The NYT puzzles over the Nick Shirley video.

I'm reading "An Intense White House Response From a Single Viral Video/A video purporting to expose extensive fraud at child care centers in Minnesota shows the relationship between the Trump administration and self-described citizen journalists" (NYT).
A 43-minute video posted online in the past week, purporting to expose extensive fraud at Somali-run child care centers in Minnesota, has been viewed by millions of people. It has also set off a series of events that show the symbiotic relationship between the Trump administration and self-described citizen journalists.
It was posted to X and YouTube the day after Christmas by Nick Shirley, a 23-year-old who has made a name for himself in the past two years by producing viral content that aligns with MAGA policies. In the video, Mr. Shirley is accompanied by a man identified only as David, who claims to have uncovered fraud worse than “anywhere else ever in history.”

Specifically, the man says he has identified dozens of child care and autism centers receiving millions of dollars in state funding without caring for any children. The New York Times could not verify the claims made in the video. Mainstream news sites have reported on cases of social services fraud in Minnesota for years, including a 2,200-word article in The Times last month. But Mr. Shirley’s video hit a nerve....

Could not verify.... That ought to mean that the New York Times, mobilizing its dominating journalism power and skill, could not figure anything out? What were Shirley's "claims," anyway? I've been holding back from talking about Shirley's viral video because it was in the style of a "Daily Show" comedy segment. Yes, it's a scintillating contrast to formal, professional journalism, but what do we do with it? Laugh? Feel confirmed in our pre-existing cynicism? Wait for professional journalism to take the viral video as an assignment and mount an instant full-scale investigation and deliver a sober account?

Equipped with little more than iPhones, Mr. Shirley and other right-wing YouTubers and livestreamers zigzag around the country — and overseas — in search of politically charged footage. In many cases, these digital activists pick up on themes that have circulated for months, or even years, but still generate online outrage and action from a government primed to jump into the fray....

That's got to be so annoying to mainstream media. But isn't it filling a gap mainstream media leaves open by failing to cover stories that hurt Democrats?

Mr. Shirley’s latest video appears to have been filmed on Dec. 17 in and around Minneapolis, where he knocks on the doors of numerous child care and autism centers. In some cases, there is no answer. When someone does open up, Mr. Shirley demands to see whether there are children inside but is never shown any.

At each stop, Mr. Shirley, citing state billing records, announces that the operation is fraudulent because he does not see any children. All told, he claims to have personally uncovered $110 million in fraud...
According to the state’s Department of Children, Youth and Families, one of the locations Mr. Shirley visited, Mako Childcare Center, has been out of business for three years. Another location, Quality Learning Center, got particular attention because Mr. Shirley noticed that a sign over its door misspelled “Learning” as “Learing.”... “We don’t know if children were or were not present at the time the video was taken,” the Department of Children, Youth and Families said in a statement regarding the video. “When our licensers have conducted visits to the buildings,” it added, “there have been children present.”...

To repeat what I put in boldface above, "The New York Times could not verify the claims made in the video." But what did the NYT do in this effort to verify? Did it merely speak to some unnamed person at the state’s Department of Children, Youth and Families? Those who have made Shirley's video viral seem inclined to think the state officials are corrupt, so you've got to do more than just ask them. Sniff all you want at "self-described citizen journalists," but what have you professional journalists done? You "could not verify the claims"?

But there was that 2,200-word article in The Times last month. It's titled, "How Fraud Swamped Minnesota’s Social Services System on Tim Walz’s Watch/Prosecutors say members of the Somali diaspora, a group with growing political power, were largely responsible. President Trump has drawn national attention to the scandal amid his crackdown on immigration."

We need a lot more of that sort of thing.

I can't help suspecting that the NYT is only covering this story enough to cover its own ass after the story breaks elsewhere. Take the lead in ferreting out corruption or the "self-described citizen journalists" will be forever forcing you to play catch up.

AND: If "Fraud Swamped Minnesota’s Social Services System on Tim Walz’s Watch," why did you only tell us that in November 2025 — a year after this apparently awful governor was vying for the vice presidency? Why was Kamala Harris able to choose him as the person who deserved to be, as they say, a heartbeat away from the presidency?

