At the New Year's Eve party at Althouse...

... you can talk about your memories of 2025 and plans for 2026.

Me, I'll almost surely be asleep, but I can see that it's already 2026 in London. In 5 minutes, it will turn midnight in Ittoqqortoormiit, Greenland. That's good enough for me!

And here's today's sunrise, which I did dare to go out to see:

Clyde's Top 15 Favorite "New" Songs of 2025 - Part 16 of 16
#1 - L.E.O. - "Don't Let It Go" - Alpacas Orgling (2006)

And so, we reach the end of 2025 and this countdown. This final song was another of the ones that I found via Susan's ELOish playlist. As I said, I stretched the rules a bit at #5 to include a song by Bleu as a solo artist. I hope that you enjoy this song as much as I did this year. Alpacas Orgling is a great album and worth a listen.

Per Wikipedia:
"L.E.O. is a 2006 project by Boston musician Bleu and collaborators which produced Alpacas Orgling, a 2006 album of original songs similar in style to Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), the Traveling Wilburys, and 1970s AM radio pop music.
"In 2002 Bleu was chatting with the former frontman of Semisonic, Dan Wilson. Wilson retold details from producer Rick Rubin about Jeff Lynne's studio methods and techniques. Bleu, interested in these techniques and ELO in general] wanted to make songs similar to Jeff Lynne using his studio methods for fun. Gradually those songs would develop into the album Alpacas Orgling. Mike Viola joined the project after an onstage cover of ELO's "Telephone Line" by Bleu and Viola at the Paradise Lounge in Boston.

"The name "L.E.O." is based on the letters in "ELO". However, according to Bleu, the letters in L.E.O. could stand for "Little Electric Operas", or "Little E-mail Operas"

"Their debut album, Alpacas Orgling, features major contributions from Matt Mahaffey of Self, Andy Sturmer of Jellyfish, Hanson, Mike Viola, and members of Chicago. The album was remotely recorded by the musicians over the course of 4 years in 12 different studios. The album's name is an acknowledgement of alpaca farmer and Extreme's bassist Pat Badger, who previously gave Bleu a place to live."

Clyde's Top 15 Favorite "New" Songs of 2025
Bonus Song - L.E.O. - "Ya Had Me Goin'" - L.E.O. (2006)

This was my other possible choice for favorite song of the year, and it was pretty close. If you like these songs, seek out the whole album, which I highly recommend. And if you listen to the full Alpacas Orgling playlist on YouTube, it has a demo cover version of ELO's "Don't Bring Me Down."

If you want to listen to the Deluxe version of my 2025 playlist (50 songs, about 3-1/2 hours), here it is. It has my Top 15 songs, 5 honorable mentions, 11 bonus songs and 19 others that I like that were either barely mentioned in passing or not at all. If you are an Amazon Music subscriber, log in to listen to it in order. If you aren’t, you can listen but it will be shuffled and you won’t be able to skip to the next song. This is my definitive cut of my favorite music from 2025.

As an alternative, here is the Basic version of my playlist. It is just my Top 15 plus the 5 honorable mentions, without all of the bonus material. This one runs an hour and 24 minutes. Same caveats apply as do for the Deluxe version, if you are not an Amazon Music subscriber.

Here's what I want for 2026.

Most of the subsidies going to "Legal Aid" projects are given to left wing NGOs fighting to prevent squatters from being evicted, or criminals of favored skin colors from suffering the consequences of their crimes, or filing Potemkin lawsuits against the EPA that lead to massive settlements, with the connivance of the government-worker scum who are supposed to be looking out for the taxpayer but are actually termites working for the other side.

Let's rip away 100% of their funding, and instead use it to subsidize Qui Tam actions against the day-care swindlers, vote harvesters, and other Democrat pets. Surely Trump has this discretion, does he not?

While we're at it, let's make the qui tam awards much larger, like 75% of what's been stolen from us. It would be nice to get the money back from the hapless Somalis, but it's far more important to expose and harshly punish the white left-wingers who are orchestrating all these schemes behind the scenes to keep the Democrats financially afloat.

The Somalis are backstabbing pirates who would happily sell their grandmothers, so with some fat, widely publicized rewards and judicious use of immunity from prosecution or deportation, maybe we can begin to take a chainsaw to the arms of the Soros/Arabella octopus, and put torpedo after torpedo into the traitors and racketeers of the Democrat party.

Per NBC News:

The Justice Department is scrambling to review about 5.2 million pages related to the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein to comply with a law passed by Congress, a source familiar with the operation told NBC News on Tuesday night.

That number is much higher than previously known.

The Justice Department was seeking to enlist roughly 400 employees in the effort to sift through the records, which is expected to run from Friday to Jan. 20, two sources familiar with the plan told NBC News.

Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche said Wednesday that lawyers from department’s headquarters, the FBI, the Southern District of Florida and the Southern District of New York “are working around the clock through the holidays, including Christmas and New Years, to review documents in compliance with federal law.”

On the night of December 31st 1999 I was in London working in IT. I had one client who paid me big money to be at his site at midnight to ensure that the systems transitioned correctly. I was there and of course everything was fine. My wife and I then walked away down Shepherd's Bush Road and started randomly going into people's house parties as we walked home. It was a mad night. We ended up drinking absinthe and taking ecstasy and were thrown out of some stranger's house after she dropped several of their wine glasses on the floor. Anyway, we got home and she fell face down on a wine glass cutting her face and getting a black eye. We went bed and didn't give it much thought.

The next morning (late) we got up and realized that she needed some first aid, so we walked down to the local chemist shop. The was a Queen's Park Rangers football match on that day and the supporters were coming down the road from the tube station escorted by mounted police. Everyone was looking at me with murderous intent, and I couldn't understand what was going on. We get in the chemist shop, and even the old ladies are looking at me hatefully. I finally twigged that everyone was sure I had beaten her up badly the night before. I've never felt so happy to have had mounted police around me. Those football yobe were ready to dismantle me.

Life is much calmer these days. I'll get up in the morning and run 7 or 8 miles. I don't even run properly anymore, but fewer people want to beat me up.

@big Mike, IU has never won a football championship. They have 5 men’s basketball championships, 7 or so swimming championships (Mark Spitz), and a host of men’s soccer championships. They have won a couple minor bowl games, but that’s it. Around 1989 they celebrated the 100th anniversary of the football program by losing every game on their schedule. Until this year they had the most losses in NCAA history.

I wonder if Inga supports her fellow Democrats who are now calling for fraudulent Democrat supported day care "owners" to just gun down and kill anyone who asks questions like 'do you actually have any kids here?" Does Inga and Kak support Democrat lawmakers who are demanding we pass laws making it a crime to question daycare owners or visit them? Because surely that is a great way to make sure everyone knows there is no fraud here, if we just kill anyone who asks!

Inga's part of a party that demands young girls and women must never, ever, defend themselves against rapists. That's not the point of the Second amendment.... the point of the Second amendment is to allow Somali fraudsters to kill anyone who dares threaten their Democrat supported fraud.

Isn't that what you leftists support now, Inga? No gun rights to defend yourself from criminals, only gun rights to kill anyone who opposes Democrats.

Also: Inga no doubt supports the Democrat Minnesota policy of "You can vote as long as someone you bring with you says you can!" Not a single dime of vote fraud there, of course.

I gave the following to a group of parents when I was a grad student, my advisor Said I filed the mission,

If a father is talking to a son who’s just finished STAT 400, the message doesn’t need pep talk or philosophy. It needs transfer — how the math maps onto life without turning into cynicism.

Here’s what he should say.

“Everything you’ll face is a distribution — but you choose what to optimize.”

You’ve learned that:
• averages lie,
• variance matters,
• tails kill,
• and shape beats slogans.

Now apply that without becoming paralyzed.

1. Don’t argue with expected values — argue with variance

High expected payoff with high variance is often a trap unless:
• you can repeat the bet,
• the downside is bounded,
• or failure is reversible.

In life, most big bets are one-shot.
Protect against tail risk first.

2. Time changes distributions

The x-axis is not neutral.

Early losses compound.
Early wins compound faster.
Delays shrink option sets.

If you don’t like where the curve is going, change trajectories early — later you’re just integrating.

3. Equal areas are not equal lives

Two paths can have the same expected cost and feel nothing alike.

Choose:
• the curve that keeps you functional,
• the one you can explain to yourself at 3 a.m.,
• the one that doesn’t rely on heroics.

Survivorship is underrated.

4. Map before you dare

Random courage is noise.

Dare only where:
• exits exist,
• losses are capped,
• and learning transfers.

If you can’t sketch the landscape, you’re gambling, not exploring.

5. Folk wisdom is a Monte Carlo — useful, but uncontrolled

Listen to stories.
Don’t confuse them with proofs.

If someone can’t tell you:
• assumptions,
• constraints,
• and failure modes,

they don’t understand the thing they’re selling.

6. When the math says “leave,” leave

Sunk cost is a lie your brain tells to protect ego.

If the feasible region collapses, exit cleanly.
No speeches.
No rage.
Just reallocate.

7. Optimize for a life you can stay inside

Global optima that require constant heroics aren’t stable.

Aim for:
• wide basins,
• shallow gradients,
• low entropy,
• and room to breathe.

Happiness is often just low variance with upside optionality.

The closing line (the one he’ll remember)

“Be brave where the losses are small,
cautious where they’re terminal,
and humble about what you can’t model.
The rest takes care of itself.”

That’s what a father should say — not to make his son clever, but to make him durable.

