What the Democrats did was perfectly normal and they were just copying a pattern that has played out repeatedly in history. Most countries have a government of the type that the Democrats installed and were trying to maintain.

For example Russia. They have a government that most people don't really like. They control the media, the internet, popular culture, education system etc. They spy on and jail their political opposition. They have militia irregulars attacking and burning citizens stuff. Corrupt federal law enforcement.

Everyone knows Putin runs Russia but he isn't the President just like everyone knows Biden was Obama's 3rd term.

The Democrats didn't think they were going to be popular. They just thought they could keep the people mollified enough to hold power and keep the corruption going like every other country in the world.

There are very few people in the world that are capable of an actually free society that are able to form and organize political parties. The average Republican voter right now is a 1960's Kennedy Democrat ideologically.
