"On her first day in office, [Attorney General Pam Bondi] announced the creation of a 'Weaponization Working Group,' purportedly intended to root out 'abuses of the criminal justice process'..."
"... by local and federal law enforcement officers, including those who had investigated Mr. Trump.
Current and former Justice Department officials view those claims as merely an excuse to justify the brazen politicization of the department under Mr. Trump and his team. It has left many employees angry and worried for the department’s future.
The [Eric] Adams case brought those concerns to a head. One veteran prosecutor told a friend late Thursday that he was not answering phone calls, in hopes of avoiding a demand to take an action that would force his resignation...."

"It has left many employees angry and worried for the department’s future." Angry that they can no longer serve the interests of the Dem party.
As to that guy who want answer his phone, go right ahead and resign.
There are so many lawyers, it's not like we're running out anytime soon will we? Like eggs, we will soon be hoarding attorneys. And like eggs, they will eventually go bad and have to be thrown out, and then who will be left to refuse to answer phone calls. Which has to be a fairly stupid way to try and hold on to one's job, by not actually doing it. In a really open and obvious way.
"One veteran prosecutor told a friend late Thursday ...." Yeah? He's got a friend? Did he ask to remain anonymous, and is his 'friend' a reporter?
This is just setting the groundwork for the future firing of uncooperative workers that won't get with the program. The Ground Rules are being laid down. A new administration gets to do that, and the complaining seems to be around how fast it's getting done.
We had four years of a "retribution minded" criminal justice system, and the whole country knows it. I think that Emerson said that "If you strike at the king, you must kill him."
It was just four years ago when a prominent lefty said that it was kind of amazing how little consequence there had been for banning a sitting US president from social media.
I don't know about Eric Adams, but it the timing of the indictment seemed pretty suspicious. He was standing up for his constituents, for New Yorkers, and Biden told him "just be a good Democrat, Eric" and bam! Indictment over an expedited fire inspection, which I think may have even happened before he took office.
It's pretty funny too that they charged him with violating the very FARA law that Hunter Biden, who flew with his father constantly on Air Force One, and who, we now know, took over for his father at White House meetings after his dementia became obvious, the very FARA law that Hunter routinely flouted and which the DoJ completely ignored.
It's almost as if FARA laws only apply to Biden's political rivals. Hillary routinely violated this law too.
What a propaganda piece! Who are these DOJ officials? Why aren't they named? How many are there? Do they even exist?
Let me guess, the reporter probably has a friend or two at DOJ or goes to Synagogue or plays Tennis with someone.
And that's spun into some major story. LOL.
BIden weaponized the DoJ to go after people they didn't like. But the NYT's had no problem with that. That was "Saving Democracy". Trying to jail Trump was OK too. Because its perfectly normal for a POTUS to try to put his predecessor in jail so he cant run against him. I mean didn't Grover Clevland, Reagan and Clinton do that?
But now that Trump's DOJ is investigating the DOJ's officials to see if they behaved legally and ethically, the unethical lawyers are getting "Concerned" and "angry". LOL!
DOJ and AG get the final word on who gets prosecuted. Barr sat on the Hunter Biden investigation for months. Its amusing that Trump is accused of protecting the NYC mayor, a Black liberal/left Democrat, who supported the NYC DA trying to jail Trump.
Maybe DOJ doesn't think Adams can be convicted with a NYC Jury. Or that the case is weak. Plenty of good reasons to stop a case. Maybe they looked at Biden's classified documents case, and are following that example.
So refusing to continue to prosecute someone, who was targeted for political purposes, is a an act of retribution? The NYT is the paper of record for Idiocracy.
Is Bondi Trump's "Wing (Wo)man? Will Bondi drop charges in cases as obvious as the New Black Panther Party at the polling places? Will Bondi bring in local DA's to coordinate "creative" lawsuits against Democratic party members? Will DOJ hot shot lawyers, hired by Bondi, step down to help run lawfare against lefty defendants?
A couple of years ago this would have bothered the hell out of me. Now, the outrage on the left makes me smile. You guys earned all this and more.
Hey, Mr. Veteran Prosecutor who talked to a friend: If your boss told you to cut a deal to not bring charges against one potential criminal, to garner that person's assistance in targeting other criminals that DOJ HQ deems higher priority, would you feel forced to resign? Give me a break; you do it all the time! So make your case: how is the Adams matter different?
