Mamdani's notion of "collectivism" as "warmth" finds its way into the WaPo editorial about Venezuela.

I'm reading "Trump’s bold capture of Maduro was a victory for America. What’s next?" by The Editorial Board of The Washington Post. That's the front page headline. Inside it's "Justice in Venezuela/The next challenge is setting the country up for long-term success."

The editorial ends: "For years, Maduro was a symbol of the false warmth of Latin American collectivism. Now he should spend the rest of his life in a humane American prison. His downfall is good news."

Look for more "collectivism" as "warmth" rhetoric. I'm not making a new tag for that. Not yet. I'm sticking with the tags "socialism" and "hotness." How absurd is that?

Anyway, the WaPo editors seem rather positive about Trump's action in Venezuela. The mood at The New York Times is different: "Trump’s Attack on Venezuela Is Illegal and Unwise." It ends:

"We will hold out hope that the current crisis will end less badly than we expect. We fear that the result of Mr. Trump’s adventurism is increased suffering for Venezuelans, rising regional instability and lasting damage for America’s interests around the world. We know that Mr. Trump’s warmongering violates the law."

The commenters at WaPo are irked. They're saying things like "Was this written by the Washington Post Editorial Board or by the White House Ministry of Propaganda?" And: "Not a word in this entire pro-Trump screed about international law or the United States constitution. A new low for a newspaper that once took down a president for abusing his powers. Really shameful." Lots of subscriptions getting cancelled... purportedly.

Just 24 years after the first missile hit (in the form of an aircraft full of passengers) New York was on January 1, 2026 taken over by Muslim communists.

The putative American governor of the state of New York has promised to light up the rebuilt World Trade Center in green in celebration of some unholy Muslim holiday upcoming.

Trump needs to take the communists out of our country and not just Venezuela.

Yes, he abused his powers by ending the war in Viet Nam and normalizing relations with China. Both big neocon no-nos.

These "international laws" the Democrats speak of in the throes of their withdrawal symptoms ... which of my elected representatives voted for these laws? I'd like to have a word with that person.

If the NYTimes wrote about Mamdani's ascendancy to power and radical policies as they do about Trump they would be closer to the truth. ...

Reminds me that Bishop Barron slammed Mamdani's warmth line. Hard. Bold thing to do when his new boss is a liberation theologian.

Collective farms never go bankrupt. People on collective farms never get foreclosed and evicted like poor Okies like Tom Joad. People sometimes starve to death on collective farms, but it's the warm, embracing death of collectivism, not the lonely, alienating death of capitalism. So many people fail to see this simple truth.........I don't know how this will turn out. It turned out okay for Panama. For Iraq and Libya not so much. I don't think Latin America is anywhere near as crazy as the Middle East, but who knows.

Paradoxically, the only successful revolutions in the liberal mind are the failed ones. Allende would have delivered peace and prosperity to Chile. Lumumba would have made the Congo a garden spot. That crackpot in Iran would have truly advanced the interests of the Iranian people........If only that Bay of Pigs thing had been successful, Castro would be remembered as the unfulfilled saviour of Latin America.

I think we should all hold our horses until Judge Boasberg decides whether or not to arrest Trump for the crimes alleged by the New York Times.

The legitimate President of Venezuela is Edmundo González Urrutia. If you’re counting votes instead of gun barrels he won by a landslide in 2024, and he is recognized as the legal President of his country by most non-autocratic governments, including the US.

Maduro and his wife were indicted in the Southern District of New York, which comes across to me, at least, as a hotbed of TDS. Clearly the optimal strategy is to slow-walk the trial while getting Edmundo González installed in the Palacio de Miraflores, backed up the US military until Maduro’s thugs have been sufficiently suppressed. And then once whichever TDS-afflicted judge releases Madura and spouse from custody his deportation to Venezuela will not result in his bring able to resume his dictatorship.

Guy who thinks he can arrest Benjamin Netanyahu also thinks it’s bad to arrest foreign leaders.

Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
@NYCMayor
I was briefed this morning on the U.S. military capture of Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro and his wife, as well as their planned imprisonment in federal custody here in New York City.

