Donald Trump extends Iran talks deadline after sell-off on Wall Street ~ FT

The stock, bond and crude oil markets spooked him. That's all there is to it.

IMO, the imminent nature of the potential attack weighed on the market. So Trump tries to take off the immediate market pressure while the military preps the operation. Then he can claim the Iranians somehow "violated" the fake negotiations as a pretext to go in before the new deadline. The problem, of course, is he's like the boy who cried wolf, and the market isn't taking him at face value any more.

HOLY CR*P 🚨 Minnesota Rep Krista Knudsen says they just found out the state TURNED OFF tracking for money being sent overseas.

They turned it on for 2 weeks. Saw all the money leaving, and Democrats quickly SHUT OFF TRACKING to allow it to keep happening.

READ THAT AGAIN

“Today in the fraud committee, the Department of Human Services testified that they haven't been tracking the IP addresses of money that's being literally flown out of our state and where it's going.

They did turn on that reporting for 2 weeks, and they found that yes, a lot of those IP addresses were tied to overseas computers, and then they quickly shut it off after just 2 weeks of seeing where this money is actually going”

“Every time we turn around, it's just more and more fraud scandals in our state”

I was corrected yesterday- sort of, but not really. There's attention to detail- and attention to detail, and they're not the same thing. As pointed out to me,, you can take below 83 IQ people and set them to do a simple repetitive task, over and over again, hour after hour, and they'll happily continue to do so, especially if you're paying them. In today's world you'll only hire them to do that if it's cheaper then automating the task... And normal intelligence people if they see any other option will quit within a week. And if they do take on the job will make many more errors. But it definitely is attention to detail. I recall a similar task that used to be trained for- I don't know if it still is anywhere- boiler checkman. If the automatic level control valve on a boiler failed- someone would be assigned to man a valve and stare at the boiler sightglass. Turning it one way of the level went up, the other way if it went down. It was both physically and mentally exhausting. So much so that the maximum amount of time assigned to the task was 2 hours- and that time limit was emphasized in both supervisor and worker training.

That's a totally different kind of attention to detail then knowing if the specs say use a silicon O-ring, not Viton or the buna-N in the average O-ring kit- it means- USE A SILICON O-RING. There's a reason it was specified.

Had a flexible gear type coupling fail once. I was assigned to investigate and repair. There were two basic types of grease used on most everything- red or brown. (there's also blue grease for a few things) Took the cover off, and all the gear teeth were floating around in the brown grease. The maintenance instructions specified the red grease. (by mil-spec, not red or brown). There were repercussions about that. Not paying attention to detail caused what could have been a major problem- if the failure occurred a few weeks later.

So even if you have people who should know better, sometimes they screw up. If you try to fill the jobs with people who don't know better, well, bad things happen more often. Attention to detail would have prevented that failure. If someone screws up that kind of thing once, it hopefully becomes an object lesson. A second time means they need to be removed from their job.

The credentialed class is really down on Markwayne Mullin. And beginning to get under the skin of the non-credentialed class, especially the successful members of that class.

My grandfather and his 3 brothers who survived to adulthood all tan away from home at age 16. Apparently great-grandfather wasn't a really nice guy... All went to sea- something that could be done by 16 year olds at the time. By the time the WWI expansion of the USN was happening they were all Chief or first engineers aboard merchant vessels. All 4 were drafted AND commissioned as Navy officers and assigned as Chief Engineers aboard Navy ships. Without even a HS diploma. As were many others from the merchant marine to fill officer roles in both deck and engineering departments alongside USNA grads and other college graduates. Weapons department, OTOH, was staffed by college grads who went through a training pipeline to get there.

And it's pointed out- AOC graduated with honors! And what has she accomplished? Well, nothing besides being elected to office. That degree with honors apparently qualified her to be a bartender and nothing more. Markwayne Mullin took over a small company, turned it into a much larger company, employed people, and had real accomplishments. Actually, sort of similar to Trump who did have a bachelors degree in Economics and took a big company and made it even bigger. And the Trump organization which he heads consists of over 500 companies, and along the way he's had a whopping total of 4 Chapter 11 bankruptcies.

There is no one else in the Congress or the Senate with either Markwayne's or Donald's record of business world success. There are a few high ranking military officers- who achieved success in navigating a bureaucracy, which is not even close to the same thing.

A different kind of success is those who survived medical training to become physicians. 20 of them in congress and the senate altogether, 14 D, 6 R. Surprised, aren't you? The 4 in the Senate are all R. https://patientsactionnetwork.com/physicians-119th-congress

So I do a round-trip to Seattle this morning to do some errands and stock up on Good Husband Points. Just in case they might be needed at a later date.

As I’m driving the USB connector in the car’s dash bites the dust, so I am half-listening to Nostalgia Radio, DJ’ed by Martha Quinn. Forty years later she is still quite perky, it seems.

Somewhere after an Ace of Base song comes a public-health ad from the Washington State Government: Washington State Government wants you to be healthy. And for you Nostalgia Radio Martha Quinn fans to be healthy, that means they want to give you some tips for using fentanyl.