To use an analogy, this is like some bully beating the crap out of someone at recess every day for a week, and then crying to the teacher when somone hits back - once.
One veteran prosecutor told a friend late Thursday that he was not answering phone calls, in hopes of avoiding a demand to take an action that would force his resignation...."
Boldly speaking truth to power.
The case against Adams was nowhere near as strong as the bribery case that could have been brought against Joe Biden regarding Ukraine, which had direct evidence of a request in the form of an email, and the on video admission of Biden's follow through.
Where was the DoJ in all of this? Well, studiously ignoring it.
Biden's using DOJ to destroy his enemies = Not a NYT's story
Trump investigating Biden DOJ lawyers for doing that = A NYT's story.
Democrats doing somthing wroing = not a story
Republicans pouncing = now that's a story
"I think that Emerson said that "If you strike at the king, you must kill him."
Good to know, I always thought it was the Omar in "The Wire":
Ayo, lesson here, Bey. You come at the king, you best not miss.
AP angry about Gulf of America all over again.
I like the idea of ignoring propaganda pr and go right on firing and prosecuting. The tiny fraction of the American public that doesn’t approve will get over it…
NYC das running on a platform of “I will get Trump” and then making up stuff with the help of the White House and doj to do just that. Boo hoo. The doj is rotten to its core. Faster please.
The focus is on decisions to prosecute, not "investigate."
Yet, the "veteran prosecutor" seems to believe they should be above investigation.
Trump was smart to start the fight over a Democrat, Eric Adams.
And from all the nashing of teeth, it starts to sounds like there may be evidence that the "veteran prosecutor" did answer the phone when Merrick Garland or the White House called about Adams after he broke party ranks on illegal immigration.
in hopes of avoiding a demand to take an action that would force his resignation.
Like his co-workers who were fired for not getting vaccinated?
Wait. The highly politicized DOJ is complaining that DJT is politicizing the DOJ? Do I have that right?
I'm sure that Freder, Mark and Gadfly(reads like three books to a bizarre lefty bible), will be here to declare their outrage.
It was just four years ago when a prominent lefty said that it was kind of amazing how little consequence there had been for banning a sitting US president from social media.
@Jaq, unless, of course, you think getting Trump 2.0 in 2024 is a consequence.
I'm sure that Freder, Mark and Gadfly(reads like three books to a bizarre lefty bible), will be here to declare their outrage.
@Rusty, they’re just waiting for their coordinated talking points to show up in their inboxes.
"the brazen politicization of the department under Mr. Trump and his team" LOL, as they say. Nothing like it under wingman Holder. Or under Merrick Lawfare Garland. Oh, and let's check with Ted Stevens, IYKWIM. Tit for tat. Unfortunate but inevitable.
Obama deliberately corrupted the DOJ and I've wondered how it could be cleaned up. Resignations may be a good start.
Shouldn't this be a Deweaponization Working Group?
Biden already had an unofficial, but powerful Weaponization Working Group.
Making an official one now isn't good optics/acoustics.
I’m missing the part where dropping a prosecution against a black liberal NYC mayor would call upon the “resilience” of anyone “against a retribution-minded president”. It doesn’t compute.

From what I recall of the Adams indictment, it was some pretty thin gruel, the official misconduct equivalent of driving 62 in a 55 mph zone. This is the hill these "career" prosecutors want to die on?
Adam's was targeted by the corrupt democrat party as soon as he began complaining about the massive numbers of Bidens/Soros' ILLEGAL immigrants taking over NYC.
Big no no.

Maybe DOJ doesn't think Adams can be convicted with a NYC Jury. Or that the case is weak. Plenty of good reasons to stop a case. Maybe they looked at Biden's classified documents case, and are following that example.
There was nothing in the order to dismiss that cited any of that. There was a vague assertion (no proof cited) that the indictment was political. But the order also explicitly stated as a reason was that Trump needed Adams to help him with rounding up undocumented immigrants in NYC. And the DOJ says they are going to review the indictment after the mayoral election in November. If Adams doesn't play ball or loses, he is fucked.
This is absolutely, unambiguously Trump abusing the DOJ to achieve his political goals.
