I wouldn't add up the storm surge damage until the storm is over and actually made landfall. Meanwhile St Lucie County- on the east side of FL, is already suffering severe damage from Milton spawned tornadoes. The St Lucie sheriff's dept HQ was destroyed b y a tornado.

ST Lucie is south of where one of my sons lives. He just sent some pics of St Lucie flooding from the rain that's arrived before Milton make landfall.

Lots of damaging things about big storms. Wind, storm surge, and massive amounts of rain.

Damage is going to be widespread. My son was counting on the eye passing north of him, Not right over him as it appears it's going to do.

Every webcam that I'm monitoring in the area closest to the eye, which just made landfall south of Sarasota, Florida shows that all the lights are still on.

Yes it is raining heavily. Yes, there has been low-level flooding along beach areas. There may even be short-lived tornado damage.

No, you are not going to die. No, Tampa Bay isn't going to be drowned in 15 feet of seawater. Nor were you ever GOING to die. Your government lied to you in order to manipulate you into doing something that helps THEM ... but not YOU.

In a Danish newspaper, there is a quote from a Danish harbormaster who was responsible for the area where the Nordstream pipeline blew up. He noticed a couple of ships in his area of responsibly, unidentified, and with their transponders turned off, so he headed out in his launch, and as he approached, he was warned off as he discovered that the ships were US Navy. Four days later, ka boom!

Of course Joe Biden promised to "bring an end" to Nordstream, whether Germany, which owned half of it, and Russia, which owned the other half, objected or not. "We will get it done" is what he said when asked what would happen if the Germans objected.

Milton was originally predicted coming ashore north of Tampa- which would have been the worst case scenario for storm surge in Tamps. Instead, Cape Coral and Fort Myers Beach are getting the major storm surge.

Hurricane predictions are just that- predictions. As is any weather forecast. Scientific weather guessing. The further out the predictions, the less reliable.

Climate change prediction is simply total hoax. Especially since we know the earth has been warmer in the past, and the warmer it has been, the better it has been for life.

I was living in the Redlands off Mowry and SW 202nd -- which is a bit west of Homestead during Andrew. Back when it was all tomato fields.

Many insurers have already exited the Florida market, and this will cause more to exit as well. Insurance prices have already skyrocketed, and this will only cause more price increases — if you can even get insurance.

At this point I wouldn't be surprised if annual homeowners insurance premiums rise to around 10% of the value of the property annually for homes near the coast. With three hurricanes a season becoming the new normal — and maybe half of those major hurricanes — there's a 10% chance a property will sustain major damage in any given year.

The new normal for hurricanes in Florida is going to devastate property values and ultimately the Florida economy. The weather is nice outside the hurricanes and the summer heat, but who wants to live in a perennial disaster cleanup/rebuilding zone and when you never know when your house will be destroyed?

I have friends in Charlotte County whose power is out. That's just anecdotal, of course. I'm in Lee County, well inland, and I'm only getting 30 mph winds gusting to 50, so far. Power remains on. One thing about Lee County is that the entire county got slammed by Hurricane Ian two years ago, everything that was going to blow down already blew down, and the electrical grid was mostly rebuilt after that storm, so I'm optimistic that I may not lose power. I've still done all the prep work in case it does go out, though.

First off, prayers for anyone who couldn't get out of the path of Milton, and thanksgiving that it at least appears to have taken a less destructive path than originally anticipated.

Per Stephen Green at Instapundit, reporting info from Stephen (redsteeze) Miller et al, the kerfuffle over Harris's answer to the question about whether Israel is an ally has taken several interesting turns. As expected, analysis of the aired show confirms that the answer given on the teaser clip posted a few days ago on the Face The Nation feed was edited from the broadcast, and an answer to an entirely different question swapped in (though the question was not edited). The new answer not only removed the controversial equivocation about Israel but also any mention that the US would aid Israel or that Israel was justified in responding to the attacks. Which looks like an interesting choice given the ongoing controversy over the Ta-Nehisi Coates interview on the same network.

The official CBS transcript matches the broadcast and does not include the words from the teaser clip, indicating that CBS has not released an unedited transcript of the interview (wonder what else was left on the cutting room floor).

True about the anecdotes on who has power and who doesn’t. My point: A few days ago there was talk of changing the hurricane scale by adding a category 6 (200+ mph) because it appeared this hurricane was going to hit that number and would prove the worst storm in a century.

This may prove to be a terrible storm and I don’t want to minimize that, but when the prognosticators overstate the hazard two things happen: they lose credibility and people will hunker down as opposed to evacuating in the future.

I think part of the problem is that they have greatly advanced the ability to measure and gather data by a significant amount. There is a clear monetary reason to do this: It leads to better forecasting, better deployment of resources, better preparation, and so on. They do much more now than just fly planes through the storm. They deploy drop sondes that fall through the air column, collecting and transmitting as they go. They drop current riders that measure surface currents, measure currents through the water column, measure wave data. The satellite coverage is log cycles better.

The flip side of this, is that implementation of activities is now more tailored to the better forecasting, whereas in the past, maybe it was treated more conservatively because of the higher numbers of unknowns. But that doesn't mean they're perfect. Maybe 20 years ago they would have completely missed the growth from Tropical Storm to Cat 5 in 24 hours. But they saw it this time and it has driven the prognosis, I guess. Yeah, major pain in the ass for a sh*t-ton of people, having to evacuate, and there's a cost associated with that. But it's not loss of life. We will see how this storm progresses, and what its impact turns out to be. But the response is the thing to watch - because disaster response is getting better as a result of better forecasting.

These are all just my opinions. I remember when I got my weather from a newspaper because the UHF television stations weren't coming in, due to the weather conditions.

