Here in the lower latitudes I had to chip open the bird bath the last couple days. A grateful Cardinal has been keeping vigil, regretting not flying more south and hoping for warmer days ahead. Apple says they’re not coming any time soon…

Donald Trump famously proposed using a nuclear bomb to wipe out a hurricane. I wonder if the LA Fire Dept. can use explosives (not nuclear) to put out the bigger fires? The firefighters don't have any water because DEI geniuses emptied the reservoirs a couple of years ago for "minor" repairs, so the fire fighters pretty much have to try anything at this point.

If you wear waterproof socks it's not only good for avoiding chiggers in the summer but lets you walk in snow in crocs without discomfort when the shoes fill with snow. When you come indoors, the snow melts and you're good as new. No wet socks.

You can put water in a bowl with a shielded candle under it and a circle of surface will stay ice-free, the size of the circle being whatever size matches the heat loss from the circle and heat applied by the candle. A box with a hole for the bowl and a couple of small air holes will give a nice place for a candle.

Is it true; Looters... unburdened the Vice President's home in California?

Does anything work is that forsaken state?

It could take some time to figure out what jurisdiction will be in charge of bomb inspection. In the old days, Hollywood be counted on situations like this. But now, every other moving picture they make, bombs spectacularly. The courts will probably have to step in.

If it wasn't for the stars home burning down, the mainstream news would not stay with the story at all. It would just be another Lahaina, on Maui.

It's worth noting there are 2 major fires in LA county, one north of Pasadena hasn't had as much attention but the town of Alta Dena (JPL is nearby) is destroyed. They didn't have the same water access issues of the Palisades and it shows how much the fire itself just was beyond the scope of fighting with the current conditions. Doesn't mean there isn't right critique about the mistakes made, but even if everything wa run exactly perfect this would have been a devastating fire.

Heated bird baths are not all that expensive. You can buy one via the Althouse Amazon Portal. I’ve had one for years, set up on the deck after the first freeze

If people could sneak in to steal then they could sneak in to leave behind a remotely detonated IED. The Secret Service should be more alert.

I wish DJT would stop squandering the goodwill that he has from his election mandate by going around calling Gavin N. "new scum" and saying So Cal is being "schlonged' by incompetents. So Cal is getting schlonged by incompetence but people expect the POTUS to be above name calling, especially when the fires are still burning the ashes are still hot and people are still crying and bleeding. Making fun of people's names is infantile. If DJT wants gravitas he should act like he has the right stuff to be POTUS not like some ass clown talking s*** in a Queens pool hall. My random thoughts on a Sunday night

Democrats don't care about anything other than the (D) behind the name but not everybody agrees with that method of evaluating politicians. Maybe if Newsom did something worthy of respect, he'd get some, you think?

Gospace said...

Actually if everything was run perfectly- it wouldn't have been a devastating fire. The brush and undergrowth would have been cleared on a regular basis. Homeowners wouldn't be criminally charged for clearing out dried underbrush on or adjacent to their property because it's natural. Natural kills. Where you have forest management- you have beautiful forests. Where you let nature run free- you don't.

The water seems to evaporate fairly rapidly. Good idea to put it on your deck for ease of topping it up.

Gavin Newsome is posting his webpage as a site for truthful news on the fires. It's full of half facts, deceptions, and self-congratulatory stories, as well as some whopper falsehoods, like he 'didn't cut the budget by $100 million (it was more). It includes a charity site if people want to contribute to help the victims of the fire. This site links to ActBlue, the DNC fundraising bundler which will take a 4% cut for the DNC before 'helping the victims'. That's the guy you object to being 'called names'. I can think of a few more that aren't nearly so polite.

James Woods got mocked as receiving "karma" for losing his house as a conservative. Never mind that most of the houses that burned were owned by lefty limousine liberals.

Karma indeed.

@DSR: This was news back in 2016 and 2017. It led to TDS and lots of infantile behavior all around. The people voted again, and most have recovered from TDS. They accept that they'll be living with a childish, cranky Archie Bunker as President. Many recent TDS sufferers even accept that he is 1,000x more effective in the role than the sack of potatoes POTUS who was held up by strings from 2021 to 2025.