"So refusing to continue to prosecute someone, who was targeted for political purposes, is a an act of retribution? The NYT is the paper of record for Idiocracy."

“ This is absolutely, unambiguously Trump abusing the DOJ to achieve his political goals”
Question for FF, if Trump made a promise to enforce immigration law, and now he is enforcing immigration law, or is moving to do that, is that a political goal? Or is that just him enforcing the rule of law as he swore to do?

Not a single federal prosecutor resigned after Joe Biden pardoned his own son, which was a direct slap in the face to all the work the DOJ had done.
So spare me the sudden “principles” being found by these “career prosecutors.”

Suspending an indictment to get Eric Adams to cooperate with his plans (and not dismissing it with prejudice) is absolutely using Lawfare and much worse than anything Biden might have done.
Althouse is being disgusting by somehow implying this behavior is acceptable. (And yes Althouse, I know you will claim you never said it was acceptable, but will all know that is just more of your bullshit).
Democrat party sycophants are cult members. The modern democrat party is 100% corrupt and their adherents are 100% corruption supporting/corruption ignoring cultists.
"Current and former Justice Department officials view those claims as merely an excuse to justify the brazen politicization of the department under Mr. Trump and his team.
I guess Mr. Biden brazenly politicizing the department didn't turn out to be as good of an idea as you idiot leftists originally thought, did it?
"It has left many employees angry and worried for the department’s future."
Well, that's a shame.
If only the far left NYT and these angry federal employees hadn’t gleefully burned up whatever credibility they had over the last eight years. Oh well.
We need immigrant lawyers, to do the jobs Americans won’t do,
“ Suspending an indictment to get Eric Adams to cooperate with his plans (and not dismissing it with prejudice) is absolutely using Lawfare and much worse than anything Biden might have done.”
FF, C- for one giant conclusory statement. Conditional non-prosecution agreements are common place not extra extraordinary.
Turnabout is not fair play. Nobody ever said it was gonna be fair. So the Dems better damn well realize that the best outcome for them is to push for success in Bondi's stated purpose, deweaponization of the DOJ. Anyone lamenting that process is a part of the problem and should be sent packing.
Every executive has to prioritize the tasks within their missions. Clearly Adams is extremely valuable to evacuating illegal immigrants. If Trump has to dismiss these relatively unimportant charges against Adams to get the immigrants out, he can and will do so. It’s completely his prerogative.
Bove’s letter to that AUSA accepting her resignation is a chef’s kiss to the whole episode. She was completely demolished, and with her own words and actions. There’s clearly a new Sheriff in town!!
"and much worse than anything Biden might have done."
Biden pardoned not one but several murderers of children Fredo. You scream about bias sticks in everyone else's eyes while ignoring the giant sequoia lodged in your own.
Don't go anywhere though, please...it's too much fun rustling your jimmies.
Racist White Supremacist Nazi Regime refuses to prosecute black political opponent.

Field Marshall Freder: "Suspending an indictment to get Eric Adams to cooperate with his plans (and not dismissing it with prejudice) is absolutely using Lawfare and much worse than anything Biden might have done."
No, its not.
Not even close.
Not even in the same universe.
So far beyond a category error it reads like parody.
Just like all your other moronic missives.
But do go ahead and explain the biden pardon for the drug kingpin that murdered an 8 year old and his mother for having witnessed his crimes.
Biden pardoned not one but several murderers of children Fredo.
Liar. And I know it is confusing because Althouse conflates commutation with pardon, even though she should know better.
Death sentences were commuted to life without parole.
Again, I will stress, you are lying about it.
But do go ahead and explain the biden pardon for the drug kingpin that murdered an 8 year old and his mother for having witnessed his crimes.
Like I said to Ride Space Mountain, you are a fucking liar too.
Their weaponization of the DOJ was (D)ifferent....
"And I know it is confusing because Althouse conflates commutation with pardon...."
Not sure where you're remembering that from, but the constitutional text just says "pardon." You have to derive the power to commute from the word "pardon," so I don't know why you're choosing to make an asshole out of yourself over this.
Uh oh, Fredo added "fucking" for that oh so special emphasis stressing he hasn't been called on his double-standard. Say "fucking" more Fredo. Every time you do we are one more teensy tiny bit convinced that orange-man is very bad and shall vote the way you want us to.
