"Holy f---, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f---ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?"

So wrote Graham Platner, the man who's leading in the polls to become the Democratic Party candidate to run against Susan Collins for the Senate seat for Maine.

I'm reading "Janet Mills and Graham Platner battle for female voters in Maine's key Senate race" (NBC News).
Platner’s online Reddit posts, which resurfaced last fall, included a slew of controversial comments, including calling himself a communist; saying white, rural Americans were racist and stupid; and writing that “all” police officers are “bastards” after a Minneapolis police officer killed George Floyd in 2020.

In posts first reported by The Washington Post, Platner responded to a Reddit commenter who wrote, “There’s always that story about the girl who gets raped because she drank too much and somebody took advantage of that.”

Platner responded, “Holy f---, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f---ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to? Men and women, you make a choice to consume enough of a substance to lose your self control. So if you don’t want to be in a compromising situation, act like an adult for f---s sake.”

Here's Mills's ad exploiting Platner's dumb social media, an ad that will obviously be helpful to Collins if Mills doesn't get the nomination:

Not obvious to me. Those prim bluenoses are quite the self-righteous turnoffs. Go back to your knitting, you never had this problem and never will. Most things I read about Platner are bizarre, but this is one that makes perfect sense and no amount of fembot scolding can take that away. Tsk, tsk, tskarooni. The days when this simpering disapproval could work are over.

The right to be completely irresponsible, change your mind after the event, blame the Other? The right to be nothing but children? If in a college, the right to start a process utterly one-sided and highly likely to ruin the man's educational and employment potential? Hmm, quite a version of women"s rights you are espousing there, Professor.

In order to be a proper analogy, the "victim" needs to actually say it's okay and - perhaps more importantly - they both take each other's credit cards (and are probably both drunk).

Whether it's "OK" or not is debatable, but neither one committed a crime.

He responded, “Holy f---, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f---ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?”
I interpret that answer as meaning if you get drunk and you’re raped - then it’s not rape-rape, take some responsibility and shut up. Nothing in the question or answer refers to consenting to sex.

bagoh20 said...

Let's keep it real here. People almost never "consent" to sex. They just don't stop it for lots of reasons, the main ones being that they want it, or what comes with it. Consent is almost never requested either, because it's simply inappropriate. Nobody wants to request it and women in particular don't want their partner to request it, at least not verbally. Like with many things, they prefer you just magically know what they want.

bagoh20 said...

"Which woman is responsible or not responsible for their actions?"

It will be argued in court that neither of them is responsible and in both cases it will have good change of being successful.

If they were men, neither would even be attempted, let alone work.

Back in the heyday of Bill Ayers in the 60's and 70's, the Weathermen, Black Panthers, SLA, and other radical communist groups were surrounded by starry-eyed young coed groupies, dazzled by the attraction of "radical chic". These girls were routinely used as disposable sperm receptacles when willing, and often raped and otherwise physically abused if not.

There are some real sexual predators who think themselves insulated from charges of sexism by their devotion to abortion on demand and other far-left politics.

Platner responded to a Reddit commenter who wrote, “There’s always that story about the girl who gets raped because she drank too much and somebody took advantage of that.”
Assuming the commenter knew what his/her words meant, someone raped the girl while she was drunk.
Platner responded:
“Holy f---, how about people just take some responsibility for themselves and not get so f---ed up they wind up having sex with someone they don’t mean to?”
That implies that if the girl got drunk, she should accept responsibility for getting raped.

Eva Marie said...“There’s always that story about the girl who gets raped because she drank too much and somebody took advantage of that."

You're using the normal person's definition of rape; that's not the definition education, government or the media uses. When I read this, due to my past experience with how the word "rape" is used, what this sentence says is a woman got drunk and had sex and the next morning wished she hadn't.

Maybe it's worse than that, maybe it isn't, but there's nothing in that sentence to indicate she was raped by any normal definition of the word.

When we ridicule Whoopi Goldberg's "rape-rape" comment, it was not because we think there are no false or exaggerated accusations of rape, it's because she was defending a predator who roofied a 14 year old girl in order to have his way with her while she was passed out.

The "nuts and sluts" defense against rape remains evergreen because it's often quite plausible. Some women are indeed nutty. Some women are indeed slutty.

Some women are also sneaky and predatory. This follows from ancient Roman poison shops, Lucrezia Borgia, North Korea's Kim Jo Yong (Great Leader Kim's ruthless sister) and much more. Women may rarely use force to manipulate others, but they do lie, they do many predatory things, and they can rely on sympathy and fluttering eyelashes to escape punishment.

Beyond irresponsible drinking, the "it wasn't rape-rape" attitude persists for these reasons.

Seriously: how much trouble, grief, pain, anguish, and perhaps your life would people save if they just didn't get drunk and kept their pants on? Don't go sleep with random people; stay faithful to your spouse... good old fashioned "morality" that the left hates. Turns out, all those old commandments from the Old Testament work the vast majority of the time to prevent heartache! Don't screw the monkey, you aren't going to die horribly from some weird disease that crosses over.

It's not rocket science here! Girls, yes, it's your fault if you go get passed out drunk and you end up expecting, or catch something. It's also the guy's fault. Guys, don't go out with girls you aren't married to, and you won't be falsely accused! Just.... be moral and avoid all of these problems.

I want Ann to explain how his comments were dumb.

White women in the United States have been on the decline on a variety of levels. They demand the right to act like idiots and not take responsibility for anything.

Freedom and responsibility go hand in hand. Most women are too stupid to figure this out it seems.

Universal suffrage is a death sentence for democracy. People who cannot take responsibility for their actions cannot be allowed to vote.

Northern Maine voted for Trump. So did the easternmost coastal county. It's the seacoast that votes Democratic. The state divides its electoral vote -- 2 for carrying the state, and 1 for carrying each congressional district. Trump has carried the 2nd CD (which is most of the state) every time, while losing the state and the 1st CD (Portland and the southeast) every time.

Janet Mills turns 80 next year. One wonders why she's running for senator. Hasn't she lived enough and enjoyed power long enough? Does she think she has more to give than a younger person -- even Plattner -- would? Such questions are moot. Her grandfather, father, and brother were all in politics (and all Republicans). I doubt she ever considered not running.

The problem here is that there is no way to accurately determine if the man raped her or if she consented then changed her mind later and decided to charge him with rape.

I would personally try to get the woman home safe with family. But there are other men that wont and they may be just as drunk as her.

If a man is drunk does he also get to claim abuse? You know that will never happen. Men are expected to be responsible for themselves.

You don't get to get drunk and pass out and charge everyone at the party with rape. If everyone in society acts like this we will be living in caves.

You can't have people acting irresponsibly and have a free high trust society. Freedom and irresponsibility are anathema in the long term.
