An early effort in the 2028 presidential fight: it's George Will in the Washington Post against J.D. Vance.

I haven't read this piece yet. I decided to blog it based on the headline and the photograph, which I find ludicrously unsubtle:

Let's read it:
Spurning the rich subtleties of the English language, JD Vance has a penchant for words that he perhaps thinks display manly vigor, and express a populist’s rejection of refinement. In a recent social media post, he called someone whose posts annoyed him a “dipshit.” He recently told an interviewer that anyone who criticizes his wife can “eat shit.”...

Maybe, because of Trump, "Americans are inured to such pungent language," Will muses, deploying the rich subtleties "inured" and "pungent." George Will's father was a philosophy professor. You can imagine the language he grew up with and that is second nature to him. We know Vance's story.

Here's an excerpt from page 132 of "Hillbilly Elegy": "[Mamaw] was a hard woman to live with, quick-witted and sharp-tongued. If I didn’t take out the garbage, she told me to 'stop being a lazy piece of shit.' When I forgot to do my homework, she called me 'shit for brains' and reminded me that unless I studied, I’d amount to nothing."

From page 158, as Vance entered the Marine Corps: "We were allowed one phone call, so I naturally called Mamaw and read off of the card they gave me: 'I have arrived safely at Parris Island. I will send my address soon. Goodbye.' 'Wait, you little shithead. Are you okay?'"

Page 166: "Mamaw, naturally, worried that I had picked up a gambling habit and was playing cards in some mountain trailer with a bunch of card-sharking hillbillies, but I assured her that it was online and legitimate. 'Well, you know I don’t understand the fucking Internet. Just don’t turn to booze and women. That’s always what happens to dipshits who get caught up in gambling.'"

Describing his college experience, at page 186-187, he deploys Mamaw's language himself, and it is very carefully aimed: "During an undergraduate seminar in foreign policy, I listened as a nineteen-year-old classmate with a hideous beard spouted off about the Iraq war. He explained that those fighting the war were typically less intelligent than those (like him) who immediately went to college. It showed, he argued, in the wanton way soldiers butchered and disrespected Iraqi civilians.... As the student prattled on, I thought about the never-ending training on how to respect Iraqi culture—never show anyone the bottom of your foot, never address a woman in traditional Muslim garb without first speaking to a male relative. I thought about the security we provided for Iraqi poll workers, and how we studiously explained the importance of their mission without ever pushing our own political views on them.... I thought about my friends who were covered in third-degree burns, 'lucky' to have survived an IED attack in the Al-Qaim region of Iraq. And here was this dipshit in a spotty beard telling our class that we murdered people for sport."

And finally, on pages 191-192, he uses "shit" not to humiliate ordinary people but to speak truth to the elite: "Many try to blame the anger and cynicism of working-class whites on misinformation.... The people I know are well aware of what the major news organizations have to say... they simply don’t believe them.... To many of us, the free press—that bulwark of American democracy—is simply full of shit."

Back to George Will. Just a bit more from the last paragraph:

Vance has a knack for late — very late — adolescent naughtiness. It is not easy being transgressive in an era when there are few norms remaining to transgress.... Performative politics is almost the only politics on offer nowadays. But must it be a coarseness and flippancy competition?

In the spirit of using course language that reflects what we grew up with I think some good words to characterize Vance would be "tool", "douchebag", and "poser".

I'm not a big fan of vulgar language by public officials. If you go around in most Corporate enviroments and start saying "fuck this" and "shit that" you'll probably get a EEO complaint.

Plus, the constant use of fuck, shit, etc. just proves you have the vocabulary of 12 year old. And its boring....as fuck to listen to people lard their language with endless vulgarity.

That said, I don't really care. Lots of Democrats have been running around saying fuck and shit in public and smirking about it. And not a word from "mr. high standards" George Will. So its just more political fakery.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

This is the highbrow attempt at Civility Bullshit but Will's major malfunction is in attributing — falsely — to Trump what Vance came by through his own life experiences. Will's TDS clouds his vocabulary-stuffed noodle. He is a parody of his former self, living only to police conservative thoughts and statements because the GOPe loves its scolds.

