"South Korea’s likely next leader would support President Donald Trump’s efforts to restart dialogue with North Korea’s Kim Jong Un..."

"... and would even consider nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize if there was a significant breakthrough, signaling a sharp change from Seoul’s current hard-line approach toward Pyongyang...."

From "South Korea’s likely next leader wants warmer ties with China, North Korea/Lee Jae-myung says he would support President Donald Trump’s efforts to restart talks with North Korea — and even consider nominating him for the Nobel Peace Prize" (WaPo)(free-access link).
"I hope there will be a situation within this year under which we as a party officially nominate Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize,” [Lee Jae-myung] said....
When Japan’s former prime minister, Shinzo Abe, nominated him for the same award in 2019, he called it “most beautiful.”...
Last year, Lee survived an assassination attempt after a man stabbed him in the neck during an event. “I collapsed and looked at the blue sky and thought, ‘Oh, that sky will soon disappear from my sight. This must be death,’” Lee said. “Now, the time I have left feels like a bonus. It made me a freer person, less worried about the preciousness of my life.”

I thought Trump got bored with dealing with North Korea and just quit. Is he trying to restart it. Will Trump start out insulting him ("little rocket man") and then declare his undying love, like he did last time?

It's funny that the last leader, who was supremely unpopular, declared martial law for about an hour, before it was revoked, but you know what? Within a couple of weeks ATACMS missiles with serial numbers which indicated that they had been sold to South Korea turned up in attacks on Russian soil. Also we suddenly had decent stocks of artillery shells to send Ukraine. The missiles and shells were probably under US physical control, and the paper to sign to release them was probably already written and on his desk when he pulled the maneuver.

He declared that he was forced to invoke martial law due to paralysis in decision making, which meant that the people whom the South Koreans elected to the majority, wanted no part of these wars with their direct neighbors, Russia and China. This was more of Joe Biden's "defense of democracy" at work.

None of the leaders pushing this war has any kind of majority support in Europe anymore than the last leader in South Korea did. They keep cooking the rules to keep the parties winning the largest share of the votes, who seem always to oppose getting involved in the Ukrainian civil war, from power.

"Muh norms!"

Whatever you think of his tactics, we had a deal with the North Koreans, Freder, until John Bolton sabotaged it. Because your new friends, the neocons, preferred the state of war to peace.

South Korea has such a low birth rate, it will soon be shrinking. At some point, the North Korean army may just be able to walk in.

This statement is just pure fantasy on your part. And even if it were true, it is amazing that Bolton, appointed by Trump, was able to torpedo the agreement. Makes Trump look like a weak idiot (which he was, of course, for appointing Bolton in the first place).

North Korea, an asylum of abused prisoners led by kleptocrat maniacs and contained by the military force of its neighbors, is a Chinese cat's paw at times, a basket case at others. It will eventually fall, hopefully like East Germany or Romania rather than in a frenzy of destruction reaching outward. So if the Kim regime can be moved to China to live in exile like Uganda's Idi Amin did in Saudi Arabia, there is hope. If the Kims decide to go down shooting, well, they have a few nukes. They may have to experience the first retaliatory nuclear strike in human history. So yeah, fun times ahead.

You are right, Freder, in that Trump was greatly weakened by his own party, which limited his personnel choices to approved members of the war-mongering class, which you defend and are aligned with. It's different this time, he has loyal people in place at the top, in the cabinet posts. Which is what all of the caterwauling is about from the neocon aligned McConnell and his best buddy, Schumer, is about.

It's a different Trump this time. No more members of his own cabinet siccing a special prosecutor on him for stuff that they knew, within a day, according to the hand written notes of the CIA Director, were fabricated by the Hillary campaign.

Bolton sabotaged the talks between Trump and Kim, you can google it yourself.

Why is it that the purported lefties on this site seem to hate peace and understanding between nations?

Lee Jae-myung, like Donald Trump, survived an assassination attempt. If you’re for peace then the Left will con someone into trying to murder you.

Just wait until Trump earns back-to-back Nobel prizes for Ukraine and Korea.

...signaling a sharp change from Seoul’s current hard-line approach toward Pyongyang...

South Korea's hard-line approach is not the problem. WaPo knows that, yet chooses not to comment on the vast catalogue of crimes the Kim regime has visited on everyone concerned over many decades.