Tip One: try not to be alone when taking your fentanyl. Because when you OD there is then someone there who could call for help, before emptying your pockets and leaving you unconscious by the dumpster behind the Panda Express.

Tip Two: make sure you leave access for people to get to you in case you need assistance. So I guess don’t blockade yourself with 50-gallon barrels of used cooking-oil behind that Panda Express dumpster.

Tip Three: and this is a direct quote: “go low and slow.”

I heard the ad THREE times in my back-and-forth from Seattle.

So it’s gonna be OK, you Nostalgia Radio Martha Quinn fans — try out some fentanyl: Washington State has your back.

I'm now patiently waiting on the Washington State Government Public Health Radio Announcements on how to be a better pimp.

I mean: I know the basics, but...

I am Laslo.

Speaking to Gospace's first comment, when I was a kid, 65 years ago, my father told me about a Swiss watchmaker who, in an effort to increase productivity and reduce mistakes, hired only high IQ individuals for the assembly line. Things quickly went to hell as the assembly line workers got bored, screwed up and turnover really ticked up. So they tried the other direction and replaced the smart assembly line workers with below average IQ employees, and quality, productivity and worker satisfaction quickly turned around.

The exact same election rules that were in place when Republicans won the presidency, the House, and the Senate in 2024 are now suddenly deemed insufficient.

According to critics, Republicans can no longer win future elections without the SAVE Act—because, they claim, widespread cheating has become the norm.

The timeline they point to is:
2016: Trump wins — no significant cheating alleged.
2020: Trump loses — massive voter fraud claimed, despite no changes to voting rules.
2024: Trump wins — completely fair elections, with no changes to voting rules.

Yet now, without the SAVE Act, the midterms (and future elections) will supposedly be plagued by massive fraud.

Regarding stock market volatility:

1. This is a discount period if you are a long-term investor. Look 3-5 years into the future, and keep your short-term spending money in a savings account (be very careful with bonds; they have the risks of stocks with the return of savings accounts).

2. This period is confirming a general rotation out of technology stocks -- I'd be trimming the Mag 7 if that's all one owns.

3. Volatility during tense political and economic periods is routine and expected. While the long-term investors tend to ignore it, the short-term traders love to push it up and then push it down. During the bottom of the 2008-2009 meltdown, stocks went up 1,000, down 1,000, and again and again. The traders win through both short sales and gains. Feel free to ignore that crowd. It's just noise for a long term investor.

4. Insider trading -- Let's get Pelosi and her super genius husband on a leash. Maybe claw back all those ill-gotten gains. Maybe claw back her vault of luxury ice cream -- It's surely worth millions! Power corrupts. It corrupts and transforms most everyone in D.C. after 5 or 10 years.

People like Krasner and Jabba the Pritzker threatening to lock up feds don't really care about a few shot Karens.

They care very deeply about their election fraud getting disrupted.

So they are trying to scare feds away from any sort of election supervision (completely legal under the Reconstruction Amendments, VRA, and other law) Trump might be planning for the fall.

Even if the election supervision works and Dems can't print up enough blue-city ballots to put their people in governors' mansions and Senate seats, the Dems do win their blue cities honestly. At least in terms of D vs R - D primaries are another story.

So there will be Dem mayors, police chiefs, sheriffs, and county prosecutors available in 2027 and 2029 to try to prosecute Trump's minions for 'election interference.'

And of course if Jabba and co can spread panic, leading Karens to run over feds at the polling places and get shot, double bubble. CC, JSM

Suspicious high-volume trades before major Trump announcements have been a disturbing pattern during the Trump administration.

Monday was no different as nearly half a billion dollars in oil futures trading occurred irregularly just 15 minutes before Trump’s comments pointing to de-escalation in Iran.

Traders placed $580mn in oil bets ahead of Donald Trump’s social media post on Iran talks ~ FT

Mainstream media catches on that Trump is timing Iran announcements along stock market’s rhythm.

“I think there are a lot of things that raise eyebrows here about the way the president’s announcing these [decisions] and what the market reaction might be,” Bloomberg correspondent David Gura said in an MS Now (rebranded MSNBC) segment, pointing to FT reporting about “sizable” oil trades done before the president’s Monday morning reversal of threats to attack Iran’s biggest power plant.“

Trump and his cronies profiting from generating chaos in the Middle East? Who would’ve thunk it?

I bet when cholera is widespread in Iran due to Trump's bombing campaign of their entire electrical infrastructure, they will give us their oil then; they will be begging for help then! Begging us to stop the bombing!

That’s true. But it doesn’t make him evil or a Jew hater or an antisemite.
It reminds me of the racist/sexist accusations.
“If you have X opinion, then you might not even realize it but deep down you are a racist or a sexist and therefore all your opinions are invalid and I can feel free to denounce you.”
Refute the argument, not the person.

Bloomberg -- Ran as a Democrat for President in 2020; aggressively funded anti-Trump efforts behind the scenes

MSNBC - Funded by lefty Bill Gates and home to the crazy loon Rachel Maddow and her conspiracy theories

FT is a center source and perfectly fine when read in context. Not when filtered through propagandists.

Trump’s recent attempts to calm the markets by making up claims about peace talks remind me of King Canute trying to stop the tide….

