"I am pleased to report that the United States of America, and the country of Iran, have had, over the last two days, very good and productive conversations..."

"... regarding a complete and total resolution of our hostilities in the Middle East. Based on the tenor and tone of these in-depth, detailed, and constructive conversations, which will continue throughout the week, I have instructed the Department of War to postpone any and all military strikes against Iranian power plants and energy infrastructure for a five-day period, subject to the success of the ongoing meetings and discussions. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"

Writes President Donald J. Trump at Truth Social. He's got it in all caps. He's shouting it from the rooftop, I guess. That doesn't make it true, but I hope it's true.

UPDATE: "Oil Prices Tumble and Stocks Rise as Trump Backs Off Threats to Iran Infrastructure" (NYT)("Despite Tehran responding to Mr. Trump by saying that no such talks were taking place, the gains in stocks and drop in oil mostly held").

Someone asked me how I could oppose this war when my own mother’s country was liberated by American military, as if it were the same thing. The Iranians had overthrown a foreign installed dictator, and we are trying to take it back and install a Quisling, Holland had been invaded by a foreign power.

You don't negotiate an unconditional surrender. The last time we imposed an unconditional surrender on anyone it took an occupation force of over 3 million men (ours and our allies). We didn't even demand an unconditional surrender of Japan (granted, it was pretty close).

Besides the Gerald R Ford is undergoing emergency repairs in Crete (after a fire in the laundry room and plumbing issues) and will probably end up needed significant repairs back in Norfolk, as it has been at sea for almost a year now.

You claimed the Trump Admin hasn't negotiated in good faith.

That's not "Trump dealing with contractors"

And he has abrogated practically every trade treaty the U.S. has signed.

Trump dumping actions by a previous Admin is not "Trump Admin negotiating in bad faith"

His tariffs change practically every day.
So name a specific Trump Admin negotiated tariff where there was an agreement with another country that Trump then unilaterally reneged.
Or negotiations where Trump offered X, the other side accepted, and then he said "no, actually I want Y".

Is the problem just that you're so stupid that you don't even know what "negotiated in bad faith" means?

Let me give you an example: 1986 Immigration deal: One time only amnesty for illegals in the US, in exchange for immigration laws being enforced in the future. The Open Borders crowd got their amnesty, then immediately went to court to get the enforcement sabotaged.

Now, do you have any real examples? Or just TDS whining?

Maybe some people ought to consider that they don't really have a clear grasp on everything that is going on.

Does that include you and the people at Coffee and Covid. I find it hard to credit a site that in a supposedly serious article about the war includes screenshots of Carrie Fisher in The Blues Brothers Movie

There is no plan?
Or there is a detailed plan, prepared by competent warriors, that is (a) not revealed to the public, because letting the IRGC know what’s about to hit them would be stoooopid, and (b) undoubtedly includes branching sub-plans to deal flexibly with chance events (good and bad) and the reactions of enemy forces, their noncombatant allies (Russia, China, and others), our allies, real and virtual, and interested neutrals.
It’s astonishing, and shameful, that I have to explain something so obvious to any person of normal intelligence.

The only specific name I saw was a finish carpenter that did a bunch of cabinetry in one of the NJ casinos, Trump said the work was shoddy and took some money off the bill. Pretty much standard when working with any contractor to wind up arguing whether the work meets spec and if not, how much to take off... The contractor was so offended that 2 months later he took on another job for Trump.

Baristas and Amazon delivery drivers and welfare leeches who have never signed the front of a paycheck in their lives are filled with contempt for "failed businessman" Trump who "stiffs his contractors".

These stupid people disregard his 500 other successful enterprises and the realities of hardball real estate development dealings with dishonest and incompetent subcontractors. I'd like these stupid people to find me another developer who's put up dozen of buildings in Manhattan and never withheld payment from a sub for shitty or incomplete work. Hell, I've built 2 houses and had to withhold a couple payments on both and dare them to sue me, just to get the work done to spec.

Some of these stupid people comment here. We laugh at their ignorance.

Did you think that Daniel Ortega was more problematic than Ronald Regan? Did you think that the Vietnamese treatment of their POW's was more abusive than our treatment of detainees in Gitmo?

So your standard is "as long as we are less abusive than the commies, we are good." And of course, shouldn't our proxies be held to the same standards. Are you saying that as long as Marcos or Pinochet did it, no problem?

Most of them are of subnormal intelligence, and those that aren't are the kind of political ideologues who would shriek "Trump can't swim!" if he walked on water like Jesus.

