Has there ever been a worse impersonation on "SNL" than Pete Davidson's complete failure even to attempt to seem the slightest bit like Tom Homan?

Look:

I guess they just hoped the audience didn't know Homan, but if you've ever seen him talk, you know he has an especially funny way of talking. What a treat for a comedian to be invited on the show to do a long Homan impression in the cold open. Maybe they thought we'd just be so thrilled to see Pete Davidson again that it would be okay for him to do Homan as just some guy in a bald wig.

Davidson, you lazy bum, compare your Homan to Jim Carrey's brilliant Broderick Crawford:

Ever since I first heard Tom Homan, he's reminded me Carrey's Broderick Crawford. I watched that in real time, some 30 years ago and I've always remembered it as one of the funniest things I've ever seen on television.

Democrats predicate everything on their voters not knowing things.

They don't care about the quality of the impression. The whole point of any SNL cold open these days is to distribute the bullshit talking points they want out there for the week. They could have had Davidson use the Pete the Puma voice from the old Looney Tunes cartoon and it wouldn't have made any difference.

Also Davidson, a 9-11 orphan (dad was FDNY), ridiculed ICE, which along with DHS was created, at Democrat insistence, to patch up the intel/LE holes that led to the catastrophe that killed his father. Way to show your gratitude, kid.
Though I suppose if anyone has moral license to do it, he does. Kind of like when he ridiculed Dan Crenshaw’s eypatch, not knowing that eye was lost fighting the terrorists that killed the elder Davidson. They had a nice rapprochement on the show a few weeks later. Maybe the real Homan can come on for similar. He can stand up to criticism and still be funny. CC, JSM

It seems a bit like burning ants with a magnifying glass going after SNL and they're inept failed attempts at sketch comedy.

I watched Pete Davidson with the sound off and only for an instant and he reminded me of that squirrel on SpongeBob SquarePants so I came out ahead on that deal.

Davidson has never been funny, and I can't understand his popularity.

"Kind of like when he ridiculed Dan Crenshaw’s eypatch,"

Actually, that was one moment I understood. Davidson was making fun of the ignorance of his generation, not, necessarily, Dan Crenshaw's service. It did blow up, and gave both of them a little public light, though.

I still don't think it was all that funny, however.

The healing power of laughter is extremely important to Mrs. MJB and I. It’s essential to our ongoing healthcare plan because it always helps the spirit. The current crapathetic crop of challenged “comedy” writers working for Lorne Michaels drove us to seek out earlier and funnier eras. We own the first 5 seasons. We ran out of Toonces the Cat excerpts on YouTube. Lately we streamed the excellent series 30 Rock that aired from 06 to 13 I think. It holds up. It even seems outrageous for prime time TV. It might be Alec Baldwin’s best work!

But, it will completely and finally sever any affection for current SNL seeing how good the same production team was pre-Obama.

Howard learned that at a Learing Center for Somali kids.

“And me” is correct yet my writing brain prefers “and I.” Weird. Also the show has been good for our needed laugh therapy and we both recommend it.

That SNL clip was terrible. The left - which means MSM, the judges, the "Entertainment Industry", and the Democrat Party - have all decided that enforcing the immigration laws is verboten. Its "evil".

There is no organized resistance to open borders outside of Trump and some Republicans. You can look forward to 400 million Americans by 2030, with most of the new arrivals being 3rd worlders.

RCOCEAN II said...

Davidson could be funny if the writing wasn't so piss poor.

Finally the Mrs. and I agree with Althouse and the Carrey clip. And pre-Unibomber twin Letterman was equally funny. Then.

I was rewatching the old SNL's from 1975-2000 on peacock. There's a lot of bad stuff, you can't put out 20-24 episodes a year and have it all good. You remember the highlights and forget the 2nd rate skits. But even the mediocre stuff from the 90s is better than the SNL today. I'm always shocked at the bad comedy writing. Is everyone stupid today or have they forgot how to write good jokes?

Maybe everyone is stoned on MJ. Or drunk.