NY Post reports:

A Somali-run day care in Minneapolis is claiming somebody broke in and stole “important documents,” but cops say the facility didn’t report anything was actually taken.

He said the alleged prowler stole “important documentation” including children’s enrollment information, employee documentation and checkbooks.

However “no loss was reported to officers,” according to a preliminary report by the Minneapolis Police Department.

So- the CYA effort has ramped up to "The dog ate my homework" level already.

This story seems to be trending remarkably like voting fraud allegation stories in recent elections:

"Of course there was none, and don't you dare look for any. Nothing to see here, move along."

I can already predict what one of next stories in the mainstream press is going to be- "Children Are Pulled Out Of Daycare Because Of False Allegations Of Fraud."

Who did the debunking? Media: "Shut up, racist."

Not sure what Bondi meant when she said the file was on her desk?
In any case - it doesn't change the fact that Dems are in there up to their hot tube eyeballs. Stacy the Dem texted Jeffrey and Jeffrey Epstein texted her back - and told her what to say at a hearing where they were tying to "get Trump"
Epstein hated Trump.

I hate to say that this is entertaining, since it's actually frustrating, but listening to our lefties denigrating Shirley for not being a "real journalist" while asking nothing of the New York Times - it's pretty entertaining.

They don't want to talk about fraud but they have to say *something*. Squirrel!

The amazing thing, really, is that the NYT thinks this is a Trump-and-the-media story. Not a "the-worthless-scum-we-drug-into-your-country-by- the-millions-are-robbing-you-blind-with-our-enthusiastic-assistance" story.

After scrolling through these comments it seems there a lot of you who haven't bothered to watch the 42 minute video with Nick Shirley and with the man only identified as "David." If so, you might change your mind about what you have said. Also, spend some time on X and you might find there are now more videos on potential day care fraud in Seattle and Columbus, OH, which also have significant Somali populations. While everyone should have been aware of the Feeding Our Future fraud - Powelineblog has covered it from the beginning in 2022 - there also appears to be fraud involving medical patient transportation services and autism support services. The autism has been reported to have gone from about $3M/yr in 2018 in MN to almost $400M/yr recently.

Imagine if the govt agencies actually spent time serving people instead of stealing money and wasting resources
Crazy right

@Jamie: Whatever position the NYT takes is the DNC's so how could anyone question their authoritah! They're stalling until Tim tells them his ducks are all lined up. Also letting the hundreds of MN government employees who'd like to help the feds know what the consequences of that might be.

The best reporting on the Minnesota fraud story is from a month ago. Outlets like FOX 9 have been uncovering these schemes since 2013. If you care, get the basics right first.

Mountainman, invoking PowerLine doesn’t exactly give credence to your argument.

I haven’t passed judgment one way or the other of Shirley’s findings but him being a right wing YouTube influencer hitting the big times doesn’t impress me much.

Yes, I could go watch the 42 minute documentary but I’ve seen this movie before with election deniers, 2000 Mules, peaceful protesters and more. The trail always goes back to influencers without evidence.

Even above on Floyd, I’m reading to just go check out the Chicago Boyz only to find them linking to FloppingAces. That scraping the bottom of the propaganda barrel.

Just go read it, watch the clip, listen to this guy. It reminds me of the children’s animated movie Jungle Book where Kaa the boa snake asks his victims to glaze into his eyes while he wraps them in his coils.

I’ll wait for the actual evidence which rarely surfaces.

I don't know what everyone is getting so hysterical. I am certain that Pam Bondi will get to the bottom of this just like she did with the Epstein files.

That is why the anger is so high.

No matter who we vote for nothing ever happens.

If they don't start mass deportations soon and they don't start arresting traitors then fuck Trump. Bondi should have been fired months ago. Trump is too busy glazing Netanyahu's ass to do what he said he was going to do. We are still sending money to Ukraine.

It is bullshit. We are tired of paying for Kash Patel's private jet to his girlfriend's podcast career. Patel is a joke. I was promised a museum in DC at the FBI building and FBI agents actually doing their jobs.

You should be deported with your Somali allies to somalia when they get denaturalized and sent back.

Achilles, you’re stepping into some deep doo-doo here.

