Said Sabrina Carpenter, quoted in "Sabrina Carpenter Apologizes for Mistaking Arabic Celebration Call With Yodeling During Coachella Performance: 'Could Have Handled it Better'" (Variety).
Here's how it looked and what she said at the time:
Sabrina Carpenter is currently at the mercy of cancel culture after this exchange at Coachella last night.

Fans appeared divided over Carpenter’s response on social media. One user called it “insensitive and Islamaphobic.” Another wrote: “She’s not obligated to like anything, but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect.”AND: Does yodeling seem... too country and somehow right wing?

"but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect."
More childish bullshit. The idea that everyone has to respect every culture and all their practices sounds like someone who is stuck in an 8 year old's mentality of everyone has to be nice.
"Could have handled it better!" is very Trumpian. Not the apology aspect, but the phrasing.
The battle call of the left is: "You can't say that!"
What I like about this -- aside from how hot she is -- is how honest she is about her mistake.
She's an apolitical artist, obviously. She either doesn't know about the religious and political optics, or she just doesn't care. She's being honest and straight. She has no fear of Islam (which is good, right?)
But she also has no fear of our PC culture. And she refuses to bow down to that. She is not going to pretend and abash herself and beg for leftist approval. Good for her.
"...but after receiving the information...."
That's an ill phrase; a vile phrase.
Like... brought to her by Amazon Delivery or Federal Express?
The point of MAGA is to preserve a culture?
Islamic “”culture” has no respect for “infidels” (ALL “other” cultures). I don’t respect “Eat shit or die”. And I certainly don’t give a damn about what the NY Times opinion
I thought yodeling was Swiss or Austrian, not American country.
Oh, My Lord, Althouse. You added in the Singing Brakeman! Love that man. Yee Ha.
The moral of the story is it’s fun to shit on Sabrina Carpenter…
Does yodeling seem... too country and somehow right wing?
Jimmie Rodgers's Blue Yodel #9 was a collaboration with Louis Armstrong, which was a very early example of "game respects game."
Jimmie Rodgers was the first thing I thought about when I saw 'yodel', and specifically, this song (but not this version, I have another).
The first and only time I heard that Islamic yodeling was in the movie, Jewel of the Nile. Not nearly as good as Romancing the Stone, but fun.
"Sufis rule."
In the movie, Sufis were the peace lovers of Islam.
Years later, I was at work, chatting with an Islamic lawyer. Good guy, serious, he would get on his knees and pray five times a day. Anyway, I asked him, "What do you think of Sufis?"
And he went on a passionate anti-Sufi rant. He really did not like those Sufis.
Fingernails on a chalkboard sound better
Whatever her reaction was, it wasn’t islamophobic. Carpenter is well known for dry humping on stage, so anyone attending her concert can’t possibly be a strict adherent of any Muslim denomination. The clip didn’t really capture the call itself, but I am assuming it’s the ululation, which is Arab but pre-Islamic. And the ululatrix sounds like a young woman.
So you had an Anglo woman and an Arab one, both aggressively secular, arguing over the aesthetics of a completely non religious vocalization. Where in that do you find Islamophobia? CC, JSM
Here's an example of what it is. Its pretty cute:

