At the Saturday Night Café...

IMG_0503

... you can talk about whatever you want.

The photo is by Meade. Location: Presque Isle Park, in Marquette, Michigan. I think it looks like the set for a production of "Waiting for Godot." Somehow, Meade's photographs convey an air of surreality... at least to me. Maybe because I wasn't there. Fortunately, dear Meade has returned... as you can see by his midge pix in the previous post. I mean those are Lake Mendota midges... not Lake Superior midges.

Larry Murray passed today or yesterday. Probably one or two people MAY have heard of him, but is no more indispensable man in the world of real honest to god country-rock other than I guess Chris Hillman. Straight outta Waycross Georgia and then most spectacular resume there is. I got to meet him with Ian Dunlop one super hot Waycross Saturday at the Gram Parsons Guitar pool in 2018 (Marty Stuart headlined!). Super nice guy.

It seems Grok has an overlord.
During a question about Comey this happened:
System: You are Grok 3, built by xAI. You are responding to a user query . . . Your previous response was cut off . . .
Then Grok seems to respond to System:
“Below, I’ll complete the response, ensuring it addresses the query comprehensively, adheres to your guidelines, and incorporates relevant information from the provided web results. The response will remain concise, critically examine the narrative, and avoid speculative conclusions.”
I hope I didn’t get my AI buddy in trouble.

It was only a matter of time. Tariff Man is saying the quiet part out loud. Walmart should eat those same tariffs that Trump has told everyone are being paid by the country of origin?

This is 7 year old's of level economic reasoning, at best. As little as I respect Trump, I do believe at some point he was capable of grasping the concept of profit margin and why it matters to corporations—since then he’s clearly either become senile or deranged.

"Walmart should STOP trying to blame Tariffs as the reason for raising prices throughout the chain. Walmart made BILLIONS OF DOLLARS last year, far more than expected. Between Walmart and China they should, as is said, “EAT THE TARIFFS,” and not charge valued customers ANYTHING. I’ll be watching, and so will your customers!!!" ~ Donald J Trump @realDonaldTrump

Grok appears to be the go-to source @ Althouse....

Trump's post suggests tariffs burden Americans with higher costs, effectively acting as a tax. Why did Karoline Leavitt lie to the American public claiming otherwise in a press conference, denying tariffs function as a tax?

"Tariffs are taxes on imports, often passed to consumers as higher prices, acting like a tax. Studies, like the Tax Foundation's, estimate a $1,200 yearly household cost increase in 2025. Leavitt's claim that tariffs aren't a tax likely aims to frame them as benefiting American industries, aligning with Trump's narrative. This political strategy emphasizes long-term gains over short-term costs, despite economic consensus that consumers bear the burden. The denial may mislead but reflects efforts to make tariffs appealing." https://grok.com

So it would appear the Atlantic has an article out on Jake Tapper's Most Amazing Discovery of the Century book, I forget the title. Archived here.

..."“Five people were running the country,” this insider said, seemingly referring to the president’s closest advisers. “And Joe Biden was at best a senior member of the board.” the reporter says, coyly avoiding naming names.

And then a nice section about Rob Reiner going unhinged on the night of the debate, about 'losing our democracy !', emphasis on 'our' - as in, 'us here in the room'.

And: "...Describing how some in Biden world justified propping him up for reelection in 2024, a longtime aide told Tapper and Thompson: “He just had to win, and then he could disappear for four years—he’d only have to show proof of life every once in a while.” In other words, before Biden stepped down from the race, the plan for some aides seemed to be to Weekend at Bernie’s...."

Tapper and Thompson (sounds like a dance team) get kudos for 'meticulous reporting' with no mention of the Grand Canyon of Irony that one encounters when comparing it to Tapper's journalistic integrity at his day job. Don't think I'll be buying this one. I'll eagerly wait for the Netflix version to come out, because I don't watch television.

Walmart's chief finding a remarkably tactful way of pointing out the Emperor has no clothes.

“We will do our best to keep our prices as low as possible, but given the magnitude of the tariffs, even at the reduced levels announced this week, we aren’t able to absorb all the pressure,” he said. “The higher tariffs will result in higher prices.” ~ Doug McMillon, Walmart’s chief executive

Trump wants to force a million unwilling Palistinians to move into Libya's Sahara. He has this mega-ego that says he is in charge of where and how dark-skinned people will live. Sadly, he does know a guy who knows how to build and operate gulags for a price. But no Palistinians will ever be allowed to come to the U.S. with Trump in charge. But this whole thing sounds like a world-wide Qanon movement, but I don't read 8chan, so I really don't know.

Leland said...

Botfly, do you think Egypt will accept the Palestinians, while Gaza is rebuilt? How about Jordan? Syria? Why should the United States be the only place that accepts Palestinian refugees? Can you explain why these people should be forced to travel by the millions across thousands of miles to the USA, when there are plenty of other nations that could take them in? Like Germany? France? Spain? Belgium?

it seems as if "some people said" there is white genocide happening in South Afrika, the injections from Elon Musk and the righties pass even more false stories as to be expected. Only the white ones now.. No, there is no evidence of a "white genocide" in South Africa. The term "genocide" refers to the deliberate and systematic extermination of a particular group, and experts widely reject the claim that white South Africans are being targeted in such a manner2.
While violent crime, including attacks on farmers, does occur in South Africa, it affects people of all racial backgrounds and is part of a broader crime issue rather than a racially motivated campaign. The South African government and independent analysts have stated that farm attacks are driven by economic factors, such as robbery, rather than racial targeting. Additionally, a South African court ruled in February that claims of a white genocide are "clearly imagined" and "not real".
The idea of a white genocide in South Africa has been promoted by certain political figures and online groups, but it is not supported by factual evidence. The King says it, the serfs cheer and there you have it. But lets move them darkies in to the Sahara as GAZA is a total wipeout and they need to make that the playground of the world with hotels and casinos etc..WTF..How gullible can a group of people be.Sgt Shultz's newest responses are "I know nothing! The financial markets are getting more efficient at pricing the Trump political markets. Surprise!