You're so close. Just a few more million posts and you'll get there.

Just a few weeks ago, when I pointed this out, you basically (in a post) told me to fuck off if I thought you should have separate tags for commutation and pardon. If you wish, I can dig through your old posts and find it, but I don't think your memory is that bad.
I'm the asshole? You are the one who lets all your lying commenters to make patently false statements and you don't care about the significant difference. But don't confuse a vulva with a vagina, that is a big no-no in Althouse's world.
Field Marshall Freder: "Like I said to Ride Space Mountain, you are a fucking liar too."
Its not my fault you are doubling down on your standard requisite stupidity.
And speaking of liars, since you that is at the top of your "skill" stack, did you ever locate any comment from me where I called for physical violence against political enemies? Something you claimed I did all the time and would surely do again.
Still waiting naturally...since nothing of the sort actually exists.
So, back to the discussion of lying, eh?...
https://www.nbcconnecticut.com/news/local/biden-grants-clemency-man-convicted-1999-killing-mother-son-bridgeport/3480717/
Yes Biden granted clemency to this killer. He had completed the murder sentence of 25 years and was in jail on a drug charge, which is what Biden granted clemency for. BUT Biden is the fucking liar, Freder, not the people here who believed the headline (and the first full page of results all had a similar headline). Biden claimed these were all non-violent offenders but they were not. This guy is a convicted murderer. That's not a non-violent guy.
Freder, it's going to be a long four years if you intend to maintain this high level of dudgeon. As the evil Ben Shapiro (et al.) says, go touch some grass, man.
I don't know why you're choosing to make an asshole out of yourself over this.
Never noticed Freder needing a reason to be an asshole. It's just what he is.
Adams would never have been indicted if he stayed within the Biden reservation. His faults seem to have been not taking his free trips for pleasure and not tying them in with some work-related activity, and indulging in the kind of favor trading that is common among politicians. As is so often the case, the alleged cover-up made things worse.
I wouldn't call suppressing the indictment or dismissing it "lawfare," but it does seem like wiping the slate clean completely would be worse than deciding not to move forward with the prosecution. Would Trump move forward with the indictment in the future if Adams crosses him? We'll see, but it seems unlikely. That hasn't been how Trump rolls. He wants his persecutors disciplined and perhaps brought to justice, but he doesn't play lawfare against dissenters in the way that the Biden administration did.
I'm almost afraid to get in the way of Freder having a melt down. I do hope it continues.
I think at a superficial, headline level, the notion of dropping the Adams case while also bringing charges against Hochul looks bad. I expect the progressive media to make as much hay about it as they can to sway public opinion. I think they mistake they are making is that they'll win over that public opinion before the facts come out about NY's spending to house illegal and dangerous criminals at the expense of taxpayers and other social needs of the citizenry. AG Bondi has given the Democrats a shovel ready project, and the Democrats are happy to dig a hole.
"Be a good Democrat, Eric" - Joe Biden.
"One veteran prosecutor told a friend..."
Now that's some solid sourcing, right there.
All the news that's fit to print.
"... in hopes of avoiding a demand to take an action that would force his resignation."
Makes sense. Pam Bondi seems to have her knickers in a twist about something or other, but I'm guessing she'll forget all about it in a day or two, and he can go back to schmoozing on the phone all day with his golf buddies.
"I am shocked, SHOCKED to find that there is politics going on in this establishment!"
He should have just fired every last one of them. I thought that was SOP now.
It is concerning that the dismissal has very much the look of a nakedly political action. One would like at least a fig leaf of legal justification. But I am reminded of the exchange during Bondi's confirmation hearings, when some pontificating Democrat told her that she could not possibly examine all the J6 cases individually. And she replied that she would have all the staff she needed. She got hot!
Biden already had an unofficial, but powerful Weaponization Working Group.
Making an official one now isn't good optics/acoustics.
And when the libs raise their predictable bleat about it, the world will learn that the "Weaponization" that was going on under Biden is what is being investigated.
We are at the FAFO stage. What was sauce for the Biden Goose is sauce for the Trump gander. The DOJ should never have been weaponized--but it was, and here we are.
"while also bringing charges against Hochul looks"
They're not criminal charges against her person.
