This afternoon in Madison, Wisconsin, we've got the Wisconsin/Ohio State football game and the big "No Kings" rally.

Am I worried about the chaos? Here's a helpful chart:

In short, it's a big Saturday, but a normal Saturday. A protest at the Capitol and a big football game at Camp Randall. The crowds should flow in and back out as crowds have ebbed and flowed from the isthmus from the beginning of football.

Grok made that chart for me. Is it accurate? I wouldn't say Camp Randall is on the "south side" of Madison. I think we all call that location the near west side.

Only 1 to 5 thousand protesters? That sounds like a pre-disappointment (if such a thing makes sense).

I'd like to see the Venn diagram on the overlap of both crowds.
I'll ask Kamala.

The No Kings crowd will be bigger than 5k, but nowhere near 80k. TDS is strong in WI, but not as strong as Badger Love.

You guys gonna get out there and get us some pictures? Barricade inside? Stay in the backyard and play? Let's see some content not just GrokAI telling us how things are playing out? (PS: yes, Camp Randall is on Madison's WEST side. Funny that you question that, living there so long, b/c a grok ai machine suggest otherwise... Be more skeptical, proffy? Some say you Boomers can't handle AI because you're not practiced enough with dismissing bullshit -- in a timely manner -- in the real world. That would explain the country your generation is leaving us to clean up...)

You're thinking of Golden Earring's Radar Love, perhaps?
Not too much love for this year's Badgers team led by Luke Fickell. Of course, you won't see that in Nebraska, but... #ChangeIsGonnaCome to Madison too. Let's see if his job survives the season?

The attempts to dramatize the “No Kings” rally are funny. The Trump admin isn’t doing anything to stop the rallies, but for the purposes of promotion, the organizers have to attempt to convince people that the rallies are somehow being suppressed.

You have a march and a rally in Madison? That’s very special. We only have the rally and it starts at 10:00.

I am planning a bike ride this afternoon and will be extra cautious using the overpass on East Washington Ave. During the first protest/march/rally the overpass was quite congested with protesters and banners. I was not expecting a crowd on what is normally an empty bridge and about 3 miles from the Capitol. I had to weave my way through them nearly got clobbered by a sign.

It shows how out of touch the "No Kings" - really should be "No Brains" - organizers were to schedule it on one of the biggest college football Saturdays of the year. ESPN listed 32 games today critical to conference standings and the CFP. Normal people will be focused all day on the games. The protests, if seen by anyone, will only demonstrate even more how unhinged the Democrat Party is and more voters will be driven away from them.

In Chambersburg, PA, near us, US Route 30 is detoured both directions for the party. It's a major east-west thoroughfare with a lot of semitruck traffic, mostly toll-dodgers avoiding the Turnpike, but a fair amount of local traffic too. Likewise, Route 30 in Gettysburg is blocked at about the same time.

Key Takeaways

A la king typically refers to a dish that is prepared with a creamy sauce containing diced vegetables, mushrooms, and sometimes meat, such as chicken or seafood. The dish is often served over rice, pasta, or toast points. The term is believed to have originated in France and has since become a popular way to prepare and serve a variety of dishes with a rich, savory sauce.

My older sister is participating in the rally in SoCal. She also forwarded a meme on social media claiming that ICE arrests constitute kidnapping, and therefore a felony. By that logic, any arrest by the Feds for breaking Federal law is kidnapping. Not well-thought through.

Nevertheless, I pray for her safety and that of those who are being completely (not mostly) peaceful. I reserve imprecatory prayers for the organizers and enablers, and the bad actors.

I dunno, isn't this at least the third 'No Kings' nationwide rally/protest? The first one drew some medium-sized crowds, the kind that make it almost impossible to get an impressive crowd picture. The second one, as far as I could tell at the time, died without much of a whimper. It looks like, in the modern era (no USAID teat), the budget for advertising has remained almost the same while the budget for rent-a-protesters has dried up, leaving only the delusional passionates. I'm not expecting much out of today. I guess the good news might be that ICE might have a more productive day, if all of the usual nitwits are off protesting kings, somewhere.

The irony of No Kings is that the constitution was specifically designed to give us a king. An indirectly elected one, but a king nonetheless. George W’s powers track pretty closely to George III’s powers. And III definitely saw himself as a constitutionally limited monarch. I was watching CSPAN Book TV last night - they are on a USA 250 push. A Harvard historian said that before the Continental Congress did the Declaration of Independence, they sent letters to G3 pleading for relief from the taxes etc. 3’s response was that he did not have the authority to override Parliament on such issues. Twenty years later the Constitutional Convention remembered that and carefully crafted the relationship between executive and legislature. But they still kept real powers in the executive, just as the King still had real powers.

