Let's talk about Zohran Mamdani. I'd avoided even making a tag for him, but times have changed.

I'll start the conversation with this. The Democratic Party is in big trouble! It has the old guard and the possibly too crazy progressives. Yesterday's primary was a test.

Well, I guess I'll never see New York City. Escape from New York wasn't an instruction manual.

So:

- likely Muslim mayor of NYC is planning to loot the rich
- More than half the Democrat House caucus had to vote down their impeachment stunt
- The DNC is in the middle of imploding
- Trump has called for and gotten ceasefire from a nuclear power. Twice.
- And of course President Trump won the 2024 election despite multiple assassination attempts and "felony" kangaroo courts

... He's supposedly below 40% approval? Get outta here.

Sorry for posting this video I posted in another thread, as a warning to the right to not copy Democrats, but his video applies here too. Especially the part where the Democratic Party political discourse has become so restricted that their politicians can't even address situations as they occur except through using one of the very few possibilities the lefty framework allows, in order to avoid banishment. This makes them sound like morons to anybody outside of their tight little circle. But in NYC? The guy is a shoo-in.

Research Reveals Leftist Thought Much Less Diverse Than Right

They have trapped themselves I a box. Other than the great graph at the start, this references a funny article in lefty media about how "Blue Sky" has morphed into "Blue Scold."

Three flagship cities in the U.S:

LA with Cuba trained Karen Bass as mayor, Chi-Town with union thug Brandon Johnson at the helm, and now NYC with a socialist leading city down the drain.

Jamie said...

Jaq @7:04, I started watching that video thinking the man on the left of the split screen would eventually be revealed also to be the woman on the right (in drag), who would "react" to things he said in dramatic and entertaining fashion. I studied their jawlines etc. and was like, "Yup, that's him all right" - but no!

She could still be his sister.

I'll listen to it while walking the dog this morning - the two of them come across, in manner and appearance, as very much parts of the urban monoculture they say they oppose, so I'm interested to hear how they got there.

Mike Johnson needs to get off his lazy ass and pass laws that the Federal goverment cannot bailout morally and fiscally bankrupt socialist cities, like Biden did with Chicago in 2020.

If NYC wishes to spiral, let it.

At least with LA and Hollywood, nature let it burn and so did the democrats, to the joy of every blue collar worker in the country.

I remember in the past 5 or so years I lived in NYC looking at who was running for Mayor. It stunned me at the low quality of the candidates. And I figured it didn’t bode well for the future. DeBlasio did his best to ruin the city but he was ultimately just too lazy to get it done. This guy doesn’t seem lazy. The non-Manhattan borough denizens will be the ones to suffer. As usual.

The world's Democratic Socialists have the zealous, arrogant souls of 20th century Communists/Socialists. All the Greta-von-Blue-Octopus followers demand to reinvent these systems.

After the lessons of the bloody 20th century, the odds are that these zealots will spend 40 years in the wilderness as mostly ineffective. They'll be known for local wins and control (NYC, Chicago), ineffective revolutions that backfire (Gaza 2023), and random t*rrorism. See the airplane hijackings and urban b*mbings of the 1970s.

California spent 10 years allowing shoplifting to run wild, and most residents seemed to stare at their smartphones as their cities fell apart. To the extent that the upper classes with real power stay in remote work and the deep suburbs, they'll leave the cities to the economic losers of the day (i.e., people with limited income, limited assets, young, dependent on government aid, drug/sex mafia). This points to urban abandonment, avoidvance, and bleak Haiti-like futures for all such cities. While the Haitian slave revolt drove the colonial government away, it also drove international investments away. See Detroit. See Cuba.

In 50 years, this group may attract enough people and gain enough power to enact a new global class-race-green woke genocide. History doesn't repeat but it rhymes.

Developers are clearing piney woods in St. Johns county as quickly as they can find the labor to get 'er done. It's hard to keep up with the financial employers that keep bailing out of NYC and moving operations to our sunny shores.
The New Yorkers they employ used to stay in NY and find another job, but more and more now move with the company, especially those with families to raise. Their votes are clearly missed.

Mamdani is also a genuine political talent. A lot of voters aren't ideologically "pure". They want to vote for someone who is able to speak and act like a human being.

The Democratic dinosaurs are only part of the problem. Kamala Harris was in her political prime, age wise. However, the fact that she had no core convictions was a major problem.

There are way too many Democrats who have to be told what they stand for by political consultants working for various corporate lobbies. Authenticity is important too. There are also a lot of Democratic voters who are tired of losing. It isn't just a matter of re-treads either. The problem is a large part of the Democratic consulting class and the influence of major donors makes these candidates a much harder sell.

