"I ask Pinker whether we are witnessing an anti-rationality backlash. He suggests..."

"... what we’re seeing is 'greater inequality in irrationality.' Sport has never been more rational: nowadays in America every team has a statistician. Also, 'there’s more evidence-based medicine' than before. But 'at the same time as that, irrationality has gotten absolutely entrenched at the highest levels of power in the United States.' He thinks the roots of the problem may be partly traced to 'the politicisation of science.' During Covid there were 'hundreds of public health experts saying that it’s OK to go out in Black Lives Matter protests' because 'the benefits of social justice outweigh the costs of spreading Covid.' They would not have said the same had it been 'say, a Maga rally.' He cites a number of similar examples, including an academic journal that promised to 'consult members of indigenous minority groups before deciding whether to accept scientific papers' and a science magazine that endorsed Hillary Clinton for president. Such things 'erode the credibility of science.' He says: 'If science as an institution brands itself as on the political left, it should be prepared to alienate and maybe kiss off the American right.'"

From "Steven Pinker: I’m pinned between cancel culture and Trump/The Harvard psychologist talks to James Marriott about the campus ‘woke’ left and the Republican campaign to defund universities" (London Times).

Pinker is another example of someone who started on the political left, shares a lot of their opinions still, but has just had it with the obliviousness and lack of ability to even consider they might be wrong. He has been very mild and polite in stating genetic truths that other people are being denied employment about, because of being accused of "scientific racism." But he hasn't backed down and they are coming after him now as well.

Sorry, Dr. Pinker -- you're standing over the corpse of Enlightenment Liberalism. No matter how long you continue the CPR, no matter how many times you pulse that defibrillator, you aren't going to succeed in reanimating that cadaver.

Pinker is beginning to see the light. Some attacks on science come from the right, or from unpredictable aging hippies, but the left holds the high points of culture, and from there they have launched deeper attacks, more systemic to borrow a word.
Covid spread by droplets, likely to hit the floor within a few feet, or aerosols, staying airborne for many minutes? Latter was the right answer, former became orthodoxy. Why? Lent itself better to woke takeover of government, denial of freedoms. Origins of Covid became a matter of protecting the Chinese government and some Western scientists, who fully intend to carry out very dangerous research, with very little upside, in a non-Western country. Climate orthodoxy involves odds and ends of facts in a river of bullshit, culminating in childish and unscientific policy proposals. Hi Greta. I promise not to call you a Tylenol baby.

Liberalism is a philosophy of divergence. Progressivism is a philosophy of [unqualified] monotonic change. Conservativism is a philosophy of moderation, in America it is Pro-Life, Liberty, and the pursuit of Happiness under a Constitution that mitigates authoritarian progress and the Democratic/dictatorial duality. Principles matter.

If science as an institution brands itself as on the political left

If! They can't help themselves. It started with the Royal Society giving up political neutrality in 1968, and things have gotten worse ever since. Heck, Leonard Susskind warned about Trump, it was just so very pressing that he had to break the science/political wall. A lot of scientists are quite bright, and that tends to make them self satisfied, they never contemplate the possibility that they might be wrong. It is annoying how wonderful many think they are. Meanwhile climate change and denial of the lab origin of Covid-19 is dragging them into the toilet. If they they can't police themselves, they will be flushed.

He's declaring what we've all seen: That 'science' has become like so many late night talk show hosts. Proudly stating its political and social stances, then blowing off those who don't agree.
As for rationality, it's hard to pinpoint the standard for rationality these days. It is true that Trump is highly irrational. Which makes him supremely effective when working against foreign leaders, 'experts', and Democrats who all expect a right-side American politician to act and speak a certain way. He blows that norm out of the water.
Also- after a number of years of watching the 'rational' ones tell us how gender was fluid, how men could have babies, how giving kids the covid vax when it was unnecessary in kids and keeping them out of school was the rational thing to do- it became almost impossible to follow the Rational Ones.

I get where Pinker is stating his dilemma sits right now. We've all been there for a while. Maybe he has as well.

If he - like so many atheists - could acknowledge that religion* is not at war with science but instead - by assuming that a Creator would make Creation comprehensible - provides a worldview that makes science possible, he might have an easier time.

I get that the Religious Right didn't do the generic right any favors on this score. But while the Religious Right was noisily declaring that science wasn't of God, or something, and the only viable creation story is the one where everything poofs into existence, the Loopy Left was going all New Age and rejecting science just as thoroughly themselves - and with FAR more cultural impact.

* I'm speaking of Christianity for sure. Not every religion seems to postulate a comprehensible Creation (or a Creation at all).

“Climate orthodoxy involves odds and ends of facts in a river of bullshit, culminating in childish and unscientific policy proposals.”

