RIP Augie Meyer, 85.

I watched an old Texas Tornadoes video a couple of weeks ago “Mendocino” (had to be a few decades ago, as Freddie Fender was still alive) and I wondered if Augie was still with us. At that point, he was. I always enjoyed his keyboard work.

It's Spring but only by the calendar; meaning astronomically (Sun crossing the Equator).

In New England Spring only credibly comes in mid-April (even later). Stated in other words, Winter starts in November and leaves in April.

Not as bad as Canada though. They have two seasons - this Winter and Next Winter.

Winter? Not where I am in Idaho. Winter gave us a pass this year, no snow and it barely got below 30°. Roads? I haven't seen much in the way of construction but seeing as how it's over 80° today, it won't surprise me to see it starting up soon.

Is it wrong to refer to today’s sunrise as the first sunrise of spring?

I asked Grok:

Answer:
No, it’s not wrong to refer to today’s sunrise as the first sunrise of spring—it’s poetic, evocative, and commonly understood in casual or symbolic contexts—but it’s not precisely accurate in strict astronomical terms.
The official astronomical start of spring in the Northern Hemisphere is the vernal (or spring) equinox, which today (March 20, 2026) occurs at 10:46 a.m. EDT (that’s 9:46 a.m. CDT in Madison, Wisconsin). This is the precise moment when the Sun’s center crosses the celestial equator, making day and night nearly equal in length worldwide, and marking the transition to spring.
The equinox can happen at any time of day, depending on the year. In 2026, it’s mid-morning, so:
• The sunrise this morning (before the equinox moment) technically still occurred during astronomical winter.
• The first sunrise fully in astronomical spring would be tomorrow’s (March 21), or more precisely, today’s sunrise is the first one after the equinox only if we consider the day as a whole once the equinox has passed.
People often treat the entire equinox date as “the first day of spring,” and many celebrate the equinox sunrise with events (like observances at stone circles or parks) because it’s the sunrise on the day spring officially begins. Phrases like “first sunrise of spring” appear in event names and media around the equinox, treating it symbolically as the dawn of the new season.

YouTube: Ergativity —The Most Confusing Concept in Linguistics?

From the video notes: “In English, "I ran" and "I built a house" use the same grammatical logic. You are the subject, the active doer, in both. But in nearly 25% of the world's languages, that isn't true. In an ergative language, the version of "you" that runs is grammatically identical to the house being built—not the person building it.”

“Ergativity is often cited as the most confusing concept in linguistics, but it doesn't have to be. In this video, Dr. Taylor Jones (PhD, University of Pennsylvania) breaks down the "backwards" logic of Ergative-Absolutive alignment. We’ll move past the "Mystery of the Subject" to see how language evolves, how your brain shifts between systems, and why "the subject" might actually be three children in a trenchcoat.”

Language Jones says if he can “get it”, you can “get it” too. Maybe I “can get it”, I just have to watch it a dozen times. 🤪

We drove the Trans-Canada Highway from Portage LaPrairie to Vancouver a few years ago, with an overnight in Banff. It was glorious, with clearing skies the evening before we stopped, and more blue sky and and puffy clouds for most of the day. It was more than we expected and if we get up there again we'd love to take the train east to west.

It's been known for a while Iran had a long range ballistic missile capability. One missile failed in flight and the US intercepted another.

Instead of projecting strength, this failed attack shows Iran is getting desperate. Also, now they have demonstrated they can reach Europe, they have given further justification to Bibi Trump's war on Iran. This gives Trump an argument that Iran directly threatens our NATO partners in Europe, therefore they should join the fight.

Nuclear is of course the worst threat, but Iran being able to launch ICBMs and IRBMs at various distant targets reinforces Tulsi’s comment that the threat level requiring action is composed of many factors and is determined by the president.

Given the resolution of detail that Israel has acquired in other aspects, I have to believe they/we knew about the progress of their ballistic missile program.

Agreed, Howard. Although Europe has been oblivious to the severe damage they’ve already invited in from Islamic countries. Serialization and Tracking: Starting January 1, 2027, all handgun ammunition sold or possessed in Illinois must be serialized, meaning they will have unique identifiers for tracking purposes.
2
Centralized Database: A centralized database will be created by the Illinois State Police to record ammunition transactions, including purchaser identification and serialized information.
2
Fees: Retailers selling ammunition will be required to register and report transaction details, with a potential fee of up to five cents per round of ammunition sold.
2
Penalties: Possessing non-serialized ammunition in public could result in a Class C misdemeanor, while manufacturing or selling unserialized ammunition could lead to a Class A misdemeanor.
2
Legislative Context: The bill has faced significant opposition from gun rights organizations, raising concerns about its implications for gun owners and the effectiveness of serialization technology.

“In New England Spring only credibly comes in mid-April (even later). Stated in other words, Winter starts in November and leaves in April.”

Temp is 88° now, and predicted to hit 103° today here in PHX. Just came for LVNV yesterday, and it isn’t much better. Luckily, it’s supposed to drop into the high 90s starting tomorrow (97°). Our landscape guy told us that this is cutting our prime planting system short this year. (We have to replace one of the palm trees he planted for us last year). The first 100° day is usually the date we migrate to MT for the summer half the year. We usually head back at the first snow.

It’s a very weird year. Snow in central and northern CO has been record horrible. Skiing has suffered greatly, and the ski resorts are bleeding red ink. Pacific NW (east of the Cascades) was also hit hard this year, while the northern Plains through New England were hit hard.

Bruce Hayden said...

“This legislation aims to enhance the traceability and regulation of handgun ammunition in Illinois."

Definitely a clown show. Last I knew, no one was making the stuff. So, manufacturers are going to have to start making IL conforming ammunition. Possibly doubling its cost. So, you drive to IN or WI to pick unserialized ammo. Whoops, that’s now a Class C misdemeanor. Of course that violates both Interstellar Commerce AND the 2nd Amdt. And, since almost no one is sentenced for Felon in Possession already, it won’t be applied, except against the middle class, who already don’t misuse their guns. Thus making Chicago even more dangerous. Likely, a feature, not bug.

Oh, and it’s a waste of time and money anyway. Canada tried to implement a gun registry database, and it was a massive failure. Didn’t solve a single crime, wasted millions, and was never fully implemented.

It’s, of course, in the big cities, that Dems control, that they can pile up their illegal votes. But with the SAFE Act, Harmeet K. In common American speech, we say "the first day of spring." It's not a technical term. "Equinox" is a technical term. It would technically wrong to say this was the first sunrise after the equinox, but I never said that. I was operating within culture that speaks of the first day of spring, and this was the first day of spring. To call the next sunrise the first sunrise of spring would confuse people into thinking that was the first day of spring, which it wasn't.