The Clinton formula worked in a world where voter enthusiasm was low, where the national trend was in favor of movement conservatism, and where getting 50.1% of the vote was fine. Post 9/11, Iraq War, the Great Financial Crisis and two Trump presidencies, we are in a different reality than the 1990s

If you thought DeBlasio was New York hitting rock bottom, Mamdani just told Bill to hold his beer. This is going to be fun.
If you pay any attention to the ins and outs of what is going on in Chicago under Brandon Johnson, you'll get a whiff of what's next for New York. But just a whiff. Unlike Johnson, who is a staunch socialist, but soft spoken and looking like a man who woke up one day and found himself unexpectedly in charge, Zohran is all about showtime. He looks and sounds like a guy who was going to be selling something in his life. And like so many politicians, the initial exposure seems palatable to enough people who like the 'feel' of how he's saying things without really deeply considering what he means, or who he is.

I look forward to seeing the new New York, like I used to look forward to the next season of Game of Thrones. The downside for those of us in Florida? I trust we'll be seeing another wave of NY plates running around here within 2 years.

I'd think twice before drawing any kind of a line from this result to Zohran's chances in November. Because of NY's multi-line ballot, Cuomo will appear on the Fight and Deliver Party line even though he lost the Democrat primary. Adams is also running in November as an independent. If the Zohran opposition can't coalesce around a single candidate he might split the vote again but the real election in November is not done via RCV. Cuomo or Adams only have to come up with more votes than Zohran without having to worry about an RCV process.

My daughter moved to NYC a few years ago. She is doing well and enjoying the Big City Life. I was curious what she was seeing about the mayoral race, and so broke our “no talking about politics” rule.

She replied that there wasn’t much talk about the race amongst her friends, but she was seeing lots of support for Mamdani on social media and ads plastered everywhere for him. She further said that given what she’s seen for how men treat women in business, there’s no way she’d vote for Cuomo who got kicked out of office for sexual harassment. She thinks NYC “absolutely” needs to be more affordable, so she’d vote for Mamdani – if she’d found the time to register to vote (major eye roll on dad’s part).

I texted back that Mamdani is proposing raising taxes on business and those making $1 million or more by some $10 billion. I asked whether businesses and the well-off would stick around for that or would head to more favorable locations.

I never heard back.

On the other hand, why stop at Grocery Stores? If the idea is to make food accessible to the population, what if they don't know how to cook? Shouldn't restaurants be government owned as well? NYC can make it the law that all establishments that sell food are now a division of the government. I challenge Zohran to make that his position. Let's see how socialist he really is.

Of course, that would mean no Chick-Fil-A's and Whataburger's for NYC, but then they probably don't know what they are missing anyway.

Their biggest concern is that Democrat voters might start learning from their experiences. Look to the socialist countries to see the progression. The leaders stay the same. Corporations decide to leave. Then, rich people leave. Then, talented professionals leave. Then, those in the middle class that can, leave. Those that cannot, join the lower classes. But through it all, the leadership style consolidates, the ruling circle gets ever smaller, but the decision-making stays the same. Does that sound like Venezuela? Does it also sound like California? It's hierarchy, not democracy. Nancy Pelosi is having a very good year in the stock market.

By the end of De Blasio's term in 2021, I think that old conventional wisdom was in jeopardy. Adams managed to stabilize things, but if Mamdani winds in November, I think New York City finally will pass the point of no return and become just another rapidly decaying city. Note that this is now the 7th of our largest cities (NYC, LA, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, San Francisco, Minneapolis) that is arguably "enemy-held territory" - if not openly communist, then openly hostile and actively fighting federal authorities. And here is how the strategy works, step by step.

- Flood the biggest cities with massive numbers of illegal aliens
- Lavish them with free housing, food, legal, education, and medical benefits
- De-criminalize violent behavior by these aliens
- Drive out the normal, law-abiding citizens with the violence and chaos
- Achieve super-majorities in these cities (so they can "legally" vote in ANY radical person, policy, or law they want - see California)
- Use these power centers in each state to take over the entire state and essentially use the rural areas as "cash cows"

No joke. It's clearly happening exactly like this. Better come up with a counter-strategy to flip the above script. Fast.

Don't a lot of middle middle-class on down in NYC get their groceries from Bodegas? Are those going to be 'collectivized' or will they have to compete now with these City-owned Grocery Stores? Will the bodegas get to buy on the same volume and credit extended to the City's stores, or no?

If I was a bodega-owner, I'd be inclined to dust off my pitchfork and fill a purchase order for torches...

Congress needs to go on a Salt free diet.
Financial markets need to act on the fact that location (in this case NYC) is not really important to their work.
If you can get out of NYC, get out now.
Quit counting illegals for apportionment (I keed when I suggest perhaps we could consider the new 3/5 compromise).
Get aggressive when prosecuting those that stand in the way of ICE.
Congress Critters should be sworn to not agree to bail outs.

Muslim is not a race. It is a political movement masquerading as a religion. Democrat is his disguise, islam is his goal and his political belief.

