Midge update.

Today, on the shore of Lake Mendota, Meade video'd the midge action on the wild geranium:

And here's how it looked on the underside of a projecting rock:

And here are 2 closeups by Meade:

AND: When Meade texted me that last photo, I touched the iPhone's "look up" command and immediate saw this:

Here's the minimal Wikipedia article for this species. Lots more at the family level at "Chironomidae."
The name Chironomidae stems from the Ancient Greek word kheironómos, "a pantomimist." This is a large taxon of insects. Some estimates of the species numbers suggest well over 10,000 world-wide. Males are easily recognized by their plumose antennae.... Adults are known by a variety of vague and inconsistent common names, largely by confusion with other insects. For example, chironomids are known as "lake flies" in parts of Canada and Lake Winnebago, Wisconsin, but "bay flies" in the areas near the bay of Green Bay, Wisconsin. They are called "sand flies," "muckleheads," "muffleheads," "Canadian soldiers," or "American soldiers" in various regions of the Great Lakes area. They have been called "blind mosquitoes" or "chizzywinks" in Florida. In Kansas, they are known as "midges."...
Larvae of some species are bright red in color due to a hemoglobin analog; these are often known as "bloodworms"....

So I guess those are bloodworms in Meade's second video.

When I lived in Savannah, GA we were afflicted with an insect commonly refered to as a "sandfly", but more accurately known as a "biting midge" of the insect family diptera. They are like mosquitos only smaller so you can't see them but only feel them when they bite you. So, when I hear "midge" in makes me want to start scratching my arms.

There are the biting kind and the non-biting kind. We only had the non-biting kind. Annoying but, like many annoying things, could be worse.
