"Police Say Jewish Community Targeted in Deadly Sydney Attack/Two people were in custody after the shooting at Australia’s best-known beach during a Jewish event."

The NYT reports.

"The rare mass shooting sent crowds scattering on Australia’s best-known beach.... Shootings are rare in Australia, a country with one of the lowest gun-related death rates in the developed world."

One shooter dead, one in police custody. Why no names? I'm guessing that we know why. Time will tell.

Well, I popped up another tab to see what Mr. Google knows. Naveed Akram. No surprise there.

The intifada has been globalized by immigration. It used to be that Jews were only killed in Israel, well, at least after the unpleasantness in Germany. Intifada, in Arabic, means the shaking off, I guess like shaking off fleas. That sounds like the Arab viewpoint.

Not sure what this has to do with gun control. Australia gun death fatality rate dropped 70% after stricter gun laws enacted in the 1990s. Is the point that absent tough gun laws a lot of the beach goers would have been armed? Seems unlikely.

Humperdink said...

“Not sure what this has to do with gun control.”

Really? Gun control was supposed to prevent this crap. Total, 100% gun control means zero guns on the street, which the Aussies have. Tell me how bad guys could possibly get a firearm. Oh, they can still get them? Who knew?

When you chant to globalize the intifada, this is what it means. And soon, it'll be coming at others of us. There is much to say about this, but frankly, anyone discussing 'gun control' after this horror is at a level of naiveté that does not even grant entrance into this discussion. Take the social science coffee shop debates elsewhere.
Today, around Western nations, Jews have to have armed security to celebrate our holidays. To go to a party. To attend any event that will knowingly host other Jews. To meet with friends at Bondi Beach. And the world just keeps on pretending that this is OK.

It is not. And honestly, I'd love to scan the other posts today, but it's hard for me to look at David Sedaris as anything but trite when I see what is going on. And how wary I have to be traveling or attending things these days. And yes...I will be armed. I'm an American, after all.

Was listening to the reporting and analysis on GB News this morning. Living Treasure Michael Portillo pointed out that Oz enacted their gun laws with bipartisan support immediately after another mass shooting. He asked his guests if this incident would spur another big drastic legislative package. Everyone kind of danced around the unspoken assumption that such legislation would have to be either strict immigration control or stricter control of the law-abiding population. (how you could achieve the latter, I don't know - Oz has become pretty damn authoritarian. But I'm sure some MPs have legislation ready to go!)

The NSW Police Commissioner, during his presser, stated inter alia that riot squads were being deployed to keep everyone safe. Hmm. What sorts of riots was he expecting? Ones like the October 8 demonstrations, blaming the Jews for their own deaths? Or anti-terrorist riots like in Britain after Southport? CC, JSM

Whites are becoming a minority in Austrailia. I'm sure Bill Maher is happy.

RCOCEAN II said...

Austrailia used to be picky over immigrants. No doubt some Muslim is behind the attack. Consequence of prior actions.

Tom T. said...

Was there no security or police presence at a large Hanukkah event? Shameful neglect by the Aussie authorities if so. The hero of the day was an unarmed bystander who tackled one of the gunmen. Moreover, this hero is himself Muslim. Would be great to see the Muslim community start to actively oppose this kind of terror.

john mosby said...

The Australian newspaper reports one of the deaths is a Holocaust survivor. From Ukraine.

Imagine being a 90 yo Southern black guy, maybe the son and definitely the grandson of slaves, and you get lynched by the Klan in 2025. What would be going thru your mind? “I was right - you can’t trust these white mothafuckas.” Crockett and Reid would be echoing it from their platforms.

Nobody’s going to do that for this guy. CC, JSM

Original Mike said...

Pretty much the whole thing on video here. You don't see anyone shot except one of the terrorists, and that from a long distance.

Fucking animals.

After the gunmen are subdued, the police have a hard time controlling the crowd.

Robert Marshall said...

For a while, the NYT published online the name of one of the shooters, Naveed Akram. Now, their "live update" page has no names, no discussion of who was doing the intifada at Bondi. Their "what we know" page says the names have not been released, but that's a lie.

What may be a surprising revelation: the name of the bystander who tackled and disarmed one of the shooters was Ahmed Ahmed, a local fruit-stand vendor. Nice work, Ahmed!

Yancey Ward said...

Looks like Australia needs to ban gun ownership.

Yancey Ward said...

Jim53IQ,

Since the majority of gun fatalities are suicides in the U.S. one can guess that the ratio is even higher Australia simply based on demographics of suicide. Wanna bet that 70% drop was fewer suicides by firearm and replaced by a corresponding rise in suicides by other means?

TobyTucker said...

Seeing as the linked article fails to say anything at all about the identity of the gunmen, you know for sure they weren't native Australians, just like when a story about a politician involved in a scandal and his/her party affiliation isn't identified you knew it was a Democrat.
FYI - Australia had a big gun confiscation drive after a mass shooting in 1998. As the saying goes, if guns are outlawed, only outlaws will have guns.

Assistant Village Idiot said...

When they emphasise the gun deaths as if "death" is not a sufficient category of its own, it is because they don't want you to think about the overall violent death rate. They want you to think you would be safer if they took guns away.

I worked in mental health including forensic units for over forty years and knew at least two dozen murderers or attempted murderers. Not one of them had used a gun. They used cars, poison, fires, explosives, knives, strangling, drowning, pushing off balconies...plenty of other choices.

Tangential related At least three antisemitic/Islamofascist attacks surfaced globally in the last 24 hours
1) Bondi Beach
2) German police arrested 5 plotting a Christmas Market attack
3) Home of a Jewish family in Redlands CA was attacked.

"Arteaga" is Basque of course, from Vizcaya probably but there are a bunch in Guipuzcoa, but of no specific origin IMHO, as it is rather generic. It means "from the place ot the oaks" or probably "from the oak grove". In Euskara Artea = oak. Given the Basque landscape that is hardly specific.
For Spanish and French names, I like the geneanet.com site as it queries the civil registry (registro civil) going back 150 years or more.

Yes, I am not being ironic when I call Portillo a living treasure. Excellent example of immigrant assimilation. His pic should be in the OED next to the word 'English.'
