"It begins in 1976. Epstein is a teacher at the Dalton School in Manhattan, and he gets invited to a reception at an art gallery, and he goes kind of grudgingly...."

"And at the reception, he bumps into the parent of one of his students who is impressed with his math chops. And the parent suggests that maybe he is wasting his time being a teacher and instead should consider a career in Wall Street. And the parent then introduces Epstein to a guy named Ace Greenberg.... a top executive at Bear Stearns, which is this scrappy Wall Street investment bank. And one of the ways in which it's scrappy is that it is not going to hire Ivy League MBAs. It is looking for what Ace Greenberg likes to call PSDs, which stands for poor, smart, and deeply desirous of being rich. And Epstein goes in to meet Greenberg for a job interview, and Epstein fits the bill. Greenberg is bowled over by the guy's charisma and charm and apparent math prowess and offers him a job. So he arrives at Bear Stearns and he quickly becomes the protege to some of the firm's top executives. One is Greenberg, the guy who hired him, who is so taken with Epstein that he introduces him to his own 20-year-old daughter and they start dating, which affords Epstein something akin to protected status at the firm...."

From today's excellent episode of the NYT "Daily" podcast, "The Origins of Jeffrey Epstein."

So: a scrappy executive enamored of the idea that there are PSDs out there — that's the explanation....

Ace was an intuitive and incredibly smart man. A generational trader on the street. They'd say on the trading floor that he could smell a (losing Trader's) fear at 50 feet.

I think the point is that Epstein had an abundance of that rare intangible called charisma. Ace could sense it, and knew it could be a money-making asset for Bear, Stearns.

Many commenters here probably revile, say, Bill Clinton, and all revile Epstein. But I'm pretty certain that almost all the same commenters, if placed in a social setting, and not steeled by knowing their history, would be totally charmed by them.

Matt Taibbi and his team over at Racket News are doing what I think will be a 5-part story on Epstein, highlighting the elements of the narrative (or the actual history - who can say) that are being glossed over.

Part 1 was about the pedophilia. Taibbi reports, accurately, that Epstein's only conviction was for solicitation, and that the young woman in that trial said under oath that they only had sexual intercourse once, literally on the day before her 18th birthday. He solicited her before that, yes, but only ("only") for massages that were clearly sexual to him (I may be misremembering - there might have been some other sex-adjacent activity, but not intercourse); he would want her in various stages of undress, and he would often pleasure himself during them. But sex - only once.

Taibbi's point is not that Epstein was anything other than a creep, but he does wonder aloud whether the evidence so far is sufficient to label him a "convicted pedophile," as some have done and are doing.

Man. I tried so hard to avoid this story, but it seems there's no way out but through.

Didn’t the headmaster of this school hire Epstein even as he was unqualified, and didn’t this same headmaster write a sci-fi novel full of man-girl explicit scenes, and didn’t he father a son who investigated the “suicide,” and pronounced it to be exactly what they were telling us it was, “as hard as that was to believe.”

Did that make it in?

So where are the big Mossad goods?
What exactly did he achieve for Israel?

He got Bill Clinton and Price Andrew... to partake in the good life on big hot tub island. + others.. and we are not sure who abused the girls? Prince Andrew probably did. How is he a big catch for Israel?
What is the end game? Esp because it looks like he was into controlling young girls with sex - and he got off on it.
Where was the blackmail?
There's more here - or - there might be less.

Matt Taibbi (one of the few, real, investigative journalists left) doesn't think we have any evidence Epstein was providing access to young women to powerful men. Here is an exchange between Matt and a commenter at Matt's Substack:

Sigh. This is exactly the point. We don't know that he was "providing access to young women" to "powerful, mostly married men." There just isn't evidence of this. If you want a justice and journalistic system that just assumes things, go for it. But currently what we have courts for is to determine the provability of crime, and the job of people like me is to point out the (sometimes unpopular) limits of what's known.

Anne Emerson Hall

Matt. Matt. Matt. Providing access to young women to powerful, mostly married men is disturbing. What Michael and you report seems like splitting hairs over what prosecutors were able to charge and prove in south Florida.