With the backyard bird microphone on, though, I heard about 15 minutes of gunfire at midnight, some early, most continuing late, same as every new year.

I'll try the Amazon basics UPS. Done with Cyberpower. They used to be good but then started shipping with firmware that required battery charging before they'd turn on, to prevent turning on in shipping, but that firmware I think also produces malfunctions. Some new units never turn on. And now this one only functions with AC power applied.

We installed a wood/gas dual fuel pizza oven in our new house and I'm delighted with it. There is nothing quite the same as a pizza you made yourself, just out of the oven, almost too hot to eat.

We haven't done a wood fire yet. The gas produces excellent results. I haven't even started making my own dough yet. I have a friend who owns a pizza joint and buy it from him. I am looking forward to experimenting and finding out exactly what I like best, and with my own fresh dough and a wood fire, I expect it will be nirvana.

I have my eye on a used pizza prep table to keep things organized and refrigerated for big parties. They are surprisingly expensive when new, but pizza restaurants go out of business regularly, and most restaurant supply houses have used ones for sale, or you can often find them on Facebook Marketplace etc. "True" is the brand to get, according to my pizzaiolo friend, who will do the cooking when I throw a humdinger of a pizza party.

Reports have come in that Shirley is receiving death threats. One "journalist" (go to Twitchy to read) said the Stand Your Ground law might be invoked against Shirley. Minn has NO stand your ground law. Walking into the reception area of a facility open to the public is not a threatening move. Stupid as shite, evil Liberals. They want to CK him

Narciso, I haven't been there in decades, but I remember enjoying the stroll along their unique boardwalk along the ocean.

Tyler Robinson - he needs to be held up against a wall - and his neck blown out by a bullet that can take down a deer.

Just for basic fairness and honor.

The left need to understand that we are not going to put up with their soviet-death antics.

Sounds good, Beasts, but where I'm from the Bloody Mary has more kick to it. You need some Tabasco, or better yet, Cholula.

This was mixed year for my family.

All the kids are thriving, and are financially in good places. One of my nieces got married.

I lost my youngest brother in January. It was quite a shock; sudden heart attack.

I've been running at 30% since August. Just had back surgery on 15 December to fix the problem. So, I didn't get a lot accomplished. Had to cancel our Hawaii trip. We should have left today.

Happy New Year, everybody! Some rowdy individual set off a huge Tannerite bomb last night, and it caused consternation and celebration throughout the county.

Just watched Newhart season 6, episode 17 and Bill Maher was on it. I never knew he acted.

Ah yes my spouse and I wake up to our 45th New years day and will continue in our tradition of breakfast in bed and watching reruns of all the HONEY MOONERS CD'S I bought years ago.We even have the lost episodes and the original With different Alice etc. We laugh as hard everytime we watch them as we did when they were first on. Our 4 children, 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren all well and living one day at a time. Later today I will continue handicapping the midterm take over of the house by the Dems ,as of now I am seeing DEMS with 221 and Repubs with 213. The number has dropped since I looked at some of different scenarios but trump has an opportunity to make it even worse for Repubs. I will place my wager a few weeks before election and now dopping the beautiful thoroughbreds prepping for 1st Saturday in May and tuning in to all prep races. My wagering bankroll is strong and ready for some action. Cold spell in the south last couple days as temps dropped to low 60's so I took my outdoor plants inside and have to keep them from attack of the KITTIES!!! Help somebody today and give your Maker a smile(and keep it to yourself.

The last thing I did in 2025: watched Ricky Gervais' Netflix special "Mortality". Hilarious!

I'm going to try and draw/paint a squirrel each day for 2026. By 2027, I'll be a squirrel expert.

I will get excited about NYE celebrations again when drone displays replace fireworks.

I watched that the night before last and I haven’t laughed so much in a long, long time, ALP!

Speaking of Hogmanay, Edinburgh held their traditional torchlight parade, son-et-lumiere on the Castle, and other festivities last night. I'm glad some remnant of Scots audacity persists in the face of all the terror.

London also had its New Year's Day parade today. It's a bit more multi-kulti, but one of the cultures is American! - every year they have a US high school marching band come and perform. And the overall vibe is DIY - local organizations, nothing too grandiose. So the spirit of Stamford Bridge lives on a bit. CC, JSM

Tannerite is another one of those perfectly legal things, like black-powder cannons and Amanita muscaria mushrooms, that are adjacent to very similar things that are highly illegal.

If you are not familiar with Tannerite but someday get to see a detonation of a few pounds of it, you'll be quite surprised to learn it is perfectly legal and uncontrolled in most states (although there are certainly a few nanny-state Democrat shitholes that ban it, lest the peasants and serfs get any big ideas about freeing themselves from gangster government.) I once saw a tractor tire and wheel, too heavy for one man to lift, be sent a good 200 feet in the air with Tannerite.
