You don't have to canoe where there are alligators, but...

... you do have to get to your house when there are bears in the way:

@susankehoe1 Many people ask me how I get in and out of my house when there are bears around. So I figured I would post a video to answer everybody’s question. These bears are marking their territory. #bear #wildlife #animals #furry #bigbear #mountains #house #nature #country #fypage #love #country #spirit #trees #outdoors #hiking ♬ original sound - Susan Kehoe

"....When I walk....they ignore me...." One day, we can all refer back to this video from the woman who left her car to walk to her house in the woods, rather than drive up to it, and lean on the horn.

I know this issue well. The answe is cautiously.. Black bears arent looking for trouble and tend to wander away if you make noise. We live in the San Bernardino mtns and they do seem more common these days

I cant leave my trash outside because we're getting bears mozt nights now. Not last night. We had a bobcat though. A mam and 2 cubs had been coming by oince a week amd now the cubs are on their own.

Heres a complilation video from 3 visitors in one day at my house. 3 Bears A cub during the day. A mama around 10pm, then a papa bear an hour later

Yep, Aggie. They're nice and cuddly and afraid, until they aren't. More people are killed by black bears than by brown bears.
How many time do I have to tell you people. Don't pester the wildlife. They bite.

Pro tip: to you, such animals are a wondrous part of the natural ecosystem that you want to respect and traverse among gently; to them, you are potential food.

"And friends, this is how it's done."

Yeah, right up until it no longer is how its done. Why didn't she drive up her driveway? How certain was she that it was only three bears? If there had been a fourth, she was so focused on her phone screen that she would never have seen it coming.

They usually tend to wander away....

A guy and his dog were killed by a black bear in Naples earlier this week. We have them all around us here in North Florida. Yogi's and Boo Boo's ever-which-a-ways. Be careful when you visit Florida. Mother Nature is not happy with tourists or developers.

Oh yeah, I dont trust them. I'll pester a coyote but keep my distance from bears if i can. Its the mtn lions up here that scare me more. And I dont have a dog now but when i did its extra attentiveness as bring some kind of defense or two. Sorry for all the typos. Using my phone and the text box is really small and not expanding so i can't see all the mistakes right away

Coyotes also almost always trot away, but ive had 3 times over the last couple decades where they came closer. Once clearly sizing me up.

The squirrels arent as dangerous, though they have those two sharp teeth, but this year have torn up our outside chair cushions for nesting material. Havent done that before and its very irritating. But the acorn woodpeckers are still the worst

Black bears get hungry, same as any other forest critter. And we humans are edible, as far as they are concerned.

You must've forgot to put the porridge away.

Timothy Treadwell may have some belated advice for her.

Somewhere, in a pile of bear scat, Timothy Treadwell's spirit clucks its tongue.

Paddy O, squirrels also got into our outside cushions this year, and never have before! Climate change, I tells ya...

In November 2023 a woman in California was partially eaten by a black bear that broke into her house. Bears are dangerous.

RAH said...

I take she can not shoot the bears? That is the obvious answer.

My thought, exactly. He believed he understood grizzly's right up to the point of his horrible death. He was a fool, but his girlfriend deserved better.

We are Door Dash for bears sometimes. That woman is a fool.

Hell man I always take my Security Six .357 when hiking or canoeing.. Yes a good revolver with full magnum loads (and the first chamber with bird shot.. snakes.) Good for any two, four, and no legged critters.)

See here in Texas we pack guns... lots of rivers and lakes and land to hike. Some black bears but lots of gators and hogs and snake sand two legged animals.

Drive to the door. honk the horn. stop the bear porn as clickbait

Clearly, brown bears or grizzlies are much more to be feared than black Bears but black bears are not benign as everyone has said. The odds are you will probably be safe with black bears around, but then again you might not. Clearly, the woman is an idiot. Why did she not just drive her car up to her house? why would she want to walk around black bears that will potentially kill her if she could have armor around her? From her accent, it sounds like she is from New York or New Jersey. My guess would be that she does not have a lot of experience, hiking and backpacking in the backcountry. Here in Southern California we do not really have grizzlies, but do have black bears and when hiking or backpacking, everyone who hikes and backpacks regularly in the backcountry clearly knows Appropriate precautions to take, and even then you were taking the risk.

She had her faithful all wheel drive Subaru--and could have driven to her door and given them a blast of the horn. I live on the SE face of the Verdugo Hills--a front range for the San Gabriels. We've got lots of deer and coyotes, more than a few bobcats, and the occasional fox, bear or mountain lion on the hillside immediately above my back fence. That's not to mention the rattlesnakes. You pay attention and do the right t hing--and you keep an eye out to protect your dogs and cats.

You never hear the bear that gets you.

I was shocked that those bears ignored the Posted "no tresspassing sign" . BTW, you can put socks on a bear, but it will still have bear feet.

I was visiting my grandfather in the Poconos one year. He lived in a rod and gun club neighborhood with wildlife all over. Mostly he had wild turkeys, chipmunks, and deer that would walk up to the house to find food. During the week, we had to work with neighbors to find a black bear to observe, from the other side of a creek with three of us and a firearm.
The morning I need to leave to catch my flight at Newark, momma bear decided to visit. She’s hanging out about 10 yards from my rental car, which is parked next to house and fortunately was loaded with the bear on the passenger side. I walked quickly to the car and got in while the bear ignored me. The bear didn’t ignore the engine cranking. I got to see a bear standing on its hind legs. Fortunately, I got it in gear and drove away without incident.

It takes a lot of bullets to bring 3 black bears down. Plus, they might just be furries or Japanese fellows who spent 2 million yen to be turned into something resembling bears.

In the Bear language, the word 'Bear' actually means "Eat me". We will remember her fondly at some future point in time.

Our neighbor was chased by a baby squirrel this week. More than 75'. Right to her front door. Then it waited, for her. She called animal rescue, who came and took the baby away.