@Gerda, et al

Shipwreckedcrew did a deep dive a couple weeks before Tracy and Taibbi's post came out on the Florida plea and Federal NPA deals that Epstein reached regarding solicitation back in 2008, and he came to largely the same conclusion. There just isn't any evidence that Epstein was doing more than paying teenage girls to service him, and him alone. What happened on his island or at his residences in other cases, as I understand it, almost always involved females (at least slightly) over the age of 18. In most cases, even among the solicitations, there appears to have been some degree of consent which makes pressing criminal charges complicated as SWC explains in his post.

Link to Shipwreckedcrew's posting

Yeah, Epstein was creepy sex pest but this appears to be another QAnon Pizzagate.

There's also the contrarian angle. what better way to get clicks reads and publicity then defending someone everyone else is attacking? Or doing a "Those women were asking for it and they're probably lying" substack article or series of tweets.

I have no problem with turning Gaza into a parking lot and rebuilding it into a really nice resort and giving the Palestinian survivors jobs afterwords under an Egyptian occupation force.

Was in graduate school at an Ivy League university in 1980s. Professors hit on every female student, no matter how demure, in plain sight of faculty, administrators, and students. Completely tolerated, even admired, even when faculty member had a wife somewhere in the background.

Post-graduate school, at my 1st corporate posting, work-environment was "management 100% male; secretaries 100% female", with exception of one young Ivy League-grad female, who was propositioned by nearly every single male encountered at office, with exception of Chairman and President.

Think these were commonplace scenarios in 1980s, and for much of 1990s, where a lot of casual sexual harassment was tolerated as expected and mildly amusing male behavior. Trump and Epstein are of this era. Clinton, who weathered several accusations of outright rape, is probably the sexual predator of the Epstein bunch. Trump is the "regular guy", and Epstein probably best described as "Hugh Heffner-aspiring gracious host offering "girlfriend experience" to all his guy pals".

Life-experience varies by age demographic. What was acceptable in 80s and 90s would cause public shaming and career disaster today.

Isn't an ABM radar like Iron Dome aimed up, so that incoming missiles can be intercepted high enough that the blast doesn't hurt anyone and the bits scatter widely? Also something about distinguishing targets against a big open high sky versus a crowded lower sky?

The Pali para-things were lower altitude. Kind of the way helo pilots fly nap-of-the-earth. I doubt any radars were sweeping that low.

But yes, it's not an excuse. The Israelis seemed to have the missile scenario covered, and the onesie-twosie terrorist infiltration covered. A mass poor-man's conventional attack, with multiple simultaneous breaches and battalions worth of motorized forces zipping down the roads - that, they seem not to have considered.

Kind of how they were surprised by the Egyptians using Cairo Fire Department boats to wash away breaches in the sand palisades on the Suez. CC, JSM

Impresses the banker type in the same way, for the same reason.

Nothing to do with Epstein, but it's nice to see Cage in a role that forces him to act like a human being (like the National Treasure movies).

Now, as for Epstein, I was wondering too how much "human trafficking" was involved. Seeing videos of numerous young women willing to sell themselves for a trip to Dubai and demanding "acts of service" (cash) from boyfriends, has made me wonder if they weren't willingly doing this.

Finally, what were these powerful men thinking letting themselves be photographed with young women?

RSM: Thanks for your superior technical knowledge! I can't find a cite for BM-21 max ord that's more specific than "several kilometers." If "several" means 3, than that's 9000 feet in the air. If you're trying to intercept on the way up, it's still over 4000 feet, which is certainly higher than the Pali para-thing, no? CC, JSM

“I suspect pimping and blackmail were sidelines for Epstein, if they were going on at all. There were all of the money shenanigans, and they spiraled into intelligence activities.“
Or it could have been the other way around. According to Mike Benz, one way Epstein might have been drawn into the world of money laundering for clandestine operations was through his mentor, Ace Greenberg, at Bear Stearns. Greenberg set up an account for BCCI - a bank favored by clandestine services - at Bear Stearns. If Epstein worked on any deals involving BCCI (and the New York Times story does not reveal who Epstein’s clients were), that could be how he became involved in the clandestine world. Being a fraudster at heart, additional fraud came naturally to him.

RideSpaceMountain said...