Its just so insane in the USA and the UK. Its Ok to trash Islam and Arabs but don't you criticize Israel in any way or we'll destroy you. Or even express annoyance at "The jews". (Go talk to ye about that). Imagine if some Orthodox jew had made some noise at her concert and she had the same reaction. LOL.
Having said that, I think she was just talking off the cuff and is obviously ignorant of Arab Culture. She's apologized and that's the end of that.
Yodeling is a gay call to resonance in an echo chamber.
I pay for a concert to hear the performer not the audience. Loud vocalization unrelated to the song? No. Loud vocalization during a quiet moment in the music? No.
She shouldn't have apologized. The woman who interrupted everyone else's concert experience should have apologized.
The left are frantically pushing adherence to pure acceptance of Radical Islam.
Radicalism loves more radicalism.
I am assuming it’s the ululation
that's right
which is Arab but pre-Islamic.
nice, I didn't know that
The left need the same type of power Islamic supremacist males hold over its subjects.
Hollywood pushes that hard. You shall not be Islamiophobic. - Punishment is death.
Hindus used to bury live women with their dead husbands
until the British stopped it
RC Cola - you trash Israel all the time. So do many on the left.
What is your point -
Blue Yodel 9
The left are obsessed with pushing out and down anything they consider "right wing" - which is slowly turning into smaller and smaller groups of pure acceptance:
The Islamic/ communist factor..
Coachella - ugh.
I'd rather not.
Islam is incompatible with Western Civilization.
bury live women with their dead husbands
RAATS has evolved as RAAT with social progress in liberal culture. You've come a long way, baby.
Thanks for the Jimmie Rodgers! Great song. As for the rest of this tempest in a teapot, who cares? It will be forgotten in 15 minutes. Unless you live in Dearborn or the middle east (but I repeat myself), there is no reason to be aware of Arab culture. She should have just completely ignored the kerfuffle.
Suttee was the burning of widows, not burial alive.
That said, I know ululation when I hear it, and now I also know that Sabrina Carpenter is a pop singer. And a real cutie.
RC Cola - you trash Israel all the time. So do many on the left.
His heart was hardened. National Socialism is a left-wing religious ideology that embraces Diversity, suckles in redistributive change schemes, and entertains abortive ideation with transhumane pride and prejudice.
The immolation of widows alive and sequestration of their carbon ashes dead. Nuptial rites.
thanks Narr
Ululation is an "auditory control and terrorism" move in that it demands attention above all other social sounds. I always hear it as sustainable and monotonous screaming but without throat damage.
Yodeling attempts to make controlled and melodic music with similar vocal/throat movements. Also consider Asian throat singing and African click languages -- unconventional stuff is possible.
In all cases, is the sound appropriate for the venue or does it interrupt the performer? De facto heckling? De facto selfish attention? Functional stage diving without moving from a seat?
Islamophobic? People tend to think all Arabs are Muslim. They are not.
I wonder about people who have never heard that sound. But then, I wonder why I have.
Yodeling happens in rocky mountains, over sandy dunes. Rapping happens around the fire amidst pride parades, mostly on the plains.
Sabrina is a gay man's idea of sexy.
Considering the current pandemic of rape/murder/hate/grooming/terrorism being comitting by the islamist death cultists, being islamistphobic seems quite a reasonable position to take.
Coachella - ugh.
Yah, that's the real problem right there...
"but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect.”
Female genital mutilation is a cultural thing. How much respect is expected there?
Looking at the video RCO posted of women doing this, I don't think it really sounds like a yodel. It is a bunch of women sticking their tongues out and flapping them around.
I've seen it often enough before in movies and news. It is usually, we are told, an outcry of "Death to the great Satan" or some such. I've never seen it, that I know of, used in a celebratory or joyful manner.
OTOH, if the women were not shouting "death to the great satan" but "We love Justin Bieber" I would have no way of knowing the difference.

"The moral of the story is it’s fun to shit on Sabrina Carpenter…"
That can't be fun for her.
Especially if you just ate at Taco Bell.
I am Laslo.
I think she was genuinely afraid but tried to keep it lighthearted by pretending she didn't know what she was hearing. Look at her face. Look how she's trapped in an enclosed alcove. I think she feared violence but was afraid to say it, lest she be called Islamophobic... but she was called Islamophobic anyway.
Nobody's thinking of Jimmy Rodgers or Gene Autry or Slim Whitman. Yodeling is too associated with Austria, which is too associated with "The Sound of Music," and everybody was white in the movie.
From Wikipedia: "Carpenter was homeschooled.... She began studying voice at the age of six. Around the age of ten, she began posting videos on YouTube of herself singing Christina Aguilera and Adele songs. Her father built a recording studio for her to fuel her passion for music...."
The enclosed space with the little keyboard feels like a teenager living a sheltered life and learning music at home.
She's 26 now. Imagine how she feels. She's very successful, but she is vulnerable. Again, look at her face as she hears that triumphant cry in the audience. Did she fear attack?