It takes a special kind of talent to crash the stock market twice in a 12-month period.

L.E. just assumes that Trump or one of his family members is making money with inside information. Why not someone further down the chain of command, someone with a more urgent need for money? This morning I read on Twitter that a major in the Israeli Defense Forces was arrested for using inside information on upcoming strikes to make sure-fire bets on Polymarket. Commenters seem to think he'll be lucky to get out of jail in less than 20 years.

Has imTay inWay ermontVay (the man who put the Pig in Pig Latin) ever heard of graphite bombs? Because I read the more intelligent and well-informed Twitterers like (e.g.) Trent Telenko, I know that the U.S. has weapons that can completely shut down power lines in Iran (or anywhere else) for 24 hours or so without doing permanent damage to them or the power plants. Doing so on a moonless night would give our special forces and their Israeli and Iranian (and maybe GCC) allies, with their night-vision goggles, a huge advantage over the IRGC and Basijis, helping put an end to the continuing slaughter of peacefully-protesting teenagers, without any danger of producing a cholera epidemic.

I note that igPay inWay ermontVay provides no link to his claim (7:07am) that we're bombing garbage trucks and parking lots and laying mines in villages. I've heard of the last, but note that the mines being laid are anti-tank mines, which are designed to go off only when something as heavy as a tank rolls over them. They are no danger to civilians, even in cars, though I suppose a moving van loaded with books or a truck loaded with cinder blocks might set one off. I say "might" because I believe modern tanks are a lot heavier even than fully-loaded trucks.

“Advances in hypersonic missiles and drones have changed the calculus.”

Drones, maybe. Small drones have exploded in use in the last year or so. Esp in Ukraine. But they don’t do much good against the US Navy. And the US and Israel do pretty well against them with terrestrial military targets.

Hypersonic missiles are the new Chinese and Iranian Wonder Weapon. But ask yourself why the US hasn’t pursued them? We have been doing Mach 5 SCRAMjet research for decades now. It’s easy to make hypersonic missiles go fast. It’s much harder making them useful.

The first problem is maneuverability. The supersonic SR-71 had a turning radius of over 100 miles. That was primarily due to its control surfaces. It at least had (short stubby) wings. Missiles don’t even have those. Just little tail fins. The faster you are going, the more control surfaces you need to turn it. But large control surfaces heat faster, and slow the aircraft down. Most of the journey of a hypersonic missile is spent ballistic.

Then there is the problem communications problem. Because of the plasma created by hypersonic flight, hypersonic missiles cannot communicate while hypersonic. They can’t receive orders to change course (which they really can’t do anyway) while hypersonic. Nor can they see where they are going. Meanwhile, they are visible to the naked eye, due to the heated atmosphere around them. Which means that whatever maneuvering they are going to do has to wait until they go supersonic, if not subsonic.

Meanwhile, we see them at launch, both from special purpose AWACS type aircraft (which are always the first launched and last recovered by our carriers) and by satellites. They can’t be missed. So, we know where they are going. And our carriers can turn on a dime, and power away in another direction at 35 knots. Meanwhile the carrier battle group has hundreds of supersonic anti air missiles that can be shot at where the hypersonic missile will drop to maneuvering speed. And, of course, the carrier’s aircraft can be vectored into their flight path. Etc.

It turns out that subsonic cruise missiles, wave hopping to hide in the radar clutter, are probably a better way to take out carriers, and other mainline naval vessels.

But make no mistake. We were at the forefront of hypersonic research. We just chose to not go that route, because they were not deemed that effective against our naval assets.

Secretary Hegseth has spoken in dire terms about the threat of China's HGV's to US warships.

https://taskandpurpose.com/news/navy-china-hypersonic-missiles/

The US is pursuing hypersonic missiles.

"The United States is currently developing three hypersonic weapons programs: the Navy’s Conventional Prompt Strike (CPS), the Army’s Long-Range Hypersonic Weapon (LRHW), and the Air Force’s Hypersonic Attack Cruise Missile (HACM)."
https://dsm.forecastinternational.com/2025/12/22/an-overview-of-current-u-s-hypersonic-missile-developments/

"After many decades of conducting basic research, the Department of Defense (DoD) recently increased its spending to develop technology for hypersonic weapons. The Air Force, Army, and Navy all plan to field hypersonic missiles within the next few years."

With regard to drone proliferation, drones don't have to be a threat only to ships to change the game. The significance of drones is their low cost and high numbers. They can be used to attack both civilian and military targets all over the region and can allow the Iranians to overwhelm a layered missile defense with sheer numbers, especially if the US Navy component of the layered defense is held off by 1500 miles to stay out of range of HGV's.

The faster you are going, the more control surfaces you need to turn it.

Not necessarily. The Orion launch abort rocket uses small valves on the side of the rocket to release exhaust pressure to steer the rocket. Still, you can only alter the vector so much without exceeding the center of gravity and tumbling.

It's the inlet angle too. Too sharp of a turn can interrupt the flow of air through the turbine and cause a flame out.

I don't think Tim is really concerned about Iranian civilians. He just wants to cast Trump in the worst possible light.