JD Vance's rip-roarin' speech in Munich described multiple European lawfare/free speech abuses but merely mentioned ours in passing. I saw 5 minutes on X, but there may be more of it.
"But don't confuse a vulva with a vagina, that is a big no-no in Althouse's world."
Freder, when they let you "grab 'em by the pussy", that's the vulva. When you're a star, a little vulva-grabbing is just par for the course. All in a day's work. Heck, they actually enjoy it, whatever they may say. But you go grabbing vaginas, and "Sorry, I got confused" is not going to cut it. I mean, maybe if you're Tom Cruise or something. But he's a Scientologist, they study for years to get to do that.
Without reading a word of this New York Times article, I can safely assume that it is filled with outright lies, editorializing insertions of "falsely" and "without evidence", and large dollops of self-serving spin and propaganda directly from the mouths of fearful bureaucrats calling in favors from their pet parrots in the ancient, dying news-media establishment.
I hope the Times goes defunct, and the too, without the USAID money and other government subsidies for slanted news and propaganda that are drying up under the scrutiny of DOGE.
Death to the old Mockingbird Media. Death to Pravda on the Potomac and Izvestia on the Hudson. Unemployment and poverty for the stenographer scum who serve as handmaidens to the monster enemy occupation government instead of doing independent journalism.
[That last post should read "I hope the Times goes defunct, and the Washington Post too...]
The first DA who resigned, Sassoon, was a Trump (interim) appointee, and supposedly a conservative Republican (Federalist Society, FWIW).
But if everything is a "crisis," than nothing is. They've completely devalued the term.
From what I recall of the Adams indictment, it was some pretty thin gruel, the official misconduct equivalent of driving 62 in a 55 mph zone. This is the hill these "career" prosecutors want to die on?
Freder: Well, your recollection is 100% wrong.
He got free upgrades on some international flights. That's so much worse than Biden's "10% for the Big Guy."
"The DOJ should never have been weaponized--but it was, and here we are."
I hope that isn't actually the state of play. As Mattman26 noted, the charges against Adams were lame, and their dismissal might well be justified. But if Bondi is going to be as political as Garland, it's going to be a long four years. At least.
It is amusing, however, to imagine Bragg, James and Hochul lying awake, trying to figure out just exactly what Adams has on them. Plenty, is my guess. Sleep tight!
@Freder: Suspending an indictment to get Eric Adams to cooperate with his plans (and not dismissing it with prejudice) is absolutely using Lawfare and much worse than anything Biden might have done.
Read https://www.documentcloud.org/documents/25527112-boves-response-to-acting-us-attorneys-resignation/
Perhaps you might want to revisit the assertion this is lawfare worse than anything Biden has done.
a "showdown" and another "crisis" ...
Cry harder NYT bitches
Interesting.
'Asked by reporters Thursday whether he asked that the charges be dismissed, Trump said: "No, I didn't. I know nothing about it."'
"you're fired or you can save face by handing in your resignation". OK I'll take door number 2.
Frédérique said...

Ahem, the Biden DOJ bringing the charges against Adams was arguably the worst form of "lawfare" of all.
What "plans" are you talking about? Trump doesn't need "dismissed without prejudice" leverage to get a NYC mayor to follow immigration law.
That "Frédérique" was blogger autofill, but I kinda like it.
Hey people at the DoJ: you worked for a corrupt piece of shit for the last 4 years. If that didn't make you quit, but Trump refusing to continue Garland's political prosecutions does, then don't let the door hit you on the ass on the way out.
Two things to know about teh Adams indictment:
1: It was obviously ONLY issued because he got crosswise with the Biden Admin
2: They were ordered to get a dismiss without prejudice. Which means it can be re-filed later in a way that doesn't reek of politics.
So if that makes you quit?
FOAD
Ole Freder here saying the Adams matter is worse than the last four years of corrupt prosecutions and assassination attempts is pretty damned funny I gotta say.
