither. It's calculated stupidity because you don't think men can defend themselves with vigor because of the tradition that it is inappropriate for a man to hit back at a girl. I think part of it is many women still think they have the power of the pussy over men, but that doesn't work in a business environment nowadays and so women are finding it frustrating that they actually have to do the hard quiet work that men do and open themselves up to constructive criticism and understand what true teamwork and leadership entails.

I rarely criticize Althouse for her left of center viewpoints on things. She's smart and willing to challenge her own assumptions on a near daily basis. Something to be admired and rarely seen in political argument. But I find the fact that anyone can reach either interpretation of what happened in the interview mystifying. What is the nature of her thought processes that allow willful ignorance to play a role in her conclusions? Most of the time I would place the blame on stupidity or dishonesty, but don't think that's a possibility here. But like most leftist reasoning there's an aversion to reality underlying the thinking process that is totally foreign to me. Very strange.

The point of my comment is made above. Others make the points about what was said, but really just boils down to the fact that O'Donnell insulted the POTUS on national news knowing full well she was doing it. What I don't get is how a different good faith conclusion can be reached.

No, what exactly would happen? The Vichy GOP would immediately try to go back to the Bush era while the FBI frantically tried to round up as many dissident influencers before the dam burst. As for NOD, the President had a fine opportunity to introduce her to the concept of "fighting words."

Agree with you on the Vichy GOP. But anyone in the 47 admin is if not a card-carrying MAGAite, then at least someone who's plighted their troth to Trump. Which means they know they are in for Dem lawfare, and now just warfare, while the RINOs stand aside and look.

Which means the survivors of the 47 admin will keep fighting harder if Trump is killed. Some to keep the MAGA faith - others out of offensive self-defense. The Bureau under Kash won't be trying to prophylactically lock up righties, that's for sure. JD Pinochet will definitely be on the revenge tip. Same with Francisco Hegseth and all the other Fox people in the Cabinet. Rubio Galtieri will keep Trump's foreign policy going, if only because he's an attention to detail guy.

And we haven't even gotten yet to the Trump family members who have been participating actively in diplomacy. They will either keep those efforts going, or, if the country is really swinging the other way, they'll get their foreign contacts to do other stuff, iykwim.

But with Rose taken out, she has taken on the role of the nice girl asking mean questions, for no other reason that those are the questions that CBS has given her. Everyone hates rapists and pedophiles, so Trump, being hated, must be one. Of course, most of the rapists and real pedophiles are on the left, esp the elite left where Norah resides. I was a little shocked to see Norah O'Donnell recite that quote from the manifesto. That was a real low blow to Trump. A responsible journalist would simply have asked generally about the accusations that the assassin put in his manifesto. So it was obvious to me that it was an intentional attach on Trump by O'Donnell.

The vibe I got from Trump was that he felt that he had to respond to that. That's a part of his public image. He wants/needs to be known as the kind of person who will always hit back when attacked.

So basically, they both acted badly. But Norah started it. It's like that taboo we have in our culture about a man hitting a woman in response to her hitting him first. Hitting people is usually bad, but you should not be disappointed at a man for hitting a women when you wouldn't be disappointed in that man for hitting another man in the same situation.

Well the correct response from a man hit by a woman would be to put her over his knee and spank her. A reminder of her comparative helplessness, without doing any lasting damage.

I'm not sure what the metaphorical equivalent of that would be for a man "hit" by a woman's disrespectful remark. Trump's reaction wasn't exactly a spanking, because it showed she didn't meet the minimum standard of decent society. A true metaphorical spanking would remind her that she's come unarmed to a battle of wits, that we really don't expect her to meet the minimum standards, and she only participates in society's conversations because she's amusing to have around, like a French Bulldog or pug. I learned from patriot research strategies after Jan 6 to get to the bottom of what happened here.

The man is a perfectly innocent citizen who was in DC to take in the history and attractions of the city. He brought weapons with him for self defense as recommended by NRA and as allowed by the constitution. During his comings and going to and from the hotel he observed lax security and inadequate protection for this very important gathering of all important members of the administration.

Just as the festivities were starting, he got a call from what I believe to be AntiFa with the false information that there would be an attack. Being a patriot and a well armed member of a well regulated militia he grabbed his weapons and ran as fast as he could to take a position to help defend the President and his cabinet. As he ran through the security checkpoint he tripped and his gun fired accidentally at the agent nearby. He fell and then was mistakenly arrested. This is all a misunderstanding which will be cleared up very soon. He fully expects to be pardoned if he is erroneously convicted .

This should be very obvious to everyone who does their own research. /s
