Senator Elissa Slotkin, last night on Bill Maher's show, said that what people want is "more alpha energy."

"You're not going to get me to defend Democratic messaging. That's not going to be ever something that I'm going to defend. That's part of the problem and why we lost the last election. We can have a whole autopsy about that. I think, for me, what is important, going forward, whether you're a Democrat or Republican, is like: the American people, they're telling us something, they want something different out of their government. They want, they want some alpha energy from their leaders. And they certainly — whether you agree with him or not — are getting that from some of the Republicans. And my plea to my own party is, like, can we have a little bit more alpha energy? Punch and believe in what we believe in. Show people that we give a shit, and be simple about addressing the needs that they care about the most. And that has been a struggle to be a part of that change."

That came at the end of her interview with Maher and felt prepared and tacked on. There was no time left to explore the term "alpha energy," which just felt ridiculous. Was she saying Democrats need to talk and act more like Trump because they need to get elected and the voters are pretty damned stupid and self-interested?

You often talk about the need for Democrats to bring back “alpha energy,” along the lines of Michigan sports coaches. What is something Democrats do that is the opposite of alpha energy?

In the Midwest, alpha energy is about emotion. Whether you’re a coach and you know what your team has put into the game, or you’re frustrated that they didn’t give it their all, you’re not speaking from wonky details. You’re speaking about your gut and your emotion. I think Democrats have lost that.

We respond to people’s pain with a long list of wonky policies.

Alpha energy is synonymous with being bold. Call the tough play, take a risk, be bold. And don’t be so damn scared of your own shadow.

Yeah, my first guess was right: She's saying Democrats need to talk and act more like Trump because they need to get elected.

Did she answer the question "What is something Democrats do that is the opposite of alpha energy?" Only vaguely. They're "speaking from wonky details" and not "speaking about your gut and your emotion." Her statement of the problem is, ironically, lacking in the quality she's saying they need.

And what is that quality again? And frankly, I think the idea is based on gender stereotypes but mixes up the male and the female up so we're served an unwholesome stew.

What has Lisa Slotkin ever done that helped the American people? She voted in favor of long TSA lines. STFU.

She just doesn't get it. They've been trying to promote ruinous policies to game our elections, move us by stealth to socialism, and as a corollary, disrupt traditional norms. It's not about the messaging. It's the subtext, the core of what they mean despite their protestations, and their sneaky way of hiding it.

The (D) Party needs more guys like John Fetterman. But they're doing their best to primary him, so...

She said "long list of wonky" details. Does she mean the past 9 years of TDS?

She also said "long list of policies". This, I have not seen.
The only policy I know of is "swinging dicks" in women's locker rooms.

But to her credit, neither details nor policies are action.
Yet, "energy" is not action either.

Exactly. She should role model it, not complain others are not doing so.

I agree with others here. The issue is their policies, not their messaging acumen.

Republicans don't need to worry about this, not one little tiny bit. Oh no. Certainly not. In fact one of the easiest ways to tell if you are right or wrong about something is your certainty. If you can't imagine that you can possibly be wrong, then you are onto the truth, full square. World events are no more complicated than a 1960s era lawnmower engine.

"Unwholesome stew" pretty much describes all of politics from both sides, but people love a good food fight, even when the food itself is not fit to eat, apparently.

Whether you’re a coach and you know what your team has put into the game, or you’re frustrated that they didn’t give it their all, you’re not speaking from wonky details.

The thing with the coach/team metaphor is that Republicans see US citizens as their team and illegal immigrants as the opposing team. Democrats think they are the same team and Republican voters are the opposing team. Their problem isn't one of poor messaging, it's that too many voters have been understanding the message.

Christopher B said...

Crimso, that's the way I remember it, too. Slotkin seems to be misinformed. As a number of people have noted, it ain't the messaging, it's the policies.

What’s really stupid about this is that they don’t even know that the choral group is full of Trump supporters. The idiots just assumed everybody agreed with them. You cannot get thru this idiot shield. So, now, everybody is being outed by their tribe, everybody’s pissed, and I don’t know if we’re going to make it to the concert. It seems impossible for Dems to believe that people really disagree with, and often hate, their policies.

What is the Democrat plan for anything? What will they actually do beyond that passing around money thing? If people think that our problems are a lack of money being spread around, then vote Dem, because they will do that, probably not for you, but that's YOUR problem.

She can complain about "wonky details," but the problem is that the wonkery has become a sham. The "Inflation Reduction Act" did nothing to reduce inflation. The label was pasted on the "New Green Deal" programs that weren't doing the country any good, but provided massive funding to donors. "Comprehensive immigration reform" avoids doing anything about illegal border crossings but adds millions of new Democrat voters. "High Speed Rail" sounds great, but billions are spent without any track being laid. 50 years ago I went to a candidates' forum where everyone was talking about the government "investing" in the country with new projects and programs. It seemed new and fresh and useful then. Now we know it's largely a sham.

Democrats don't have a really charismatic and inspiring leader or a message that moves and uplifts. The usual Democrat path to victory goes through building up their figureheads to be charismatic leaders (whether they really were that great at all): Wilson, Roosevelt, Kennedy, Clinton, Obama.
