"[H]e was returning home from school when he realized that a car was following him. He recalled that a well-dressed man... emerged from the vehicle..."

"... and asked him for his name. Having been instructed by his mother not to speak to strangers, Mr. Staiola did not respond. Mr. Staiola said [the man, Vittorio De Sica,] then followed him home, where his parents immediately recognized the film eminence but refused to allow their son to appear in his movie. Later, Mr. Staiola recounted, an uncle took him back to audition before De Sica. Still determined to cast Mr. Staiola as Bruno, De Sica returned to his parents, Mr. Staiola said, and offered the extravagant sum of 300,000 lire for two months’ work. At that point, Mr. Staiola said, his father turned to him with a smile and declared: 'If you don’t go to work tomorrow, I’ll kill you.'"

ADDED: My son John wrote about "The Bicycle Thieves," with an update about Staiola's death, at his "101 Years of Movies" blog, here. It was his second favorite movie of the year 1948. (First was "Unfaithfully Yours," a movie I quoted a few years ago, here.)

The video says the movie is Bicycle Thieves yet the end of the trailer is The Bicycle Thief. Whicin is it?

Never heard of this classic, but I am uncultured and think Caddyshack is a classic.

The eyes have it. If you can live in a slice of time without a world war, you're better off than those who are not so fortunate. An unforgettable film.

…I saw this as a student- visually stunning but lots of chewing of the scenery, as was common in those days of film…

Yes, a real classic film.

There's a whole story there. Good question for A.I.

Both are correct. They should have kept the singular, but that's just my opinion.

Spoiler alert.

I remember that I saw it and I remember thinking that it was a very good film. However, I can't remember anything about it. I guess that makes it an only semi unforgettable film.

A US$ was worth 624.61 lira in 1950 (closest date I found).

300,000/624.61= US$480.

A 1950 dollar is worth $13.27 today.

$480 x 13.27 = $6,373.57

Pretentious twaddle.

Here's my Grok discussion about the 2 titles — plural and singular. Big spoiler at the link:

There are two 'Unfaithfully Yours'. One in 48 and one in 84.

A mirror image. I'm guessing it's the one in 48.

The link goes to a dead "terminated account".

$6,373.57

In post war Italy that was probably a significant fraction of an average man's yearly salary.

We could start a new thread. "The Hat, as Actor."