I don't mind the use of bad words, if it's done creatively and showing some wit. George Will, now he's rather fussy as cross-dressing Old Ladies go, so we have to show some deference to age and position. And I do like how they decided to post the story with a 'Who Farted?' picture of Vance. Shows they're unbiased, right up front.

When Vance cusses, it comes off as completely authentic. That's the difference between him and the Dems who keep cussing to "show how angry they are." Vance's choice of words hasn't been workshopped.

I used to ride around with transmission line crews, and hang out in service yards and control rooms and factory floors, as well as cubicle farms and board rooms. This is not such an odd thing for engineers/tech consultants, we are, if we're lucky, a sort of intermediary race.
The workers, for a while(in any instance ), treated me like a potentially troublesome intruder from the land of high rises or at least office parks, and I've got that definite but unplaceable accent that says I'm some sort of Euro, and so watched their words. But that would pass, and we would happily listen to Limbaugh while rolling down I-5. There weren't all that many shits and fucks.
As for "Plus, the constant use of fuck, shit, etc. just proves you have the vocabulary of 12 year old. " - I dont care. It does seem to me, that the use of profane language is often a symptom of laziness. It is hard to find the precise words to describe what you find offensive about some repugnant asshole, and "asshole" feels like it is getting the job done. Think about a thing like Adam Schiff. The blast of hostility that courses through me at sight of that shit-weasel is a physical sensation, and merely to call him a "liar" doesn't do it justice.

At the same time, language is a tool, and it behooves politicians to make good use of that tool. There is something to be said for referring to a thing like Schiff as "the Honorable Gentleman from California", with a telling emphasis and a curl of the lip. Perhaps we should assume that Will is just trying to help Vance to up his game.

I grew up in a family in which no one cursed - not even my curmudgeonly grandfather. But then I (and my then-boyfriend, now husband of thirty-three years) became a mudlogger after graduating with a geology degree, and when we were finished on a well and regrouped back at our apartment, it would take several days for us to stop talking at high volume and peppering our conversation with casual cusswords. Interestingly to me, now that our kids are out of the house, we have kind of returned to that mode of expression - not the high volume, but the casual cussing.

But I still enjoy exploring the rich nuances of the English language, as I suspect Vance does as well, when the company warrants it. When the company consists of schoolteachers turning out high school kids to carry Fudge ICE signs (only they didn't say "fudge!"), I'd say the rich nuances of the English language are unwarranted.

Anyway, it's not something I'd get in a huff about. Will does not hold sway over many any longer. Will was once THE columnist I enjoyed reading. Mainly because of his use of the language. But that ended years ago when society moved to a different spot and he stayed where he was- judging today's people from yesteryear's porch. I doubt very much George Will spent much time in middle Ohio or in the hills of Appalachia where Vance spent his summers as a boy.

All that said, and I know this from my own life, there are places to use that language and places to hold it. We do seem to have erased any lines of propriety in language and actions these days. Standards seem to be as rare as GOP Senators with guts. But that's where we are now.

Kinda shocked how angry some of the commenters are that JD Vance was skewered by a columnist. Get used to it. One was so angry he went on to pre-kill Ron DeSantis and attach him to Romney. What's next. Marco Rubio is Romney?

Jeez, people. The attacks on Vance haven't even really started yet. And the response is going to need to be better than saying the attacker is like Romney. That's like taking a banana peel to a knife fight.

In my opinion Vance is very articulate. He uses profanity occasionally as way to emphasize a particular emotional reaction he has toward his subject, in this case, disdain.
Before condemning Vance's choice of words, George Will should have ask himself, Was Vance wrong? Is Jon Favreau a dipshit? The answer, of course, is yes, indeed he is a registered, purebred, congenital dipshit. Therefore Vance's application of the term was both justified and technically correct and Will's work on this column was a complete waste of time.
Do better, George.

Here comes the branding of JD as uncivilized. Actually he is jut a better debater than any known Dem. Yes he is acting as Trump’s enforcer and that requires a tough attack style as a male Scots Irishman playing his role.

Twist that as you will, but a least he’s damn good at it.