@JSM, most IADS (of which Iron Dome is "a part") these days are technically "horizon-to-horizon", which is specific to their detectors, not the interception systems itself. IOW they see everything, but different parts of the system are intended for different threats and complex programs are used to collate and prioritize threat information to ensure the right system is used for the right threat at the right time. The "time" aspect is critical because of the speeds involved, so ensuring the data is handed off to the appropriate part of the system is absolutely crucial.

I'm sure the system probably saw the threat, but there's a multitude of factors all the way from it was de-prioritized to threat-miscategorized to simply the observers didn't know what they were seeing. Detection is merely half the battle. Using the wrong tool for the appropriate threat can be worse than not detecting at all.

Eva: "What does this have to do with Epstein."

I think maybe the connection is that, while the left tries to find the anti-Trump pony in the poop pile of the Epstein records, we are distracted from real threats like terrorism. Just like the Israeli deep state and Left felt Bibi was a greater threat to their country than Hamas. Or like the Oz deep state and Left think prejudiced Anglo-Celtic Ozzies are a greater threat to their country than terrorists.

Extra flavor provided by the coincidence that Epstein is Jewish and people on both sides of the aisle want that to mean he's some kind of Zionist superspy. CC, JSM

Isn't an ABM radar like Iron Dome aimed up, so that incoming missiles can be intercepted high enough that the blast doesn't hurt anyone and the bits scatter widely? Also something about distinguishing targets against a big open high sky versus a crowded lower sky?

Not like that. Without getting too specific RADAR works like any other EM wave. It goes out it and it comes back when it bounces off of something. You can make them directional but they are going to see everything from horizon to horizon. There is no downside to seeing everything and it doesn't take any extra effort. The only thing that is likely is the arrays were set to a 180 or a 120 degree arc at most facing Gaza to increase gain. But that means they could set it farther back to gain standoff or increase coverage angle.

There are several different layers to the anti missile system. For the systems I worked on they could be used against anything from missiles to planes to helicopters. The limiting factors were speed of the target and "reflectivity" of whatever you were tracking. They would have been able to count dick wrinkles on an idiot on a paraglider.

Somehow they had the entire Iranian leadership command structure mapped out. They knew where every Syrian military leader was. But they didn't know several hundred mouth breathers in Gaza were about to go on a multi minute paraglide trip over a quarter mile demilitarized zone.

I jumped out of airplanes for training for military operations. During the minute or so you are floating down a thought would sometimes creep into your head: "This would be really bad if there were people down there with guns."

If you launch a hundred rockets over a wall and 99 of them get shot down, who thinks it would be a good idea to jump on a paraglider and spend several minutes in the air like that? Maybe the leaders of Gaza wanted to get rid of a bunch of retards and were pleasantly surprised when they didn't get annihilated?

One more time, Epstein worked with ALL of the intelligence agencies. Saudi, Israeli, US, British and any other ones he could launder money for (so the supposition goes). It’s important because the intelligence agencies are evolving into a super government dictating to our elected leaders what they can and cannot do. We’ve seen this with our CIA and the Russian collusion hoax. We’ve seen this with the 2020 election. What cuold be more important than analyzing how they work together

Excellent. I have not thought of this. Trump and his direct reports could make Epstein into a case study of IC shenanigans. Why hasn't he? I don't think it's because he, Grenell, Tulsi, Bondi, etc, are all somehow compromised. I don't think it's because the deep IC have convinced them that bringing down the whole system would be worse than any possible gain from exposing its malfunctions.

It's possible that the political optics are just too bad, what with the sex trafficking and all, and would drown out any object lesson.

It's also possible that Trump's pirate-ship crew are having a series of monumental ass-chewings with the professional staff, demanding to be shown exactly how a sex trafficker was allowed to operate for so long, what exactly was so fucking important on a strategic level that could possibly justify this crap, what other colossal upside-down goat fucks are still going on, etc. Those ass-chewings would not leak out, because none of the leaker class would benefit.

We'll find out in 50 years, I guess. CC, JSM

The only time in 30 years my dad was more or less in combat, in '69, he took some smaller Navy craft up the Mekong in the back of his amphibious LSD, which has a flap in the back for small vessels or vehicles to go up the hollow middle of the ship. I've long wondered if John Kerry's swift boat was among them, maybe long after he cashed in his 3 Purple Hearts. They were fired upon from the shore. In '70, the Navy gave Dad a Bronze Star for not screwing up, he said, and a Captain's fourth bar.