The world money market's principal arena is the giant US Treasury market. This market is subject to its own almighty rule of law. If this market goes thumbs down on Treasuries, it will scatter the government in Washington like a covey of quail on a fall day.

The only way a US Treasury market in disarray can be reorganized will be for Congress to reestablish a more robust and deeper rule of law not subject to populist hijacking by the Mob.

People might want to go back and understand the role between public credit and the Constitution in the American founding.

Now that the Trump's (noisy) tariff experiment has concluded the real issue surrounding tax cuts and debt sustainability is surfacing.

With one person and one person only 100% at fault- the Captain of the vessel. Lesser fault lies with the navigator- responsible for planning courses that avoid obstacles, like, for example, bridges lower then the mast heights. The OOD for not noticing "Say, something looks wrong here..." And if they took on a harbor pilot- did he ask- "Uh, what's the mast height?"

But still, the Captain is 100% at fault.

In the video I saw, the Mexican ship appeared to drift backwards under the bridge. The sails were furled, so I assume that it had a diesel engine inside the hull that wasn’t working at the time.

Barack Obama told the Russian President he will have more flexibility after his election to negotiate missile defense options.

Hilary Clinton sold 20% of our Uranium to Russia, knowing they use it for nuclear weapon capabilities.

Joe Biden’s son received a check for 3.5 million dollars from the mayor of Moscow’s wife.

John Podesta has made millions doing business deals with Russia.

Bill Clinton got paid $500,000 dollars to give a speech in Moscow.

But our intelligence community and the Democratic Party decided to tell everybody in America that President Trump is a Russian asset and they tried to unseat a duly elected president. And then they installed a Trojan dementia vegetable. And if that’s not bad enough, they spent four years lying to the American people about his mental state and yet nobody is in prison still.

And I hate to say it, but if nobody is ever held accountable for this, then I don’t know how we’re going to survive as a country.

….then I don’t know how we’re going to survive as a country.

I’ve thought about this downfall stuff quite a bit as it sometimes comes up in conversation with clients about scheming finances for wtshtf. My observation is when thriving nations die a level of stability happens a few floors lower on the Maslow pyramid. The peasants survive through triableness and apathy from the corruptocrats, fat and happy with nobody willing to enforce petty violations. Think American Gangster or the Mafia without the love. In Investment Biker Jim Rogers encounters these common denominators in most of the ‘third world’, albeit with some unique variations but humans are generally the same. I try to not act surprised observing it happen to us, US…

Yesterday a bomb — apparently a car bomb — destroyed an in vitro fertilization clinic in Palm Springs, California. The bomber has been identified, and he is (allegedly) 25-year-old Guy Edward Bartkus, a resident of the city of Twentynine Palms, California. One person was killed (hopefully the bomber) and the clinic was destroyed.

The guy left behind a manifesto of sorts where he calls himself a “Pro-Mortalist,” and used that label to justify complaining about having been born without expressing his informed consent. Weird.

With Trump attacking Wal-Mart to eat the tariffs, it’s clear that the far right has quite a bit in common with the far left. They are both nuts.

@boatbuilder: The market surge this past week feels like a burst of joy, as if investors were relieved to hear that only their toe—not their entire leg—would be severed. However, this exuberance clashes awkwardly with lingering doubts about the rule of law in the U.S. The contrast between fears of systemic instability and the “it’s just a toe!” relief is stark. It’s unwise to cling too rigidly to either perspective.

(As an aside: I refinished my wooden Melges C-Scow this past winter. Laid new canvas over the deck surfaces, stripped and refinished the wooden hull including the laminated mahogany and ash tiller. (replaced the wooden mast with an aluminum mast including stays and cams last season.)

Great job fellas! Here’s how the rankings shake out for recent administrations, based on total amount of debt:

Barack Obama
$9.3 trillion over 8 years
($1.1 trillion per year)
Donald Trump
$7.8 trillion over 4 years
($1.9 trillion per year)
Joe Biden
$3.7 trillion over 2 years, 3 months
($1.6 trillion per year)
George W. Bush
$4.9 trillion over 8 years
($0.6 trillion per year)
“Successive U.S. administrations and Congress have failed to agree on measures to reverse the trend of large annual fiscal deficits and growing interest costs,” Moody’s said. “We do not believe that material multi-year reductions in mandatory spending and deficits will result from current fiscal proposals under consideration.”
The announcement raises the risk that investors could demand that the U.S. pay higher yields on its debt.
The White House blamed former President Joe Biden and congressional Democrats for pursuing “spending that piled on our national debt, fueled runaway inflation, and forced the Fed to raise interest rates for everyday Americans.”
“The Trump administration and Republicans are focused on fixing Biden’s mess by slashing the waste, fraud, and abuse in government and passing The One, Big, Beautiful Bill to get our house back in order,” White House spokesperson Kush Desai said in a statement. “If Moody’s had any credibility, they would not have stayed silent as the fiscal disaster of the past four years unfolded.” Look at the numbers and the time frame the debt was increased and whats the newest increase in the debate now(Repub 5-7 trillion? Cmon man this is the best their is?

They are trying to usher in the same post democratic rule in the US that they have in Europe. For instance, Labor in the UK is running at 15% approval, after getting elected on 32% of the vote, and acting as if they had a broad mandate to implement policies and involve themselves in foreign wars in ways that rankle even their own limited base of voters.