Freder Frederson said...

Lots of assumptions in that short phrase. If there is a detailed plan, why isn't there a clear goal for what we are seeking in this war. Do you know what it is? I sure don't.

Apparently, Trump didn't think past "we'll kill a few Mullahs and the people will rise up and create heaven in Iran".

Once again, the fact that Trump hasn’t told you his goal doesn’t mean he doesn’t have one. It means that revealing it to every clown with a web connection - and everyone we’re fighting against - would make it much more difficult to achieve. This is pretty much a corollary to the argument in my previous comment, which means that any person of normal intelligence would have figured it out himself and realized that asking the question you just asked would make him look stupid.

Or maybe he was tweeting at that time because the tweet was directed at whoever is currently running Iran, and Tehran is 8:30 ahead of the east coast of the United States.

It might be history’s fastest flip-flop. On Tuesday, March 17th, French President Macron vowed, “France will never take part in operations to open or liberate the Strait of Hormuz.” Two days later, on Thursday, France signed a joint statement expressing “readiness to contribute to appropriate efforts to ensure safe passage through the Strait.” Womp, womp. The Wall Street Journal reported, “22 Countries Signal Readiness to Help Secure Strait of Hormuz.”

image 2.png

Between Monday and when the statement was signed on Thursday, trad-media ran scores of breathless stories about European and Asian countries “standing up to Trump.” For three days, foreign leaders competed to defy the American president using the strongest possible language, and media wrote glowing elegies to each and every statement of defiance as they rolled off the tickers. NBC:

image 3.png
Reuters, Tuesday:

image 4.png
Ha. “Never” only lasted two days. By Thursday, Reuters published a short, stenographic piece with this bland headline (Note how the headline didn’t include the words “reversal” or “back-tracked” or “Trump Always Wins”):

image 5.png
Indeed, neither the Reuters article about the joint statement —or any of the other minimal coverage— quoted the leaders’ previous statements of defiance, even though you’d think those would provide both engagement value and needed context.

The New York Times ran a front-page headline about the refusal— but not even one dedicated piece on the reversal (it was lumped into a “live blog”). NBC ran two separate stories and a TODAY Show segment on the rebuke— but nothing standalone on the 22 countries signing up. The Guardian published an editorial and an opinion column urging Europe to resist— then barely noticed when Europe stopped resisting.

image 12.png

Not even one of the articles I reviewed mentioned German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’s quip, “This is not our war.” Not one article mentioned Macron’s “never.” Not one article framed it as a reversal. No reporter asked, “Herr Pistorius, last Monday you said this is not our war. By Friday, your government signed a statement expressing readiness to secure the strait. What changed?” Conveniently for the plot, they suddenly got amnesia.

themselves” story would have undermined it. So the first got the spotlight, and the other got the wire service treatment.

The truth they didn’t want to report was that Trump’s pressure worked. And it worked fast. It was classic: He made them an offer , add the Middle East peace deal to the long list of preparations for this point.

Haha, this reversal wildly complicates things for the American-campus pro-Palestine folks. The Free Palestine movement just lost its primary supplier of moral authority: Palestine. Whoopsies.

I don't remember hearing anything from the MSM other than "Trump stiffed contractors". It's a lot like The Epstein Files™, If there was really anything to it (read: if the truth of the situation would make Trump look bad), the details would have been made public long ago.

US to pay $1bn to switch from wind to oil and gas development ~ The Guardian
'Trump administration announces deal with TotalEnergies to redirect investment in wind to oil and gas instead'

"The Trump administration has agreed to pay TotalEnergies almost $1bn to pull out of offshore wind in the US and invest instead in oil and gas production, as it tries to boost supplies of fossil fuels."

For God's sake Feder, Trump told us before he was elected the first time he wasn't going to let his enemies know what his plans were. But it's not just Feder. The constant questions by the press show they think they should be in the inner circle. Morons.

Can things go in unexpected directions? Of course they can. Tactics have to be adjustable.

Trump has been very clear about his goal. VERY CLEAR! Iran will not be allowed to have nukes while he is President!! Under no circumstances. He's said this is his goal about 1,000 times now. He's also said he would LIKE to see the regime change, but never that that was necessary to achieve his goal. Obviously he wants Iran's proxies eliminated or boxed in, but I've never heard that stated a the end goal.

Personally I think to achieve no nukes you need regime change, but that's due to the chance you get another Obama back in power. Yeah would be on you.
