"Padilla... actually received preferential treatment by not being arrested and jailed for his menacing display."

"The Secret Service agent warned [California Sen. Alex] Padilla, whom agents did not recognize as a senator and who wasn’t wearing his Senate pin, to back away from Noem and then forcibly removed him when he ignored their entreaties. 'They can represent this however they want, but those agents made the right decision to get him out of the room,' Charles Marino, a former Secret Service agent told RealClearPolitics. 'He did not have a congressional pin on, he was yelling and closing distance very quickly to make it to the front of the room to confront Noem. Look, he’s not above the law. Anyone taking those actions would been treated far worse – they would have been arrested and been forced to spend some time in jail...."

Writes Susan Crabtree, in "Secret Service Followed Protocol in Padilla Incident" (Real Clear Politics).

"'Any sudden movement towards a protectee that feels threatening, especially when that person has not been identified, the policy is 100% to prevent further escalation or movement toward Noem,' said a source in the Secret Service community.... After the two assassination attempts against Trump, agents are highly attuned to aggressive behavior and working to ensure they’re not involved in any security lapses...."

Apparently, they didn't know who he was, but what if they had? Is he saying he deserves special treatment? The "Don't You Know Who I Am?!" argument ought to fail.

The protectee was protected by those entrusted with protecting her.

Grandstanding gets its just reward, and Noem's response after is also worthy of note: She reached out and met - but off camera and focused on the grievance, without giving the lout any airtime.

I wonder how many of our esteemed opposition are going to be prominent features in the 'No Kings' tantrums today? Prediction #1: It's going to be disappointing to the underwriters. Prediction #2: If their local tantrum looks like it's anything less than camera ready, our opposition won't be making a strong showing to offer their endorsements. There's no percentage on dining out on 'causes'.

This whole thing seems contrived to me. Padilla knows how it works. He knows those agents have to do their job and what that looks like.
He is showing that he's willing to ruin those agents' careers to further this 'Trump is a dictator' narrative and not give it a second thought. Despicable.

He acted like an asshole (which comes naturally to him) and got treated like an asshole. He deserved more than he got.

Isn't it amazing how different the R and D Senators are? The D senators are out there in public, confronting Trump employees, showing up and shouting at Trump Cabinet members, and voting as a bloc 47-0 against every Trump nominee. And constantly pushing their leftwing agenda.

Meanwhile, the R Senators either say nothing, or help the Democrat by voting for Biden's nominees and blocking Trump's or they drop anonymous comments in the media about how much they hate MAGA. They're simply AWOL in pushing any issue the Republican voters want. Or in fighting the D's.

What a time we live in where the person physically threatening a protectee is in any way considered the victim for being stopped without injury. Democrats are the lords of Bizarro World.

RCOCEAN II said...

As for Padilla, this is just another childish stunt by a DC politican. But today, that seems to be par for the course. The R's behave like that, but they're not any better. What could more childish than Senator Paul whining about not being invited to a picnic. Or Tillis, refusing to allow a Trump nominee to be DC Federal Attorney because he's butt hurt (supposedly) over J6.

In fact their entire reaction to J6, where they all cried and ran away, or sreeched "We're all going to die" - just shows what clowns they are.

Noem knows what to do with mutts. Padilla screwed the pooch and got his 15 minutes of fame.

I'm starting to wonder if at least some of the motivation for 'No Kings' is that the Progressive Democrats have been so smacked around and whipsawed by their own bad polling data, that they're really conducting a nationwide 'show up and be counted' type poll, just to see how they really stand.

Like Secret Service agents, the median voter also does not recognize Alex Padilla, so the tackling and cuffing of a US senator may not be the political winner Democrats think it is.

The video of Padilla incident wasn't captured by the media. Members of Padilla’s staff filmed the response and then gave the footage to the Press outside the federal building.

So, let's say he'd been wearing his Senate pin and had identified himself. And let's say he had continued to close on her, at speed, acting threatening.

Is it out of the question that a "Sitting Senator" could snap and try to hurt a Trump appointee?

Is it?

I could see, under the above scenario, the Secret Service taking one tiny bit more care in stopping and removing him... but that's all.

I was surprised he wasn't tased. If he were treated as others have been, he probably would have been. Truthfully I initially thought he was just drunk. Had to laugh at some references to "senior" senator from California I have seen. While technically correct, he has only been senator since January 2021. Since he has indicated his intent was to interrupt Noem's press conference, he may want to avoid Congresswoman Sanchez who lectured Sec Bessent about not trying to talk over women.

They do, and they saw that was not excessive force. I kind of wish they had tased him so we could have a discussion on whether that was excessive force.

Yeah, not only was Padilla interrupting and intimidating a woman, he was stealing airtime from the real journalists in the room. Two more examples of the left not really believing what it professes.

Also, could you imagine Norm charging the dais at a congressional hearjng? She'd be the first prisoner of the Capitol Jail in over 100 years.

Finally, these Congress people who think their oversight powers entitle them to barge into any government space any time, need to study history. The last time in the English speaking world a legislature thought they could do that, it led.to years of chaos.

I think the Dutch are getting ready to sail into Chesapeake Bay...

Unnamed suspect managed to 'flee' though 'back of home' in gunfire exchange
Police have siezed the car suspect was driving during the time of shootings and uncovered manifesto
Manifesto named 'a number' of other lawmakers, resulting in heightened security through the state

The two shot MN legislators are both DFL. Both houses of the MN legislature have 1-vote majorities: the Senate for DFL, the House for the GOP.

The shooter may have been trying to do some DIY rebalancing.

I have been wondering if someone would do this sooner or later.

If lone wolves took out a bunch of D's, the R's could pounce on the resulting vacuum, depending on the laws of the jurisdiction wrt vacant seats.

But anyone who did this would be obviously crazy: no R leadership would so dishonorably take advantage of such a tragedy.

If it happened the other way around, though....

le Douanier said...

I haven't looked into this, though I did see the video. There was no lunging at Noem, the audio make it seem like she is not nearby. But there are a ton of security people around Padilla.

My assessment is that these security guys figured that they were dealing with an illegal person, or they were dealing with an illegal-supporting person because the dude is not white. So of course they would do this stuff to him. Their job is, precisely, doing this stuff to brown people.

Duh.

Aggie said...

@le Douanier - then, that assessment (projection) would make you the racist, not so?

RCOCEAN II said...

His being "brown" had little to do with it.

He's big, he's shouting , he's angry and he's advancing toward the Secretary. And then he ignores SS calls to back up or identify himself. Later, as if he's some dumb thug at a police road stop, Pallia decides to "clash with police" and shout "Dont you know who I am?"

Too bad they didn't tase the clown.
