"Standing in an outdoor car park on which he wants to build flats, Carvelli watched as archaeologists got busy unearthing ancient Roman skeletons..."

"... mosaics and tombs. 'We had problems like this before in Rome when we had to work around a tomb but this is on a different level,' Carvelli said. When builders broke ground at the car park last year, archaeologists checked for ancient ruins and stumbled on a large Roman burial ground, complete with 20 tombs and 50 skeletons piled in pits for the poor, a mere six feet below where Romans have been parking their cars for years.... Peering into one hole in the ground full of skeletons, Walter Pantano, an anthropologist, surveyed the tangle of arms, rib cages and grinning skulls with their teeth intact...."

In honor of the great James Taranto, this could use the "Always in the Last Place You Look" headline.

They paved paradise and put up a parking lot.

We need to stop leaving our carcasses lying about. They just get in the way of our descendants. Eventually, every square foot of land will be a grave. Is that what you want? Sooner or later you will become dust. Git-R-Done, and get back in the cycle of life. I want to be turned into fertilizer and spread in the forest, so I can get back to work. You can come visit me and stand under my shade in awe of my continued creations.

I don't think skulls can smile. Smiling is lips and skin and muscles.

That's been going on for decades. It's nearly impossible to dig anywhere without hitting something Roman. Same thing in Mexico City (ancient Tenochtitlan).

What have the Romans ever done for us anyways?

Just think of the dead Romans as "Native Americans" and you'll stop being frustrated over the barriers to building Apartments in Rome.

I don't think they can stop, or they may just be one of those people who laugh at everything. Annoying. No wonder people buried them.

They dont need more apartments in Rome. It has enough people and more than enough tourists. What Italy lacks is babies from Italian women.

I've known archeologists in Ireland who made quite a lot of money (delivered in brown envelopes) to not notice ancient artifacts while preparing for motorway construction.

Think of all the human remains littering the ocean floor, encased in those millions of sunken ships.

Anyone living in a Mediterranean nation knows that every square inch of ground has been fought over for at least the last 2500 years. When I was in Naples last year, I was marveling at the Roman roads, cobblestoned, still being used. Or the Catholic churches from the 1200's, with walls built of re-purposed Roman bricks and the occasional Roman column. You can't find a square foot in any city there that wouldn't arouse the interest of an archaeological team, if they had the resources to dig it up.

lucky thing these weren't 1st Nations people..
or the builders would be F*cked.
But, since these are white people graves, there should be an easy work around

That's a literal drop in the ocean, tcrosse.

Think of all those human remains living on the coastlines near rivermouths from before 25,000 years ago now buried under 100-meters of sea water.

my friend Jen, worked for the state of Wisconsin,
surveying road construction sites to make sure No native american had Ever been there before.
It was good paying work.
IF they found firepits, which happened EVERY MILE, then they just wrote up a report.
but If they found bones.. Then the road plan changed.
If there was a pioneer cementary in the way.. No Problem
They just moved the graves

No parking space is illegal on stolen land. Stand down, meter maids!

Just keep telling yourself that. It'll be okay.
