"Trump picks his cabinet in part for their aesthetics, and their ability to perform well on TV and Noem was famed for never missing a photo op...."

"But her hunger for publicity also contributed to her demotion. Under Noem’s watch, $220 million of taxpayers’ money was spent on an advertising campaign for border security that prominently featured footage of her on horseback, dressed as a 'cowgirl,' in front of Mount Rushmore.... In recent months, she has drawn negative headlines for using border funds for a multi-million-dollar jet fleet. There are rumours she is romantically involved with Corey Lewandowski.... He joined midway through the 2024 presidential campaign and quickly butted heads with the official campaign chiefs, Susie Wiles and Chris LaCivita. At an event when the scale of Trump’s victory was becoming clear, Lewandowski tried to congratulate LaCivita only to be told: 'F*** you, f*** you and f*** you. You have f***ed with the wrong person. I’m going to f***ing destroy you.'"

The Times’ editorializing distracts from the reporting. Tossing in rumors of affairs always says “serious reporting” right? However the advertising budget of a quarter billion dollars was idiotic, unnecessarily extravagant and served no purpose. I’m firmly for removing all theatre kids from government and when a Republican reveals herself to be a drama queen primadonna without self-awareness it’s time to go.

rehajm said...

Weren’t those TV commercials mostly telling illegal aliens to self-deport?

…that’s what I thought Dave. They were corny but not inconsistent with other ads that run on the news-style programs. Informing illegals the government will pay you to leave and you’ll be in line to return seemed a good tradeoff for the cost of the ads. I’ll never know but would be curious to learn how much money the ads saved us in support for illegals…

Gossip trash from the Thunderer

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

The point, Dave and Rehajm, is that she could have delivered the self-deport message in simple 15-second clips without filming it on horseback in the hills of Dakota, or in full combat gear brandishing a rifle on the border, etc. Good messages get lost in the process of making the video dramatic and suggest more a campaign for higher office than a Public Service Announcement.

I’m even kinda bummed that she was reassigned to the Doral Western initiative to create a New World NATO for common defense of our hemisphere. My hope is she doesn’t start off this mission with an idea for an ad campaign.

rehajm said...

Maybe Mike but the wasted money argument doesn’t hold water, especially since Trump had scolded me for complaining about the waste Congress is still authorizing. Was the political hit of the firing worth the nitpicking over style? The ads have been running for months and I don’t recall much complaint until this week….

…I still think her ousting was part of a budget deal with the left. The antics are all just cover…

It looks like they are trying to spin this as ‘look at the badness!’. But either way, it’s a win for trump. I really don’t know if she was good at the job - I don’t see that she was bad at it at all - and I suppose the ‘optics’ and the amount of money spent on advertising seems a bit much. But trump fired her.

So the story is, trump hired someone who he thought would be great, she wasn’t great, so she was fired. If the Democrats acted that way, maybe we would have been in a better position.

Since the cabinet secretary is the public face of the department, that seems like a valid criteria. Much better than picking a cabinet to mollify factions of the political party.

In either case, there are other criteria as well. Trump as some outstanding people for his administration.

Noem did seem like she was fond of publicity and enjoyed the perks of her position. Trump should have given her some early feedback to mind her public image.

Bondi has a much more complex problem from Noem's.

At least the lower DHS ranks consist mostly of people who want to do the mission. So for example you unleash Border Patrol to, you know, actually patrol the border, and they do.

The US Attorney's Offices are just full of burrowers. Removing the Biden-appointed US Attorneys on top of each office doesn't help much, especially when there is still friction in the Senate against appointing new ones. There are several types of burrowers. You have people who joined during Biden who are all in on defunding the police and showing suicidal mercy to criminals, and who will do anything and everything to oppose Evil Trump. They aren't even the biggest threat - a lot of them have self-terminated anyway. Possibly a bigger threat are ideologically firm righties, who will not adapt to some of the non-right-wing aspects of Trumpism. And then of course there are just lawyers - people who say "I'm a professional, in my professional opinion we can't do this, and you can't make me do this," for no other reason than inertia or barcardsworthiness.

There are MAGA lawyers out there - Bondi just needs to appoint bunches of them as Special AUSAs. CC, JSM

Mullin isn’t real -- he’s a hapless parody character created by Adam Sandler to see how far he could get in the Trump Administration.

Pam Bondi should be next -- it’s a ‘target rich environment’, could be Hegseth, RFK, Miller, or anyone one the grifting clowns.

Hegseth should be very nervous. When Trump’s “special military operation” drags on and on, when casualties mount, he will be the next to fall. Trump picked both Noem and Hegseth because he thought they looked good on television.

Unsurprisingly, it’s their very ability to preform infinite boot licking and hysterical propaganda television that will lead to their ends. The clown show will be the death of the clowns.

During the campaign, Trump made the point repeatedly that Biden (or "Biden") never fired anybody. This is also the same guy who tried to copyright the words "You're fired!" Therefore, nobody should be surprised by a cabinet-level firing at this point in his term. (It's more surprising it took this long.) And Noem obviously was low-hanging fruit. If you think about her, and think about Trump, Trump actually seems like the normal one.

A possible reason its a big deal.. DHS is currently shut down in the trump War. Lawmakers are concerned about leadership stability especially in a war. DHS oversees counter terrorism ,border security and cyber security all critical during active miltary conflict 100,000 employees are furloughed leaving key security gaps, Mullen(no military backround and a trump whsperer is in the transition while domestic enforcement tactics resulted in death of 2 US citizens in MINN. FEMA instability abd shrinking FEMA weakened nations aility to respond to domestic emergencies and wartime disasters,Hey what could go wrong.Never been a fired HOMELAND SECURITY SECRETARY during WaR, ANOTHER FIRST ,seems like a brain dead decision TO SUB a guy who has no experience and is a guy who will only do what trump tells him to do.WHATS THE BIG DEAL ? As an example of his choices, he picked Whiskey Pete, whose only ability is to follow Trump's orders to the letter after he first blows national security, but after displaying his ability to break the law. ICE Barbie, Pam Bondi, Todd Blanche, and Kashyap Patel are straight-up liars obeying an extremely dangerous Stephen Miller.

Now we get the very stupid MarkWayne Mullen, the dumbest U, S, Senator on the planet, who picks fights with a labor union president on the Senate floor and who knows nothing about immigration and national emergency services, anymore than Noem did. But he loves The Donald. .