Bondi needs to do this, this time around. Last time around, both the DOJ and FBI, had declared war on Trump. AG Sessions should have fired the prosecutors and FBI agents involved in taking out his NSA, LTG Flynn, on the spot, for cause, then fought them on their pensions. Put the fear of their creator in the rest of his employees. The Obstruction charge was illegal (there was never a good argument for materiality), and the FARA charges against him and his son (with a pregnant wife) were novel in that at most they were usually treated with a fine. Flynn was out, the Intelligence Community was safe from the secrets he knew, and they all knew that they could do whatever they anted under and against Trump with impunity. So, for the rest of his term, and throughout the Biden interregnum, the DOJ and FBI attacked him, and his supporters, with impunity, with plenty of help from the Intelligence Community. Thousands languished in prison for showing up to peacefully protest a fraudulent election, and FBI agents rummaged through Melania’s underwear drawer. Knowing what we know know, and a Bondi instead of a Sessions as Trump’s AG, the Biden years could have been skipped, if the AG had just stomped down hard on the Flynn Resisters.
We’ve seen it in countless westerns. The new sheriff comes into town, kicks butt with the baddest people there, and everyone living happily after. The Rock in Walking Tall, walking in with a 4x4. That’s what’s going on in the DOJ right now. It’s what has to be done.
Yes, there will be some collateral damage. But it’s like Mohs surgery for skin cancer. The surgeon cuts out what he knows to be cancer, then using biopsies around the surgery site, expands it, until the biopsies come up clean. Just cutting out the cells that look cancerous, and not checking the edges, often makes it far worse, causing the cancer to essentially explode, when exposed to air.
"Asshole" is kinda Freder's default position. Todays barely coherent, nearly correct screed is even more proof that DOGE is getting closer to his department.
I believe that Adams was also hit with a suit under the phony baloney E. Jean Carroll law passed to get Trump, so clearly DJT might have some sympathy with the Adams.
The doctor warned me that the medication he prescribed yesterday might make me grumpy, but I am very bothered that Althouse does not push back against the word “retribution.” Is there some way to see to it that lawfare never happens again without punishing those who gleefully engaged in it? Is it retribution to send a convicted criminal to prison?
From where I sit one of the most important things Trump needs to accomplish in this term is to end lawfare in the United States forever.
If they failed to resign during the partisan wars of the Biden admin, they've ceded the moral high ground. Cry harder.
"Is there some way to see to it that lawfare never happens again without punishing those who gleefully engaged in it?"
No. If there are no significant consequences, the left will be right back at it just as soon as they have the opportunity. Unless you believe they've grown consciences in the meantime- yeah, that *could* happen. Heh.
The response to the left's lawfare needs to be instructive in such a fashion that people two hundred years from now will feel a chill run down the back of their neck if they even think of repeating the left's recent actions.
I genuinely don’t understand why someone would want to come to my blog and be disrespectful to me. Honestly, it feels like there is something wrong with you and I feel sorry for you, but I don’t think you should continue to write on my blog in that style. I’m speaking respectfully to you, and it’s my blog and you’re coming here. Does your behavior make sense even to you?
Go easy on poor Fredo.
After all, he and the rest of the public parasites cannot work remotely anymore, and they know they can't download their Adam Westbrook kiddie porn on their goverment office computers without getting caught.
That's why his posts are all over the M.A.P.
"cannot work remotely anymore"
Work?
I genuinely don’t understand why someone would want to come to my blog and be disrespectful to me. Sorry, I didn't realize that the only person you cannot disrespect on this site is you. The very next post accuses me of a very serious felony (possessing child pornography on a government computer). I have never called you an asshole. You have called me an asshole numerous times.
I should end with some nice profanity, but I will give you that much respect.
Freder, you're coming across as kind of unhinged. You're too invested in your position to the point you missed that the child murderer in Connecticut was released from prison by Biden, an easy fact to look up. Relax, it's just politics.
Anyone in the DOJ who "was not answering phone calls, in hopes of avoiding a demand to take an action that would force his resignation...." is obviously prejudiced and shouldn't be working in the DOJ.
The executive power is vested in the President. It’s good to see these resignations. Trump should fire all the prosecutors he wants to fire.
Suspending an indictment to get Eric Adams to cooperate with his plans (and not dismissing it with prejudice) is absolutely using Lawfare and much worse than anything Biden might have done.
Dumbass doesn't even know the definition of lawfare.
so I don't know why you're choosing to make an asshole out of yourself over this.
Because he knows no other way. It's who he is.
“ Because he knows no other way. It's who he is.”
Freder has participated here for many years, and has been mostly civil over that time.
