Minnesota in rapid decline.

ADDED: The rowdy mob is throwing snowballs. Reminiscent of the Boston Massacre.

AND: From David McCullough's "John Adams" (commission earned):
ON THE COLD MOONLIT EVENING of March 5, 1770, the streets of Boston were covered by nearly a foot of snow. On the icy, cobbled square where the Province House stood, a lone British sentry, posted in front of the nearby Custom House, was being taunted by a small band of men and boys. The time was shortly after nine. Somewhere a church bell began to toll, the alarm for fire, and almost at once crowds came pouring into the streets, many men, up from the waterfront, brandishing sticks and clubs. As a throng of several hundred converged at the Custom House, the lone guard was reinforced by eight British soldiers with loaded muskets and fixed bayonets, their captain with drawn sword. Shouting, cursing, the crowd pelted the despised redcoats with snowballs, chunks of ice, oyster shells, and stones. In the melee the soldiers suddenly opened fire, killing five men....

Not too many people are talking about the lead-up to this incident: the big ICE F-150 truck wasn't able to get unstuck in the Frey-unplowed street. The decedent and her car were part of a group of resisters who, probably using their anti-ICE app, responded to surround the truck. That's checking all the blocks of a really bad situation. I mean, even the gangbangers in Chicago help push the CPD cars out of the snow, so they'll get out of the hood and drug sales can resume!

So the ICE guys were showing a lot of restraint by just walking up to the decedent's vehicle to ask/order her out of the way.

Really need to get the Chavistas up here. Will make both countries more free....CC, JSM

Anyways, I'm mildly annoyed that none of the cops had their guns drawn while her hands were clearly off the steering wheel. If they had, maybe she'd still be alive. Only felons, idiots, and drug addicts don't realize that trying to flee the cops is a bad idea, and an automatic felony in many states if done in a vehicle.

On blue waters, the first tap is to disable the target. The second is to sink the wreckage that may present a forward-looking risk

In human rite practices, the first tap is to abort the child. The second is affirmative action to ensure he is no longer poses a viable threat. Then the "burden" of evidence is sequestered and/or cannibalized in darkness.

In a self-defense situation, where there is a clear and progressive threat, the taps are largely reflexive to ensure the risk to the target and persons in proximity is mitigated.

Driver licensing requires the operator to wait until the vehicle is sufficiently clear of obstacles and bodies in her path.

I think this is very analogous to a a cop shooting a fleeing robber who reaches in his pocket and pulls out a cell phone. The cop's perception of what is happening is incorrect, but reasonable, so when I earlier called it a "bad shoot" I may be wrong in the legal sense, but I mean in the sense of what should have happened with God like knowledge, and what I wished had happened instead. There is no doubt that like the robber with the cell phone, she should not have been there doing what she did, which in the end caused it all to happen.

I would be interested in what the protocol is for law enforcement when a motor vehicle operator attempts to evade arrest by accelerating a vehicle when stopped by an officer. Is the officer just supposed to let the arrestee escape?
If you get pulled over and you then try to drive away after the officer gets out of his vehicle, aren't you going to get shot? Regardless of whether you are a threat to the officer?
Does the officer have a duty to the public at large not to allow drivers to avoid arrest by driving away? Otherwise we have wild and dangerous chases? What if the driver is reasonably believed to be intoxicated?
I am truly mystified by the thought process of a person who would attempt to drive away while officers are pointing guns at you and telling you to stop. Tragic, but what the hell was she thinking?

Yancey Ward said...

You can pretty much know how this came about- this isn't the first time anti-ICE activists have blocked ICE vehicles on the streets. I am guessing their "training" such as it is tells them to get in the way and when challenged drive off and come back a second time if possible. They are probably sold on the idea by being told that the worst that can happen to them is getting arrested.

