Trump embraces the title "King." Either he's laughing in the face of the "No Kings" crowd or he's forgotten about them altogether.

What's the context? I had to look it up. I found "Trump threatens tariffs to force support for US control of Greenland/Trump's threat marked another escalation of his campaign to control the island, which is a territory of US ally Denmark" (USA Today), which reports on a health policy event at the White House yesterday, where Trump "trumpeted how the threat of tariffs forced other developed countries to accept higher drug prices so U.S. prices could come down."

Trump then added that he might use tariffs to get what he wants about Greenland. He said:  "I may put a tariff on countries if they don’t go along with Greenland because we need Greenland for national security."

And then he praised himself more generally, declaring: "I’m the tariff king and the tariff king has done a great job."

UPDATE: "Trump Announces 10 Percent Tariff on European Countries in Standoff Over Greenland/The president escalated his drive to take charge of the Danish territory, targeting Denmark and seven other nations aligned with it" (NYT):
Denmark, which oversees Greenland, will be hit with a 10 percent tariff on all goods sent to the United States beginning on Feb. 1, he wrote in a social media post, along with Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands and Finland. If they don’t relent, he added, the tariff rate will increase to 25 percent on June 1, “until such time as a Deal is reached for the Complete and Total purchase of Greenland.”

Yikes.

Denmark is a founding NATO member, and consistently supports U.S.- led missions, deploying forces for stabilization and counter-terrorism efforts in the Middle East and elsewhere. Denmark sent troops to support U.S. efforts in both Afghanistan and Iraq. Denmark allows the U.S. to operate the Pituffik Space Base (formerly Thule Air Base) in Greenland, a crucial strategic military asset. Denmark recently assisted U.S. forces in intercepting an oil tanker violating sanctions in the Atlantic. Danish companies invest heavily in the U.S., creating nearly 150,000 U.S. jobs through direct presence and trade. Denmark is a major source of Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) in the U.S., and the U.S. is Denmark's largest non-European trading partner. Also, Denmark recognized the U.S. as early as the late 18th century, establishing early diplomatic ties.

This isn’t Trump adopting gangster language for geopolitical effect. This is Trump doing the only thing he’s ever know how to do.

People forget: the Trump Organization was never a serious institutional real estate company. It was a 15 person family office that operated like an outer-borough shakedown operation with nice suits. And that operation had a very specific playbook… Stiff the contractors, then dare them to sue, knowing litigation costs more than the disputed invoice. Treat every “no“ from the zoning board as an opening position to be worn down through pressure and threats. Surround yourself only with family and compromised loyalists, because anyone with independent standing might say no. Never admit fault, never back down, never let them see you accept a loss even when settling quietly out the back door. And treat any written agreement as a “starting point”.

This is exactly what he’s doing with Greenland. Question Denmark’s legal standing. Threaten tariffs. Refuse to rule out military force against a NATO ally? Keep escalating until the other side decides accommodation is less painful than resistance. It’s the same bully pattern he used against electrical subcontractors in Atlantic City, just with different stakes.

Trump isn’t playing a new game. He’s playing the only game he knows. The question is whether the rest of the world will keep letting him win it.

Tariffs and expansionism. Trump is quite a 19th century president.

I don't see the need to annex Greenland. We already have base there and don't need the headache of running everything else there. I do wonder if we could have gotten Greenland when we bought the Virgin Islands from Denmark. In fact, when we bought the islands we gave up claims that we had on Greenland based on polar exploration. Wilson might have been able to get us Greenland, FDR the British Virgin Islands, and Truman Newfoundland and Labrador if they'd been more expansionist, but all that is in the past now.

1910 proposal
A proposal for acquisition of Greenland was discussed within the American government in 1910 by United States ambassador to Denmark Maurice Francis Egan. As suggested by Danish "persons of importance" who were friends of Egan, the United States would trade Mindanao and Palawan for Greenland and the Danish West Indies; Denmark could then trade Mindanao and Palawan to Germany for Northern Schleswig.

Now that's diplomacy!

Talking up Greenland's mineral wealth and potential only makes Denmark want to hold on to it more. It's not just about the money. American annexation talk rouses Danish nationalism as it roused Canadian nationalism. Wikipedia tells us, "The West Indies were only an investment to Danes, but from the Danish Golden Age of the 19th century they saw Danish overseas colonies in the North Atlantic, including Greenland, as part of their Viking history and national identity." As the Danish foreign minister told the US ambassador when we tried to buy Greenland in 1946, "[w]hile we owe much to America I do not feel that we owe them the whole island of Greenland".

