I think a case can be made at the US did not win the Cold War ; rather that the Soviets withdrew from the field of armed conflict and let subversion finish the task.

Nor have we fought a war since we defeated Japan in 45.
In his book "Parkinson's Law" (or maybe "The Law and the Profits"?) C Northcote Parkinson points out that the battle of Waterloo was planned in the pokey Horse Guards building. Then Royal Army HQ but that the fiasco of Gallipoli was planned in the fancy building that replaced it.
I forget whether Parkinson said it or someone was referencing him but I have seen it pointed out that the US has not won a war since the Pentagon was built. (Korea, VN, Balkans, Iraq)
We have also not been as well served by the Department of Defense (est 1947) as we used to be by the Department of War (Est 1789)