We are told on their authority that the whole of the visible universe started with an enormous explosion, making us evolved specs which unexplainably are perfectly suspended in a giant cauldron of thermal, kinetic, and nuclear energy. Yet if I prefer an ICE vehicle or oppose the visual blight of wind and solar generation facilities they tell me i am an evil enemy to all mankind.

But the ruse is up when they also tell you that ICE engines are bad but they’re sorry they bought a Tesla because of Elon Musk, or the putative waterway in your residential backyard must be protected even at the bankrupting of your family if you disturbed it, but these wind power farms must go up on every hillside and out in every waterway that occasionally gets breezy.

Then you realize that a lot of the so-called science was compromised by needy or greedy grant-seekers, and the larger enterprise was carried forward by the combined social consequences of individual arrogance and smug self righteousness.

Science has been stumbling for a long time. Part of the problem is the publish or perish driving force of academic success combined with the refereed journal demands that only wildly successful experiments and findings can be published. This incentivizes fraud. Pharmaceutical science is in many ways worse because they publish insignificant results and goose the statistics to show improvements over the generic drugs the new drugs are trying to take over in order to Garner the outrageously high fees that can be charged on new patented drugs.

n.n said...

Evolutionary creationism is an article of faith, too. Notably, a doctrine of the Pro-Choice religion in progressive sects and nominally "secular" societies with liberal assumptions, assertions. A rationalization of performing human rites and other choices, other purposes.

Science is a logical domain and practice in near space (time?) through observation and replication.

Just mind boggling how many of the Davos elite found their way into his rolodex. That needs some explaining.

Does anyone still take pangloss Pinker seriously? The man who made his name telling us how everything was getting better, now telling us why it's all going to hell. He might once have sounded insightful, but his selective stretching and pulling of the datasets now has him scrambling to explain why he got it all wrong.

I've heard a suggestion that maybe we could establish a second, parallel track in research - a replication track, wherein researchers could make a successful career by attempting to replicate dramatic-results studies. Further, a null-results journal could highlight the studies that get done but don't get published at present - the person suggesting it pointed out that there is no longer that high publication cost with which journals have been able to defend their editorial choices for inclusion.

Of course there has to be an audience.

You can't be an expert and a scientist. They are mutually exclusive with separate sets of traits that are one or the other. Pinker is just saying out loud the left is antithetical to science on a fundamental level.

He just waited until it was safe for his career.

An expert knows things often in a certified way. This is the path of bureaucracy and political control.

A scientist is willing to question anything that they know and embraces uncertainty.

This is oil and water. Two completely opposite ends of a spectrum. Experts are the natural purveyors of bureaucracy and politics and by extension are the enemies of science.

Experts know and they are convicted. That is why the left is fundamentally organized as a religion right now.

The idea that science has gone to shit is wrong, only social science and the emotive parts of real science. If you need a new alloy to do a tough job, you got it, new batteries, no problem. If you need a modified algorithm to predict which dogs are going to attract more ticks based on a photograph, no problem.

Now that we have had 400 years to delve into the mysteries of Physics we have a good picture of how the world works, we don’t know the edge cases yet but at the level of a handful of atoms we know how to engineer. The most recent 14a chips have transistor gates that are 7 silicon atoms wide, we know what we are doing better than any other human in any other period of time, don’t kid yourself that we have devolved into dumb slobs, not all of us anyway.

The problem with "Science!" is not, you know, science. I do not believe anyone of consequence actually questions science, its methods, or its results.

What is in question is a corrupt priesthood calling itself science.

Go back 5,000 years, and you live in a village. The priest tells you that you need to sacrifice the goat and pay the priest some money, and if you do the rain will fall and you will get a good harvest, because that will make Ishtar or Demeter happy. Well, how do you know? The priest is the expert, right? He should know! So, you sacrifice your goat and give your daughter to the priest in hopes you don't starve.

We sneer and laugh at that now. Surely that was just sheer ignorance! Everyone knows that sacrificing your goat won't influence the weather!

Now you just need to sacrifice your car and your home! That will fix the ails and placate the climate gods! They aren't gods, of course... oh no, they are scientific principles! Which you shouldn't look at too close, but just listen to the experts! And hey, it doesn't hurt to send your daughter to them...

That's the problem with "Science." Unless you know the latest theories yourself, you still have to take on faith that those who claim to be the experts know what they are talking about. Is there a functional difference between Fauci or Al Gore and Michael Mann telling you what to do versus the high priest of Ishtar or Zeus?

We see the attack of the "religious left" on science, everywhere. Why, exactly, do we need to put a woman or a black man in charge of building that bridge? There's nothing wrong with a woman or a black man, but that's not what I want in the person building the bridge: i want the best engineer, the best doctor, not the one that "checked the DEI box." If the best is a woman, or the best is a black man, great! But if not... I don't want them. And that is now "offending science" if you ask the left.

Give me actual science... not leftist religion calling itself science.