"Nobody's thinking of Jimmy Rodgers or Gene Autry or Slim Whitman. Yodeling is too associated with Austria, which is too associated with "The Sound of Music"...."
I think people with more of a country music background feel differently. Not everyone is grounded in "The Sound of Music." I didn't even know SOM had yodeling in it. Never seen the thing.
Oh, wait. I know "Lonely Goatherd." Ugh!
Most Americans of a certain age probably first encountered ululation early in the movie "Patton."
'I know "Lonely Goatherd." Ugh!'
I kinda like Laibach's version.
In the north african campaign around constantine
stop it. I love the Sound of Music.
Yodeling in rock: Hocus Pocus. The Vandals did a good cover of this in the 80's.
The Lonely Goatherd from SOM has some lovely yodeling. I associate yodeling with the Cliffhanger game on The Price is Right..
I just discovered I’m quite uncomfortable discussing The Lonely Goatherd in a post about cultural insensitivity to the middle east…is that culturally insensitive?
I think she thought the yodeling was sarcastic - “What a hick!”
A great number of celebrities are dopes.
She said a dopey thing.
How likely is it that she meant to disrespect Islam?
Quit getting your panties/boxers in a bunch over every utterance by a dope.
"I think she thought the yodeling was sarcastic - “What a hick!”"
That might be, if she really did hear it as yodeling.
It's her music, and some nutcase is yodeling in the middle of it.
Who gives a shit whether it's your "culture." Stop it.
If some guy in liederhosen showed up and started actually yodeling during her performance, nobody would be offended if she told him to knock it off. And nobody would accept "it's my culture" as a reason to find it acceptable.
rehajm just made me guffaw... fa....fa, la,la,la,la.
And now I've got "Una Paloma Blanca" stuck in my head.
Yokels Yodel
I've never listened to any of her music, but she certainly looks harmonic.........I think you should refrain from shouting fire in a crowded theater. I don't recommend shouting Allah akhbar or doing that Zaghrouta thing either. The Manchester massacre at an Ariana Grande concert happened in 2017 and had an impressive body count. Our relations with the Muslim world were much less tense back then.
Any post that links to Jimmie Rodgers is A-OK with Wilbur.
Not to mention that taylor swift concert in vienna
That was cancelled because a chechen was gonna bomb it
The great Islamic poet Rumi was a Sufi.
"When we are dead, seek not our tomb in the earth, but find it in the hearts of men."
Rumi died on December 17, 1273 in Konya. His death was mourned by the diverse community of Konya, with local Christians and Jews joining the crowd that converged to bid farewell as his body was carried through the city.
RIP, Rumi, and God bless
I'm betting it was more likely her thought process went something like "hear weird vocalization" > "funny word for vocalization" > YODEL!
And of course since it was actually Muzzie-adjacent, everybody's knickers get twisted.
Sabrina is a gay man's idea of sexy.
Are you speaking for gay men? Because straight men like her too.
I don't know her music. I just saw her for the first time today. But she's very hot in this interview.
Her damn album cover is like a homage to Smell the Glove. If that's intentional, she is way cool.
Definitely haram
I'm with Mary Beth on this one. She looked to be concentrating and the commotion of sound with a language she likely doesn't understand took her out of preparation for her next song. I think she wanted it to stop, so she could focus on her performance.
Having worked years ushering professional musicals while in HS; we were always on the lookout to prevent disruption for the actors on stage and the audience. We didn't want people making noises, flashing lights, exiting out a door that might let in light. I get that Coachella is more of an outdoor, anything goes event, but I suspect the performer still doesn't like being disrupted.
“Stop the yodeling!”

It’s not our culture. And no, there is no requirement that it automatically has to be respected just because it’s “culture”. If they are so offended, they can GTFO.

I understand beheading Jews is part of someone’s culture.
Sorry. Did I offend someone?
I remember that scene from Patton. Didnt understand at the time that I was being subtly propagandized to dislike arabs.
This is made clear when we see the Arabs scavenging on the Kasserine Pass battlefield. "They stip our dead before we even have time to bury them" says the GI escort to Omar Bradley. Then the GI fires his Thompson in the air, and the primitive Arabs scurry off with their Donkeys.
That we're using their country as a battlefied is never mentioned nor does any Tunisian Arab speak. The King Morroco is also made to appear ridiculous.
This "All cultures are equal and deserving of respect" bullshit is just that... bullshit.
Sabrina obviously didn't know what those strange sounds were, or what they could mean. She settled on “yodeling” as the closest word she knew for such vocalization, and said the word in a questioning upspeak
Anyway, it’s racist to disparage Arabic culture, but it’s A-okay to shit on Alpine or Appalachian culture
Child stars have trouble in adult life -- especially child stars from the Disney Channel. She's had an immense amount of work done on her since those days, and not for the better. With a lot of luck and effort, she may not end up like Britney Spears or Lindsay Lohan, but it wouldn't be a surprise if she went down that path.