As a New Hampshire senator said recently, after noting that the US has full access to Greenland for national security and natural resources, why pay for what we already get for free?

Denmark pays over $5 billion/year to maintain Greenland, plus what looks like another $10 billion more recently to increase security/defense. Moreover, NATO -- including the US -- is obligated to defend Greenland in the event of a Russia or Chinese attack, so anyone invading Greenland is already subject to war with NATO, which isn't all that attractive either.

Honestly this is a great premise for a sitcom:

In the icy wasteland of Greenland, a ragtag NATO detachment of 13 Germans, 2 Norwegians, 3 Swedes, 15 French and 1 lone Brit must "defend" the Arctic from... well, mostly boredom, polar bears, and each other's national stereotypes.

Stationed at a remote outpost in Nuuk, their biggest enemies are cabin fever, frozen plumbing, the Danes who keep forgetting they're there, and each other. They’re constantly prepping to counter the absurd threat of an American takeover with the total force smaller than a pub trivia team.

The show will have everything - petty national rivalries that project from history, offensive cultural stereotypes, frustration due to NATO bureaucracy, and because this is so European, the whole thing will be pretty gay.

Oh and a recurring theme is that they will constantly be picking on the lone Brit."

ha.

Most European leaders view Trump’s interest in Greenland as driven primarily by ego rather than genuine U.S. national security concerns.

It’s particularly telling that the Trump administration have not proposed any specific NATO measures or requirements for enhancing Greenland’s security — suggesting little real interest in actual negotiation.

This stands in stark contrast to the numerous demands the Trump Administration has made (and Europe has largely accepted) in support of Ukraine.

Prediction: There will be a *Danish Taco* in the near future.

"Canadian leader’s visit to Beijing yields agreement on ‘strategic partnership’"

Today, the United States is widely regarded as an unreliable partner by most of its long-standing allies—a development that works significantly to China's advantage.

No need to bully Denmark.

Just bribe the 40,000 inhabitants with $1M each and let them self-determine their way to instant wealth. That would be a rounding error on the US' balance sheet, and worth every penny for Greenland.

Then they are retarded mind readers who can't even read minds very well.

Carney selling Canada out to China is Trump's fault. We should bring up Carney's long business history with China. That is how he made a lot of money.

This is how stupid you have to be to be a Democrat now.

This sock muppet is an absolute idiot.

In other words, the US has stopped rolling over for its "long-standing allies", who have been perfectly happy with tariffs on US exports coming into their countries while the US wasn't returning the "favor", along with helping finance their social welfare policies by covering their security with US taxpayer dollars.

Personally, I wouldn't worry about being considered "unreliable" by people like that. But then, that's just me.

The MAGA so called America First policy more being an America Loses policy.

What China has feared most about the U.S. is its wide alliances. Trump's cavalier and hubristic destruction of its reliability and trustworthiness amongst allies is breathtaking strategic incompetence.

Most US allies are doing some de-risking from the US.

China. The fact is that this deal represents 2.5-3% of cars sold in Canada and essentially just replaces the supply that would’ve likely gone to TSLA with cheaper options since nobody up their wants to spend their CAD with Musk or US companies.

In exchange Canadian farmers and fishermen benefit from access to a huge export market. Solid win for Canadians, big loss for TSLA.

They should invite China to take over the Northvolt plant in Quebec. Ask CATL to set up shop there and exempt made-in Canada cells from tariffs. My guess is China will help fund and build the second Transmountain oil pipeline. Good use of some of the steel China needs to dump. Then after that comes Chinese EV car assembly plants. A couple U.S. car manufacturers have already started to shift their plants south, so 40 million Canadians seem primed to buy cheap EVs Meanwhile the U.S. is not negotiating a trade agreement with Canada?

You can’t make this stuff up, but the U.S. seems to be repetitively shooting themselves in the foot.

The European and Canadian "Allies" are in a demographic death spiral who are going to be majority Muslim in 10 years. Nobody intelligent gives a shit what they plan on doing.

Anyone who trades with China is selling out their people. We sold out our middle and working class for decades.

5.5% GDP growth. (higher than China btw)
Real Wage growth for the first time since Trump was President last time.
More American Citizens getting jobs.

The only thing we are shooting in the foot is the Globalist Corporate Oligarchs that Canada is sucking off under Carney.

You Should go read what the Canadian Automaker Union has to say about Carney kissing China's ass.

When I search, I sure don't see 5.5% GDP growth last year.
How about a source for that claim?

It was an estimate by the Atlanta Fed's GDPNow model for the 4th qtr. Since changed to 5.3% as of Jan 14. First official number to be released Feb 20, sez Grok.