The agent used deadly force. That is OK if the agent reasonably believed doing so was necessary to prevent imminent death or serious bodily injury. Ultimately, if there is an indictment, that question will go to a jury. The film will matter, but so will the testimony of the witnesses. As Shouting Thomas points out, there's no way to tell how that will come out. Wrong of Trump and Noem offer their interpretation on such flimsy evidence; Walz and the mayor maybe were on slightly stronger ground, because they were responding to earlier characterizations. Generally, the responsible attitude is wait and see.

I don't feel competent to judge the actions of this one agent on this particular day. I do feel confident in stating that democrats let millions of people into our country illegally, they did so for their own partisan benefit, once Trump got into office law enforcement has been going about the task of enforcing our laws (a Herculean task, given the shear number of illegals), and that democrat politicians and activists have been stoking the flames of confrontation against those agents, again for their own personal interests. Something like this was inevitable, indeed it was desired by those politicians. I know where I place much of the responsibility.

mccullough said...

If the state indicts, the federal government will remove the case to federal court, show the judge the video, and the case will be dismissed. The prosecutor who brings this case will be indicted.

"Wrong of Trump and Noem offer their interpretation on such flimsy evidence"

What other evidence is there likely to be other than the 4 or 5 different videos all of us have already seen? One of the ironies here is if the agents had drawn their weapons once she blocked the road, she might well have surrendered the vehicle when ordered. With no guns pointed at her, she thought she could run.

bagoh20 said...

"She accelerated a car at the agent. That’s not like pulling a cellphone. That’s like pulling a gun. "

If she wanted to run him over, she easily could have. Watch the wheels. She purposefully turns away when she sees him in front of her, and she successfully avoids running him over, or he'd be under the car. Just like pulling a cell phone is not intended to shoot a cop. In both cases, they are not harming the cop, yet it's reasonable for the cop to think they are and shoot. I just wish they hadn't, and the cops do too.

But at a higher level this was destined to happen, it was the outcome of a sequence of decisions affirmatively made. Governors and mayors supported opposition to federal law enforcement action. Mobs pressured federal law enforcement when they were conducting operations. So those events over time created a moment where tragedy occurred.

Humans are not perfect. Conflict creates stress that ruptures intention. It is known as a slow motion train wreck. This was inevitable and very sad. And, I may think, what some wanted.

I commented a while ago about a line in a movie “ This is out of control, this is out of control and we will be lucky to live through it.” It turns out that was the case. And politics will use it to excuse the complicity and fecklessness of our betters.

It is odd how anti-mask jabber has switched sides, re armed folks in our country v folks worried about Covid.

For me, I've always thought that it was a good thing re Japanese culture when I saw that people there would wear a mask when they felt ill. They did this to avoid spreading their illness to others. And this behavior was before Covid. I guess that's some sort of collectivism, not rugged individuality, hence it is bad re the US POV. Still, I thought it was nice.

I don't understand why this dude that shot the driver needs to have his mask. Likewise the other Federal folks that are roaming around America. Maybe he had the mask on because it is cold in those northern middle states (aka flyover states). His mask looks very thin, so not too much insulation. But probably an okay wind block.

Maybe I'm old fashioned, but it seems like robbers wear masks and cops don't. But nowadays when kids play cops and robbers, it's the cops that have masks and the robbers (i.e. the bad people like this 37 yo woman that was killed) that don't have masks.

I've been expecting that the leftists would succeed in provoking a Rachel Corrie incident with their nonstop irresponsible dramatics.

Now they have their death to exploit.

The officer who was ordering the driver to stop and exit the vehicle appeared to have his hands inside the window or on the window jamb, and was standing on an obviously slippery snowy/icy roadway. The officer in front of the vehicle was covering not only himself, but also the contact officer who could easily have been dragged by the vehicle when the driver accelerated away.

Anyone who has watched a few badgecam videos has seen this scenario play out, often with severe injury to officers and a terrifying vehicle chase.

The left is merciless in its manipulation and exploitation of useful followers - especially including the well meaning who are "trying to help" by obstructing law enforcement.

I'm justifying that this 37 yo deserved to breathe, which is what she was doing before she was killed. And you et. al. are justifying that she deserved to die. Just another dirty liberal that is protesting MAGA. She FAFOed. So she got what she and all other liberals protesting MAGA deserve. They Find Out! Just like Cricket Found Out.