Oh great ,now look what you did Brandon, Stock market today: US stocks close at all-time highs ahead of key inflation update
Story by jsor@businessinsider.com
US stocks jumped to record highs on Wednesday.
Indexes hit fresh all-time highs ahead of the key inflation report for September due Thursday.
The CPI reading is a higher stakes event after the big September jobs report.
US stocks jumped on Wednesday as traders looked ahead to coming inflation data and took in the minutes of the Federal Reserve's last meeting.
All three benchmark indexes surged to end the day higher. The Dow Jones Industrial Average jumped more than 400 points to a record close, while the S&P 500 also notched a fresh all-time closing high.
History says these 5 sectors are poised for double-digit gains within a year after the Fed cuts rates
The market has long obsessed over interest rates, and this week, they're firmly in focus.
It's still unclear whether the Federal Reserve will reduce rates by a quarter or half point.
BMO Capital Markets has shared a sector-investing playbook as rates begin to fall.
Investors have waited years for interest rates to fall. On Wednesday, their patience will be rewarded, though that's one of the only sure bets.
Markets know that the Federal Reserve will lower rates at its September meeting, but there's an unusual level of uncertainty about how much rates will be lowered. As expected, the Fed has been coy about cuts, leaving markets torn between pricing in a 25- or 50-basis-point reduction.
Here's where US indexes stood at the 4:00 p.m. closing bell on Wednesday:
S&P 500: 5,792.04, up 0.71%
Dow Jones Industrial Average: 42,512.00, up 1.03% (+431 points)
Nasdaq composite: 18,291.62, up 0.6%

Oh and Thanks Taylor SWIFT is that a 2nd $5,000,000 PLEDGE TO HELP HURRICANE VICTIMS or just the first? How much did the other 2 billionaires send in trump/and his boyfriend Elon send in? Was that nothing? Wow Brandon how the heck did you arrange for all this bad news right before election? SATURATING THE environment with only a little time before the previous president is once again removed from the national scene by the 1st woman who handed him his ass last debate as touted thru all the checkers. trump backs down from FOX propaganda channel ,and you know when you cant get him there its over. -Republican former President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he will not debate Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris, hours after Fox News invited the two presidential contenders to participate in a possible second debate on either Oct. 24 or Oct. 27.THE GUY IS HIDING IN THE BASEMENT, NO 60 MINUTES,,NO INTERVIEWS WITH FACT CHECKERS LIVE.
Trump and Harris debated each other for the first time on Sept. 10. Trump has said there would not be another debate before the Nov. 5 election. He rejected a past invitation from CNN for an Oct. 23 debate, accepted by Harris.
In its statement, Fox said a second debate "would present an opportunity for each candidate to make their closing arguments."
Trump said it was very late in the process now to have a debate.( of course its his standard bullshit lie as he debated 2020 in late October)
Trump faced then-Democratic presidential candidate and U.S. President Joe Biden in a debate in late June.
In their Sept. 10 debate, Harris put Trump on the defensive with a stream of attacks on his fitness for office, his support of abortion restrictions and his myriad legal woes.

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis vowed Wednesday to punish Floridians who leave dogs tied up amid hurricanes, as the threat of Hurricane Milton looms over the state’s west coast. His unofficial post on X was made after a single dog was found tied to a post on I-75 by state police who posted about the dog but have not begun an investigation to find the perpetrator who violated the state's cruelty to animals statute. Pure bullshit, Gov! Next he will threaten to punish citizens for not helping wild animals running loose in the state. Saint Croix said...

I was afraid the 60 MInutes controversy would be limited to conservative media. But it's blowing up in the MSM as well.

The Hill tries to spin it as a Trump accusation.

Both Fox and Variety focus on the Harris campaign. She's trying to distance herself from the weird edits, claiming it was 100% CBS and she had nothing to do with it.

The Times just kills CBS on this fiasco.

Given that Harris has a reputation for making “word salad” statements that obfuscate rather than illuminate, the editing-out of one such response plays straight into the Trump narrative of a “fake news” media that seeks to mop up for the Democrats.

Brutal insult on 60 MInutes, too...

"a show once seen as the gold standard of fair and insightful TV reporting."

What's so strange is that CBS released "teaser" responses of the Harris interview, and then the 60 Minutes interview that ran on Monday was completely different. Nobody would have known about the secret edits if they hadn't released the teasers. So we're seeing a really ugly look at how the MSM operates.

CBS took responses from one question and inserted them as an answer to another question. Crafting a narrative as opposed to doing journalism. All to make Harris sound better.

Looking for hurricane news, I see this from Axios: Today hurricane Milton marked the third landfalling hurricane of 2024, after Helene and Debby. This year "has now tied 1871, 1886, 1964, 2004 and 2005 for the most Florida landfalling" hurricanes on record in a single season, noted Philip Klotzbach, of Colorado State University, on X.
Also unprecedented for most hurricanes making landfall at Fort Myers on a Wednesday.
Lots of hardship and hard work for the people affected; I wish them well and I am extremely thankful that the horrific predictions seem to have been, well, wrong.

Don’t know why they are upset. CBS did the same for Obama when interviewed just after Benghazi. Christopher B said...

Nice to know.

My speculation about the teaser is the Harris campaign lives in a bubble and really thought the word salad she spat out would be an acceptable answer to the majority of voters. I don't think they expected the backlash it got. Given the controversy over the Coates interview, it also seems likely that her answers likely triggered a bunch of the pro-Hamas snowflakes at CBS. The pressure made CBS and the Harris campaign roll the dice that the difference in answers would be either missed or ignored.
