We were trying to see the comet. And we did know it was in the west (not the east, like the moon). But we're going to have to try a different location tonight.
There was that one in the 90s what came very close to the earth. On a dark sky it looked like the cartoon drawings of comets with the defined head and splayed tail. Halleys didn’t look like that in ‘86 but perhaps historically it flies closer and why there’s so much lore about it/them in the history of man…
Americans will soon drink deeply… the leftwing tears will be spilled, anguished cries of disappointment will ring out, men’s jumpers and women’s yoga pants will be well-rended.
39 million is the LEGAL resident population of CA… and don’t forget that of that 39 million, a large percentage are not qualified for Medi-Cal due to age, so it’s even worse than it looks at first glance.
I don’t know much about the Lake Superior shore, but the yard sign inversion also takes place in FIB row on the north shore of the Door County peninsula.
"Believe your eyes people! Believe what you see is happening!" The pilots of what appears to be an unmarked Sikorsky UH-60 Black Hawk helicopter generated a massive downwash, also known as rotor wash, that sent tents and aid flying in all directions at a volunteer supply zone operated by private citizens in western North Carolina. This action by the helicopter pilots is up for debate, with many on X believing this was an intentional act of sabotage by the federal government. There are no official statements by local, state, or federal governments about the incident. Flight tracking data shows that the Black Hawk is military-owned. "This is a United States Military Blackhawk. Squawk 6453, call sign: FURY147"
[Side note: I've been tracking aircraft activity near Asheville since the storm moved on, and saw the paucity of civilian aircraft for the first few days afterward (due in part to FAA flight restrictions because Biden flew over to scope out to the damage, but continued a few days beyond that), and two military aircraft were seen patrolling the region, one a Sikorsky UH-60A Blackhawk, and the other a Boeing CH-47F Chinook. Both of those were flying with US Army identification. Beyond that, civilian helicopters included several privately owned aircraft - even one with Canadian registry - and Samaritan's Purse.]

Corporate media is lying (viz. supra). The government is lying. The regime is lying. Believe the worst. You won't be far off."
I believe you'll have to travel outside the city to see it. I'm not positive of this, I haven't tried in the city myself. At the very least, it will be better outside the city. I observed it at Donald County Park on Wednesday night. There were about 10 people there, who all saw it.
It is a bit challenging. Its brightness is fading and the moon is full. The best window of opportunity should be about 7pm. It will be dark enough. Sunset is 6:10 and moon rise 6:40.
You will need binoculars. I was just barely able to detect it naked eye after I knew where to look. However, conditions were not great Wednesday night; we had high clouds dimming the comet. As of right now, tonight's forecast looks ideal.
It would aid you greatly if you had a star map. I star-hopped right to it, but I've got a lot of experience doing that. For some strange reason, my goto guy on-line for comet finder-charts chose to do a big fancy, dumbed-down video production for this comet, but neglected to provide a serviceable chart. I found this one that should work. To get started, if you draw a line between Venus and Arcturus, the comet is well above that line. Start at Venus and travel along that line about 30% of the way, then take a right angle and travel up. A little over halfway to the comet you'll encounter a very pretty gold/orange star pair, Yed Prior and Yed Posterior. Keep going and the comet should be obvious. It's near lamba-Ophiuchi.
On Wednesday night, in the binoculars, the comet nucleus was very bright with a fat tail, maybe 5-degrees long, in the direction of 11:00. I'm sure it would have been even better without the clouds.
Check out today's Astronomy Picture of the Day for a spectacular photo of the comet (fair warning: you won't be seeing that from your observations! That's a stacked photo from a dark site).
Oh, and try using averted vision, especially when trying to observe it naked eye. Don't look directly at it, but rather a little bit to the side. The eye is more sensitive to dim objects when you do this.
"To get started, if you draw a line between Venus and Arcturus, the comet is well above that line. Start at Venus and travel along that line about 30% of the way, then take a right angle and travel up. A little over halfway to the comet you'll encounter a very pretty gold/orange star pair, Yed Prior and Yed Posterior. Keep going and the comet should be obvious. It's near lamba-Ophiuchi."
A little more guidance. Face West and determine the Venus-Arcturus line naked eye (without the binoculars). Then determine the (roughly) 30% location along that line. Now, take the binoculars, start at the line, and begin slowly sweeping up. The Yed Prior / Yed Posterior pair are very obvious because of their striking colors. If you find them, you are almost there.
Also, if you use the star map I linked to, realize that you have to rotate the map (for example, if you are viewing it on an iPad) to match the sky. "Up" on the map is not automatically "up" on the sky. In this case, the map/iPad will have to be rotated about 45-degrees clockwise.

Check out today's
Astronomy Picture of the Day for a spectacular photo of the comet (fair warning: you won't be seeing that from your observations! That's a stacked photo from a dark site).
Good luck and Clear Skies!
Oh, and try using averted vision, especially when trying to observe it naked eye. Don't look directly at it, but rather a little bit to the side. The eye is more sensitive to dim objects when you do this.

Original Mike: the eye is more sensitive to dim objects when you use averted vision?
This explains everyone giving Kamala side-eye….