I assume they actually know she was deliberately hindering their progress down the street but, no, not a single one of them has admitted to that fact. In fact, Lefty Mark tried to imply that she panicked when surrounded by men with guns, ignoring the fact that that is exactly what she was trying to make happen.

"Protesting"

Bullshit.
Protesting can be done from the side-lines.
She was physically entering federal Agent space and purposefully harassing them - with the threat of violence.

No, what she was doing was obstructing officers performing their duties- she was, in fact, committing a felony by blocking the street at exactly that place and time and committed another felony by attempting to flee. It is ok to argue that she didn't deserve to die for doing that but try not lie about her own responsibility for getting her ass killed.

Blocking the street then accelerating the car at law enforcement isn’t protesting.

I live in Utah, as some of you may know. Let's rewind, shall we? During the Sainted St. Floyd riots, a leftist by the name of John Sullivan led a BLM "Protest" in Provo, Utah. This same John Sullivan was the Antifa member who invaded the US Capitol on Jan 6 and filmed the cops murdering Ashley Babbitt.

In any event, the Provo event was characterized by one of his BLM/antifa buddies shooting into and trying to kill a driver who was just going home from a shopping trip. Sullivan and his goons had blockaded the streets, and the poor driver just turned a corner and found himself in a mob of angry leftists, one of whom tried to kill him. The driver had to go to the hospital, drove himself there. Sullivan tried to justify the shooting, saying "We thought he was trying to run over protestors!" Video showed that to absolutely not be the case.

And our leftists? 100% fine with the shooting. Absolutely a-ok with the idea of shooting someone in a car if you thought they were going to drive over a leftist. Now? It's "Nazi Gestapo Murder of innocent people!!!!!"

See, it's ok if leftists shoot to kill people in cars. Inga, Kak, chuck, Le douanier are totally fine with leftists shooting to kill people they think are dangers. But when leftists try to murder cops? Oh, then it's Nazi! if the cops fight back.

MountainMan said...

According to Kristi Noem, the officer involved in the shooting was rammed and dragged along the ground by an anti-ICE rioter in a vehicle in a prior episode in June, 2025, sustaining injuries. I expect this could have influenced his reaction..

Vance said...

MountainMan, I am sure our leftists will view that as a "Missed opportunity" to "stand up for our dear rapists and murders Joe imported to make America better by voting for total Democrat control!"

Powerline:
"It looks as though the liberals are hoping to turn this incident into George Floyd 2.0. What they really should do is look in the mirror. There is too much loose talk about the all-American virtue of “protesting.” Yes, we have the right to assemble peacefully, and many of us do it often. But we do not have the right to form a mob that threatens law enforcement and interferes with the execution of their duties. That is a crime, and it is deeply unfortunate that apparently no one spends even a night or two in jail in consequence of such actions. Still less, of course, do we have the right to endanger law enforcement personnel by driving our vehicles at them. Such conduct constitutes a deadly threat, and it was the cause of today’s tragic incident.

UPDATE: Tim Walz gave a press conference this afternoon, in which he announced that he has put the Minnesota National Guard on notice that they may be called out, apparently to fight ICE. In response to a question, he mused about the possibility of civil war:"

Didn't a liberal get run over as part of the Jews/you will not replace us rally that involved very fine people from outside the community that showed up to protest a local community deciding to take down a local statue that was originally specifically installed to protest equal rights being, finally, given to black people? In that situation the driver aimed for the liberals. In this current situation, the driver cranked the wheel from far left to far right to avoid running over the dude. Not to mention nobody shot the Unite The Right guy.

These seem like different situations.

