Kakistocracy said...: Bannon was the only strategist working at the national level in the summer and fall of 2016 in either presidential campaign. The Democrats were either narrow-shoulder technocrats or party hacks. Much of the Republican political class was similar. There was little sense that neoliberalism was in fact the big fat target on the Democratic side of the issues landscape.

Bannon's strategy of yoking the white identification electorate of the South with international-trade-disaffected Midwest working and middle class voters was brilliantly innovative.

The weak point to Bannon's strategy was getting the Republican party establishment--totally dominated by its traditional establishment and the financial establishment (the always dominant Goldman Sachs wing)--to actually deliver concrete economic benefits to working and middle class people in the Midwest (and elsewhere).

The coming debt limit debate, tax reform, and appropriation bills are going to highlight that the Republican party in Washington wants to cut average Americans' entitlements and health care security, reward the high income and wealthy, and shift domestic spending over to the military.

So the winning Bannon strategy has been completely sold out by the Republican establishment working in both the White House and the Congress.

Bannon is going to be working in a target-rich environment and each and every improvement in reach that he is able to give to his message is going to sink incumbent Republican boats.
