"My reaction was pure confusion, sarcasm and not ill intended. Could have handled it better! Now I know what a Zaghrouta is! I welcome all cheers and yodels from here on out."

Here's how it looked and what she said at the time:
ADDED: Notice that she says "I don't like it" when she misreads it as yodeling. Why the hostility to yodeling? But showing disrespect to Arabic culture is another matter. From the NYT article:
Fans appeared divided over Carpenter’s response on social media. One user called it “insensitive and Islamaphobic.” Another wrote: “She’s not obligated to like anything, but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect.”
AND: Does yodeling seem... too country and somehow right wing?

"but after receiving the information that it was part of the person’s culture, the least that is expected is respect."

More childish bullshit. The idea that everyone has to respect every culture and all their practices sounds like someone who is stuck in an 8 year old's mentality of everyone has to be nice.

The Vault Dweller said...

"Could have handled it better!" is very Trumpian. Not the apology aspect, but the phrasing.

What I like about this -- aside from how hot she is -- is how honest she is about her mistake.

She's an apolitical artist, obviously. She either doesn't know about the religious and political optics, or she just doesn't care. She's being honest and straight. She has no fear of Islam (which is good, right?)

But she also has no fear of our PC culture. And she refuses to bow down to that. She is not going to pretend and abash herself and beg for leftist approval. Good for her.

That's an ill phrase; a vile phrase.

Jimmie Rodgers's Blue Yodel #9 was a collaboration with Louis Armstrong, which was a very early example of "game respects game."

Jimmie Rodgers was the first thing I thought about when I saw 'yodel', and specifically, this song (but not this version, I have another).

The first and only time I heard that Islamic yodeling was in the movie, Jewel of the Nile. Not nearly as good as Romancing the Stone, but fun.

"Sufis rule."

In the movie, Sufis were the peace lovers of Islam.

Years later, I was at work, chatting with an Islamic lawyer. Good guy, serious, he would get on his knees and pray five times a day. Anyway, I asked him, "What do you think of Sufis?"

And he went on a passionate anti-Sufi rant. He really did not like those Sufis.

Whatever her reaction was, it wasn’t islamophobic. Carpenter is well known for dry humping on stage, so anyone attending her concert can’t possibly be a strict adherent of any Muslim denomination. The clip didn’t really capture the call itself, but I am assuming it’s the ululation, which is Arab but pre-Islamic. And the ululatrix sounds like a young woman.

So you had an Anglo woman and an Arab one, both aggressively secular, arguing over the aesthetics of a completely non religious vocalization. Where in that do you find Islamophobia? CC, JSM

Its just so insane in the USA and the UK. Its Ok to trash Islam and Arabs but don't you criticize Israel in any way or we'll destroy you. Or even express annoyance at "The jews". (Go talk to ye about that). Imagine if some Orthodox jew had made some noise at her concert and she had the same reaction. LOL.

RCOCEAN II said...

Having said that, I think she was just talking off the cuff and is obviously ignorant of Arab Culture. She's apologized and that's the end of that.

Yodeling is a gay call to resonance in an echo chamber.

Mary Beth said...

I pay for a concert to hear the performer not the audience. Loud vocalization unrelated to the song? No. Loud vocalization during a quiet moment in the music? No.

She shouldn't have apologized. The woman who interrupted everyone else's concert experience should have apologized.

Thanks for the Jimmie Rodgers! Great song. As for the rest of this tempest in a teapot, who cares? It will be forgotten in 15 minutes. Unless you live in Dearborn or the middle east (but I repeat myself), there is no reason to be aware of Arab culture. She should have just completely ignored the kerfuffle.

Ululation is an "auditory control and terrorism" move in that it demands attention above all other social sounds. I always hear it as sustainable and monotonous screaming but without throat damage.

Yodeling attempts to make controlled and melodic music with similar vocal/throat movements. Also consider Asian throat singing and African click languages -- unconventional stuff is possible.

In all cases, is the sound appropriate for the venue or does it interrupt the performer? De facto heckling? De facto selfish attention? Functional stage diving without moving from a seat?

Looking at the video RCO posted of women doing this, I don't think it really sounds like a yodel. It is a bunch of women sticking their tongues out and flapping them around.

I've seen it often enough before in movies and news. It is usually, we are told, an outcry of "Death to the great Satan" or some such. I've never seen it, that I know of, used in a celebratory or joyful manner.

OTOH, if the women were not shouting "death to the great satan" but "We love Justin Bieber" I would have no way of knowing the difference.

I think she was genuinely afraid but tried to keep it lighthearted by pretending she didn't know what she was hearing. Look at her face. Look how she's trapped in an enclosed alcove. I think she feared violence but was afraid to say it, lest she be called Islamophobic... but she was called Islamophobic anyway.

Nobody's thinking of Jimmy Rodgers or Gene Autry or Slim Whitman. Yodeling is too associated with Austria, which is too associated with "The Sound of Music," and everybody was white in the movie.

From Wikipedia: "Carpenter was homeschooled.... She began studying voice at the age of six. Around the age of ten, she began posting videos on YouTube of herself singing Christina Aguilera and Adele songs. Her father built a recording studio for her to fuel her passion for music...."

She's 26 now. Imagine how she feels. She's very successful, but she is vulnerable. Again, look at her face as she hears that triumphant cry in the audience. Did she fear attack?

The great Islamic poet Rumi was a Sufi.

"When we are dead, seek not our tomb in the earth, but find it in the hearts of men."

Rumi died on December 17, 1273 in Konya. His death was mourned by the diverse community of Konya, with local Christians and Jews joining the crowd that converged to bid farewell as his body was carried through the city.

RIP, Rumi, and God bless

I'm with Mary Beth on this one. She looked to be concentrating and the commotion of sound with a language she likely doesn't understand took her out of preparation for her next song. I think she wanted it to stop, so she could focus on her performance.
Having worked years ushering professional musicals while in HS; we were always on the lookout to prevent disruption for the actors on stage and the audience. We didn't want people making noises, flashing lights, exiting out a door that might let in light. I get that Coachella is more of an outdoor, anything goes event, but I suspect the performer still doesn't like being disrupted.

I remember that scene from Patton. Didnt understand at the time that I was being subtly propagandized to dislike arabs.

This is made clear when we see the Arabs scavenging on the Kasserine Pass battlefield. "They stip our dead before we even have time to bury them" says the GI escort to Omar Bradley. Then the GI fires his Thompson in the air, and the primitive Arabs scurry off with their Donkeys.

That we're using their country as a battlefied is never mentioned nor does any Tunisian Arab speak. The King Morroco is also made to appear ridiculous.