Yeah, I worked with the MNARNG a lot because they were a roundout for the Big Red One. Their officers, like any Army officers of any component, are not about to fight federal agents on the orders of a lame-duck ex-UNCO (Useless NCO; not to imply in the least that they all are, but the real NCOs can spot the UNCOs a mile away). My initial thought was that possibly the woman was an illegal immigrant who simply panicked when confronted by ICE officers. Which would be tragic but perhaps understandable.
But if she had in fact been deliberately engaging in an ongoing campaign to obstruct the ICE officers, then she knew, based on her earlier actions in obstructing the ICE operations, that she was likely to be arrested at that moment.
When the ICE cops pulled their guns, the fun was over. That's when you put your hands up in the air. EVEN IF YOU THINK THE COPS ARE WRONG. She seems not to have understood this. She seems to have believed that it was really a game, and that she could just drive away, and keep playing.

Having looked at several videos, this is what I see:

* SUV is stopped perpendicularly across the road, driver side window rolled down, driver waving other cars to pass in front of her
* a pickup with flashing blue lights pulls up
* two uniformed law enforcement officers get out of the pick-up and tell the driver of the SUV to get out of the car.
* rather than comply, the SUV backs up
* one officer grabs ahold of the door handle trying to open the door, as one of them again tells driver again to get out of the car
* SUV begins driving forward toward a third uniformed law enforcement officer, who, as soon as the SUV begins moving forward, begins drawing his pistol
* SUV accelerates, turning to the right
* third officer fires at windshield
* SUV's right fender hits the firing officer, who continues to fire, now through the open window.

As others have said, the firing office had no idea when he saw the SUV begin to move forward instead of complying with orders to get out of the car that the driver would turn to the right. It is very easy for someone sitting comfortably at home looking at slow motion replays of an incident where you know what happened to say the office should not have feared for his life. I can't say that it is impossible that any further evidence could come along and change my mind, but based on what I have seen, I don't blame the office for firing. I blame the person who deliberately disobeyed police orders and then, at a minimum, drove recklessly, putting another officer in reasonable fear for his safety.

Open and shut self-defense. Driving a car directly at someone is enough to put him in reasonable fear for his life, so he's entitled to use deadly force to protect himself. He doesn't have to wait until she actually hits him before shooting. Her intent is irrelevant. This is all true of anyone; not just a cop.

The arguments that she wasn't driving directly at him all founder on the fact that she did hit him. His assessment that he was in danger was demonstrably correct. The idea that he had to consider whether she was only going to hit him "a little bit" is ludicrously unreasonable. Even an off-center hit could knock him down and send him under the wheel.

I haven't read all the comments, but ctrl-F comes up null for "sideways", so let me add a pertinent point.

Even if it's true (as some assert) that she was trying to turn right and away from the officer when she gunned her motor, she was driving on ice. Gunning her motor on ice could make it spin its wheels, could make it go fast in the direction the front wheels are pointed, but could also cause it to skid violently sideways and squash anyone standing next to the car. Gunning the motor of a large heavy car on ice is in fact dangerous to anyone nearby in any direction, all the more so if they are on foot. The ice also makes it much more difficult for the pedestrian to run or jump out of the way.

It saddens me that many here are inflamed by watching videos and are going to conclusions hard. You have to maintain your position or loose face. This is not a beast against the lamb situation. This is a time where an influenced advocate opposed legal authority counter to law and was told that anti ice was justice. It’s sad when adults think that they are in a game where they play secret agent in a real law enforcement situation with life and death consequences. And when government officials give citizens permission to insert themselves into life and death law enforcement situations, that is unconscionable.

The problem comes when the shitheads start putting rocks and fireworks in the snowballs.

When you are in a situation with a mob and the mob starts throwing things at you you do not have time to tell whether or not that is a snowball or a grenade.

People would bitch at regular army grunts who had to deal with rock throwers and people would say the rocks weren't dangerous.

It is bullshit. Police have a dangerous job and if you have a mob of people throwing shit at them you don't have a country anymore. You have a bunch of barbarians with no laws and no order.

Everyone in that crowd should be rounded up and given a choice between death and exile. If they resist shoot them. They can go to a different country if they are going to support illegal aliens and throw rocks at law enforcement trying to enforce immigration laws a super-majority of the country wants enforced.