All the people complaining about private firefighters really aren't familiar with the different ways fire departments around the country are organized, financed, trained, and their responsibilities.

Example- I now live in ruralville NY. It has a volunteer fire department. The firefighters are not paid. The VFD is a taxing district. I have to pay the taxes- or I lose my house at a tax auction. Even though reality 101 is- if I get a structure fire in a 50 year old house with 50 year old T1-11 siding on it- it's a total loss before the VFD arrives.

When I lived in an unincorporated area of SC- not part of any town or village, just the county, we also were served by a VFD. And the volunteer part meant just that- volunteer. No tax money. They were allowed to organizer as VFDs, but one standard they had to follow was- when they responded to a fire- they had to attempt to rescue any humans inside the structure. Once a year they came around and told us our expected contribution, and we wrote a check. Since there was a FD available, not being covered by them meant no fire insurance. Even if you thought you were paying fire insurance premiums... If they showed up and you hadn't contributed- they would stand around and watch all your belongings burn up, and keep the fire from spreading to adjacent house- that had licked in their share. Whoops, didn't kick in an am embed flies up and lands on your roof? Hope you're home and your garden hose can spray up there... Couldn't lose my house to a tax auction by not licking in, but I would be gambling that I didn't have a fire to lose it to.

The history of fire departments shows they were originally all insurance companies- and you paid for coverage. The freeloaded problem appeared in row houses in many municipalities. Multiple unites would fork over the money to the insurance companies- and they'd have to put out fire's in freeloading units to protect their paying customers. So FDs soon became government financed with tax money.

There are numerous private FDs and even private police departments for large building complexes. Virtually every major college has their own private PD for policing their own campus. Keeping out local, county, and state police. To keep their students from being arrested for underage drinking or drug use... And it's a PD with full police powers, they're not security guards.

Railroad police are also a real thing- and among the few agencies with interstate police powers.

The government doesn't have to run things. A lot of things they do could be run privately. If government got out of the way. Government didn't run that NG line to your house. But in NY, Dictator Hochul and her DemoncRAT colleagues are doing their best to keep new homeowners from getting one of those lines...

It's good all day, and you replace the candle then anyway.

Roman fire departments would race out and offer to buy the house. Private enterprise at its finest.

Well look at this. You know who has been making more and more public statements in line with views on foreign policy which I have come to accept as probably the closest to the truth? Views I thought that would forever stay outside the mainstream? Donald John Trump. After Trump made the comments on how the West killed the peace deal between Russia and Ukraine a month or two after the war started, because Biden wanted the war, Trump posted Prof Jeffery Sachs yesterday on Truth Social criticizing Netanyahu.

https://theduran.com/will-trump-deliver-peace-jeffrey-sachs-alexander-mercouris-glenn-diesen/

Sachs is on Alex Mercouris's channel and if you are actually interested in what Trump thinks on foreign policy, you could learn by listening to this guy whom Trump just amplified, a lot more than you can learn by accepting the neocon propaganda that is fed to the rubes over at Instapundit, anyway.

A circumstantial case can be made that Netanyahu tried to convince Trump to go along with starting a war with Iran, and when Trump wouldn't bite, he went to the doddering old fool currently with his finger on the button and tried to get him to start the war with Iran just a couple weeks before leaving office, which has likely pissed off Trump when he heard about it, which he did, because it was in the press.

I don't even care about arguing this stuff anymore. I know it might all go to hell, and maybe Kakistocracy's favored forces in the govt will get their war with Iran, but I am glad that a man who genuinely wants peace is going to be in the White House in a matter of days.

I suppose you could blanket the ground with liquid nitrogen and let the evaporation displace the o2 and cool the fuel, it you may kill some people along the way. You could not use co2 because that would cause global warming.

If the bird just wants a bath you could use brine. If it needs to be potable you could set a bowl on top of of your gas grill with an aluminum foil cover with holes and run it on low, I bet a 20 dollar propane tank would be cheaper than candles.