Howard: "It's jobs like these. Why we need a bracero program"

No, we need an internal migration program. We used to have one, until welfare and all the court cases that make states pay welfare to whoever shows up. We had a black and redneck Great Migration to the north, Okies to the west, etc. All following the jobs.

Either let market forces motivate Americans to follow the jobs again, or if you really want to be socialist about it, pay and subsidize Americans to go to where the jobs are. Fedgov can tell a welfare recipient, hey, you can keep collecting that check, or you can take this bigger check and go work in the food processing industry, where you will get still bigger checks every week.

Sell the idea to the Ds as a way to infiltrate their voters into red ag states. CC, JSM

Vance tells people who insult his wife to "eat shit." It probably took his wife a decade or so to get him to stop beating the hell out those dipshits. (With a nod to Bess Truman, who when told Harry had used the word "manure," smiled and said it had taken years to get his language improved enough to say that.)

john mosby said...

Yeah you really don't want JD to clean up his language and go completely YLS logical advocate on you. Yeah, don't throw him in that briar patch. CC, JSM

However, the trends show that Trump’s support increased significantly among specific, sometimes overlapping, groups within the Latino community, rather than a specific historical immigrant group:
Regional Concentration: High support for Trump was found among Latino voters in specific, long-settled areas, such as South Texas (Tejano communities) and rural areas, rather than among recently arrived immigrants.
Generational/Acculturation Factors: Analysis suggests that higher rates of voting for Trump among Latinos are more closely associated with greater generational acculturation (3rd generation or more in the U.S.), speaking English, and residing in the country for longer periods.
Economic Factors: The shift was strongest among working-class Latino men, who often prioritized economic concerns and border security over other issues.
2024 Trends: In 2024, Trump secured 46% of the Latino vote (an increase from 2020), with strong support among Latino men, but the data does not specifically disaggregate by ancestral connection to the 1942–1964 Bracero Program.
While the Bracero program shaped the immigration history of many Mexican-American families in the US, the voting behavior of those descendants in recent elections is more strongly linked to economic, regional, and acculturation factors than to a shared ancestral history of the program itself.

The wapo posts a carefully curated picture of our vp. The adolescents there present him as a cave man, a cave man who went to Yale, a frozen cave man Yale Lawyer! These kids are too tiny for their pants. They are full of sound and fury, like a drunk on a rampage.

And the NYT has not condemned their reporter for stating that Vance’s mother should have sold him for drugs. That is very creepy, and it seems the NYT is very creepy and sick.

Josephbleau said...

Let’s all agree that no child should be sold by his mother for drugs, and no one should suggest that, do the democrats agree?

Josephbleau said...

Can we all unite and demand that the NYT stop supporting their employees that approve of children being sold by their mothers for drugs?

Thanks for the reminder, narciso, I knew Will went off the tracks long before 2016.

You don't have to be Scots-Irish hailing from Appalachia, (otherwise known as hillbillies) to use terms like shithead and dipshit. Even cheeseheads from Green Bay to Madison readily use the terms. Mamaw, from Eastern Ken-tucky and living close to Ole Randall McCoy's place along the Tug Fork of the Big Sandy doesn't own the name-calling words.

A typical WP reader ALREADY HATES Vance so I don’t think Wills’s opening torpedo in the WP's 2028 attack campaign will hurt Vance much, especially this far out. As for George Will, he pissed away any persuasive influence among center-right minded independents and Republicans he had long ago with his marital infidelity scandals albeit not as bad as Trump has. The WP's "house conservative" is and has been a laughingstock that way for some time.

George Will is 85. At some point you should retire. And it's before you turn 85. I don't pay much attention to octogenarians who live in a bubble.

It's jobs like these. Why we need a bracero program

What is it with Democrats and their desperate desire to import cheap labor / second class citizens / slaves (latest proposal: the illegals can come here and work cheap, they just can't have a path for citizenship so that, unlike slaves, they count as a whole person, not 3/5 of one, when it comes to representation, but just like the slaves, they can't ever vote)?

How about, no. If you can't make the job be something that Americans are willing to do for the pay you offer, then either you offer more pay, change the job, or it doesn't get done in America