So what the No Kings people are saying is “we don’t really care what Trump’s legal powers are - we want parliamentary supremacy. At least until we get our own King in there.”

It just generally comes off as weak. The obvious reply is "Duh, so what's your point?" Isn't the heart of the issue some sort of allegation that Trump has done kingly things? But, I thought Trump was supposed to be doing fascist things. Why the switch to opposing kingly things? What's the difference? Confusing.

What kind of king? Britain has a king, King Charles. But Charles isn't very threatening. Is Trump being like King Charles? Why would I come out on a rainy Madison day to protest King Charles?

We used work all day, then play ball at the parks summer nights, then drank some Lil' Kings, followed by an Olde English 40. Then get up the next morning and do it all over again.

Thankfully we have a tolerant President who is not disturbed by such shenanigans. With a Democrat in the WH, such event likely would not be permitted.

If permitted, demonstrators likely be made to stand 6 feet apart. On the upside, as gig workers they would be paid at least minimum wage.

The MAGA talking points is that the rallies will be chock full of Antifa and there will be lots of violence.

Got a link to these talking points? Apparently, I'm not on the list.

Most of us couldn't give two shits about your stupid, little tantrum. Get a life, already.

Well, the riots are usually scheduled after the reporters have filed their stories and are drinking their dinners, and the oldies are tucked into bed.

jim5301, I don't get your point - did you WANT more National Guard presence? Or expect it? Or did you think Trump-sympathizers were going to insist on it? The No Kings organizers have been assuring everybody who would listen that these would be peaceful protests, so why would Trump, or anyone else, bother with anything but ordinary crowd control measures?

Meanwhile, on the MAGA side of the aisle, you're probably catching the vibe that there's quite a bit of amusement at these spectacles and... you know, not a lot of outrage. I'm sure that's disappointing.

If the Buckeyes whoop the Badgers in Madison and after the game the Badger fans storm the field and tear down their own goalposts - that would be the equivalent of the No Kings protests.

I had an errand downtown around 11:00, parked and walked through them - they had grown to about a hundred folks. Very polite, and they seemed to be enjoying the gorgeous day. For some reason, they had an eight-foot inflatable unicorn front and center. Is this something I should know about?

Kakistocracy said...

Apparently being pro democracy means you hate America. Not sure I understand that logic myself.

There is nothing more unAmerican than an American politician -- the Speaker of the House, no less -- expressing hatred towards people peacefully exercising first amendment rights.

When Speaker of the House Mike Johnson ran for Congress in Louisiana, he apparently thought he was being elected to the Knesset, not to the U.S. Congress. This is not entirely surprising considering that the single largest donor group to Johnson before he became U.S. Speaker of the House was the "American" Israeli Political Action Committee (AIPAC). Hopefully, Johnson's constituents can help orient him in the right direction in the next election and remind him that he ran for office in the United States. A politician who does not value the first and most fundamental constitutional right, has absolutely no business making decisions that affect the entire nation.

Democrats are unhappy that Trump is President, but it's their own damn fault. The allowed their party, or the fat cat donors who pull the strings, to nominate three awful candidates in a row: Hillary, Biden, and Kamala. None of these would have made it through an honest, Democratic primary process. As they say in the old neighborhood, you fucked up.

You fight the fights that need fighting. No Kings won’t move the needle at the margin in any immediately measured way. But there are threshold effects in politics. And the marches are necessary to save the constitutional republic.

They mocked the Tea Partiers who turned up in colonial-era garb fifteen years ago, but now have inflatable unicorns, rats, frog suits, baby Trumps in diapers, and lots and lots of aposematic hair dye.

Yeah- like fighting to keep illegal alien criminals in the country. That kind of fight, right?

What a maroon.

Yeah I forgot those. The people who ridiculed old men protesting in tricorne hats during Obama's term are the same ones who wore those ridiculous things.

Yes, we are aware that your protests are very well funded by a small cabal of billionaires who desperately want the Democrats back in power, for some reason.

’And the marches are necessary to save the constitutional republic.’

The march was neither required nor essential to our Republic. It was optional and saved nothing.

Yancey Ward said...

To put it in perspective, there were probably fewer No King protestors across the entire country than showed up for just one of many outdoor rallies Trump held last year.

hombre said...

Kak: “And the marches are necessary to save the constitutional republic.” Old, wrinkled PBS watchers, Hamas supporters and commies. If we get a contingent of illegals and identifiable convicted felons to turn out, we will have the main body of the Democrat constituency “saving the republic.” Bwahahaha!

That these events aren’t turning into Burn Loot Murder reprises is probably a good indication that Trump has their infrastructure on the run. Plus, Black folks don’t give a shit about this. Turning out with White geezers to help the illegals who are damaging their communities is probably not a Black priority.
