"The candidate who will win the election is the candidate seen as the most able to bring about change, say strategists on both sides."

"A New York Times/Siena College poll found 61 percent of likely voters said they want major change from Biden. Democrats argue Harris inhabits an ethos of change simply by being a younger, fresher candidate, and her potential to become the first woman president. They hope Trump will look stale on the stage next to her."

Writes Amber Phillips, in "What Harris, Trump need to do to win Tuesday’s presidential debate" (WaPo).

My question about Harris as the change candidate: She just seized all the delegates Biden won in the primaries to get the nomination, which symbolized that she was the proper substitute for him. Doesn't that require her to run on his record and vow to stay the course and tell us not to change horses in midstream? I think the answer is "yes," and that explains the new focus on age. She is Biden II, the younger Biden.

But people want change, supposedly. It's a "change election." The idea seems to be to convince the people that the change from Biden is just someone younger (and, if you must, also a different color and gender).

Trump should ask - "Who deposed Joe Biden?"

He should stand there and ask that over and over and over.

“the change from Biden is just someone younger (and, if you must, also a different color and gender).”

Do we know anything about who is running the White House right now? Last week, we had an American killed by Hamas and the President came back from vacation to tell us he worked tirelessly to get Israel to take the blame, err I mean to get Israel to stop Hamas from killing the hostage by giving into their demands for a ceasefire. If Biden was on vacation and Harris was on the campaign trail, who worked tirelessly at the White House?

I'm sure he will reference it. I'm not so sure it will affect many voters. To the Democrats, they are interchangeable parts so it doesn't matter. They may have made an improvement.

To the Republicans, it was inevitable and irrelevant how it came about, so it doesn't matter to them either. They already know the Democrats do whatever.

Donald Trump does not need debate advice. If anything, "such a nasty woman" only worked when his enemies were going all out. Kamala Harris will do her best to look basically functional, but President Trump will expose some of her many flaws. It's a gift.

Still, at least she will probably do better than Joe Biden.

The bigger question is, what was Harris' involvement in covering up Biden's dementia? What did Kamala know and when did she know it? (She was either complicit or a dupe; either one is disqualifying.)

The Democrats have been trying to hide deeply flawed leaders behind the symbolic titles of office. So it was, with Joe, so it is, with Kamala. Trump, on the other hand, doesn't hide. He's right there in front of you, hair, warts, and all - what you see, is what you get. He's not afraid for you to know these things, in fact he prefers it.

I predict Kamala isn't going to do very well. She'll try on her steely-eyed Prosecutor costume, but it won't hold; she's a phony crusader and everybody knows it. Tulsi destroyed her with it. Her practiced glib lines will fail her.

Politician support teams always want to trick voters with unasked questions. The question here is not 'who is the most able to bring about change'. The question is, 'Who will bring change for the better, and who will bring change for the worse?' But it's risky to put it that way - better to imply it, and let the voters ask it to themselves, maybe not even realize they're asking and answering it in their head.

The Democrats have been shrieking, trying to accuse Trump of bringing the 'End of Democracy !' - but voters know it's really the 'My Democracy club saying that, with diehard Democrat voters vying to be included in that particular club and to h*ll with your Democracy, Loser. Normal voters remember what Trump actually did with his 4 years, against a relentless nefarious, dirty-dealing, double-teaming opposition. Triple-teaming, if you include the GOPe.

If you can't answer these questions, then you don't even know the right questions to ask about this election. I notice that the media studiously refuses to talk about these questions and instead, make generalities.

The person who is going to win the election is the person who is controlling the vote counters. Who are they?

Dixcus said...

Trump's best line in the first Democrat debate (the one with the real nominee) came after Biden mumbled out an answer to a question:

"I have no idea what he just said there, and I don't think you have any idea either. Anyway ..."

He should queue that line up again after one of Kamala's Word Salads.

RMc said...

No, it doesn't, and you're a racist for saying that. (And a traitor to your gender. And a transphobe, probably.)

Short of a Biden-esque meltdown, the media will wildly praise Harris post-debate and revile Trump for "beating up on a girl".

Jaq said...

ln the movie "The Remains of the Day," there is a scene in the home of a powerful English lord, in the time when they had real power, where Christopher Reeves, playing a wealthy American, proposes a toast at a table full of powerful political figures to a future when government is run by 'professionals" because the way leaders are chosen in a democracy makes a hash of things. He didn't say "To the Deep State!" but he may as well have.

Maggie Thatcher might have been the last true people's choice of leader in the UK, and Trump will be the last one in the US, even if he gets a second term, which I am hoping for.

Peter Navarro is the brains behind Trump’s tariffs-fix-everything policy. As I understand it, Navarro acknowledges the cost of inevitable retaliatory tariffs from the rest of the world, but either argues that the inflation it will bring about is outweighed by the benefits of protectionism (ie protecting US manufacturing base, jobs etc). History suggests otherwise because we have been down this road before in the 1930s. Google Smoot-Hawley tariffs for a sense of what’s in store. The thinking then was that America was too important and its domestic market too huge for the rest of the world to even contemplate retaliating. They were proven wrong by events and if anything America is less dominant of a force now than it was in the 1930s. Retaliation brings about global recession. Simple as that.

As for Navarro’s obsession with levelling the playing field with China, I suggest this article from the Cato Institute that refutes Navarro’s thesis point by point. For the uninitiated, the Cato Institute are a GOP bastion of libertarianism and not Democrats.

Change for change sake is absurd and naive. Voting for change requires to know what that change will be. And Kamala and Donald have two very different visions of change: One more Statist, one more individual freedom focused. One based on building up and increasing the power and hegemony of government, the other focused on slicing up and gutting out the leviathan of governmental excess.

The approach to 'change' could not be more different.

The problem Rich is that economics aren't the only concern when it comes to trade. I'm old enough to remember arguments about not letting steel production and manufacturing jobs be outsourced overseas because of national security concerns. Turns out they were correct. Completely free trade only works in a world where the sea lanes are secured by a dominant power and there is no danger of war with a peer or near-pear adversary. Currently the US Navy is unable to secure access to the Suez Canal because Iran is supplying some near hunter-gather tribesmen with some missiles. And we have no air craft carriers in the Pacific.

https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2024/08/no-u-s-navy-aircraft-carriers-deployed-in-the-pacific/

Oh, and the US can't really build naval ships anymore.

And maintenance on the existing fleet isn't great either.

https://www.forbes.com/sites/craighooper/2023/09/21/americas-waterfront-buckles-as-big-us-navy-maintenance-plans-go-awol/

And of course there is the issue of China building up there Naval capacity at a greater rate than the US can.

Having seen Trump's comments on tariffs and his views on who will pay them, it is fairly clear he doesn't understand how they actually work. He seems to think they would be paid by foreign companies, and not as is the case, by US companies who import goods from abroad. That someone standing to be President has such little understanding of his key policy platform really should be more widely reported..

Trump’s previous go at tariffs drove so many farmers bankrupt that he forced taxpayers to pay billions to bail them out.

So it's a conflict between the image (Trump -- Pale, Stale, and Male Yesterday's Man -- and Harris -- the Fresh Face of the Future) and reality (Trump will change things; Harris means four or eight more years of Bidenism and stagnation).

I wonder, though, how Republicans will manage the message that Harris is just a continuation of Biden with the message that she will be immeasurably worse. One thing that needs to be said is that the fuller impact of Bidenism won't be felt until next year, when the Trump tax cuts expire and more of Biden's policies kick in -- and Harris will take things from there.

But she has only tonight’s debate to make the case that she wouldn’t just be Joe Biden all over again, except younger, female, and darker skin color.