The emphasis on a possible consideration of a Nobel Prize nomination is simply a tactic conceived by Obama and fed to the Post's editors to distract Trump from his mission to reform and decontaminate the alphabet agencies that have been co-opted by the Democrat's money laundering cabal.

Here's the gist of Obama's thinking: I've got a Nobel Prize. Trump must be jealous and wants one too, I'd certainly be envious if the situation was reversed. If it were me, I'd be in a blind panic over the empty space on my wall. Trump cannot be less fascinated by such glittery gold as I am. Therefore, I'll dangle that worm before his covetous eyes and hope he gets snagged on the hidden hook.

It won't work. Obama ruined Alfred Nobel's entire concept of his foundation outside awards for strictly scientific accomplishments by not accepting the Committee's laurels-for-absolutely-nothing bootlicking. Obama could have elevated himself above the bottom tier of presidents by declining the award. However, being true to his nature, he snatched it greedily, and thereby reduced the Prize to nothing but a lump of metal worth no more than the commodities markets' diktat and some waste paper.

If they hope to hook that mighty fish, the Democrats will need something far more tempting than a plastic worm.

North Korea...east Asian isolationism. Many regional governments have had "private periods." See Japan and Bhutan for example, plus the Chinese love walls and forbidden places. I fear that the Krazy Kim clan of North Korea has more than enough patience to outlast the herky-jerky US. China has 1,000x more influence than the US too.

I’ve only heard Trump talk about his near death experience with Rogan and they didn’t spend much time on it. Trump said the shooting “didn’t feel surreal to him. [He] knew exactly what was happening.” For a man who is supposedly all about himself, not constantly talking about his near death experience surely doesn’t comport to what we have been led to believe and come to expect.

If Trump gets the peace prize, during his acceptance he should start his speech with accepting his award on behalf of the IDF and their work to bring peace to Gaza. I would like to see if they would turn off his mic.

As far as last Trump term, he admits making lots of mistakes. Maybe Little Marco and Little Rocket Man will hang out a deal to trade Kim's nukes for massive redevelopment of the failed state .

It's interesting. It's looking more and more like the DNC did Don a favor by crushing him from 2020-2024. Made him more powerful, popular and he acquired a new brain trust to what looks like implement operation Warp Speed on the entire Federal government. He seems passionate about reducing tensions and stimulating economic growth instead. I hope he's successful. I'm not counting on it, but am cautious optimist.

Freder Frederson: "I thought Trump got bored with dealing with North Korea and just quit."

Dumb people think dumb thoughts all the time. Which Freder demonstrates daily as he continues his spittle-flecked rantings as wiser thinkers like James Carville stare in amazement at how the The New Soviet Democratical Party has been captured by an army of buffoonish Freders.

The latter sentiment I'm sure Lee and Trump could share together.

“I collapsed and looked at the blue sky and thought, ‘Oh, that sky will soon disappear from my sight. This must be death,’” Lee said. “Now, the time I have left feels like a bonus. It made me a freer person, less worried about the preciousness of my life.”

The NORKs will come in using walkers. Their birth rate is low too; just not as low as the South’s. The North is 1.8; the South is 0.78.

That’s fertility rate, not birth rate.

I did notice one thing, however. With Trump 45 Lil'Kim took a pause in lobbing explosives into the south China sea.

‘Oh, that sky will soon disappear from my sight. This must be death’
_____

“There was nothing over him now except the sky—the lofty sky, not clear, but still immeasurably lofty, with gray clouds slowly creeping across it. “How quiet, calm, and solemn, not at all like when I was running,” thought Prince Andrei, “not like when we were running, shouting, and fighting; not at all like when the Frenchman and the artillerist, with angry and frightened faces, were pulling at the swab— it’s quite different the way the clouds creep across this lofty, infinite sky. How is it I haven’t seen this lofty sky before? And how happy I am that I’ve finally come to know it. Yes! everything is empty, everything is a deception, except this infinite sky. There is nothing, nothing except that. But there is not even that, there is nothing except silence, tranquility. And thank God!...”

Mikee, ref the Kims going into exile in Red China:

The PRC is so big that they could build a Potemkin North Korea inside their country, where the Kims & Co could keep living in the style to which they are accustomed. Virtual reality technology could even make them think they never left the real North Korea. Stream footage to the rest of the world to help fund the project. "The Kim Show!"
