What was that "Incident That Prompted Trump to Ban EpsteinFrom Mar-a-Lago's Spa"?

"Mar-a-Lago sent an 18-year-old spa worker on a house call to Jeffrey Epstein in 2003. She complained to her bosses that Epstein pressured her for sex," The Wall Street Journal reports.
A manager sent Trump a fax relaying the employee's allegations and urged him to ban Epstein, some of the former employees said. Trump said it was a good letter and said to kick him out. The beautician disclosed the house call to the club's human resources team, one of the former employees said. The incident wasn't reported to Palm Beach police, according to the former employees and police. The department didn't begin investigating Epstein until two years later, when a parent told them Epstein molested a 14-year-old girl from a local high school. Epstein was arrested in 2006 after several underage teens told police he paid them for sex....

Anyone who doesn’t think Trump at the time knew or strongly suspected that Epstein was involved with underage girls- and yet failed to report him - has an incurable case of TDS.

Funny how all the private personal remembrances of Trump interactions point toward a sense of decency, while the public actions of Democrat hero figures stink to high heaven.

Pretty funny, pointing to a case involving Epstein hitting on an 18 year old that was acted on decisively by management as being an indication of TDS. Great hard-hitting call, there, impressive.

Malicious Observance

And why is this news and not Clinton? Don’t say, well because Trump is President. The story here is 2 decades old, which is to say not news. Years later, Hillary would be SecState and her husband was hanging with Epstein, who then was known to federal authorities for having sexual relations with underage women. Still not “new”, but at least a decade newer for news coverage.

FYI, that story was the top story in the digital edition this morning. Minnesota story is about Trump reacting to "alleged" fraud, buried in the middle of the paper.

Yes, horrible things happened. Those responsible should be punished and the victims compensated (to the extent that this is possible), but people are getting tired of the reportage. It has a "The walls are closing in on Trump now" quality. The walls never did close in on Trump.

What the media isn't looking at are Epstein's connections to intelligence agencies. We aren't going to find out about what he was doing for the spy agencies from either the government or the mainstream media, so every story brings to mind the things they don't tell us rather than what they want us to believe.

The WSJ is smart for attempting to appear to be fair. The rest of the corporate media still thinks they have the power to cover this and Minnesota fraud with a pillow until it stops breathing. I get that, but Epstein didn't get away with being corrupt and sleazy. He died in prison.

Of all the injustices that have ever occurred and that still occur, I just don't see why Epstein, in particular, is the case that people seem most obsessed with. There's so much resentment toward Epstein that it's not enough for people that he died in prison, they want to investigate anyone who was ever associated with him based on the possibility those people were guilty of similar crimes.

As for who "protected" him, I'm open to the possibility that he avoided harsher treatment than he at first received through the strategic utilization of money, blackmail, and/or and connections to intelligence agencies. OK, so what? Is that worse than someone who commits a series of violent crimes and gets lenient treatment because he's black? I would say the latter phenomenon is far more common and far more offensive to our societal values.

So, looks to me like it was correctly handled. "Pressured", unless it involved force or threats, would at MOST be "solicitation for prostitution." The beautician got what she wanted:
1; Her bosses backed her up, told her she did theirhgt thing by refusing
2: Her bosses booted Epstein, showing that they really DID back her up
3: She'd never have to go to his place again

I doubt she wanted to be filing a complaint with the police, I doubt the police wanted that kind of complaint filed.

2: What was the crime? "He asked her for sex"? News flash: that's not a crime
"He offered her money for sex"?: Well, if you have it on video you might get a "solicitation for prostitution" charge. Maybe.

"I invited her to go to Maui with me for a week, all expenses paid." All of a sudden, that's not prostitution.

But please, tell us exactly what law, or even sane moral code, would require Trump to "report him to the police" for this behavior.

Trump booting him from Mar-a Lago. That's a bigger "gfine" than anything Epstein would have faced for a "solicitation of prostitution" charge, even if he was convicted.