And I was reading yesterday Paterson NJ is virtually an islamist conclave. Not in this article- but read it and you'll get the idea. https://nypost.com/2025/03/10/us-news/paterson-mayor-calls-nj-city-capital-of-palestine-in-ramadan-remarks/

So we return to the final pages of Atlas Shrugged (which Althouse refuses to read because it is too long or something). The free markets team, including John Galt, is flying over the city of New York and the lights go out below them, implying that things are falling apart even in that monument to capitalism. What do these stalwart capitalists do? They begin planning the rise of a reborn city based on capitalist and libertarian principles. There won’t be government owned supermarkets.
Never undersell the power of markets.

@Gospace "Muslim is not a race. It is a political movement masquerading as a religion."

It is a religion -- a monotheism that worked for medieval warlords and that displaced older Bronze Age religions which were...seemingly harsher...

I see on his hit list a higher minimum wage and a refusal to help ICE (so a continuation of "sanctuary city" protections).

Why is it that, like California, those most insistent on higher minimum wages to get a "living wage" and also those insisting that their city/state economy is dependent on illegal workers that undercut those wages? Is it just disdain for the immigrants and the taxpayers simultaneously? Do they just hope no one notices (b/c they *know* the press will never ask them about it)?

My closest experience with that was when I lived in PA some years back and the liquor stores were state-run. Yes, it was like the Post Office or the DMV: limited hours, limited service, and prices just as high as anywhere else.

"Manhattanites are just goddamn dumb."
The margin in Manhattan was relatively close, as Cuomo won the more heavily Jewish areas, even the UWS. There was a big get out the vote campaign among synagogues. Cuomo also won big in the Bronx, somewhat surprisingly, and in Staten Island, not surprisingly (though there aren't a lot of Democrats in SI).

The combination of the radical leftist politics and the youthful, dark-complected good looks is like catnip for those dumb bitches.

The radicalism, because high-flown words and good intentions always trump measurable outcomes for the Left, especially female leftists.

The good looks, because these lonely old biddies are pining for an exotic fantasy boyfriend.

I'm really starting to think no one should have the franchise except men with an honorable discharge from the military, and women who have delivered 3 children. I'd lose my vote right along with the purple-haired cat ladies, but it would be worth it.

people with white quilt HATE themselves
just like rich kids that embrace marxism
just like queer kids that embrace Hamas

Once you realize that the modern left HATES themselves..

because they HATE Themselves

@Gilbar: I'm not sure people fully absorb how antisemitic it is to say "they're Jewish so of course they support Netanyahu." It's not that different from saying "they're Black, so of course they support Boko Haram" and is probably worse than saying "they're Irish, so of course they support the IRA." And try explaining "they're Jewish so they love Netanyahu" to an educated Israeli person.

Robert Conquest once noted that “The behavior of any bureaucratic organization can best be understood by assuming that it is controlled by a secret cabal of its enemies.” This is perhaps the simplest way to understand the hard left’s relentless takeover of the Democratic Party in general, and jihad-friendly social Zohran Mamdani winning the Democratic nomination for mayor of New York City.

State run grocery stores! What could go wrong? Decriminalising prostitution = more prostitution. Rent freeze? Most effective way to destroy a housing market short of area bombing.
Defund the police? Last time I was in NY - January 2020, we were staying near NY Library, and we didn't feel safe then. Subway was scary.
If he wins in November, the Democrats will be forced to defend crazy , stupid, policies.

I wish people would stop throwing around words like anti semitic or racist or sexist for that matter. Why would it reveal a hatred of Jews to say - you’re Jewish so of course you’re for Netanyahu. It may be wrong or show a simplistic view of politics but it isn’t a reveal of a hatred of a group of people. People use it as short hand.
I don’t really want to explain to you why a lot of people don’t like Netanyahu (maybe I’m not sure myself) so let me call you an antisemite, that will embarrass you into silence and then I’ll feel like a good person plus I won’t have to think of a better argument. Win. Win.

Finally, the Democratic Party can shed the moderate, centrist mask. Joe Biden's shambolic presidency and Obama's second term should've destroyed the illusion for anyone paying attention: it really is the socialist party, albeit a China version where the connected enjoy the upside of a capitalism where the State determines winners and losers. Or maybe Mexico is the better example, where the peasants and workers eternally vote in the Socialists, while the folks in the Zona Rosa always get richer.

Cuomo did well in Black and Hispanic neighborhoods, Mandami in White neighborhoods. That excludes the White ethnic neighborhoods. Curiously, though, Cuomo did well in much of the Upper East Side and some of the Upper West Side, places that are majority White. People there hate Trump and today's Republican Party, but they are well-to-do and not completely self-destructive. WFM is proof that commies don't have a monopoly on screwing up distribution. Thanks to Bezos's just-out-of-time logistics, my location is frequently out of the simplest things.

Maybe NYC could get the dope gangs to run the grocery stores. They have experience getting product into customers' hands even with two legal systems opposing them. And they definitely wouldn't be letting any shoplifters pull some nonsense in their stores.
