"In contrast to the various septuagenarians on the national stage, [Doug Emhoff is] a youthful, keenly focussed guy who says 'awesome' a lot."

"I spoke with Tricia Gronnevik, a forty-four-year-old credit-union marketing analyst who attended the San Antonio rally. 'Doug just blew me away with how real he is,' she said. 'It doesn’t seem fake or forced, like good old J. D. Vance.' Gronnevik is a fifth-generation Texan—she grew up on a ranch—and she thought Emhoff would be a worthy First Gentleman. 'We need a new version of masculinity represented,' she said. 'I’m really tired of the alpha-male toxic bullshit. Being a South Texas country girl... I grew up in deer camps listening to a lot of misogynistic shit. It’s refreshing that we have men here who are supportive and not punching down, being bullies.' Emhoff’s 'super-cool' musical taste 'is making me love him even more,' she added. 'I’m a big New Order fan, too. The Cure is my favorite band of all time, so if he’s a Cure fan I’m gonna die.'"

Writes Sarah Larson, in "Doug Emhoff Takes His Gen X Energy on the Road/On the trail, Emhoff has made loving music, and his wife, look like a campaign in itself. 'If he’s a Cure fan, I’m gonna die,' one rallygoer said" (The New Yorker).

I asked Google what's the most famous Cure song. I got this:

Now, there's your nontoxic masculinity. Aim higher younger-than-boomer guys. I saw JD Vance's fuchsia tie at the debate last night, but there are miles ahead on the road to detoxification.

IN THE COMMENTS: People are talking about this Daily Mail article, so I want to note that I have seen it: "Kamala Harris's husband Doug Emhoff 'forcefully slapped ex-girlfriend for flirting with another man' in booze-fueled assault after date to star-studded gala." That gives a different picture of where he might be in his journey along the road to detoxification. But are we to believe it? On the subject of believing women accusing men of violence, this paragraph is provocative:
A third friend told DailyMail.com that Jane first told her in 2014 that she had dated Emhoff, and recounted the full story of his alleged abuse in 2018, when then senator Harris was in the news after grilling Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh in a Senate hearing over sexual assault allegations.

”punching down”

So Tricia Gronnevik admits that in her eyes women are the lesser sex? If a man makes a wise crack about women, he’s not joking about his equals, he’s getting cheap laughs at the expense of the weaker half of h. sapiens? Good to understand her perspective.

Look, non-toxic masculinity Doug Emhoff has been just been credibly accused of forcefully slapping his lawyer girlfriend after a Cannes Film Festival event in 2012 AND causing the miscarriage of his mistress nanny he impregnated in 2008. Jen Psaki’s calls that redefining masculinity.

I, for one, appreciate the humor in redefining masculinity away from toxic behavior such as leadership, honor, integrity, and towards the more respectable and healthy behavior of collectivism, dishonesty, lack of any moral standards.

We had a chance in 1996 to stop this type of BS journalism about elected officials personalities in 1996 when Bill Clinton and Newt Gingrich were asked (in separate incidents) about their underwear choices. Clinton waggishly answered, Gingrich reamed the idiot who asked for wasting the opportunity to ask a government leader a real question. In retrospect, who was more toxic there?

Doug Emhoff, what a sexy beast. Geesh, who buys this bullsh*t? That's actually not meant to demean him because I don't think he's the one pushing this, he's just along for the ride. If masculinity means knowing where to put it, he certainly passes that test.

Bob Dylan, a Minnesota native, wrote a song "Knocking on Heaven's Door". We can repurpose the lyrics for potential "First Gentleman" Emhoff. "Knock, knock, knocking on Nanny's door". Which musta worked for Doug considering he knocked her up. Whatta man! You have to be brain dead to want to embrace that version of masculinity. The first rule in any workplace-- in words that the young lady from South Texas might understand, is, "Don't ride the working stock."

Here's a thought, maybe when American women start behaving more like women instead of awful facsimiles of men the men will reduce the well-deserved "misogyny" directed at the imposters trying to poorly imitate them.

Until then, we will continue to have as many opinions about those that don't share our genitalia and lifestyles as they do about about those that don't have theirs. Stay in your lane you intrusive ninnies.

Also, Texas may just go blue this election with Cruz perhaps losing his seat. The abortion issue has women in Texas seething. If that turns into votes, the Republicans are toast and their 30 year tenure running the state will end this election. If not, probably in 2026 or 2028, unless the state legislature stops tripping over themselves with social issues rather than helping workers and businesses. It took the Dems from the Depression to 1994 to lose Texas, the Republicans are accomplishing that in half the time!

People are more complicated than the images the media creates of them. Doug as enlightened, non-toxic, cuddly male and Doug as feckless, submissive beta male are two sides of the same coin, or else mirror images -- one good, the other bad. The real Doug can be more of a bastard than the simplistic image. That makes him worse than his fans think. And maybe better than those who run him down as a weakling? Or is that going too far?

The man who is willing to step aside and let his powerful wife have the spotlight isn't necessarily a saint or a wimp. Think Prince Philip, content to play second fiddle to Queen Elizabeth, but also capable of being a bastard and a bully when he could be or wanted to be.

Dave Begley said...

If Texas turns blue, it will be because of the illegal alien vote. This is my biggest fear. Federal law (Motor Voter) makes it super easy for illegals to register to vote and, per that 2013 SCOTUS case authored by Scalia, the states can't require proof of citizenship to vote. The GOPe in DC has failed us.

"It’s refreshing that we have men here who are supportive and not punching down, being bullies."

That didn't age well, did it? (To be fair, I have no idea if the allegations about Emhoff are true or if it is just another politically motivated accusation.)

An old friend used to run shelters for female survivors of domestic abuse. Being around her, I learned quickly that an awful lot of the abusers were charming, soft-looking, "beta males," and they often checked all the politically correct liberal boxes, too. Looks and demeanor can be very deceiving.

If you're in that field, you also pick up on the fact that even small, weak-looking men can be much stronger than "strong" women and can do extreme physical damage without any weapons but their hands.

(As an aside, my friend was as "progressive" and pro-LGBTQ+ as they come, but even she was shocked by trans activists who insisted on housing biological males in womens' domestic abuse shelters.)

On the subject of The Cure, this band (Robert Smith) went through three major eras. They transformed over time.

Up to 1979: Young boys figuring out who they were
Era 1 (1980 - 1982): Dark, gothic, moody, atmospheric
Era 2 (1983 - 1988): Quirky, off-key, danceable pop
Era 3 (1989 - 1993): Disintegration...global fame...merger of #1 and #2 as highly commercial and less distinct than what came before

The ultra creepy and explicit early B-side "A man inside my mouth" became "Lullaby" (Spiderman) on Disintegration.

https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/7554/
https://songmeanings.com/songs/view/7584/

Everything released after 1993 revisits one of these eras. Stop with Disintegration and you'll miss little. If you prefer Era #1, listen to Tool and related bands. If you prefer Era #2, listen to thousands of alterna-pop bands that copied The Cure.