And that is the genius of Trump. Use the left’s tools against them. CC, JSM

I’m thinking we on the right should use another leftie weapon against them: migration. Right at voter registration time, have mass numbers of righties move to blue cities and camp out on the streets, then register to vote there. If it only took five digits worth of Somalis to flip MSP, similarly small numbers of righties could flip blue cities and therefore the states. Naturally we would make sure they came from red cities and states so those wouldn’t flip the other way.

And if the Dem mayors send their cops to clear the rightievilles, Trump can send the Guard to protect the homeless! CC, JSM

Of course they had a rapprochement. Crenshaw is one of the most corrupt people in congress. SNL is on the same side. Nobody hates him more than the rest of the SEAL community he is embarrassing.

Pete Davidson was always playing a close version of Pete Davidson -- the millennial slacker guy. That's similar to how Chris Farley or David Spade was each playing a plausible version of himself. Adam Sandler or Kristen Wiig wasn't so different. They didn't do real impressions of famous people. For that, the show relied on utility impressionists like Dana Carvey or Darrel Hammond or Phil Hartman, and tossed a bone to Dan Ackroyd for Carter or Tina Fey for Palin. So yes, the show thought people would be thrilled to see Pete Davidson again and wouldn't notice or care how lousy the impression was.

Lorne is 15-20 years past his "Best by" date. As with rock and roll and with a very few exceptions, comedy is a younger person's field.

Wasn’t the Homan impersonation in line with the old SNL style of impersonation? I’m thinking Chevy Chase as Ford.

Wasn’t the “joke” that they didn’t even try. The whole point was to drive a narrative? Ford was a clumsy buffoon.

narciso said...

Yeah but his successor is likely worse

Mike (MJB Wolf), suggest you check out the Parks and Recs clips on YT if you're not familiar with the series. I didn't watch the show - I have (had?) an aversion to Amy Poehler - but ran across the YT clips a few years ago. Consistent laughs and some great characters well-played by their actors.

I dunno. I've never- not ever, not once- found Pete Davidson to be funny. Now, I'll admit I haven't paid attention to SNL for decades. But I woke up one day a few years ago and found that Pete Davidson was seemingly everywhere, He was famous and people genuinely seemed to want more of him. So I tried watching some Pete Davidson a few times.

He's just not funny. I don't know what this guy is famous for, but if your expectation was that he was going to be funny, and you're disappointed that he wasn't, well...welcome back to reality.

Sometimes, even though the mob says something is a certain way and they clap vigorously to show how right they are, reality may disagree.

The Broderick Crawford imitation is very funny even if you don't know Broderick Crawford. But for those who did, it was extra funny. For those who didn't, there was the extra weirdness in choosing someone almost random to imitate. Carrey came on strong but also retreated right away into gentle humility. Stars today don't have anything like his brilliance and style and respect for the audience. He really gives.

My first thought with the Carrey clip was: that doesn't sound like Mathew Broderick. Even though I've watched lots of "Highway Patrol" I didn't know Crawford by name. That show is hilarious in it's dated language and style.

bagoh20 said...

I dislike Carrey's politics immensely, but he is one of the most talented entertainers of my lifetime. I remember the first time I ever saw him and his standup was mostly hilarious imitations. I never saw anyone transform like that. It seemed impossible.

Sort of hideous to witness the low level of writing at SNL and the people who find this funny.

I had to look up Crawford. Although Chris Farley didn’t do impressions, I believe he could have done a great Homan. Take his coach character and tone it way way down and you have your Homan.

I always like it when comedians pull off impressions of celebrities that are not commonly impersonated. (Like when Bill Hader did that great Vincent Price impression on SNL.)

Tom Homan looks to me like some guy who would be hosting a YouTube channel on bass fishing.

Also, Pete Davidson reminds me a lot of comedian David Cross in that clip.

Jim Carrey is a mentally ill canadian with a history of drug/alcohol abuse. He may be funny, but his views on politics are idiotic.