“ You should be deported with your Somali allies to somalia when they get denaturalized and sent back.”

So, white American born citizens guilty of fraud (to what extent we do not know) should be denaturalized and deported? Because either the punishment is contingent on the crime or on who you are.

I just knew I could find a gullible to take that bate and you just always seem to be the low hanging fruit.

Notice RJW goes for a two-for. First he besmirches Power Line, who has been reporting on this for years. Then he discredits Shirley for being *gasp* a right winger. Notice he presents zero facts - his specialty.

You are a traitor Chuck.

You took money from US taxpayers and gave it to Somalians who you naturalized so they would vote for democrats.

You also help them attack ICE agents and burn American flags.

Some would say exile is too good for traitors. I choose to be benevolent and let you and your friends go elsewhere so you can't steal from us anymore.

Minnesota law requires all licensed daycares to have essentially full time 720p video recordings of what is going on. So our leftists should easily be able to prove that there is no fraud here, right? Just post the videos of happy children in the day cares.

Until Inga, Kak, Chuck, etc. post the easily obtainable proof that surely must exist if their claims that this is just a GOP hit job... why don't we trust the video? Leftists like Chuck and Inga and KaK are screaming "it's not fraud!" then they should be able to prove it rather than their usual "Shoot the messenger."

Speaking of shooting the messenger, I'm sure Chuck, Inga, and the rest are fully on board with leftist reporters who are calling for Somalis to shoot and kill anyone who dares check on their fraudulent businesses/child care/ etc. "Exercise your second amendment by killing anyone who questions you!" is the new leftist rallying call. And Democrats in Washington state are scrambling to pass a law saying it's illegal to check on child care businesses to see if they, you know, exist. Nothing at all suspicious about that! Right Chuck/Inga/Kak? You support killing people who investigate your fraudulent Somali people? Funny how leftists don't want young women to be able to defend against rapists with a gun but they want Somalis to kill anyone who investigates them.....

Achillies, you’re evading the basic question that you opened the door to. Do we denationalize and deport all fraud offenders going forward or is that contingent on how the outrage machine has exasperated the offense?

Is it the crime or who committed the crime or even, how bad the outrage machine told you the crime was?

No, me being a liar or treasonous or whatever you have holstered is not an intellectually sound response. You either have a morally and ethically sound standing on the issue or you don’t. From every response you’ve given, you don’t.

"This is an easy story to confirm or debunk"

Maybe not now, since they know they've been caught. They can take a few $thousand of those $billions and pass them around to some Somali parents to take their kids to those centers for the cameras.

Ronald J. Ward said...

Well Yancey, not so much. My general logout time is around the 8PM area, give or take. Grandkids over for Uno and Domino Train on the Eve kinda throws that out window.

I get the obsession thing but it seems to fit you better than me.

Yancey Ward said...

James K., they might try that but it won't work- not nearly enough kids to cover all the centers. And if Vance is right about Minnesota law (see above), then the videos to debunk the story would already exist and, if they existed, they would have already been used to debunk the story.

Yancey Ward said...

Order the child care centers to provide the video records they are required by law to have. When they can't, but they've already taken money from the government for "services provided", start sending the people responsible to prison.

OMG, it took only minutes for the resident nutjobs here (and the Lyin' Legacy Media) to sprint to the wrong side of another 80-20 issue. We're talking billions of dollars here and reports are trickling in of the same fraud in Philadelphia and elsewhere. I watched a video on X last night where the filmer went to the listed address of one of these daycare centers and it was a mansion! Quelle surprise! Also REAL news stories on social media are uncovering similar fraud with home health aide services. When crimes are committed, the Lefty Losers scream "MAGA" and that makes it all right in their eyes. Evil, pitiful people.

Once again proving that old adage, when rampant Democrat malfeasance has been identified beyond any reasonable doubt, all of the stories will be about the Republican's reaction, with special focus segments on how unreasonable they all are for noticing.

Meanwhile the Republican Congress, after hamming it up being 'surprised, shocked, and outraged', will do their best to appear busy ,while they're quietly opening the valve stems off-scene to let the air out and deflate the issue slowly, lest the public anger builds and they have to actually do something about it.

So they're violating the law