Unilaterally attacking a sovereign nation is an act of war and a violation of federal and international law.

This blatant pursuit of regime change doesn’t just affect those abroad, it directly impacts New Yorkers, including tens of thousands of Venezuelans who call this city home. My focus is their safety and the safety of every New Yorker, and my administration will continue to monitor the situation and issue relevant guidance.

But lets get real. 'muricans love to be the world's nanny and policeman, no matter how many times they get burned. If next year we're bogged in South America big muddy - look for the Foriegn policy geniuses to tell we can't leave because...blahdeblah.

I don't know much about Flo & Eddie (of the Turtles?), but I remember this song from the mid-1970s. I suppose it was written as a cynical lefty screed, but the above closing verse reminded me of Charlie Kirk and his message of procreation.

Keep It Warm

Write another song for the money
Something they can sing, not so funny
Money in the bank to keep us warm
Stick another grape in the juicer
Or fill your guts with grease and get looser
You are what you eat, so eat it warm

Roll another joint for the Gipper
Get the Gipper high, he gets hipper
Stick it in his mouth and keep him warm

Elect another jerk to the White House
Gracie Slick is losing her Dormouse
Take her off the streets and keep her warm
Fight another war if they make you
Squeal on a friend or they'll take you
The future's in your lap, so keep it warm

Warm, here in your arms
Safe from all harm, where I belong
Warm, cozy and calm
Another dawn, together warm

My woodie's broken down by the beach now
And TM's gotten far out of reach now
Tell the Mahareesh to keep it warm
(We're picking up good vibrations)
And George is suing Paul, suing Ringo
And immigration wants John and Yoko
All they need is love to keep them warm

Kill another whale with your power
Shoot a bunch of kids from a tower
Snipe them in their cars, blood keeps them warm
Or make a better world from the old one
Make yourself a baby and hold one
Hold her in your arms and keep her warm
Keep her warm

Kate Andrews from The Spectator
Dominic Pino from National Review
Carine Hajjar from the Boston Globe editorial board

The current Mayor of New York is both a communist and a Muslim. He has taken over the city and is now issuing press releases suggesting that our President be arrested.

Rudy Guiliaini, an American who once governed New York City during the initial phases of the Muslim War when the missiles (airplanes packed people) hit the World Trade Center and our Pentagon, is now arrested, destitute, bankrupted and defeated.

Muslims defeated the United States in these battles, and have captured New York a prize.

Donald Trump should invade.

Jeff Bezos is part of the problem of US citizens acting on behalf of foreign governments.

This is untrue and the people who wrote it don't believe it to be true. This is just what the people who wrote it believe is a persuasive argument that will get readers to believe the conclusion that Trump's arrest of Maduro and his wife was bad. What really happened in the minds of the people who wrote this was: 1) Maduro is a strong-arm leftist, 2) that makes him feel like he is on our team, 3) our team losing feels bad, 4) we need to get as many other people as possible to also feel like this is bad and say it is bad, 5) we need to come up with more socially acceptable arguments for why Maduro's arrest is bad so that others will feel it is bad or that others will have the necessary permission structure to say that it is bad publicly.

Mike (MJB Wolf) said...

Don't you just admire leftist's incredible ability to strike revolutionary poses while mouthing ultra-conventional phrases like "rule of law" and simultaneously being 100% reactionary to every single thing Trump does? That ability to inhabit a dichotomous space between "international law" (there truly is no such thing) and chaos while pointing accusatory fingers at the only president in my life who scrupulously follows our Constitutional order is truly impressive, but alas highly indicative of widespread mental illness on the left.

Sad!

2: Nothing in the US Constitution prohibited this. Congress doesn't need to be informed before things happen, and until Dems top leaking Congress will NOT be informed before important things happen.
3: Hey Dems: if you want to be notified ahead of time, you need to establish credibility that you will expel and punish anyone who leaks. So start by expelling Ilhan Omar
4: Apparently Russia had "guaranteed" Venezuela's "safety", and China actually had a delegation in Venezuela to negotiate such an agreement

Trump certainly has plenty of opportunity to fuck this up, but so far, so good