@Dense snd Duplicitous Driver, my assumption is that Trump mentioned he was going up to DC and Epstein said he was going up too in his own private jet, and did Trump want a lift This being cheaper than flying up in his own Boeing 757, and that Epstein’s indictment for pedophilia was in the future, Trump would have readily accepted. 2: There's lots of ways to push the line that aren't illegal

Ann Althouse said...

"@Althouse, from where did you get the information that the young woman was a masseuse? Is she not described as a beautician?"

That was the impression — maybe wrong — that I got from this text:

"Jeffrey Epstein wasn't just a frequent visitor to Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago club in the late 1990s and early 2000s. The club was also sending spa employees -- usually young women -- to Epstein's nearby mansion for massages, manicures and other spa services, according to former Mar-a-Lago and Epstein employees. The house calls went on for years, even as spa employees warned each other about Epstein, who was known among staff for being sexually suggestive and exposing himself during the appointments, according to the former Mar-a-Lago employees.... Epstein had an account at the spa where his companion, Ghislaine Maxwell, booked appointments on his behalf.... Employees sent on house calls, like the 18-year-old beautician, were typically licensed by the state boards of cosmetology or massage therapy."

I'm influenced by knowing E's predilection for massages, but you're right that she's referred to repeatedly as a beautician.

I asked Grok, Would the word "beautician," applied to a spa employee, ever include someone who gave massages?

Answer: "Yes, the word "beautician" can sometimes include someone who gives massages, particularly in a spa context, but it depends on the region, specific licensing, historical usage, and how broadly the term is applied. The core meaning of "beautician" (especially in American English) is a person who provides cosmetic/beauty treatments focused on hair, skin, and nails — such as hairstyling, facials, makeup, manicures/pedicures, and waxing. Many standard dictionary definitions (e.g., Merriam-Webster, Cambridge, Longman) describe it as someone who gives beauty treatments to skin, hair, etc., without explicitly mentioning full-body massage. However, in practice — especially in some legal/regulatory contexts and older or broader usage — the term has occasionally encompassed massage as part of beauty culture...."

Ann Althouse said...

Looking more deeply into the topic: A beautician doing a facial might do a face massage and massage is a standard part of a luxury manicure or a pedicure.

Employers do have a legal duty to police third-party sexual harassment of the employees by customers.

And Trump did so, apparently quite admirably. Seriously, what more do you want?
1: Employee comes back, tells her manager "he pressured me for sex"
2: Manager faxes the boss (Trump), says this happened, have to do something about it
3: Trump faxes back "shitcan the asshole"

What more do you want? Give exact, precise, details, of what you want. "Go to the police?" With what evidence? Did the employee want that? Or was she happy with what Trump did?

Ann Althouse said...

And when doing a shampoo, a luxury place will include a scalp massage and I think a neck/shoulder massage is often included.

Ann Althouse said...

"Licensed [Florida] cosmetologists (and facial specialists) can perform scalp massage as part of facials or hair treatments, and neck massage is explicitly allowed under the scope of practice (limited to face, scalp, neck, hands, and feet for aesthetic purposes — not therapeutic full-body massage, which requires a separate massage therapy license under Chapter 480). So in a Florida spa, a beautician/cosmetologist providing a shampoo service could legally include scalp and neck/shoulder massage as long as it's kept within those aesthetic boundaries (e.g., light manipulation with products, not deep tissue work for medical benefit). Many luxury spas combine these seamlessly under cosmetology services."

Readering said...

How does this story compare with what Trump has said about Epstein membership or being barred from the resort?

Big Mike said...

@Althouse, here’s what a different AI -/ the one provided by Google — has to say:

“The types of massages a beautician is permitted to perform are strictly regulated by state licensing boards and are limited to specific areas of the body as part of a beauty treatment.

During Hair Services: Beauticians are allowed to perform scalp and neck massages as part of shampooing or other hair treatments.

During Nail Services: Hand, arm, foot, and lower leg massages are standard components of manicures and pedicures.

During Skin Care Services (Facials): Facial specialists (estheticians) and cosmetologists can perform massages on the face, neck, and décolleté to promote skin health and relaxation.”

GoogleAI goes on to state that beauticians are explicitly barred from performing full body and/or deep tissue massages.
