I liked Irma Thomas singing the national anthem at the Sugar Bowl.

Here she is singing "Time Is on My Side" with Mick Jagger last year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zg1VvXIfQdY

She recorded the song in the 60s before the Stones did.

I can’t wait to hear from Dr. Weevil on the reports of a New Year’s Eve Ukrainian drone attack that killed 24 civilians, including children, celebrating the New Year in a resort area in Kherson.

Let me guess, Dr. Weasel will say Russia killed their own people to make the pure, pure Ukraines look bad.

I say either the reports are wrong and it was accidental fire or the Ukrainians targeted civilians because they are engaged in a civil war between two brutal Slavic autocracies and there are zero vital US interests in that fight.

How about Fulton illegally counting and tabulating 315000 ballots that were counted multiple times.

We all definitely saw something happen right before our eyes. They put plywood up over the windows and kicked poll watchers out.

That is what we saw.

It is abundantly clear, that the election was rigged.

Thanks to the secret ballot, Covid chaos, and mail-in ballots, it is impossible to say whether the election was stolen, or not: the only reasonable position is agnosticism.

What would hearings accomplish?

I have been a poll worker in Idaho for the last six years. If every state had election procedures like Idaho does, which means completely unlike Fulton County, there would be absolutely no doubt of the outcome.

But blue states seem to prefer opaque elections.

It's kind of sad that hardly any of the Althouse commentariat—including our hostess herself—bother to put in true html links rather than text links—when it's really so easy (like putting a capital letter at the beginning of a sentence, and a period at the end—I see most people manage that!).

I, for one, hardly ever (maybe 1 out of 20 proffered, if that) follow text links—unless the description provided makes it extremely interesting to me. Folks like Narciso, who oftentimes put in no description for their text links, I think I followed maybe one in the last year.

Note that folks who say “I can't trust html links” really have no leg to stand on here, as all one need do (after perhaps enabling it in Settings) is hover your mouse over the link on a PC (turn on the status bar)—or hold your finger down on the link on an (e.g.) iPhone—to see where it leads before deciding to follow it.

Hearings would cement everything you just said in the public discourse. People like us take all those things for granted, but they have been excluded from decent society.

Hearings could also go a bit further and examine the people who made the decisions that turned the process so opaque. Even getting them to go through contortions could generate some Rose Mary Woods moments that might stick in the zeitgeist for a while. CC, JSM

Before Musk bought twitter (much more significant than direct political contributions) his enterprises were being harassed by government agencies and "lawfare". This was, note, before Musk committed to supporting Republicans. That Democratic-left social hostility to engineering/industry is culturally inherent to the US-UK left. The hatred for his car and rocket companies was inherent.
This is the C.P.Snow "Two Cultures" thing, but its become vastly worse in the decades since the 1950s.
So to proceed with the truly massive buildout of the "Starship" infrastructure and related R&D, and to extract capital for that and related initiatives from Tesla, he needed political protection, hence a political alliance.
This was the same lesson Bill Gates got during the Microsoft antitrust prosecutions. Previously unconcerned with politics, Microsoft learned it had to hire lobbyists and pay off politicians, in self defense from predatory political "entrepreneurs". That led to various tech giants buying up media properties, among other things, in self defense.

It's no surprise that you can't get a workable html link from the foregoing—you're placing “curly” quotes (rather than the code-required "straight" quotes) around the text link—that doesn't work. iOS thoughtfully makes curly quotes the default, but that can be changed in Settings (or else override the default for the present instant—me, I leave curly quotes always turned off, but then type them in—using a bluetooth keyboard—wherever I want them).

To alter the default: Go to Settings / General / Keyboard, then turn “Smart Punctuationoff.

To override the default, on the other hand (using iOS's crappy on-screen keyboard):
• Type your preceding text up to the point of the link, then type
<a href=
• Followed by holding down the double-quote key (") (or single-quote (') works too) until the iOS subsidiary menu comes up, at which point select the straight quote (rightmost item).
• Then type (or better, paste) in the link text itself.
• Enter another straight double- or single-quote character (use the same quote character as entered above) to bracket the end of the text link string.
• End the open-tag string with a ‘>’.
• Thus, the complete open-tag string will look like this:
<a href="https://blahblah.com">
• (Optionally) enter a string of text describing where the link is going to take one. (That text can be just the link itself repeated.)
• Finally, place an end-tag to close the whole shebang:
</a>

Michael McNeil said...

Also, the keyword parameter to use for the <a>nchor link is href= not “html=”.

Many here have wondered whether Tim in Vermont was actually Timofei in Voronezh, given his 100% adherence to the Putinite line. Is ‘Bill, Republic of Texas’ actually Boris, Republic of Tatarstan? An honest man would have put an ‘alleged’ in the first sentence of his 7:22pm comment. As far as I can find, the only evidence for this massacre is “reports” from the same Russians who continue to lie about a supposed drone attack on Putin’s Valdai palace. Of course, even if it did happen as alleged, it wouldn’t even be in the top 20 massacres of civilians in this war. Probably in the top 100, but the other 99 have all been massacres of Ukrainians by Russians, and Bill, or Boris, has no objection to those.

Fair enough. There are more ways to access the intertubes than can easily be accounted for.

"And why shouldn't posters provide html links (which are easily constructed while posting) as a service to their readers?"

Has anyone said that posters shouldn't?

"I'm sure many links never get followed, not just by me."

No doubt.

"Why bother posting links if you're going to limit your reach from the start?"

Because the poster doesn't remember the html code needed to create an active link and doesn't feel like doing a search for it, for one thing.
